In this file -----> File:GiuseppeLeonardoAlbanese.jpg the current version is not the correct one. The old file was edited by me after the first upload. Please check for what reason appears the old version. Thenk you.--Battlelight~commonswiki (talk) 13:52, 30 November 2015 (UTC) PS:in alternative the old file can be deleted, thanks.--Battlelight~commonswiki (talk) 13:54, 30 November 2015 (UTC)

Your newest version is shown. You may see the older version because it still in the cache of your system, or in the cache of the servers. You will see the new version when the cache will update. You may also see it if you display the image in a different size on a page. On a different note, you may want to specify what you mean on the description page when you state that this image is your own work. I assume you're not saying that you are the painter François Gérard, because you would be dead since 1837. ;) If you mean that you personally took the photograph of the painting, please specify it on the description page to avoid any misunderstanding. If you copied the photograph from some other source, please specify clearly that source and the available informations about this reproduction. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:27, 30 November 2015 (UTC)
I have specified the source and the other elements of this reproduction of the painting (absolutely not my own work!). Thank you. --Battlelight~commonswiki (talk) 16:28, 30 November 2015 (UTC)
It is a reproduction of an exhibition catalog, not a photo of the painting. Greetings.--Battlelight~commonswiki (talk) 16:31, 30 November 2015 (UTC)

Want to use historical photograph from Civil War

Hi I want to use a historical Civil War photo of my ancestor who received a metal of Honor and add it to your pages. I do not know the exact age or photographer but have old photos. Can I upload them? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Russannrocks (talk • contribs) 23:13, 30 November 2015 (UTC)

  • If by "Civil War" you mean U.S. Civil War, there should typically be no problem, because the image should be old enough to be in the public domain. If you mean some other country, there might be an issue depending on when that photo would date from. - Jmabel ! talk 01:44, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

I uploaded File:Maryam Monsef.jpg from this site. The copyright page of that site reads the contents are published under creative commons license but has not specified the exact conditions (3 or 4, ND? or NC?) I just chose cc-by-sa-4.0 without any reason. Please correct me if I'm wrong. ‍‍‍‍‍4nn1l2 (talk) 03:59, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi, The copyright page does not say that the contents are under a CC license. It offers a non-commercial permission to use information. It also merely mentions in passing that some contents are published on social media sites such as twitter, facebook, etc., and that over there some contents may be under specified CC licenses on a case by case basis. I marked the file for deletion. Thanks for asking. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:01, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

New uploaded version of .SVG file won't become the current version

I've uploaded a new version of File:Rolamite.svg, created by downloading the old version, editing with an SVG editor, and uploading again. On the first upload attempt, I received a warning that the file was empty, even though it displayed correctly. On the second try, there was no warning message, but the new version did not become the current version. Now the first upload attempt showed in the history with the correct image, so I tried to revert to that one. The revert succeeded, and the history shows it, but the current version is still the wrong version. It's as if some cache update didn't take place. The generated PNG versions of the SVG file now show the new version, so that worked. This sounds a lot like the bug reported as "Thumbnail didn't load".

The corrected version is the one where the upper roller is at the left. --Nagle (talk) 21:18, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

  • I'm sure it's the same caching problem we've been seeing a lot this last week or so, and that it will eventually resolve. - Jmabel ! talk 23:50, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
    • Right. Using "?action=purge" cleaned up some, but not all, of the cached images in different sizes. Some got themselves into sync after about half an hour, and 24 hours later, all SVG and generated PNG versions seem to have updated. --Nagle (talk) 01:32, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

Script for removing credit bar

This page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Jetphotos.net_photos_(credit_bar) contains a lot of pictures with a creditbar. This category contains 700+ photos. Editing them all, one at a time, will cost a lot of time. Because all the photos have the creditbar at the exact same spot with the exact same width, it made me wonder whether the creditbars of these pictures can be removed with a specifically for this purpose designed script. Wereldburger758 (talk) 15:06, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

When the project Airliners was active, it used to be done automatically, as mentioned in the introduction to this category. I suppose you could ask User:Fæ how it is recommended to do it now and if there's a script that can be used. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:51, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

Wizard blocking the upload of photos saying it is a re-host when it is not

I have been having the problem of after putting in all the information for a picture the Wizard blocks the upload of the image. It highlights the title box in red and says

"This looks like a file you obtained from another image host. Please make the title more meaningful. Also, double check that you have the rights to publish it on this site."

At this point the upload button disappears and even if you change the title it will not reappear making it impossible to upload the pictures. This is extremely frustrating, especially with big uploads. I have found the wizard seems to do this whenever you end the name of your file with a date. A for sure way to get it is if you end your file name with 2015/12/03 or something like that. Please fix this so it stops blocking uploads, or at least make it so you can correct the title and then proceed to upload. as it is now. You spend half an hour preparing an upload and then this filter comes in and makes you start all over again from the beginning. (Sunfishtommy (talk) 21:59, 3 December 2015 (UTC))

It's always much easier to provide a specific answer if you ask a specific question and don't hold back on details like the actual specific source that you have in mind. I searched for that specific phrase on Google, and since it only appears on one single page, I'm guessing you're talking about Figure 2 in http://www.nature.com/articles/srep14719. That article has a {{Cc-by-4.0}} license notice at the bottom, which further clarifies that the license also applies to images unless otherwise indicated. Wikimedia Commons (this site) is a repository of free, educational media files used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. The free part is very important – it's a founding principle of Commons that we should only host content that can be used by anyone for any purpose. Most content that you find on the Internet is not free. Grabbing other people's non-free photos off the Internet and pasting them together does not make the result your own work, so you cannot upload it here under a free license. This also applies to File:Rajgarh Montage.png. Please read Commons:Project scope/Summary and Commons:Collages. LX (talk, contribs) 10:53, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

Advice for changing a widely used map image

Hi Commons,

I noticed that the standard locator map image we have for the US State of Rhode Island is this: File:Map of USA RI.svg, with what looks to be an MSPaint (or otherwise hastily drawn) inset. While I get that this was probably done because we did not have something better at the time, we certainly do now. For example, File:Rhode Island in United States (zoom) (extra close) (US48).svg. However, the popularity of the older image, its apparent design standardization with other images in the set, its standard naming convention, and its use in various templates make me think I should ask for advice and/or help on how to proceed.

