How do I...

How do I contact the person ( Qwfp (talk) 20:17, 25 February 2016 (UTC) who requested a deletion of an illustration I uploaded to find out why? I have spent ages within Wiki and find it labyrinthine in its workings and end up dizzy with frustration. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mercsport (talk • contribs) 17:56, 1 March 2016‎ (UTC)

You can click on the link "talk" after the user's name, which links to their talk page. However, it would probably be better to comment in the deletion request page, where the user mentioned the reason. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:22, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

photos and images

I understand the use of your photos/images are free and not copyright. Is this correct? I am wanting to make a cd for my Mothers memorial. Can I download photos/images from here and use them with purchased music to make a slideshow and will I be able to burn it to a cd? Are any of the photos copyright and if so how will I know which ones? Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Melvadd (talk • contribs)

Stonewall Columbus

I am trying to upload the 2016 logo for our event Columbus Pride since there is a logo on the page from 2014. When i initially uploaded the new logo someone tagged it for deletion even though the logo was created by ME for the organization I work for, Stonewall Columbus, Inc. Stonewall Columbus is the creator and presenter of Columbus Pride annually here in Columbus, OH. How can I update the image with the current logo? Please advise. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by KatCrowe (talk • contribs)

Hello CactusWriter I appreciate your dedication to the society of wikipedia but really have to ask you to put down the warning about the actors photo because this photo has all right to be published under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication. (https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en)

This photo has all the rights to be here and I do not understand why not.

Daniel Horvath has dedicated the work to the public domain by waiving all of his or her rights to the work worldwide under copyright law, including all related and neighboring rights, to the extent allowed by law. You can copy, modify, distribute and perform the work, even for commercial purposes, all without asking permission of this photo.

It's even in FLIKR : https://www.flickr.com/photos/138988587@N03/25083014079/in/photolist-Edv1cZ

Anonimoushh: First you claimed that you were Daniel Horvath at File talk:Daniel-horvath-IMDB.jpg, then you say that was a lie to try to get around copyright issues. It's going to be very hard to take anything you say seriously if you do things like that. I think you're going to have to come clean and explain exactly what your relation to Daniel Horvath is. I see that all your edits on English Wikipedia are about this person. Are you Daniel Horvath? A fan? His manager/publicist etc?
The Flickr link you provided doesn't work, but I'm guessing we're talking about https://www.flickr.com/photos/138988587@N03/25335292522 from the same Flickr account. That photo was uploaded yesterday to a freshly created Flickr account, so its appearance there proves nothing. Since you've already admitted to lying to try to get around copyright issues, attempted license laundering doesn't seem like a very big leap. Furthermore, the copyright information there doesn't match what you've claimed here. So let's leave that aside and focus on more relevant questions.
What is the name of the photographer that created the photo? On the original file description, you claimed it was Daniel Horvath, and if we're talking about the photo at http://www.imdb.com/media/rm448520192/nm5982079, the caption there also claims that it's a selfie, but that seems unlikely. This is important, because unless there is a relevant written employment contract, written work-for-hire agreement or written copyright transfer agreement, the photographer – not Daniel Horvath – is the likely copyright holder. And the only one who can issue a valid copyright license or release a work into the public domain is the copyright holder.

Copyright help regarding File:My pib.jpg

why my photo will deleted --Rocker Ritesh (talk) 06:26, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

Firstly, as explained on the file description page, because you haven't provided sufficient information on the file's copyright status. Commons only hosts content that can be used by anyone for any purpose, so copyrighted works must be covered by a free license.
Secondly, the project scope of Commons is to host free media files that are useful for educational purposes. Low-resolution selfies with poor technical quality depicting subjects with no apparent notability typically aren't realistically useful for educational purposes. (This issue has not been formally raised yet, but it is likely to be unless the file is deleted for missing a license.) LX (talk, contribs) 10:41, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

Commons images not showing up on other wiki

I work on a specialized Wiki that is connected to the Wikimedia Commons database. For years it's been working fine, with any Commons image showing up properly on the wiki. Lately, however, this 'link' appears to have broken and all of the commons images just show up as broken (red) links. Could anyone have any idea why this would be happening? 70.68.175.11 22:05, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

Copyright and Licensing Laws for works from the Free City of Danzig

What is law concerning images and works created in the Free City of Danzig, semi-autonomous city state that lasted from 1920-1939, and was overseen by the League of Nations? Also, what is the law concerning works made within the city from October 1939 to March 1945, when the city was officially apart of Nazi Germany (according to the Germans at the time)? Where do people find pictures for things to upload if they must own them???

