Category:Theater of Portugal

For some reason. Category:Theater of Portugal has one file in it, and I can't seem to find why.The file is File:D. Maria, A Louca.jpg. It's now been moved, but the redirect is still in that category. Even after blanking it and null-editing the category page, it remained. I'm leaning toward a software bug of some kind, but wanted to see if anyone else had any ideas on why this is stuck. sısɐuuǝɔıʌ∀ (diskuto) 02:02, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

Possible to spin off image version into a separate file?

In this image, the uploader has replaced the original file with a cropped version. While I could manually fix this by saving and uploading a separate file, is it possible to "spin off" the cropped version into a separate file and automatically add derivative tags etc.?--̴̴̴Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 14:08, 6 September 2015 (UTC) (please ping me in your reply)

@Cpt.a.haddock: Nothing automatic; I'd recommend you save the cropped version & upload as a separate file (probably linking with {{Image extracted}}, {{Extracted from}}), then revert this to its original. - Jmabel ! talk 17:29, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

Cropped version

I uploaded a cropped version for this image. But, when I used it, it was like being compressed in height. What should be done? Mhhossein (talk) 14:17, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

  • Looks fine to me. Have you cleared your cache? - Jmabel ! talk 16:27, 28 August 2015 (UTC)
  • By the way, I would suggest that when doing such a radical crop of someone else's photo you should upload under a different name and connect via "other versions". - 16:28, 28 August 2015 (UTC)
Jmabel:Minor changes don't need overwrite per CROP. Mhhossein (talk) 12:34, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
I don't think that's a minor change. - Jmabel ! talk 15:14, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
Jmabel: Just compare it with the original version. Mhhossein (talk) 07:07, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
Jmabel: Just excessive parts are cropped. the percentage is not important, sometimes a small cropping removes important elements. Any way, is there any way to separate it? Mhhossein (talk) 14:12, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
@ColonialGrid: You could upload it under the different name, revert the original, then link with {{Image derived}} on the original and {{Derived from}} on the new one. In this case, probably not worth the trouble. But in the future I'd suggest you do it as a separate image.
FWIW, I agree that you removed only "excess", but depending on how it is/was used, the major change in aspect ratio could matter. - Jmabel ! talk 16:38, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
I'm not concerned enough to revert the crop, and generally agree with you, but think that in future Mhhossein should upload crops as new files. ColonialGrid (talk) 17:16, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

Twinkle?

Hi, I'm less experienced at Commons, I want to know that is there twinkle option at Commons to use? I saw gadgets in my "preferences" but didn't find any twinkle option to activate. I want such kind of tool to nominate any pic for deletion or welcoming or notifying any user etc. Thank you. --Human3015 (talk) 20:29, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

For nominating files for deletion, you should enable the AjaxQuickDelete and Quick Delete gadgets. You could also install VisualFileChange.js, which is handy for batch nominations. Welcoming new users is done automatically by a bot, User:Wikimedia Commons Welcome, but the User Messages gadget is useful for adding other notifications. My gallery

If I go to the talk page of a new user, there is usually a welcome message at the top, including the words "All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery". When I click on the word "gallery", I get to see my own gallery. But when I go to my own talk page, which still has the welcome message at the top, and click on "gallery", my browser tries to connect to http://tools.wikimedia.de/~daniel/WikiSense/Gallery.php?&wikifam=commons.wikimedia.org&img_user_text=Maproom and times out.

Ok, I've fixed the problem, by deleting all the template-y stuff from the top of my talk page and issuing myself a new "welcome" message. I wish I'd figured that out years ago, I've spent about three years not knowing how to access my own gallery. Maybe this will be useful to someone else. Maproom (talk) 11:04, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

  • There is also a link "Uploads" in the top right hand side of the screen which shows all your uploads. If you are viewing the "User contributions" "Special page", "User page", or "Discussion"/"User talk" of another editor there is an "User uploads" link the in the "Tools" section of the menu on the left hand side of the screen that will list all of that users uploads. Help Me