If we were to find or produce a version that were consistent with the original but had a better inset, since all of the other much-used US State svg images look to be of that naming convention "Map of USA XX.svg", would it be appropriate to rename the old image and move the new one into that file name? Or just treat it as a new version of the same file? If the latter, would I need the original author's consent to do so?

Advice and/or help would be appreciated. Thanks. — Rhododendrites talk14:55, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

Generally that sort of change isn't encouraged, see Commons:Overwriting existing files. --ghouston (talk) 01:04, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
And if you want to rename files you'd need to deal with Commons:File renaming. This kind of thing potentially breaks attribution links from 3rd party sites. --ghouston (talk) 01:12, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
So how would you go about replacing a painfully inadequate image that has meanwhile become a standard? — Rhododendrites talk20:07, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
  • It's not clear exactly what you want to change. Is this about all of the locator maps of states, or only the ones with insets?
  • Could you do an SVG for one such state showing how you'd want to change it, and upload that to a distinct name so that the discussion can move forward on something concrete?
  • The number of uses in the various Wikipedias really isn't that enormous. If we wanted to substitute a new set of images, that could happen pretty quickly with a bot.
  • The reason this particular file is heavily used within Commons is that it is linked as an example of how to do this correctly! Clearly, if we now have what we can agree is a better way to do this, then we will want to replace it in the relevant template, Template:SVG locator maps (location map scheme). - Jmabel ! talk 20:27, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

Excel

Is it OK to use charts made with Excel on Commons. Crouch, Swale (talk) 15:23, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

You cannot upload spreadsheet documents (such as .xls or .xlsx files) to Commons, since they're not media files. Tabular data should instead be represented as tables in wiki markup. As for charts/diagrams based on such data, those can be uploaded to Commons – if you can figure out a way to get Microsoft Excel to save them as images, which seems harder than it should be. If you install Libreoffice (which is free software), you can simply open the files, right-click on the chart and select "Export as image". Use SVG (preferred for this type of image, but the Mediawiki software's support for it can be a bit quirky) or PNG (also OK). LX (talk, contribs) 15:56, 9 December 2015 (UTC)
What I have made is a chart on Excel like File:Occupational Structure of Swilland, Suffolk, according to the 1811 Census.jpg/ Crouch, Swale (talk) 16:00, 9 December 2015 (UTC)
Yes, that would be fine to upload. There are, however, two things I'd recommend doing differently compared to that file. First, you should avoid saving the file as JPEG, which is not a suitable format for this type of image (so use SVG or PNG instead). Secondly, a copyright license such as {{cc-by-sa-3.0}} does not make much sense for an image that doesn't have any original expression eligible for copyright protection (so use {{PD-shape}} instead). Hi at all. The Category:Ferrara has been invaded by all sorts of categories of artists and works of art that have to do with Ferrara, and also by the relative templates "creator". Sure the problem is in a template, but I have not been able to find where the error is. Can some expert solve this problem? Thank you very much. --DenghiùComm (talk) 20:00, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Alright, here's what's happening. Let's take this as our example file.
  • The file description page includes {{Creator:Giovanni Boldini}}
  • Creator:Giovanni Boldini passes Ferrara as the deathloc parameter to the {{Creator}} template.
  • Through some convoluted syntax in the <!-- Birth/Death location --> section of {{Creator}}, eventually, {{City|Ferrara}} gets called
  • Some more convoluted syntax in the STEP 3 section of {{City}} detects that there is a template called {{Ferrara}}, so that gets called
  • {{Ferrara}}, unlike for example {{Helsinki}} is not a translation template as {{City}} expects. Instead, it seems to have no other purpose than to categorise content that invokes the template into Category:Ferrara. That's just a guess, though, as the template has no documentation whatsoever and was created without an edit summary. You might wish to ask User:Mhmrodrigues, who created the template, about their intentions.
LX (talk, contribs) 20:33, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
I'm sorry, if I understand the problem is the {{Ferrara}}, that does not meet the function for which seems have been created, the translation in several languages of exonyms, plus an obvious problem in the management of the categories. I delete the template before would listen to the explanations, do not you? If it is a noticeable lightness in operating I do not understand all this caution. Redundancy in geographical subdivition categories

Hello, here I talked with @DenghiùComm: about a categorization issue. He rollbacked my removal asserting that the Category:Regions of Italy is not redundant in Category:Municipalities in Italy by region, even if there are already Category:Geography of Italy by region and Category:Categories of Italy by region (also these two belong to "Regions of Italy").

To my question «so why in Category:Regions of Italy we don't have also Category:Buildings in Italy by region?» he replied «now there are only the categories related to administrative divisions».

My question are: Is this correct? Where is been this decided? Why should be like that?

For example, would it be correct if Category:States of the United States contained Regions of the United States by state, even if the latter is already contained in Categories of the United States by state? --Horcrux92 (talk) 17:05, 10 December 2015 (UTC)