I've noticed several pages that need updated photos, but the rules of Wikipedia say that I can only upload images that are owned by me. But then, where do people get photos of musicians, actors, even a picture of a place like Niagra Falls, that they themselves own? Don't people just get photos from articles and things throughout the web or are there specific places to go where to find credible images to upload? Thanks for the help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Navarrocortez (talk • contribs)

@Navarrocortez: Many people upload things (like US Government works) that are in the public domain, or works that have been 'verifiably' released under a Commons-compatible license by owners that do not edit here (for example, Youtube allows videos to be placed under a CC-BY license, and screenshots from those videos are acceptable on Commons if properly sourced). Reventtalk 09:24, 6 March 2016 (UTC)
Commons only accepts files that are freely licensed. Most images found on the Web are not freely licensed and may not be uploaded here. There are legitimate ways to get images, however. The Niagara Falls are a good example, we have:
The best way to get free images is to take them yourself. If you can't, flickr is a good source. See Commons:Flickr files for a complete overview of that topic. Keep in mind that sometimes flickr users lie about the copyright status: they claim to have made photographs themselves that they simply took from some website. If you are in doubt about a particular image, you can ask here before uploading. --rimshottalk 14:26, 6 March 2016 (UTC)
As for musicians, actors, etc., a lot of us go out of our way to take photos of notable people. Here are some of mine, and by no means all of the ones I've taken. This requires time and effort. You don't do it by sitting at home staring at a screen. - Jmabel ! talk 17:16, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

  • Commons doesn't set policy for bs.wiki or en.wiki. en.wiki allows "fair use" justifications in some circumstances; I don't offhand know whether these particular images would qualify, you'd have to ask there. No idea about bs.wiki at all. - Jmabel ! talk 07:34, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

  • Other works: 95 years from publication OR 120 years from creation, whichever expires first

I can't help but wonder why you thought that of all the pages on the Internet, this would be the place to ask. This question does not appear to be have anything to do with how to use Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository. LX (talk, contribs) 19:42, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
I don't have any great suggestions of where to ask, but someone at en:Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Humanities might be able to aim you in a useful direction. Also, I assume you mean to write Altenstadt, but there are at least three place in Germany by that name (which simply means "Old City"), so I suspect you would do well to be more specific. I presume by "a work camp" you mean during World War II; when you ask your question at the reference desk, being specific about that will also increase your chance of getting an answer. - Jmabel ! talk 21:22, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

Not sure where to turn

I've uploaded sets of several sets of images which I've spent dozens of hours accumulating, getting the photographers to release the copyrights under CC Attribution/ShareAlike 4.0, and filing OTRS requests, and posting. Nearly everything I've done so far is still flagged for deletion or deleted.

I'm not sure I understand the issue, and "pinging" the people who opened the nomination for deletion (I think I did it correctly) has yielded no response. I also don't want to hassle the people at OTRS for a partially-related issue because I'm sure they're busy.

I've secured the CC release of the photographs through the photographers themselves, but the photographs contain images of sculpture by another artist. To the best of my understanding, the copyright for the photograph itself is held by the person who released the shutter on the camera. The sculptor, of course, holds a copyright to his own work, but not to the image. A little research leads me to believe the sculptor holds some say in how depictions of his work (though they're legally copyrighted by the photographers) are used, but I've noticed it's also very common for such images on artists' Wikipedia articles to not explicitly have the permission of the artists whose work is depicted, but rather be released under fair use and the auspices of the photographer (e.g., https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hirst-Love-Of-God.jpg). There are still others (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dale_Chihuly#/media/File:Chihuly_at_Kew_Gardens_043.jpg) that have no explicit permission or justification of use whatsoever.

The bottom line: how do I move forward? I've invested a bunch of time into this project and I don't want to see everything just vanish. Do I contact the sculptor and ask for his permission? Since it's not a copyright release, what would such a request even look like? Or is it acceptable to claim fair use? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joshgwinters (talk • contribs)