Im trying to edit my user page but it does not work.I can only edit certain pages.Another problem is that I am logged in but when I try to make a sandbox it says im logged out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 197.79.11.207 (talk • contribs) 14:58, 2 September 2015‎ (UTC)

Well, the fact that the edit history lists an IP address and not a user name for this entry means that you are in fact not logged in. That is most likely why your editing capabilities are limited as well. LX (talk, contribs) 16:31, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Custom drop-down license

The licenses included in the drop-down menu of the upload form are detailed in MediaWiki:Licenses. Those have been selected as the most useful and user-friendly ones for most users. And yet, one thing is "most users" and another thing is a specific user. For example, a regular user would be aware that he needs to check the origin of a photo and the appropiate license before uploading, and would never select "I don't know what the license is" or "I found the image on Google or a random website" (because he would either find the appropiate license for the image, or drop the whole idea before uploading it). A user that works at certain areas may have specific licenses that he uses on a regular basis, and others that he never uses (for example, preferring a certain license for self made photos, and ignoring the others).

Is it possible to create a custom form that would only work for the specific user, leaving the general one for all the others? Cambalachero (talk) 18:12, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

  • Assuming the page you are talking about is Special:Upload (there are several other ways to upload) I suggest that as an experienced user you just ignore the dropdown and insert the license template directly, just like any other text. That's certainly what I do. - Jmabel ! talk 20:57, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Innecessary removement of images

Jewish Museum in Prague, an institution where I volunteer, uploaded to Wikicommons few months ago considerable amount of images, unfortunately without adducing properly, that the Museum is itself the autor and that these photographs had been published on its official website, to be used freely by anyone, under single condition, that the author is acknowleged (see the website:Images to be downloaded from Jewish Museum in Prague. The files has been removed, although they are acctualy "legal". Could the removement be revoked? Here is a list of images concerned:

— Preceding unsigned comment added by ‎MitnadevetJMP (talk • contribs)

@MitnadevetJMP: from a crude google translation of the copyright page, it says "They are designed for direct promotion of the Jewish Museum in Prague (articles, reports, etc.), If their use must be Jewish Museum in Prague listed as the holder of the rights to the images." While this does sound like a {{Attribution}} licence, it would be best if your institution could get in contact with our OTRS Team by email. This gives us a paper trail that the museum are happy to release the images freely, and the OTRS team will ensure the permission given explicitly acknowledges that the images can be used for commercial or derivative purposes. -mattbuck (Talk) 11:33, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Adding photographs to an edit

After editing an entry, I uploaded images to the Commons. I want to include them with the edit, however when I follow the insert procedure nothing happens. The images add significant content and enhance the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clarence Dumais (talk • contribs) 12:24, 5 September 2015‎ (UTC)

This is more of a Wikipedia issue than a Commons issue, but I fixed the syntax on en:Lekander Nunatak. You don't need <gallery> tags when you're just including a single image, and if you use <gallery> tags, you shouldn't include the square brackets. See en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial for more info. (Bot?) Upload of a document

I'm not sure where best to ask, but is there any way that a bot could upload the content of the 25 pages of The Modern Multi-Floor Garage, With Particular Reference to d'Humy Motoramps for Interfloor Travel (1929, {{PD-US-not renewed}}) that can be found online at http://digital.hagley.org/cdm/ref/collection/p268001coll12/id/763? Picture uploaded wrong

Hello! I uploaded my picture in a wrong section. I want to delete this picture and to reupload it to Wiki Loves Monuments. How can I do this ? This is my picture: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rasnov_Citadel.jpg

I don’t think there’s any need to upload it again; just edit the file page to add the WLM template, monument ID, and appropriate categories to be included in the contest. Use any similar file that was uploaded through the contest wizard as an example. I believe it’s one of those categories that enters the image in the contest, not the act of uploading through the wizard.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:01, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

Translation issues

Hello

I am working on Commons:WLA and have two issues

  1. I have moved the main page of WLAf2014 to Commons:Wiki Loves Africa 2014. But the translations in various languages are still "attached" to the original page Commons:Wiki Loves Africa. How to "move" the translations so that they stay with the original page ?
  2. Last year, when I needed a translator wizard hand, I asked one translator admin on his talk page. But sometimes it took a while before he could do it, depending on his own availability. I thought there might be a page where I can ask translation admins help on that matter, but it is unclear to me where I can do so. Commons:Translation administrators is not very helpful on this matter and the only talk page is basically empty and has been marked for deletion. So I guess it is not the right place to do so. Where can I ask help in a "central" place ?