To me, it seems clear that you are correct. But that's just my opinion. Municipalities are municipalities, so «Municipalities in Italy by region» is a subcategory of «Municipalities in Italy», which is the place where users will naturally look for it, and a subcategory of «Categories of Italy by region». Municipalities are not regions, so «Municipalities in Italy by region» should not be a direct subcategory of «Regions of Italy». It is the same for other countries. For example, «Cities in the United States by state» is a subcategory of «Cities in the United States» and a subcategory of «Categories of the United States by state». «Cities in the United States by state» is not a direct subcategory of «States of the United States». -- Asclepias (talk) 20:23, 10 December 2015 (UTC)
Italy has a fairly complex administrative division. We have regions; these are divided into provinces; these are divided into municipalities; these latter may have different villages. Now in the Category:Regions of Italy we have all the regions of Italy; ok. Then we have some other categories that are different level of search. We can need to know which municipalities are in each region, so there is the Category:Municipalities in Italy by region; if we want to know which provinces are in a region, we have the Category:Provinces of Italy by region; and so if we need to know all the villages which fall in the same region, we have the Category:Villages in Italy by region. These categories are different levels of search, tools for all people who want to know the regions of Italy and its subdivisions. Horcrux92 delete them as an overcategorization; i rollbacked it. The error was in the presence in the cat "Regions of Italy" of the Category:Categories of Italy by region which is a maintenance category (flat list) of all categories of Italy by region. But a flat list is an upper (mother) category, so it cannot be in an lower-level (sister) category. So I delete it, but Horcrux92 rollbacked it; and opened this thread. Perhaps the problem is the name of these categories: perhaps if the category "Municipalities in Italy by region" will be "Regions of Italy by municipality" (and so "Provinces of Italy by region" ---> "Regions of Italy by province" and "Villages in Italy by region" ---> "Regions of Italy by village") Horcrux92 would accept them, I don't know... I repeat: IMO these categories are not overcategorizations, but different levels of search (like we have so much examples in Commons: e.g. Architecture by continent, by country, by region, by city). Best regards, --DenghiùComm (talk) 08:45, 11 December 2015 (UTC)
Yes, I would accept that, but the meaning of the categories would be different (in this case, the name "Regions of Italy by province" would be meaningless).
Again, the error is not the presence of Category:Categories of Italy by region in Category:Regions of Italy (what's the matter of this?), but the presence of Category:Municipalities in Italy by region in Category:Regions of Italy, since:
  1. municipalities are not regions;
  2. it is already contained in Category:Categories of Italy by region;
  3. it is already contained in Category:Geography of Italy by region.
And the exclusive presence of a handful of categories by a criterium decided by yourself is wrongful, even if -or since- you were just trying to not overfill it. --Horcrux92 (talk) 09:08, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

I repeat: municipalities are in the regions; and Categories of categories are maintenance categories (usually hiddencats), so they have nothing to do with the category trees. Finally the Geography category is another branch which regards topographic features; here we have to do with administrative subdivisions; it's another matter. --DenghiùComm (talk) 09:44, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

Here I can't read that meta-cats (not hiddencats) are exclusively maintenance categories. Since it is not hidden, it is a category to all intents and purposes, part of the main tree. And, again, I'm very annoyed that you consider only the part of categories you care of, instead of aligning with the general pattern and implicit consensus. --Horcrux92 (talk) 11:15, 11 December 2015 (UTC)
In fact metacats are not hiddencats; but Categories of categories, and flat lists of metacats are maintenance categories (usually hiddencats). I think that you are a little confused and have not clear idea about categories and the category system. --DenghiùComm (talk) 14:31, 11 December 2015 (UTC)
Well, I hope that in line with your thought you'll go to edit all other categories of this type (since no one except for you does it) and I'm sure no one will rollback you cause you're so right. --Horcrux92 (talk) 14:48, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

photo usage question

I have copies of two photograph, supplied by a member of the Australian Jazz Quartet (Jack Brokensha, now deceased), taken by a New York firm one of which I would like to use in the Wikipedia page The Australian Jazz Quartet. The photographer was James J. Kriegsmann (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_J._Kriegsmann), and the photo was taken in the neighborhood of 1954. I believe his son James J. Kriegsmann Jr. has taken over the company. I emailed Mr. Kriegsmann in 2011 and received casual permission to use the photos (see below). Is this good enough? If not, what do I need to do to enable uploading one of these photos to the Australian Jazz Quartet page? I would appreciate help in getting these

Dear Mr. Kriegsmann,

I have copies of two photos taken by your studio about 1954 of members of the Australian Jazz Quartet/Quintet which I would potentially like to use for a Wikipedia page on this group. I believe this page will serve a useful historical purpose. There seems to be no quality photo of the group on the web.

Does the copyright still hold?

If so, can you provide me with permission to use the pictures for this purpose?

Thanks much for your help,

License help about: http://www.spacex.com/media

Hi!

Can I upload these photos here from http://www.spacex.com/media (or use them at a Wiki page)? The site says: "To the extent possible under law, www.spacex.com has waived all copyright and related or neighboring rights to this work. This work is published from: United States."

Can I upload somebody's photo giving the link to it on the original website? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tigran Tovmasyan 298 (talk • contribs) 17:27, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you are asking, but let me try to answer three things you may mean.
  1. Most images that are on the web are not OK for Commons. The image needs either to be in the public domain or to be available under a sufficiently free license. See COM:SCOPE for further details.
  2. In general, unless you have certain privileges given to very experienced users, you cannot upload directly from a website. You need to download to your machine, then upload from your machine to Commons.
  3. When you upload an image that originally came from elsewhere on the web, you should typically state the source as the URL of the page on which you found the image. - Jmabel ! talk 17:50, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
No, not unless the copyright holder has approved publication under a free license (and you comply with the licensing terms) or released the photo into the public domain. Please read Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Internet images and Commons:Project scope/Summary to understand what you can and cannot upload to Commons. Having difficulty in submitting pictures to the monthly challenge

I have been trying to submit a picture to the red & white challenge of the month of December 2015 at no avail. The link I click at the bottom of the entries is taking me to a "not yet created" page. I am not sure whether I need to create that page and upload my entry there or... is there a problem with the link? Any clarification would be highly appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adonart (talk • contribs) 02:50, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

Yes, the link at the bottom of the page looks broken. I guess clicking "edit" next to the section "Entries" should take you to the right place. -- Asclepias (talk) 04:51, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

So, about a month after I started editing, I uploaded the logo for Kettering Ohio. I included very little in the way of description or licensing or what have you. Over the years since 2006, licenses have been added and migrated and whatnot, and now the image has been moved over to Commons. Trick is, I don't think it's actually a free image. I added non-free tags and a Fair Use Rationale over at enwiki, but am not sure how to proceed here. If it's non free, can it remain with the proper tags? Or does it need to be deleted? Or am I totally off base - are the official logos of United States municipalities considered free? I'm good with it either way - like I said, it's been a long time and I never though to followup. And I do very little with Commons as such, so I'm not sure what to do or how to do it. Thanks in advance for the assist. Ultraexactzz (talk) 13:40, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