  • Commons does not accept images on a fair-use basis.
  • The Damien Hirst example is hosted on the English-language Wikipedia, not on Commons. They have entirely different policy, allowing certain non-free images on a fair-use basis, but requiring that a justification be given, related to use in a specific article; this has such a justification.
  • The Chihuly is justified based on Freedom of panorama in the UK; too complicated a concept for me to explain here, but follow the link if you want to understand it.
  • It's hard to answer your specific question about your own uploads in that you didn't single out any particular file, but I'm guessing that you didn't mark them with {{OTRS pending}}, so no one had a way to know that the OTRS process had been initiated. Am I right? - Jmabel ! talk 00:20, 26 February 2016 (UTC)
@Joshgwinters: As a further note, if OTRS processes a valid release for a file that was deleted, they will request it be undeleted themselves (and attach the OTRS ticket to the file once it's restored). Revent (talk) 04:49, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Sorry this response has been so long in coming. You asked whether or not I marked them with OTRS pending, and I did. They were deleted subsequent to that. Since they no longer exist, I'll refer to my upload log. For reference, all files depict work by a sculptor named Christopher Ries. The file "Sunflower IV.webm" was deleted for not having permissions: "This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license." The YouTube page I referenced, however, lists the permissions by the creator (Mr. Ries's son) directly in the video's description. I'm not sure what more I'm being asked to provide. The status of the other files are even more ambiguous to me. I sought permissions from the various authors of every photograph I've uploaded and either had them sent in through OTRS requests or, in one case, asked the author to upload the photos to his site and publish them with the CC license through the metadata of the image. Everything was fine until a handful were nominated for deletion because of both an invalid OTRS request and the same reason that was given for the "Sunflower IV.webm" video. (The files are "Blue Ginkgo by Christopher Ries.jpg," "Desert Flower (detail) by Christopher Ries.jpg," "Christopher Ries through Tear Jar.jpg," "Sunflower by Christopher Ries.jpg," and "Sunflower Gilding.jpg." My understanding of copyright law at the time (still admittedly little) was that the photographer holds the copyright to all his or her photographs, regardless of the content of the photograph. Apparently this is wrong: if the copyrighted photograph includes a depiction of another copyrighted work (in this case, sculpture), the creator of the work being represented in the photograph has some say in how the photograph is used. To the best of my current understanding, that was the explanation for why they were deleted. (I'm not sure how to dig up the talk page where this was mentioned.) I offered to contact Christopher Ries, the artist whose work was being depicted in the images, to request further permission but I'm still not sure if this is an acceptable resolution for Wikimedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JoshgwintersJoshgwinters (talk • contribs)

  • @Ellin Beltz: You were the deleting admin, so you may want to participate. - Jmabel ! talk 01:40, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
  • In the U.S., the creator of a work that constitutes a significant part of a photograph doesn't just have "some say in how the photograph is used." They have a copyright. The photo is considered a derivative of the underlying work (e.g. a sculpture or painting), and two copyrights are (equally) involved. Yes, the permission of the copyright-holder of the underlying work is exactly what seems to be missing here. - Jmabel ! talk 01:44, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
  • By the way, I've gone through the history of the deleted File:Blue Ginkgo by Christopher Ries.jpg (as an admin, I can view it) and it never had {{OTRS pending}}, but that's beside the point if you had only one of the two required permissions. - Jmabel ! talk 01:46, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
Comment This was the first I heard of this discussion, if a ping was issued, it was not received. As the closing administrator, I'd point to the close statement "Deleted: per nomination. Yes, the author's permission is required to upload his works to Commons." We have here sculptural works by a named sculptor with photos taken by someone/s not the uploader. There were no OTRS statements. The sculptures are of course copyright of the sculptor, not at all some say. Without the sculptor's permission, these images are all copyright violations. To retain them on Wikimedia Commons requires both the permission of the sculptor and of the photographer via the COM:OTRS system. Commons does not accept fair use images; if you've seen those elsewhere, please notice that they are not hosted here but on local Wikipedias which have different rules of what they can and will host. The images were deleted because they were copyright violations. Please read COM:L and COM:EVID before making more uploads. Ellin Beltz (talk) 16:07, 4 March 2016 (UTC)

@Ellin Beltz: Hi Ellin. I'm sorry to belabor the point. I read the references you provided along with the Commons article on derivative works. I think I know the answer to the question I'm about to ask, but I just want to be sure. The sculptor would have to release his underlying sculpture under a Creative Commons license for the uploaded photographs to be valid, correct? Forgive me for being so stuck on this; I'd been holding out hope that it would be as easy as the sculptor confirming via OTRS that he's comfortable with the photographs being uploaded without changing the licensing on the sculpture itself. (I've actually gotten in touch with him and he's OK with the latter, but, understandably, not the former.)

If this is the case, would you recommend I try fair use on Wikipedia? I don't want to abandon the project but I'm becoming apprehensive about the ultimate outcome. I appreciate the guidance everyone has given me.

Joshgwinters (talk) 03:21, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

  • The sculptor doesn't have to make a broad waiver of rights on the underlying sculpture, just give permission for the particular photo. Similarly, if you had written a book and someone wanted to publish an excerpt under a free license, you could give permission for the excerpt to be so published while reserving other rights pertaining to the book. - Jmabel ! talk 06:13, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
  • As Jmabel says, the sculptor is only giving permission for the work to be depicted in the photograph/s. Ellin Beltz (talk) 17:01, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

Problems with Instant Commons

I volunteer on the UK LGBT Archive wiki - http://www.lgbtarchive.uk/wiki/ - which runs Mediawiki 1.26.2. It uses a large number of Commons illustrations via Instant Commons. Suddenly this morning, these images are no longer displaying in our wiki. Help please! --Ross Burgess (talk) 12:25, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