  • Convenience link: File:Salihoğlu Muzaffer Bey.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 16:22, 8 September 2015 (UTC)
  • You state it is your own work and release it using the {{Self}} template. Does that mean you are the photographer? If not, then that is false, and you need to say who actually took the picture.
  • You say, via that {{Self}} template, that you are issuing a license. Assuming (from your description of this as an old photo in an album) that you are not the photographer, how do you come to own the copyright and be able to release those rights? Are you the legal heir to those rights? If so, say so, and you can then presumably release as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}.
  • On the other hand, if the photographer is still alive, you need the photographer's permission. See COM:OTRS about how to pass that along. - Jmabel ! talk 16:29, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

Delete/update images. Help!

Hi. I would like to delete some images in the gallery about Dark Arkitekter and replace them with updated versions (real images instead of renderings), and I cant seem to understad how this is done. In total five images that needs an update. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dark ark web (talk • contribs) 07:33, 9 September 2015‎ (UTC)

Under File History you will find "Upload a new version of this file". You can't upload a file under the same name, so you use oldname_a.jpg or something like that. With that you will upload a new file replacing the old one. But if the new file is substantially different from the old one, it may be necessary to upload it under a new name. Wereldburger758 (talk) 09:07, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
@Dark ark web: I believe (1) either you are using the word gallery incorrectly or are talking about somewhere in Commons, because there is no gallery page Dark Arkitekter here.

I disagree with Wereldburger758's advice here. If the images in question are not simply minor technical improvements on the old images, do not upload them to the same filenames, which overwrites the old images for which you have already granted an irrevocable license. You do not have the prerogative to unilaterally delete your older images. Instead, upload under new names. You can link images via "other versions" or via the description, as appropriate.

If there is a gallery somewhere outside of Commons that you need to update, then update the gallery by replacing the names of images there, on the page that includes a gallery. - Jmabel ! talk 16:07, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Hello, I work for The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution. I noticed an image from one of our objects is on Wikimedia Commons. This is a great! And we're happy it is being used. Is it possible, though, to make note that it is from The Freer Gallery of Art? Hello,

I recently created a page on Wikipedia entitled, “Northwestern Alumni Association.” I am writing in regards to a question that I have about the copyright of the logo I uploaded onto the page (seen in the Commons). I work for Northwestern University, who the logo belongs to. I have been given permission by Northwestern’s Alumni Relations and Development Marketing and Communications team to put the logo on Wikipedia if utilized under the same guidelines as what was done for the Northwestern seal on the Northwestern University Wikipedia page. Do you have any guidance on how this might be possible? I did not see an option for this process when utilizing Wikipedia Commons.

Edit: Essentially, I'm hoping to get approval for the Non-free school logo licensing on Wikipedia, similar to what the Northwestern University seal was able to achieve. Can someone help me with this?

Thanks!

--Mandaasaur (talk) 17:41, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

  • This particular logo is trademarked, but is too simple to be eligible for copyright, so it can stay here on Commons. Commons allows non-copyright restrictions like that. For anything that is copyrighted and not free-licensed, though, you have to upload it to the individual Wikipedia (in this case, the English-language Wikipedia) and follow its guidelines. Some Wikipedias (e.g. German) don't allow non-free images at all. - Jmabel ! talk 20:55, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Martindennygroup.png

This photo was taken from the back of the album "Exotica Vol. III" by Martin Denny, which seems to provide no credit or copyright information for it. Can it still be used and how?