  • If it's non-free, it shouldn't be here on Commons. And official logos of United States municipalities are not inherently free. This is probably just above the threshold of originality that makes it copyrightable; the only way it would be public domain is if it was used before 1978 without a copyright notice. It looks like the problem derived from you originally stating that a GFDL license applied.
  • So keep the version on en-wiki (and probably remove the tag about it being available on Commons); I'll nominate the one here on Commons for deletion. - Jmabel ! talk 17:55, 11 December 2015 (UTC)
  • Ah, I see it is already tagged for eventual deletion based on lack of permission; since you as the original uploader agree that it is a copyvio, I can kill it right away. - Jmabel ! talk 17:57, 11 December 2015 (UTC)
OK - Thanks! Ultraexactzz (talk) 13:52, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

How to replace a huge JPG with a smaller and more suitable PNG

Hi,

I found the image https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Robert_Kennedy_assassination_-_cropped.JPG and was surprised with its huge size (664 kB) with regard to its content.

I converted it to a 4-bit (enough for this content) grayscale PNG and resulted in 111 kB (17 % of the original).

I'd like to replace it.

Do you find it good idea? And if so, how can I do that? (I have tried the link "Upload a new version of this file" but it didn't work because of a different file type. I've also read Commons:File renaming and Commons:Duplicate but I'm still not sure.)

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avayak (talk • contribs) 15:49, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

Edit every file in a category?

Category:Annual report of the secretary of the State Horticultural Society of Michigan (1881) needs to be moved as the book these images are from was published in 1911, covering the facts of the year 1910. The date can be seen in the title page. The book series may have begun in 1881 but that is not the date of this volume. More difficult is changing the date in every file description in the category. What is the best way to do this? Also half the image need rotating. I can't find any mass request tool for rotating image. Is there any way? Rmhermen (talk) 05:24, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

  • Both of these are pretty straightforward with VisualFileChange. For the former, you could (for example) replace every instance of "Category:Annual report of the secretary of the State Horticultural Society of Michigan (1881)" with "Category:Annual report of the secretary of the State Horticultural Society of Michigan (1911)". For the latter, you could prepend (for example) "{{rotate|90}}" (followed by a carriage return) to each relevant file (you'd check the boxes for only the ones you want affected). Let me know (here) whether you want to try the tool yourself so you can learn it, or whether you'd rather have someone else follow up on this. - Jmabel ! talk 06:45, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
You don't want to replace every instance of ...1881 by ...1911. The images are taken from the reports of various years. Some are from 1889, 1898, 1908, etc. If you just replace everything with 1911, you'll end up replacing a wrong year with another wrong year. -- Asclepias (talk) 07:18, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
Asclepias is presumably correct: I didn't look at the particular pages, just at Rmhermen's question. If they need to each be classified to a potentially different year, then there is no substitute for going through one by one. - Jmabel ! talk 17:45, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
He is right. Looks like I checked two at random that were both 1911 - but further checking I see from the 1890s to at least 1916. I will request a category move to a name without a date and have to look at each file for the year. Rmhermen (talk) 20:09, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

I'm totally confused and discouraged about how to do this. I think I haven't the time to deal properly with submitting the images. I've had multiple computer problems which have complicated my sharing images and tracing the original sources, even when I own the object or photograph which I am sharing from my own photo files. Usually when uploading the files, I describe and tell all information which I know about the source.

I am not adequately familiar with all the licensing designations. In this file under discussion here, I can say in addition that my husband lived in Aspen Hall as a child and I was trying to find a photo to use to illustrate the draft of an article about his father Dr. Edward Cornelius Humphrey. Somewhere in my own real (not digitized) photo files I have old pictures of Aspen Hall. Even if I photographed those, I would not know who shot the original image or what license to use. I was recently told by one Wikipedia editor that the draft of the article for which the Aspen Hall photo was intended would soon be purged because I had spent too long working on it before submitting. I also saw that, even though Aspen Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic places, I could not find an image of it along with its listing on Wikipedia.Mitzi.humphrey (talk) 23:29, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

--Mitzi.humphrey (talk) 23:29, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

  • Sadly, we aren't going to be able to accept that photo, because it is presumably copyrighted and we don't have a release. Basically Commons policy is that we accept only photos that are either in the public domain, or where the rights are licensed in a way that allows anyone to reproduce it, including making derivatives and including commercial use. Unless an image is only in the public domain, only the holder of the rights can release the relevant rights, and in the case of this picture you are presumably not that rights-holder.
  • For family photos of the building that you could scan, if you know who took them and either that person or their heir can release the rights, we'd love to have those uploaded here. If you have such photos and the relevant permission, and have further questions about how to upload those and make the rights situation clear, I'd be glad to help, or you can just ask the specific questions here on this page. - Jmabel ! talk 23:48, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

Passport photo upload

Hi there! I'd like to add a passport photo to an article, but how and where do I upload it? I didn't take the photo myself, but I believe a passport photo is only protected by portrait rights. I can get the person on the picture to confirm its fine. Thanks in advance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pen&Papier (talk • contribs) 16:08, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Hmm..Isn't it the author of the photo (the photographer), rather than the person(s) on the picture, who has to give its consent?--Lubiesque (talk) 16:29, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
In most jurisdictions, copyright works the same way for passport photographs as it does for other types of portrait photographs or all other photographs in general. If the photograph was taken by a human being (whether they're a studio photographer or government official), they are the copyright holder. Exceptions include photographs created by government officials in jurisdictions that exempt government works from copyright protection (such as the US). Photographs from photo booths may either be ineligible for copyright protection, or may be considered the subject's own work. Unless the photograph is in the public domain, you will need to obtain licensing permission from the copyright holder. LX (talk, contribs) 16:38, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
Okay I understand your reactions, but I picked up on a discussion in Dutch: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:De_kroeg/Archief/20140706#Portretrecht referring to the absence of copyright protection for the author of a passport picture. I'm utterly confused now. The picture I'm referring to was made at a conference of participants, the organization no longer exists and the picture was sent to all participants without copyright claims or referals. Is the conclusion that - discussion on passport pics or not - I'll just have to get the author of a picture to consent anyhow??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pen&Papier (talk • contribs) 18:33, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
That discussion seems quite confused and seems to focus on photos taken in photo booths. Such photos may or may not be ineligible for copyright protection. Unless you can reference case law from the relevant jurisdiction, one should err on the side of caution and assume that they are protected by copyright, in which case the person using the photo booth is most likely the copyright holder.
But far from all passport photographs are taken in photo booths. I've had a passport photograph taken by a professional studio photographer in the past, and these days, photos for Swedish passports have to be taken by an employee at the police station. In such cases, the copyright holder would be the photographer rather than the person appearing in the photo. LX (talk, contribs) 18:52, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Okay, thanks guys! I'll be super cautious and find another way then.