Can you point to a specific page where this problem can be observed? Ruslik (talk) 12:54, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
One example is [[1]]. However I've noticed a very strange thing. The images are normally visible, but became unavailable (sometimes with "Error creating thumbnail", sometimes with the filename redlinked) when I log in to the wiki. --Ross Burgess (talk) 13:16, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
I do not see anything unusual (I can not log in). The problem is likely on your side. Ruslik (talk) 13:21, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
Other sites have mentioned the same problem in the past weeks. However, that's probably not something that can be fixed by Commons. If the problem affects logged-in users only, maybe there's a setting they can adjust on their side. Or maybe it's something Wikimedia could fix at another level. One strange thing is that the question above says "suddenly this morning". -- Asclepias (talk) 13:31, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

The problem now seems to have mysteriously cleared itself. --Ross Burgess (talk) 23:49, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

account merging

Hello. Some time ago I was asking what to do with two a account that had been merged with a wrong one. The story is: I had an account on Commons User:Grzegorz_Polak and it was renamed for User:Grzegorz_Polak~commonswiki. As you can see User:Grzegorz_Polak is "red" now. I've merged it with polish Wikipedia. But it is wrong. I want the old one User:Grzegorz_Polak~commonswiki to be merged with Wiki-PL Grzegorz Polak. How to unmerge accounts or merge another one (replace an old one)? Regards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Grzegorz Polak (talk • contribs) 08:49, 13 March 2016‎ (UTC)

All username changes are handled through meta:Steward requests/Username changes, but as noted there, merging accounts is apparently a computationally unsolvable problem (which sounds like a joke, but isn't). LX (talk, contribs) 10:10, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

This is the seal of the Township. I am not sure of the copyright status, I actually found it on the internet on another site. I know federal law has no copyright issues. Is this an issue?

--Sir Joseph (talk) 18:08, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

  • I'm not sure what you mean by "I know federal law has no copyright issues." If you mean that works of the U.S. federal government are not normally subject to copyright, that's true but completely beside the point, because this is the work of a town government. You don't link as a source the page you got it from, but given that you list the township as the source, I presume it was their page.
  • The image is certainly complex enough to be copyrightable and a quick Google search shows that it dates only from 2003. So, the only basis we could have it here is (1) if someone who can speak for the copyright owner (could be the township or the artist, I have no idea which in this case) would free-license it, as described at COM:OTRS (which is unlikely) or (2) if you can show that it is so close to some earlier public domain work as not to introduce any copyrightable elements (also unlikely, and at best an awful lot of work). So I doubt we can have this here. - Jmabel ! talk 00:01, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

Chart that looks like Pac-Man

I distinctively remember uploading a photograph of a pie chart from a Finnish newspaper with the captions "part of chart that looks like Pac-Man" and "part of chart that doesn't look like Pac-Man". I can't find it any more. I looked through all my uploads, through the category Category:Taken with Olympus E-620 and the category Category:Pac-Man. Was it deleted? I never received a deletion notice. If it was, then why? The image of Pac-Man is simple enough to fall under free use, there's plenty of pictures of the character in the category I mentioned. And it wasn't even a screenshot of any Pac-Man video game. There's plenty of photographs of newspapers too, and it doesn't even show any reconstruction of a photograph made by a professional photographer. Am I simply unable to find the photograph, or was it deleted? JIP (talk) 20:41, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

The upload logs list all the uploads by the account, including the deleted files. A search with "pie" in the category Pac-Man finds File:Pac-Man pie chart.jpg, which looks like what you are looking for. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:23, 6 March 2016 (UTC)
Convenience link File:Pac-Man pie chart.jpg. But it's hard to see how this wouldn't be a copyright violation (of the newspaper's copyright, and that of the advertiser at right). - Jmabel ! talk 23:22, 6 March 2016 (UTC)
I must have simply overlooked the file. Nevertheless, I feel that the actual graphic is way too simple to violate the newspaper's copyright, unless any picture of a newspaper (even if only a small sample of text) violates the newspaper's copyright, in which case I think there's plenty of images already on Commons that do so. I agree that it possibly violates the advertiser's copyright, if that is reason enough to delete the picture, I might have to alter it to crop the advertisement out. JIP (talk) 20:48, 8 March 2016 (UTC)
I'm not sure about the pacman graph itself, but at a minimum, it needs to be cropped to just that component. As it stands, there are creative elements in the ad image on the right and substantial text in the article above...{{Non-free newspaper image}}. DMacks (talk) 03:45, 16 March 2016 (UTC)
I uploaded a cropped version: File:Pac-Man pie chart cropped.jpg. JIP (talk) 18:24, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

Categorisation with HotCat

I recently uploaded images of three different courses of a set menu I had aboard Viking Grace. I'm fairly sure I tagged the three of them in Category:Scallop dishes, Category:Veal dishes and Category:Éclairs respectively, with HotCat, but it turned out none of them were tagged in the respective categories. They were tagged in all the other categories I tagged them in with HotCat, though. I distinctively remember HotCat offering me the available categories as I typed them in. In the end I retagged the respective food categories by hand. Is this some sort of known problem? JIP (talk) 20:15, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