--Nelson Novak (talk) 21:32, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

I see that you've recently uploaded two versions of this photo: File:Martindenny.jpg and File:Martindennygroup.png. I found a scan of the rear of the album in a blog post (larger image). In the fine print the photo is credited to "Garrett-Howard". Garrett-Howard was a photographic studio formed by Murray Garrett (still iiving) and Gene Howard (d. 1993). It's possible that this photo qualifies for {{PD-US-no notice}} or {{PD-US-not renewed}}, but I haven't personally checked a copy of the album for a copyright notice or the copyright renewal records. Liberty Records of Hollywood was usually pretty good about its copyright details and Murray Garret is a pretty famous photographer in his own right, so there is a better than average chance that this photo did not become PD due to failure to comply with copyright formalities. Unless there was no copyright notice anywhere on the album (if I recall correctly, Liberty sometimes put its notice on the inside) or the copyright was not renewed the photo you uploaded will be protected by copyright until January 1, 2055 (1959 + 95 + 1). —RP88 (talk) 00:41, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

You can email them and reference (or attach) the earlier email; I can't promise they'll pay attention (same backlog applies as to any other email), but I don't see another way to move this forward. In short you should find some active admin (see Commons:Administrators or Commons:List of administrators by language) and ask them personally to do a revision deletion. That's probably all I can say on this subject, as I'm not an admin and never needed the procedure myself. --CiaPan (talk) 19:31, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
Domenjod, I don't see any reason to delete the intermediate revisions.  Not done -mattbuck (Talk) 20:47, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
I don't see any reason to delete those. It doesn't save server space (we still physically keep them). In general, just like edits to text, we save every intermediate version as part of the public history of a page, unless there are issues like rights problems, libel, etc. - Jmabel ! talk 20:48, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
Jmabel mattbuck. Thanks for taking the time to answer. I understand your points. My concern is : why keep an intermediate version which was a (poor) attempt at editing a picture when the final version is (hopefully) much better ? In my view, the intermediate versions are unnecessary and are not worth keeping (and also, my first botched attempts at playing with Photoshop don't deserve to remain public - a matter of (misplaced?) pride ;<)). Kind regards, --Domenjod (talk) 05:09, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
@Domenjod: I understand the pride issue, however we do not use revision deletion for such purposes. From Commons:Revision deletion: "Please note that revision deletion is used sparingly and is not (for example) used to hide the fact that there were several unsuccessful attempts at uploading variants of an image, or that there has been some back-and-forth over which of two versions of an image to use." Just as on wikipedia you don't delete a revision because of a spelling mistake, we won't delete the old versions here. -mattbuck (Talk) 07:15, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
mattbuck. OK. Thanks for your time anyway. Kind regards, --Domenjod (talk) 20:23, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

@TheMightyTed23: Commons does not allow images you found on the internet unless they are explicitly released under a free licence. I have deleted that image as a copyright violation. The other one is ok to keep on wikipedia because English Wikipedia allows limited non-free content under "fair use". -mattbuck (Talk) 20:46, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

Images giving errors

Trying to test linking here... interesting, the image manifests here as a thumb...

Many images giving error when attempting to access File page (see the image). These seem to be all the titles beginning with "'Weisser Strand' am ..." such as file:'Weisser Strand' am Flakensee in Woltersdorf Juni 2014 - 01.JPG. The error message I'm seeing is:

"The page isn't redirecting properly

Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies."

(more or less). I have no idea what this means, but I clicked on over a dozen such images in the category trying to figure it out. Now you can scratch your head in puzzlement too!

"gallery" pages

Greetings!

I am working on pages for an upcoming event. Basically, two campuses of my university are doing Wiki expeditions in different parts of Mexico City and I need to created info pages for students.