Uploading images of old coins

Hello. A while back, I had a dozen pictures of old coins I had uploaded on Commons deleted because they were deemed "three-dimensional". The pictures had been taken from eBay and online coin dealers' sites. Does anyone know if I would I face the same copyright issue if I were to upload similar pictures from coin encyclopedias or catalogues, such as the annual Standard Catalog of World Coins ("two-dimensional", in my opinion)?--Lubiesque (talk) 16:48, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

I would think the problem is that the coins themselves are 3-dimensional, which is just as much the case for that catalogue. Any photo of a 3-dimensional object is in some degree creative.
For older coins, if you have access (possibly online) to older catalogues, old enough to be out of copyright themselves, that should be OK. - Jmabel ! talk 17:40, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
An engraved coin is a three-dimensional object, because it has a texture that casts shadows and reflects light in different ways depending on the angle of the lighting. When photographing a coin, a photographer always has to make a decision about at least the lighting aspect. That decision-making is what makes even seemingly simple head-on photographs of coins eligible for copyright protection. Whether those photos appear on the Internet or in a printed publication really makes no difference. LX (talk, contribs) 17:48, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, that's what I feared. I did find one or two online sources that were old enough to be out of copyright but those 100-year-old photographs of coins are not very appealing. There were also engravings of coins, which I thought then would have been a better choice than the photos. --Lubiesque (talk) 18:28, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

  • That image is not free content, and cannot be used in Commons except in the unlikely event that you can get the copyright holder to free-license it. Most images on the Internet are not eligible for use in Commons (nor in Wikipedia, though the story is more complicated there). We accept only images that are in the public domain or for which the copyright-holder has granted a sufficiently free license. - Jmabel ! talk 17:47, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Zhombe.pdf

I believe the file has a free licence because it has been on the web since 2007 until sometime this year when they switched it with the new version. I however am not sure of the type of licence. The file was produced by the Parliament of Zimbabwe Research Department prior the 200 General Elections. Its original address was http://www.parlzim.gov.zw/attachments/article/136/Zhombe.pdf and meant for public download. The current version address is http://www.parlzim.gov.zw/component/k2/download/1263_036d7cdd841f5951901e14be4fd1d74c also meant for public download. That the file has been on the web since 2007 does not mean that it has ever been freely licensed. Ruslik (talk) 13:29, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

Since 1996 Parliamentary publications has been offered free access both in office and on the web. This makes me believe the "Zhombe.pdf" document has a free licence. Please read the following:

PARLIAMENTARY REFORMS

  1. 6. "The main objectives of these two projects were: To strengthen the capacity of Members

and officers of Parliament to assume greater policy formulation tasks; To establish policy based Portfolio Committees, including the Budget Committee, with substantive terms of reference, operational guidelines and working rules; and To raise the visibility and profile of Parliament as a development policy shaping, formulation and implementation institution. --Jaisondlovu (talk) 10:29, 19 December 2015 (UTC)

If you believe it is covered by a free license, you should be able to identify which license. If you can't, it's probably because the copyright holder hasn't actually released it under a free license. Perhaps you're confusing freedom of information (which is unrelated to copyright) and public domain (which is not a license, but the absence of copyright protection). Content that is subject to freed of of information is not necessarily free from a copyright perspective. LX (talk, contribs) 13:09, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
Free access does not mean free license. Ruslik (talk) 13:11, 19 December 2015 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:JuanCarlosValeronUDLP1.png

Hi,

I have uploaded https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:JuanCarlosValeronUDLP1.png, the picture was taken from a television broadcast and I'm not sure if it's something copyrighted or what. I have provided the related informations such as attributes but it still appears like this on licensing section:

The uploader did not provide sufficient information (a valid and suitable tag) on this media's copyright status. Unless the copyright status is provided, the file could be deleted seven days after the upload (9 December 2015). Please note that Commons does not accept files claimed under fair use. It is suggested to read the intro of Commons' licensing policy, about essential information and (in many cases) about Internet images. If you need help ask at the Commons:Help desk.

Could you please help, thank you.

  • If it was taken from a television broadcast it is almost certainly copyrighted. Do you nave any reason to think otherwise for this particular image? See COM:SCOPE for a discussion of what images we can host here: basically, it either has to be public domain, or the copyright-holder has to grant a sufficiently free license. Neither appears to apply here. - Jmabel ! talk 02:23, 10 December 2015 (UTC)

How to upload a new version of an image

Hi, there does not seem to be a possibility to upload a new version of an image I created. I've been struggling with this for some time, now and in past few years, but with no luck. It's a bit frustrating that such a basic functionality is not supported and/or properly documented. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Petulda (talk • contribs) 14:34, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

It's actually pretty simple, although easy to overlook: Just click on "Upload a new version of this file" at the file's description page. Note however, that the new version must be of the same filetype, meaning you can't update a PNG image with its SVG counterpart. --Magnus (talk) 14:38, 21 December 2015 (UTC)
Apparently, the user's problem persists. See also User talk:Petulda#New version of a file. -- Asclepias (talk) 06:39, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

Resolved

I posted my first change to a wiki page and received a message that it might be deleted

I wanted to supply a picture for a page. Actually, the page asked if anyone had a picture to supply one. I found a picture of this person on a public site (for an award he received). The message I received said, "I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear."