This happened to me again with File:Pac-Man pie chart cropped.jpg. HotCat failed to tag the image in Category:Pie charts, I had to tag it manually. It appears the problem is with whichever category I tag first. I've lately seen the upload form offer the "Categories" link multiple times, what is up with that? Is this related to my problem? Mirror image

How do I flip an image to get a mirror image of it? Dunkleosteus77 (talk) 01:10, 18 March 2016 (UTC)

  • I'm not aware of any built-in way to do that in Commons. I'd recommend downloading the full-resolution version to your own machine, using any of a number of tools to flip it (I like GIMP, but there are many choices) and then re-uploading. Unless mirroring in the original constitutes an error, you should upload under a different filename. Link the two files using {{Derived from}} and {{Derivative versions}} - Jmabel ! talk 02:27, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
If it's a JPEG file, use a tool like jpegtran to avoid adding destructive compression. If you are mirroring the image to correct it, uploading the new version under the same filename is probably okay. If the mirroring constitutes a manipulation, you should use a different filename and point this out on the file description page (e.g. using {{Retouched picture}}). Hi,

I'm creating a new page for Mary Roach's new book (out in June 2016) and I'm not sure which option to select to ensure that this photo stays put. Mary emailed me this image and it's also on her website and a few other locations. I believe we did this last time and I don't remember if she's listed as owning it or her publishing company. Can you let me know what to do for both circumstances?

Thanks! --Misschrisparker (talk) 03:56, 11 March 2016 (UTC)

I'm not sure, Jmabel, but I'll find out. Thanks for responding. --Misschrisparker (talk) 22:25, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

I found out that the publishing company owns the rights for this image. Someone at the publishing company explained I should use the non-free use rationale, I did that and it's still marked for deletion. I now have two image pages for this cover and I'm afraid both will be removed.

Misschrisparker (talk)

Wikimedia Commons cannot rely on fair use to host non-free content, because fair use only covers use in a specific context. Commons is a general-purpose media repository, so by definition, there is no such context here. Some projects, like English Wikipedia, have chosen to allow local uploads of non-free fair use content. If the intended use is on English Wikipedia, see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. If you have questions regarding that, see en:Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. LX (talk, contribs) 17:24, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

Okay. I listed this book cover exactly the way this other cover is listed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PACKING_FOR_MARS_paperback_cover.jpeg and the page got deleted. It's for English Wiki. I've read these articles and followed 3 different pages of information with no luck. Misschrisparker (talk)

According to the edit-history of yours I can find, it appears the upload you made (and that was then deleted) was here on commons. As LX explained, fair-use is not allowed on commons at all (no amount of non-free legitimate-use rationalization can overcome the policy that commons completely prohibits non-free images). But instead, if you wanted to use it as fair-use in an English Wikipedia article, you would have to upload it to en.wp directly (same as how the Packing for Mars file is). That site does allow fair-use images for articles that are themselves on that site. But even then, according to that site's fair-use policy, you would have to wait until you actually have a live article there rather than a "Draft". On the other hand, if you have publisher's written statement that the file truely is "free", then it can live on commons. But it sounds like that's not what the license owner is willing to do. DMacks (talk) 03:35, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

Fantastic, that makes much more sense DMacks, I just assumed I had to add the photo here before I added it there, I don't know why. Thanks for clearing that up, I feel like an idiot, thanks for your help! Misschrisparker (talk)

Quite the contrary...smart for asking about, and strong for not getting discouraged by, the subtlties of either copyright laws or wikipedia/wikimedia's technical processes policies based on them! DMacks (talk) 04:23, 19 March 2016 (UTC)

Bulk upload from non-WMF wiki

Hi,

we have locally stored cc-by-sa 3.0 images at wikiskripta.eu (for ex. histology images are here) that are of nice quality and are good candidates to be moved to commons. What would be a least effort way to bulk move them to commons? I know there are such tools/bots for such task for WMF wikis, but is there a way for non-WMF wiki? Thanks. --Wesalius (talk) 09:19, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

Just merely importing the images themselves would be 'sub-optimal', since they seem to have annotations as well. Reventtalk 21:24, 5 March 2016 (UTC)
  • Replying to ping, my perspective as an experienced mass uploader but only examining this prospective source for a few minutes, is that wikiskripta would need several questions unambiguously addressed before a mass upload was possible, though individual uploads would probably be a non-issue for anyone experienced with the material. For example:
    1. the site has a disclaimer about annotations, consequently they do not appear free but effectively have a non-commercial restriction or an attribution issue
    2. images are annotated but I see examples where what might be old/public domain images are then marked as own work, rather than as a derivative, this casts doubt on the CC-BY licenses used and we would be unable to verify the source or claimed license as the author would be misleading
So, unfortunately I would personally not work with Wikiskripta as a mass upload source, though a lot of my reluctance would be because I have no skills in Czech and could not double check exactly how the site works and the nitty-gritty of copyright verification there. -- (talk) 16:45, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