I started it at Reto_Wikimedia_Semana_i_Fall_2015 originally with information for the Ciudad de México campus. So far so good. When I added a gallery of images to the top of the page, the page itself got called a "gallery." But I did nothing because the page worked the same. Today I decided to use that page is a "disambiguagion" page, with subpages for the two campuses. I created subpages, but they dont work as subpages. When Im on /Reto_Wikimedia_Semana_i_Fall_2015_Campus_Ciudad_de_México (<-- doesnt work link) it works as a completely separate page, not a subpage, with the / as part of the name. Im guessing the status of the pages as "galleries" is causing this. Can anyone help? Thelmadatter (talk) 14:53, 7 September 2015 (UTC)

  1. "disambiguagion" => "disambiguation"
  2. In general, subpages are discouraged, I recommend you go a different way with your naming. Just name the page Reto Wikimedia Semana i Fall 2015 Campus Ciudad de México, or some such. (By the way 'i'? Is that meant to be English "in"? Spanish "y"?)
  3. The link you give here doesn't work because of course it would be to a subpage of this Help desk page, which isn't at all what you want.
  4. When in doubt, you can always write the link (to an empty page) first, then create the page where the link takes you.
  5. "Gallery page" is just another term for the pages in the main namespace on Commons, because they mainly should be galleries of images, whether they use the "gallery" element or not.
I hope that addresses your various issues, though I might have missed something, in which case feel free to ask more specific questions. - Jmabel ! talk 17:04, 7 September 2015 (UTC)
thanks for answering. I did not know subpages were discouraged, but as the two campuses are doing related project for the same overall reason (Semana i (i Week)... the "i" stand for innovation and a bunch of other words that start with the letter in Spanish), I thought subpages were the best way to go. I did not name the pages "gallery," that happened automatically when I put the small gallery of photos at the top of the page. I did create the sub pages in the way the you described, but they are not subpages, but pages with names that start with a slash.Thelmadatter (talk) 17:58, 7 September 2015 (UTC)
Normal page names can't start with a forward slash. That is exactly how we indicate subpages and, as I said, subpages are generally discouraged. - Jmabel ! talk 02:42, 8 September 2015 (UTC)
Jmabel, subpages are created as "page/subpage"; subpage must start with the main page name followed by slash. Subpages should not begin with /.
However, I believe that for primary namespace (gallery pages in Commons) subpages are disabled entirely and will be treated as separate pages. MKFI (talk) 06:56, 8 September 2015 (UTC)
In a link, starting with a slash means "subpage of the present page". - Jmabel ! talk 16:30, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

I make categories on Wikiversity all the time, but became aware that you do things differently here. The category I created is category:Bell's theorem. My guess is that you want to somehow associate it with category:Optics. Note the dual link at w:Bell's theorem#External links--Guy vandegrift (talk) 23:02, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

That is a good place. I am going to experiment and put Category:Optics into Category:Bell's theorem and then revert. try to use google image search or TinEye, Commons images are indexed eagerly at least by google image search. If you have found the image on commons, you are already done. Image on Marathi Wikipedia

Hi, I found this image of a dam on Marathi language Wikipedia. I want to use this image in one dam related article on English Wikipedia. But this image is not on Commons. How I can move this image to Commons? This image is not copyright protected, it is clicked by the uploader and it has proper metadata. Uploader is not active since 8 months. If anyone has any problem in reading Marathi language info on that image then you can ask it because I have knowledge of Marathi language. Thank you. --Human3015 (talk) 03:39, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

  • I can't read Marathi either, and that has no machine-readable license. So unless an admin who reads Marathi can sort this out, you'll need to sort out the licensing first. - Jmabel ! talk 16:06, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
    • There is no license on the upload so it wouldn't be compatible here. While there's no reason to doubt the uploader would have released it under an appropriate license, COM:PCP would apply here. This is a standard problem with most of the Indic wikipedias as they don't police for license tags and it becomes very difficult to move to Commons. The only option here is to email the uploader and ask them to add a CC-By-SA license tag or release it to PD and see if they respond. —SpacemanSpiff 17:22, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