1. What can I do to correct this? 2. How can I contact the person who sent me the 'reject'?

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Dovgreen (talk • contribs) 17:25, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

Commons can only accept images that are clearly licensed under a free or public domain license (COM:SCOPE for details). Even images that are freely available on the web are still subject to copyright unless there is an explicit notice saying otherwise. In fact, the TOS of that website explicitly says that its content is not free ([5]).
You might be able to upload the image to a Wikipedia site as COM:FAIRUSE.
The person who contacted you has signed their name under their message, and you can find their User Talk page by clicking on it and going to the Discussion tab. (You should also sign your name on things with ~~~~. BMacZero (talk) 18:15, 22 December 2015 (UTC)
  • To sum this up another way: most pictures you find on the Internet are not freely available to reuse. The reason many articles lack a picture isn't usually that no one could find a picture at all: it's because no one could find a suitably licensed picture. - Jmabel ! talk 01:31, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

This File:INTERIOR VIEW OF OPERA HOUSE - Springer Opera House, 105 Tenth Street, Columbus, Muscogee County, GA HABS GA,108-COLM,31-2.tif is a much higher resolution version of File:Springer Opera House - Interior (Columbus, Georgia).jpg. How can the low-resolution JPG be replaced with high-resulition TIFF? Bubba73 (talk) 07:05, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

  • It can't, though (1) you can link them with {{Other version}}, (2) in any given article you can choose to use the TIFF rather than the JPEG, and (3) there is nothing to stop you generating a higher-resolution JPEG derived from the TIFF and uploading that as a new version of the JPEG. - Jmabel ! talk 16:04, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

What is needed is for the copyright holder of the photograph (typically the photographer rather than the subject) to agree to publish it under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute it for any purpose, including commercial purposes. (Copyright issues aside, your personality rights may still prevent some commercial uses.) Instructions, standard release form and address can be found here. Bot rejecting my uploads over a small mistake I'm currently working on correcting

I just uploaded a batch of photos. I did not transclude the source details correctly, so I've been going back and correcting that, but it appears the bot is already rejecting them. Are there any human beings using their brains out there, or is this place completely run by bots anymore? I'm really hoping that I'm not wasting my time here just because I failed to perform a single step correctly and that these uploads are going to be deleted out of hand as a result. Deletion nomination: procedurial questions

The file was nominated for deletion in commons: Commons:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Man with a full chest tattoo. Le Petit Prince, Yuri Gararin, Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. Space background. Color.jpg

Questions:

  • What is the procedure to explain that this nomination is wrong? What happens if nominator just does not anwer to the questions in the nominations page or does not provide any reaction to the explanations why nomination is wrong?
  • How can I "ping" the user? I am getting sometimes notifications from my Talk page. If I edit user's Talk page, does he/she receieves notification? Sometimes people just don't react to the mofications of their Talk pages. Is there a way to be sure the user really READ your statement?
  • How to provide consent of the creator of art object (in this specific case, tattoist) to use the image of art in Wikimedia Commons (under free license)? He is OK with this but how shall he let it be known? Shall he be registered at Wikimedia commons?
  • What is the procedure to remove the image from deletion nomination?

Vitaly Repin (talk) 09:26, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

I'm guessing you mean Commons:Deletion requests/File:Man with a full chest tattoo. Le Petit Prince, Yuri Gararin, Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. Space background. Color.jpg.
  • The correct procedure to respond to a deletion nomination is to comment in the deletion discussion, as you have done. The administrator who closes the discussion will take into account comments from all parties when deciding the outcome.
  • You can attract a user's attention by linking to their user page, like User:Vitaly repin, or by leaving a message on their user talk page. They will get a notification either way (unless they've actively disabled such notifications). There is no way to know whether a user has read your comments unless they respond.
  • Licensing permissions from third parties should be documented using our standard template and e-mailed to our permission archive.
  • User:LX, is it simpler if an artist has its own account in commons? How shall consent be given in this case? The problem here is that three persons are involved: 1) photographer (OK, gave his permission during photo uploading 2) model ("consent of identifiable person" OK as photographer has this consent and just needs to state it, the model himself shall not send any legal consent to wikimedia commons, do I understand it right?) 3) Tattoo artist (What is the easiest way for him to privide the consent if he is willing to have his own account at Commons?) Vitaly Repin (talk) 10:28, 24 December 2015 (UTC)
  • Deletion discussions are normally closed by administrators. See Commons:Deletion requests for more information. You should not attempt to remove the deletion discussion notices from the file description page while the discussion is ongoing.
LX (talk, contribs) 10:10, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

Vitaly Repin, please don't comment inside other people's comments, as it makes it hard to understand who wrote what. Since anyone can register an account on Commons under any name, it doesn't really help with this verification if the tattoo artist has an account. Presumably, a professional tattoo artist would have their own domain name and an official e-mail address under that domain, which is why e-mail is the recommended method for permission verification. Deletion discussions usually run for at least seven days; this is mentioned in Commons:Deletion requests. LX (talk, contribs) 12:27, 25 December 2015 (UTC)

I ask you kindly deleting the old version of this image (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/8/84/20151129171930!GiuseppeLeonardoAlbanese.jpg) that remains in the history of web (preview of google for example), preventing the view of the current version. Thanks and merry christmas ;).--Battlelight~commonswiki (talk) 10:16, 25 December 2015 (UTC)

I don't see what that would accomplish. Google will eventually cache the new version, and I don't think deleting the old one will make that happen any sooner. LX (talk, contribs) 13:01, 25 December 2015 (UTC)

Problem uploading intact PDF's system keeps splitting them up upon upload

I asked a question earlier but I don't see it here. Possibly because I edited the page like a normal wiki page instead of using the question box that I just discovered, sorry about that. I'm having trouble uploading full pdf's as a single entity. They are showing up in the commons as 1 page 1 page of a PDF that was only one document on my computer and here it becomes 30. How do I ensure that the PDF's are uploaded intact? I tried to re upload the same documents that I thought hadn't been uploaded before but system said they were already uploaded. How long does it take for uploaded material to show up under my uploads button on top right of screen? When I go to this link which is my contributions page main page I only see a few articles when in actuality I uploaded at least 100 https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/Notgoingtotellyou&ilshowall=1 . Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated :-) Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Notgoingtotellyou (talk • contribs) 10:28, 25 December 2015 (UTC)