@: Thank you for review. We are ready to work on the issues, would you be kind and point me to the disclaimer for the annotations? And would you point me to an example image, which is marked as own work but is a derivative? I am sure that marking derivatives as own work is just misunderstanding of the authorship concept or uploaders laziness. --Wesalius (talk) 15:04, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Category question

Hi, Probably a stupid question ... but when I'm using Hotcat and I add one category & it automatically saves... - Is there way where I can add multiple categories and It saves automatically too?
It's frustrating when I'm going through quite a few files and constantly have to go back to smack "save page" before continuing, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 19:05, 13 March 2016 (UTC) (Amended 15:47, 14 March 2016)

  • I don't get what happens that you are describing as "it automatically saves". You can edit the wikitext freely, and add any number of categories before saving. - Jmabel ! talk 20:09, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
    • When you add a category to a file it automatically saves it, but when you add more than one it comes with the preview box asking you to save those categories ..... So I was curious to know if there was a script or something that could save multiple ones automatically (ie no preview screen)
I could do it that way but that'd take even longer ... I don't want longer I want quicker lol, Thanks ,–Davey2010Talk 20:38, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
Davey2010, are you adding categories by editing the page, or adding them some other way? In particular, are you perhaps using the HotCat gadget? I've never used it, so I can't help you use it, but just as Jmabel notes, you can always edit the wikitext freely. Category coding goes at the bottom of the page, and you can add and subtract categories at will, because they're just part of the page's code. Nyttend (talk) 14:18, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
- Damnit sorry yep I'm using hotcat... I'd completely forgot about that sorry, so I guess the correct question would be; Is there a way of adding mulitple cats in Hotcat with out the preview screen coming up? .... Not sure if that's less confusing or more lol, Anyway thanks for your help, –Davey2010Talk 15:50, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Indeed resolved, but for the benefit of anyone else reading, the '++' at the beginning of the categories line when using HotCat, immediately after the word 'Categories', puts the gadget in 'multiple changes mode' and gives a save button. Reventtalk 04:07, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

Has this image been deleted before?

An editor just added this photo to the Elizabeth Gracen article on en.wikipedia. I thought that it had been deleted before due to copyright violation. Was I wrong about this? Dismas (talk) 13:13, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

It was removed from the article last week (by you), but it was not nominated for deletion. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:36, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I could have sworn it was deleted. Ah well... Must be getting old. :) Dismas (talk) 15:07, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
You could nominate it. It has metadata and I couldn't find a previous publication with a simple image search on the web, but you could reasonably ask evidence about the uploader's claim of being the subject and the author. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:08, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
@Dismas: No 'identical' (i.e., having the same SHA1 hash) image has ever been uploaded to Commons. It's not really possible to tell if a 'slightly edited' version (such as a EXIF change) was ever uploaded, without knowing a 'suspect' deleted file to look at. Reventtalk 04:15, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

If it is really public domain (i.e. it is allowed to use the pictures for commerical purposes too), then I would say that it can be uploaded as public domain here as well, using the Attribution template. --Gretarsson (talk) 11:06, 17 March 2016 (UTC)
Supplementum: Caution! Here it says that “The text, images, graphics, sound files, animation files, video files and their arrangement on Daimler Internet sites are all subject to Copyright and other intellectual property protection. These objects may not be copied for commercial use or distribution, nor may these objects be modified or reposted to other web sites, apps or other digital content [...]” IMHO this means that all the images hosted on public m@rs must not be uploaded on commons! --Gretarsson (talk) 11:23, 17 March 2016 (UTC)
I do not think the words public domain mean what you think they mean. As for "which license should I use" – you should use the license specified by the copyright holder. If they haven't specified a copyright license, it isn't covered by any copyright license, which means it's not free, and you shouldn't upload it to Commons. LX (talk, contribs) 20:45, 17 March 2016 (UTC)
Indeed, 'copyrighted' and 'public domain' are mutually exclusive, and if a source uses term 'public domain' in regard to a work, but then elsewhere uses the term copyright (and there is no independent rationale for believing the copyright claim is incorrect) then it's reasonable to assume it's copyrighted and their use of the term 'public domain' was in error. The 'public domain' has no actual legal existence... a work is copyrighted, or not, and 'public domain' is just the informal term used for the state of 'no longer copyrighted'. Help an editor?

Hi! I was wondering if someone can help the editor Piyushratnu with the image File:Shrikant Bhasi-1.jpg. He has a COI, which he's disclosed on his userpage on Wikipedia. An image was uploaded to go with the article for Shrikant Bhasi, which was deleted here.