  • This is really a Wikipedia question, not a Commons question, because you are talking about a non-free image, but I'll do my best to answer anyway. I'm assuming you are talking about the English-langage Wikipedia. You can upload the image at en:Special:Upload. Because it is non-free, make sure you use the lowest resolution that suits the purpose. When you upload, use (and fill out) en:Template:Non-free use rationale to explain why you are using a non-free image. Then place it in the article just like any other image. See en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial if you need more information, and you'd probably do best to ask any follow-up questions at en:Wikipedia:Help desk instead of here at Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 17:49, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

Commons stores works for Wikipedias, and while en.WP still has local uploads, that doesn't mean we shouldn't hold their free works just like anyone else. Batch uploads of original images

I have many small batches of original content (over 5,000 images, including a few uncommon locations such as Kangerlussuaq, Greenland) that I would like to upload to Wikimedia Commons. I am asking for some guidance on what types of images should be uploaded, and what types are not of interest. A few questions:

  • Should I add additional images to popular categories, or select only my images that are unique? An example: I have about a dozen images of Mount St. Helens taken during the activity of October of 2004. The category "Mount St. Helens in 2004" only had about 10 images in it, so I would assume that my images would provide a meaningful addition. However, I also have images of popular tourist destinations, where perhaps my images do not provide additional context.
  • When uploading images, should I error towards adding many images, or selecting a few that I feel are meaningful? For example, if I have several shots of a topic from a slightly different angle, should I pick one to upload, or upload 6 or 10 similar images?
  • Some images may not be "good" in the sense that they are not high qualify photos; they may have grain, the horizon may be slanted, the composition may not be well done, etc. Are images such as these useful, regardless? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jmkdouglas (talk • contribs) 22:22, 20 September 2015‎ (UTC)
  • In terms of whether you should add additional images to popular categories: mainly, it's a matter of whether we already have a very similar image. If we do, then it would be pointless to add. However, if your image is significantly different, then it doesn't matter how many are in the same category.
  • In terms of multiple images: there's almost never a problem with adding too many, as long as you don't take offense if some might be deleted as being too similar to be of interest. If you are sure that one of them is significantly better than another, then of course don't add the inferior image unless it provides significant additional information (e.g. showing details that are not shown in some other photo we've got). See, for example, Category:Christ Church Cathedral (Victoria, British Columbia) and its subcategories for an example of a building that has a hundred or so photos, almost none of them interchangeable, but could certainly use more.
  • Images can be useful without being high quality. It's really a judgment call. If you think someone might have a valid educational use for the image, then upload it; if not, not. Jmabel ! talk 04:18, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

It's not in the public domain, perhaps? Harry Sternberg died in 2001, so the painting is copyrighted until after 31 December 2071 (70 years from the end of the year in which the artist died). — SMUconlaw (talk) 19:01, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
If he did it as a WPA employee, it was PD from creation as a work of the U.S. government. If he did it in that era without explicitly marking it as copyrighted and renewing the copyright 28 years later, it would now be PD. Malcolm, I suspect the other people responding here don't know much of the relevant copyright law, and I'm not expert myself, so you might want to re-ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 20:02, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

Those 'wrong' thumbnails possibly 'started to work' just because they have been purged, either manually (see Help:Purge) or by some regular automatic maintenance. --CiaPan (talk) 09:08, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

✓ Done Repairing took a few days. Was probably done manually. Now it's ok. --Thomas Ledl (talk) 17:35, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Copyright help

Hi, everyone! I've noticed there's a significant lack of images of Peruvian art and artist and I would like to change that uploading some files. I have found many in an academic Journal which is published under Creative Commons Reconocimiento-NoComercial-SinObraDerivada 4.0 Internacional License, does this fit into Wikimedia Commons policies? Thank you so much for your help. Regards from Peru. Yhhue91 (talk) 21:14, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

No. Please read Commons:Project scope/Summary#Must be freely licensed or public domain. LX (talk, contribs) 10:36, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Ik heb een oud PDF bestand (scan uit hs. Woutersz 16de eeuw) omgezet naar JPEG. Haagschebluf (talk) 10:08, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Wolfgang Weidner.jpg

Hallo liebes Help-Desk-Team,

All I was trying to do is eliminate that photo on my page that someone posted without my permission. It's wrong and misleading

