Purpose

Goals for this event:

  1. Popularize multi-culture of Taiwan as well as her rich hertiage of arts and history
  2. Let the world knows more about Taiwan, help Taiwan shine on the international stage, and promote touralism in/to Taiwan

Summary

Wiki Loves Monuments is an international photo contest for monuments, organized by Wikimedia this September. Wikimedia is the movement behind Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia – a global collaboration authored by volunteers.

「Wiki Love Monuments」as photography competition was originated in Nederland Branch. It then expanded to Europe and all around the world since 2011. (Few Asia countries participate in this event so far.) The participants photograph monuments and historic buildings everywhere.

They must contribute the photos to Wiki Commons by uploading pictures with proper authorization of CC (Creative Commons) format.

Then the referee vote for the winning photo. The winner can gain a flight ticket to join the Wikimania meeting next year. At the same time, this pictures will be showed all around in Wikipedia.

The competition is divided into two phases. The first stage of regional preliminary round is arranged by each regional community. They vote for the winning picture into the international final. In the second stage, the pictures will be voted by another team of referees. Along with the National Historic Monuments Day, this event will be held in September.

In 2016, this event had gained responses from 42 nations. With totally 107 hundred photographers and 275 thousands precious photos about culture or historical sites in these nations, Wiki Loves Monuments now becomes the largest photography competition in the world.