Rantu just needs someone to help walk him through the upload process and if necessary, the OTRS procedure. He does have a COI, but I can vouch that he's very eager and willing to work with everyone so I don't see where that would be an issue. Tokyogirl79 (talk) 09:03, 11 March 2016 (UTC)

  • And you can't help him because...? - Jmabel ! talk 23:10, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
  • It was mostly because I wasn't as familiar with the uploading and permissions process with WC and I wanted to make sure that he had someone who was extremely familiar with how to go about putting an image into the public domain. Because he has a COI, I wanted to make sure that everything was kosher and that there wouldn't be any issues later on down the line if I gave him bad advice because I didn't entirely know what I was doing - especially since I'm not familiar with the way this image was deleted. I didn't know if there'd be a way that this could be restored and the copyright on the image fixed - something that would require a WC admin. In other words, my reasons for asking for help was because I didn't want to get the guy in trouble by giving him the wrong information- especially since he's a paid editor and there tends to be strong negative reactions to paid editing. Well, that and I was knee deep in finals for my graduate classes. Tokyogirl79 (talk) 04:05, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
    • Thanks! There's really almost no such thing as conflict of interest in providing a photo, if it's within scope. It was deleted simply because the claim of "own work" almost certainly wasn't true. If he wants to upload a photo, he needs to the copyright status of the photo and, assuming it is copyrighted, know who owns copyright (typically, the photographer, unless there has been an explicit written transfer of those rights). If he doesn't know that, then there is no way we can accept it on Commons, but I assume that as a paid contributor he should have access to some photo where the rights are clear. If he does know that, then we need a specific free license (typically CC-BY-SA) of the photo by the copyright holder, as described in COM:OTRS. So, as you can see, his being paid really doesn't change this at all. Plenty of organizations provide appropriately licensed photos of their leaders, their buildings, etc., and as long as they are reasonably notable, those are welcome (and the threshold for notability is generally a bit lower on Commons than on the English-language Wikipedia). - Jmabel ! talk 05:48, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

  1. This isn't Wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons.

A way to update a Commons file from an enwiki one

Is there a way to copy over the old (and new) versions of en:File:New Horizons current position.jpg into our local file File:New Horizons current position.jpg so that the enwiki version can then be deleted? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 14:26, 25 March 2016 (UTC)

Not sure what result exactly you want to achieve. Depending on what you want to do, I suppose there may be various more or less complicated ways to do it. But, whatever you do, do not simply overwrite the file "File:New Horizons current position.jpg", because it is actually in use, in at least some local projects, to show that specific image. If your idea is that you want to reuse this "undated" filename, I suppose that may be a reason to rename this file by including the specific date in its new filename, like for most other files in the series, but then you will have to take care to replace the old filename with the new filename in all the local projects that use this Commons file. After that, you could reuse the old filename. I can't figure out what purpose that would serve, if Commons has all the versions on separate files anyway. But if your idea is to create a file with all the versions on it, it may be better to choose a new filename, such as "File:New Horizons positions between 2006-11-11 and 2007-03-29.jpg". -- Asclepias (talk) 18:30, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
The enwiki file has several versions, one of which is also on Commons. I was wondering if the other more recent versions can be uploaded here as well.Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 18:44, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
The en.wikipedia file has versions from 2006-2007. Commons seems to have this 2007 version and then mostly later versions. If the objective is to have on Commons the 2006-2007 versions that may be missing, maybe it's better to upload them as separate files, with their respective dates in the filenames, for example on a model similar to the filenames in Category:New Horizons trajectory. For advice about what is possible from a technical point of view, you could ask also on Commons:Administrators' noticeboard. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:54, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
Huh - the Commons file has only one version, and it's not the most recent version of the enwiki file either.Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:07, 26 March 2016 (UTC)
Yes, like I said above, if you want to upload the images from 2006 and 2007 that may be missing from Commons, I think the best practice would be to follow the same practice that has been followed on Commons for the other images in the series "New Horizons Current Position", that is to upload each image separately under its own filename (for example File:New Horizons Current Position 2010-03-25.jpg, etc.). If you think that the current filename for the 14 March 2007 image should be changed to a more specific filename like "File:New Horizons Current Position 2007-03-14.jpg", yes that might be a reason for a rename, as it would also follow the practice used on Commons for the other files in the series. That rename would free the more generic filename "File:New Horizons Current Position.jpg". But it would probably not be a good idea to reuse that generic filename for another particular image or particular group of images. If you want to attach 17 particular images from between 11 November 2006 and 29 March 2007 to one description page, like the en.wikipedia page, then you can upload those images to Commons on top of each other, under a descriptive filename on the model of the other files, for example "File:New Horizons positions between 2006-11-11 and 2007-03-29.jpg". You can copy the information from the en.wikipedia upload history logs to the Commons description page. I don't think there's a way to duplicate identically the en.wikipedia page and make the Commons page look like the original uploads had been made to Commons. That is just my opinion. Maybe other users will have other suggestions. I'm not familiar with administrator tools and advanced tools. If you ask your question also on the administrators' noticeboard or on the Village pump, users with knowledge of those tools may have ideas about how to do more exactly what you want. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:42, 26 March 2016 (UTC)
The suggestion to have each file version be its own page may have merit.Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 16:38, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

LIVE BIOGRAPHY-DRAFT: Dr. Anthony Offu. PhD. 03/26/2016. Request for photo/image upload in the wikimedia commons. Thank you!