I'm having trouble uploading intact pdf's. They are being split upon upload and categorized as individual articles within the commons instead of just as one article. I uploaded at least 100 and I can only see a few of them under MY UPLOADS BUTTON where are the rest? Do they need to be checked approved of first? I uploaded them about 4 hours ago so long does it take to approve them? How do I erase the ones that got split up and replace them with the intact pdf? My contributions list only lists about 3 articles also where are the records for the other 97 that I uploaded? I know they uploaded because when I tried to re upload them it says they were already on file with the commons. Thanks in advance for your help :-) P.S. Sorry about asking the questions wrong several times it's my first time here.Notgoingtotellyou (talk) 10:39, 25 December 2015 (UTC) UPDATE I searched for the ones that the system said were already uploaded and thus wouldn't let me upload them again and I couldn't find them on the commons. How to allow someone else to upload files to my commons account/username profile

I Want to collaborate on a article with multiple people who would need to upload documents to my account. How is this done, and can I just provide a link that goes directly to the page to upload files into my account or is it more complicated than that? ThanksNotgoingtotellyou (talk) 00:11, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

The other people should register accounts of their own. According to the Terms of Use for all Wikimedia sites, you are responsible for safeguarding your own password and should never disclose it to any third party. LX (talk, contribs) 00:27, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

Ok so I take it there is no guest upload privilege possible without logging into my account? Can my account be made public so as to allow anyone with the link to upload to it? Otherwise having multiple accounts and having to check them would be troublesome. It will contain hundreds of articles and it is easier to have them in one database as apposed to several. Thanks in advance for your helpNotgoingtotellyou (talk) 00:53, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

Everyone who uploads is personally responsible for their own uploads, so everyone should use their own account. There aren't separate databases per user account, so I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish. Related content should be linked using categories and galleries, not by being uploaded with a certain account. LX (talk, contribs) 10:36, 26 December 2015 (UTC)
You can create a "hidden category" / "user category" and all use it in your uploads. - Jmabel ! talk 19:03, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

Museum category flooded with images from Flickr, how do I organise a bot-assisted mass recategorisation and/or stop this from happening

Resolved

Hi all. I wandered over to Category:Australian National Maritime Museum to see that it has been flooded with 2,600 images since the last time I saw it. 99% of these images appear to have been bot-uploaded en-mass from Flickr's the Commons. It means having to trawl through a lot of pages to find images of the museum and its exhibits in between the hundreds of images sourced from the museum's collections.

My questions (as someone more familiar with English Wikipedia processes than those on Wikimedia Commons) are:

  1. Where do I go and who do I annoy to request bot assistance for the identifying and recategorising of all the images from the museum's collections into a relevant subcategory (such as Category:Images from the Australian National Maritime Museum) so the main category is for images of the museum. As a subquestion, would such a recategorisation be appropriate?
  2. Is there anything that can be set up so that future mass uploads from Flickr are redirected into the subcategory, or is this just something I'll have to keep an eye on on a regular basis?

Thanks in advance. -- saberwyn 04:24, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

  • I think you might do better to create a subcat for the building itself than to try to prevent something that inevitably will happen again. - Jmabel ! talk 08:25, 24 December 2015 (UTC)
    • So the main category for the subject will not be about the subject? The category about the subject will be displaced a subcat-level or two? Not the response I was hoping for. Will attempt to recategorise manually and make a not to clean the category on a regular basis. -- saberwyn 11:05, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
    • Issue resolved. After doing over 600 manually, I discovered Cat-a-lot, which is now my new best friend. -- saberwyn 22:36, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

Understanding project scope, educational value and deletion

Sometimes I go to the "media needing categories" category and just pick a random page and request deletion of some unused personal photos and clear copyright violations. Among the countless images I often see pictures for which it seems very hard to imagine an educational use but which are not strictly "personal photos". I have read the COM:SCOPE and tried to find more information on the concept of educational value. Despite this I am a bit unclear as to what exactly can be considered "educational" and how it is to be measured.

Let me ask about some examples from this page [6]:

1. This [7] and this [8] are images taken at some seminar in Bangladesh in 2011. Are these images educational? We see guys sitting behind a table and a guy standing on a podium, important guys, I am sure. What do these images illustrate? That these people were there at that moment? That such a seminar was held? What the seminar looked like? What guys sitting behind a table look like? Are both images necessery? Is one better than the other?

2. What about this one [9]? It has a description "Wing with 4 colored feathers". What is it, exactly? A logo of some sort? Logo of what? What is its educational value? Can it illustrate something? Can it illustrate something better than something else? The picture is described as a "wing". What is meant by that? The shape? Is it a good picture of a "wing"? Do the colors signify something? Are the colors educational?

3. In [10] we see two people, or rather their backs. They are doing something by a table. We can't really see what they are doing, the image is blurry. The description is in Spanish, and it might reveal what the picture is of, but whatever it is, is this picture a good representation of that? Does a blurry photo of the people with their backs turned to the camera doing something by a table educational? What is the educational value of this image?

4. Ah, more guys behind podiums [11]. The picture appears to be from some seminar held by some president of some South American country and the speaker appears to be a president of some South American country. This is one of many similar images from the same seminar. Many of the questions asked in 1. hold. What does this illustrate? How does it educate it's viewer? Do we need many pictures of the same seminar?

5. [12] is a cluttered image of a building, apparently. The "Quin Yi build", we are told. Now, one might imagine a need to use a picture of a given building. However, are all pictures of all buildings educational? Is this one? What is the probablity that this particular image of this particular building will be used in any way at all? Is there some principle that can be used? Are there other pictures of this building? Could there be?