All I was trying to do is eliminate that photo on my page that someone posted without my permission. It's wrong and misleading and now I can't do anything — Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.170.55.147 (talk • contribs) 15:59, 24 September 2015‎ (UTC)

You'll have to be a bit more specific: Which photo did you try to eliminate from where and how did you do that? --El Grafo (talk) 16:07, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

I would like to use the logo of the UN Sustainable Development Goals on wikipedia pages, but am not clear whether this meets their license or wiki policies. Can someone have a look at the information on their website: here and help me upload the logos it is allowed? Thanks JMWt (talk) 17:09, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

Those terms are completely and utterly non-free for a long list of reasons (the content may not be modified, may only be used in specific enumerated contexts, may not be used in several enumerated contexts, and may not be used commercially). If the logotype in question is eligible for copyright protection, it cannot be hosted on Commons. If, however, it is below the threshold of originality in the relevant jurisdiction(s), it may be uploaded and tagged with {{PD-textlogo}}. LX (talk, contribs) 18:16, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

Will my real name be displayed?

Hello, I'm going to enter a number of images for the Wiki Loves Monuments photo competition. I've registered under the Username 'Oidhre'. However, I would like my real name to be shown with the images. Will my real name be visible or will it just be my user name?

Many thanks.

KInd Regards.

Sean, you will be attributed however you want. The easiest way is to modify your signature - go to Special:Preferences, and in the signature box put in your preferred name (eg "Seán Ó Domhnaill"). Then, whenever you sign your name ~~~~, it will use the name you put in. When you upload a file, it should also use that name. On the subject of signing, please remember to sign your name with four tildes on talk pages and help pages (like this) so we know who was writing! -mattbuck (Talk) 10:08, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
For each image, in the {{Self}} template, assuming you are using that for your attribution, you can add author=[[User:Oidhre|Seán Ó Domhnaill]]. - Jmabel ! talk 15:59, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

Bulk download of images from list

Hi.

Sorry, new to this and not sure where else to ask. I have searched the FAQ, archive, general internet and extensions, but cannot find a clear and simple solution.

I would like to download a list of images directly.

To explain why, I am trying to set up a working copy of Wikipedia in order to learn how it works and how to administrate it. For example, I have most elements working, including various templates and portals, but am missing all the graphic icons for them.

Special pages offer a list of missing images (Special:WantedFiles).

I was wonder how it would be possible just to take the list generated, and use it to download them directly and automatically. Ditto for a few categories of topics. I appreciate that some might be here and some over at Wikipedia. Don't want to make a book or a PDF.

I have read some really complex articles about downloading dumps from mirrors, setting up environments and and using command lines to extract images but it seem overkill for what I'm after.

Thanks. --Wordfunk (talk) 07:26, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

I looked at both. Everywhere. Strange something so apparently simple is so difficult when you can make a pdf book at a click.
See here: "stackoverflow.com/questions/12500021/download-images-with-mediawiki-api - "No, it is not possible to get the images via the API. Images in a MediaWiki are stored just in folders, not in a database and are not delivered dynamically".
Unfortunately Imker batch download set up for Windows only (I don't do it), and I cannot run Java 1.7 natively (though I am trying to set it up).
Special pages spits out a list of missing files. Ideally it'd be nice to just be able to export them in the same way you can pages or templates. It appears to be a missing element. I wonder it it has been considered?
Is all images on Wikipedia mirrored to Wikimedia Commons?
--Wordfunk (talk) 18:34, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
Ah, OK, it seems it's a known issue, see: here.

"This has the potential to make moving data from project to project, and even having a standard import/export with default data much easier. Right now setting up and or importing templates/articles and similar are very time consuming as you have to track down every image that is being used and manually move that to the new project. This would also make moving data to and from commons much easier and enable maintaining attribution without having to jump through hoops".
That's exactly what I am talking about so it seems the answer is no. You've got to sit and move 100s of them individually by hand. --Wordfunk (talk) 20:33, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