Dear wiki editor commons,

I have attached two photos/images for requesting uploading in addition to the article contents/text subject referenced aforementioned.

  • "Attached" to what? And offhand there is nothing we can do with them in any case without appropriate licensing (and even then only if you can explain why they would be in scope). - Jmabel ! talk 19:10, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Gaurav_Narayanan.jpg

Hi, I have taken the pictures from the interview on the news daily "The Hindu". I dont know what kind of license that is. Can you please help me here.

--Itsmypassion (talk) 16:55, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

I am afraid but this image is copyrighted and you do not have a permission to upload it to the Commons. Therefore the file should be deleted. Ruslik (talk) 17:55, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

Problem

I have a problem. I have uploaded 10 pictures of my mother Ilka Gedő. Not only do I have problem with copyrights, but all the ten pictures have the same file name.Ten different paintings with the same title.

I tried to fix this problem, but I can't. Perhaps the best thing would be to delete all the uploaded files. I guess I managed to do that yesterday, but the pre-deletion status was restored. I am on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Please help me delete images of ten different paintings now having the same title.

Your help would be very much appreciated.

I far as I can see you have uploaded only seven files on the Hungarian Wikipedia, of which four were deleted as duplicates. If you have any further questions, please, ask them on the Hungarian Wikipedia. Ruslik (talk) 18:02, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Edcash.jpg

Hello! I am having trouble locating anything regarding a copyright with this particular image by Ron Tandberg. I cannot even locate the original source where this was first seen. I feel this image works very well for the article I am working on. And I wish to know if there is a simpler way to locate it then simply running rampant on the internet searching with different tags to no avail.

--Umedi2016 (talk) 17:55, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

The oldest I found is of April 2008 from The Age where the image is EXIFd. I think there's no chance of free use. --Achim (talk) 18:45, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

Fixing a photo

Hi, I submitted a photo in my entry for C. K. Gunsalus, but I accidentally said that it was my photo. I have written permission from the photographer to use the photo, but now I need to correct what I've done. I can't figure out how to do that. Can you help me? It looks like the photo has recently been flagged and I don't want to get into any trouble with it. Thanks! The first result from a Google Image search reveals that it's actually a non-free photo by John Minchillo for the Associated Press, so if it ever was on Commons, it was probably deleted as a copyright violation. (Incidentally, if it had been published under a legitimate free copyright license, the UAB's credit would likely have been insufficient and therefore a copyright violation for that reason alone. Now it looks like it's a copyvio of a copyvio.) LX (talk, contribs) 18:28, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

licensing issues

Dear Wiki,

I uploaded two pictures and one book to wikimedia that are marked for deletion due to licensing issues. I would like to ask what license I need in order to upload those files. One of them is a drawing by my grandfather, who died 19 years ago. His son, i.e. my father, has published a book about him, where the drawing and another photograph are published. My father would like to release the book and its contents for free. Please let me know how I should proceed, so that I can add these three files in the wiki page of my grandfather (bg.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Михаил_Михайлов_(лекар)). Thank you in advance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Psyantyst (talk • contribs) 18:10, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

Martin Medina (Composer).tif

Dear Wikimedia Commons Help desk, I uploaded a photograph "Martin Medina (Composer).tif" to Wikimedia Commons. I am the subject of the photograph and I also took the photograph using a remote switch on my camera. The photograph was deleted with the reason being given that it was from IMDB. I uploaded the photo myself on my IMDB page as I am the copyright holder of the photograph. I then completed an OTRS form and submitted an undeletion request but received the following response "I don't see how the subject of this can also be the photographer." Would you be able to tell me if there is an underlying problem with my photograph please? Thanks and best wishes medinm01 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Medinm01 (talk • contribs) 20:42, 29 March 2016 (UTC) Medinm01 (talk) 21:38, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

You probably just need to wait for the OTRS process to complete. There's usually a long backlog. --ghouston (talk) 22:49, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

I am not sure why you think the license should be valid? Ruslik (talk) 18:25, 28 March 2016 (UTC)
I didn't think so either, but I have been surprised in other contexts, so... Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 05:40, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
I see no evidence that the copyright holder released the logo under the license stated but the logo may qualify as {{Pd-textlogo}}. Ruslik (talk) 19:06, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
Hello, since the uploader doesn't give proof that they are the copyright holder, I changed the file's license to {{PD-logo}}. Thanks, Poké95 03:38, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