6. Last one, clear cut, I'd say [13]. The image appears to show a, well, chicken made of cloth and glasses and such in front of a whiteboard full of crude drawings. Is this educational or useful in any way? I'd say no, and so would others, I suspect. But, who knows, maybe this is some kind of Spanish traditional hand puppet or other tradition and this is in some way the best possible illustration of that. How certain should we be of this? Voltteri (talk) 07:14, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

It is unlikely that you receive any answers here. It is not a Commons' job to decide what is in scope and what is not. Ruslik (talk) 12:06, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
Can you elaborate what you mean by that statement? If it is not "Commons' job" to decide what is in the scope of the project, whose job is it? The COM:SCOPE, which is official policy of Wikimedia Commons, essentially states that there are two main issues that define the scope of the project when it comes to files: 1) must be freely licensed or public domain and 2) must be realistically useful for an educational purpose. (Omitted some technical requirements.) The first issue is constantly discussed, and it seems that questions regarding copyright and licencing are perfectly fine topics for this page as well. Statements about Commons only accepting freely usable content or some specific file having had issues with copyright are very common, it seems. However, you state that the second point that defines the scope, the "must be realistically useful for an educational purpose" is not something that can be discussed or decided here. I am not saying that you are not correct, I mainly wish to understand the scope and application of the policy stating that a file "must be realistically useful for an educational purpose". Voltteri (talk) 13:01, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
Hi, If you think an image is not within scope, please nominate it for deletion. Some of your examples are in scope, but poor quality images (i.e. File:Quitando_papel_encerado.jpg) are not. Regards, Yann (talk) 14:46, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
Example 1: certainly in scope. I'd say that at almost any conference of that sort, photos of the presenters are pretty much ipso facto in scope.
Example 2: no idea, but seems harmless. I tend to allow more leeway for things that are well done (this certainly is) on the theory that they might be useful someday.
Example 3 shows the removal of wax paper from bread after taking it out of an oven. Judging by the user's other contributions, it is part of a sequence about baking bread in some country. Almost certainly a keeper, but someone (presumably someone with decent Spanish) would want to go through the user's uploads and work out what best to do with these.
Example 4: well, your description is not quite correct (and I'm not going into it here) but pretty much any photo of a head of state is in scope.
Example 5: If we have good pictures of the same building from a similar angle, then this bad one isn't very useful. But, yes, pictures of almost any building are potentially useful, if only because 20 years from now the place may look entirely different. Obviously, low-quality pictures are not nearly as useful as better ones, but usually it's not worth the time to work out whether to get rid of them.
Example 6: Looks pretty useless, and the only other upload from this user is another picture of the same.
In general: when in doubt in terms of notability, keep. It's not like it costs us something. Also, if you really don't read Spanish, perhaps you are not the one to try to classify material with only Spanish-language descriptions. - Jmabel ! talk 18:54, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

license problems

Hello, I just noticed that my photo: " MUDAM, Luxembourg-Kirchberg, LU " which I uploaded yesterday has license warnings ??? It is my own picture, it shows o n l y the outside building - so I cannot see where the problem is.

Please tell me and I will do my best to solve it. Best greetings from Luxembourg, Denise Hastert — Preceding unsigned comment added by Denise Hastert (talk • contribs) 09:09, 28 December 2015‎ (UTC)

If you mean File:MUDAM, Luxembourg-Kirchberg, LU.jpg, then I do not see any warnings about problems. That said, works of architecture are creative works that are eligible for copyright protection, just like sculptures or paintings. Unless there's a legal exemption such as freedom of panorama, distributing and licensing photos that depict such works requires permission from the copyright holder of the depicted work – typically the architect in the case of buildings. Unfortunately, Luxembourg has no freedom of panorama exemption. LX (talk, contribs) 09:52, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

reusing a Wikimedia commons image

Dear Sir or Madam,

I'm curating a mini-exhibition on Children under Hitler and would like to reuse a photo made of a Kindertransport memorial in Berlin. The pic seems to have been taken by "Beek100", but I can't seem to contact him to ask him for his permission to reuse this image for the planned exhibition:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Berlin,_Mitte,_Dorothea-Schlegel-Platz,_Denkmal_Z%C3%BCge_in_das_Leben,_Z%C3%BCge_in_den_Tod_1938-1945.jpg

I have also found this image on "secrettravelocity.com", so I'm unsure who the creator is.

The exhibition will be on show for one week at the end of January 2016, in the city library in Newcastle upon Tyne, as part of the city council's HMD activities.

Please advise and help.

Many thanks!

  • Ah. Welcome. You do great work! Since you've previously published this (and other similar work) elsewhere on the web, we need you to clarify that User:Diatom.phage is your account. What I'd suggest as the simplest way to do this is to indicate on your site http://www.mudstonephoto.com that your WMF account is User:Diatom.phage. If you don't want to do that, you can clarify the matter with email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, sending an email from mudstonephoto@gmail.com, indicating who you are and stating that your WMF account is User:Diatom.phage (see COM:OTRS for more discussion). Or you can do both. The only problem with the permissions-commons approach is that the volunteers that handle that incoming email are terribly backlogged right now, and it will literally take a couple of months before they get to your email. If you take the first approach (a note on your own site) that can be handled more or less immediately, and you then request undeletion of these two photos at Commons:Undeletion requests. - Jmabel ! talk 20:51, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

Claim of ownership to photo rights - by the person in the portrait

I've got a portrait photo of a living person that I'd like to upload to a wiki article that was written about this person.

I received the photo from the person himself (as a jpg file without embedded copyright info).

This person (who is shown in the portait and who gave me the photo) says that:

  • The photo was taken by a company he worked in (in the past)
  • The company gave him the photo when he left the company, with no restrictions on its use
  • The person now offers free use of the photo, with no copyright or other restrictions.

Can I assume that this person's statement is sufficient to establish that the photo is free of all copyright restrictions? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joe Weisman (talk • contribs) 10:00, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

No, it is not sufficient. The copyright probably belongs to the company, whose explicit permission is necessary. Ruslik (talk) 12:01, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

Upload a Flag

There is a flag i want to upload from a town to put on Wikipedia Commons and it's wikipedia article, but i don't know what the copyright situation would be on a flag of a small town? Thanks. --Tyanc13and7 talk 15:07, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Tettens.jpg

  • Probably not OK. The drawing is presumably recent, hence copyrighted, even though the blazon may be old. Probably it would be OK to upload your own image based on the blazon. - Jmabel ! talk 17:01, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
