At present the gallery pages, which are the main namespace for Wikimedia Commons, are being created in an ad hoc manner. In order to develop the gallery pages we need to plan the workflow and develop policies and guidelines.

What are gallery pages?[edit]

Gallery pages are collections of files and text to allow those who use Wikimedia Commons find what they are looking for. They should be multilingual and present a cross section of files, including featured, quality, and valued images.

The problem[edit]

As of early 2015 the main method of browsing Wikimedia Commons is the category system. Categories have inherent limitations and many of them are cluttered with the wrong images. The gallery pages are an alternative but complimentary method to categories for browsing Wikimedia Commons. Unfortunately they are poorly developed.

A snapshot of all of the categories in Category:Gallery pages as of 7 January 2015 is:

A small section of the 1074 listed pages in the category at the same time is this contiguous list:

...(69230) Hermes, (87) Sylvia, (99942) Apophis, (الجزائر (مدينة, +Laburnocytisus, .22 Long Rifle, .243 Winchester, .25 ACP, .303 British, .32 ACP, .357 Magnum, .38 ACP, .380 ACP, .40 S&W, .44 Magnum, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .45 GAP, .50 AE, .50 BMG, .500 S&W Magnum, 0.999…, 0129.Amandine, 060DA, 1, 1 (number), 1. August in Laufenburg, 1. Badisches Leib-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 109, 1. FC Köln, 1. FC Union Berlin, 1/8/2010 Guangzhou protest, 10 Palace Gate, 10,5 cm kanon M/34 ...

This shows that gallery pages are being developed by editors with a specific interest. Major topics and popular pages are quite likely to have poor coverage via gallery pages and since Wikimedia Commons is well used resource it is imperative that this situation is rectified.

Work needed[edit]

  • Research usability of Wikimedia Commons
  • Develop individual galley page templates for the major topics such as years, countries, topics etc
  • Develop a Manual of style
  • Develop a deletion policy
  • Develop maintenance and usage templates
  • Develop pages naming policy ("Gallery" vs "Galleries" for example)
  • Develop a notability policy
  • Create the gallery pages
  • Create the gallery pages category structure
  • Once the major topics are established promote gallery pages through the Main Page

Specific tasks

Procedural notes

  • The first iteration of categorisation does not have to follow the complete category heirarchy that currently exists for other pages since there is insufficient gallery pages to fill them all. A shorter (smaller height) category heirarchy is sufficient at this stage.

Draft guidelines[edit]

  • Page names (discuss)
    • ("Gallery pages" rather that "Galleries" is used to avoid confusion with architectural galleries)
    • Categories containing collections of galleries should be of the form Category:Gallery pages by TOPIC or Category:Gallery pages of TOPIC, i.e. the plural form is used
    • Care must be taken to avoid confusion with architectural galleries
    • Categories containing gallery pages only should be of the form Category:TOPIC (galleries)
    • Pages name conventions should follow what already exists in the Wikimedia Commons categorisation scheme and where it does not exist the Wikipedia scheme should be followed
    • Capitalisation should follow the style used elsewhere on Commons
    • Consistency should be used for page names
    • Gallery page names should be plural or singular depending on the topic, e.g. Domesday Book is singular since there is only one, and Dogs, Cats, Maps should be plural
  • Deletion policy (discuss)
    • Galleries containing a small number [value needed?] of files with little or no text should be deleted unless it is a major topic [define]
  • Categories
    • Categories should only contain gallery pages and subcategories. Individual files are not classed as galleries.
