Light on the move photo challenge

aloha I am new to wikimedia commons just uploading my first batch of images yet in the process of "inserting" onto the challenge page--I messed up and am now worried I did so to the extent others can't enter. Please advise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Big Island Photography (talk • contribs) 21:53, 31 October 2014‎ (UTC)

@HelenOnline and Colin: Could you help here? -- Rillke(q?) 23:39, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
Hello and welcome, Don't panic, there's nothing that can't be fixed (at least, when it's done by normal users). Many new users could do the same mistake. The instruction line is somewhat ambiguous, as it includes a file titled "-Insert image here-". So, naturally, users can easily read that as part of the instruction, telling them exactly to, well, insert the image there, when actually the image is not to be inserted there. You had it almost right, anyway. Just give your image its own separate line in the edit box and add a short description after a pipe (|). Your re-entry may be past the deadline, but your first attempt is in the page history, so I guess it should be ok, although I don't know if the people who run that challenge are strict or not about that. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:26, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
@Big Island Photography: I see you removed your entry and the instruction line was later restored. I have readded your entry in the position where you originally added it. HelenOnline 05:43, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Two years ago I uploaded this file, but seing its low quality I tried to improve it and uploaded another one, but I didn't understand it wasn't a vectorial image, so I wouldn't improve it. Now I think we should delete the second one or upload the second one as a new version of the first one (because the content is the same). What do you think? --Tn4196 (debates) 19:32, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

@Tn4196: To be blunt, neither is high quality but for entirely different reasons. The GIF is only low quality because of its resolution, ie the number of pixels being used to describe the image, Whereas the JPG is low quality simply because it's a JPG and is an inappropriate compression method for that sort of image. In fact the GIF is a better compression method than JPG for that sort of image, although PNG or SVG are better than either GIF or JPG. So to answer your question, you'd be better off uploading a third new image that is higher resolution in either PNG or SVG format (preferably the latter as that would be an actual vector image) and then requesting the other two be deleted. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 20:05, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
The problem is that I've not found the original file on my computer, so what should I do? Do I download one of the files and reupload it in SVG? Or do I move the links to JPG one to the GIF one and delete just the second one? --Tn4196 (debates) 12:21, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
I can't tell you what you should do, but I can say what I would do in the same circumstance. I would find an appropriate SVG locator map and recreate the graphic in vector form, upload that then put in a deletion request for the other two. You, however, are free to do whatever you feel like doing, even if that's just leaving things as they are. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 12:57, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
I endly decided to delete the first one and keep the second one, that is a bit better. --Tn4196 (debates) 17:26, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

According to its website, the United States Institute of Peace was "established by Congress in 1984 as an independent, federally-funded national security institution devoted to the nonviolent prevention and mitigation of deadly conflict abroad." I'm wondering if images by the USIP are considered public domain. The organization is federally funded, but its domain is .org, not .gov, presumably because it's considered a think tank. (although some federally-funded institutions like the Smithsonian don't have a .gov domain either and they're classified as public domain) AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 23:11, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

I would have thought so. The best thing to do is to ask them at http://www.usip.org/contact. -- (talk) 23:48, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. I'll try contacting them. USIP's flickr stream is a mixture of CC BY-NC 2.0, CC BY-SA 2.0, and all rights reserved. That's another reason I was confused. AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 04:39, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

How to create a gallery of your own pictures on your user page ?

I could find the answer myself. Could anybody point me in the right direction, how to create a gallery on my user page automatically?

  • I'm not sure I understand what you want to do (which may be why no one has given you a quick answer). Have every photo you take appear on your user page (effectively duplicating your uploads page)? Or something else?? - Jmabel ! talk 17:58, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

Kingswood College badge

PLEASE help me to REMOVE our school crest for Kingswood College (South Africa) as is is an old, incorrect one, and people keep downloading it off Wikipedia and using it!! I don't have a problem with it being used, but I want the correct one to be used. We are trying to eradicate the old one, but it keeps popping up everywhere because people seem to access it on Wiki!! I am struggling to load the new version, and don't know how to delete the old one (complete Wiki-rookie!!). Please can you help me with this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smutsd (talk • contribs) Revision as of 07:05, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

I have nominated File:Kingswood College Crest.jpg for deletion as Commons is not supposed to host non-free images. I can upload a new one directly to Wikipedia with a fair use licence but the one on the school's website looks the same to me. HelenOnline 10:33, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

Untitled

Hi Editing Commons Help Desk. I have created an entry for a now deceased person (World War I veteran). I have a photo of that person, and as far as I can ascertain the family have copyright on that photo. The family is willing to provide the photograph to Wikimedia commons. Am I permitted to add the photo to commons and link it to the entry? — Preceding unsigned comment added by James Culham (talk • contribs) 09:21, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

@James Culham: You may do so provided you submit permission from the copyright owner as explained in Commons:OTRS. HelenOnline 11:23, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

uploading images

I'm trying to upload an image. I typed in a description and the time/date created. But it comes back and says I have to add a description in another language. What gives? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alex1jas (talk • contribs) 18:32, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

That does not sound like a known problem on Commons. However, it sounds like something that might happen on a language-specific site. Are you sure you were trying to upload the file to Commons? If so, it could be useful if you could describe the problem in more detail. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:05, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
I had been adding other language descriptions after upload, by editing the description, but now there is a link for "Add a description in another language", which if clicked will each time clicked open up another language/description box, but there is no requirement to use the link. I think adding that link to the interface is relatively new, say in the last year. Delphi234 (talk) 18:41, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

How to remove old version of my uploads list ?

I wonder if someone could tell me if it's possible to hide old version of my photos on my uploads list (when I have uploaded a edited version of the same photo). I have looked at the preferences, but didn't find anything. I have tried "Include old versions of images" on the upload list itself, but it will not stick when I log in again. I need a more permanent solution.--Ezzex (talk) 15:16, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Various links to Special:ListFiles are with or without the "showall" option as default, depending from where you click them. One way to get the version you want is to go to your user contributions page and click on the "uploads" link in the upper left corner (not the other "Uploads" link in the upper right corner and not the "User uploads" link in the sidebar). You can also place a link to Special:ListFiles/Ezzex in other places where you can access it easily, for example on your user page. Or type it in the search box. And even get to it directly from any other Wikimedia website by typing C:Special:ListFiles/Ezzex. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:00, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the advices, but I wish there would be a more permanent version which I could store in preferences. Maybe someone with good technological knowledge about wikipedia could make this an option in preferences. If so, you could (for example) switch this option of, but at the same time have a small notice on the picture that informs you that there is an other versions of that same photo.--Ezzex (talk) 18:30, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
It is permanent. The only important thing is how you access it. Basically, you want to access the list without adding the "showall" option. I have become used to access it from the upper left link "uploads" in my contributions page and that method seems natural to me. From any page on Commons, it only takes two clicks. If your problem is that you want to access it with only a single click (instead of two) directly from almost any page as well, there are ways to configure that too. There would seem to be no particular point in insisting on having the link specifically in the upper right corner where the other link is currently displayed (although there may be a way to configure your interface to position it there if you really insist) or through the preferences. Would having the link in your sidebar be good enough for you? If so, then you can copy-paste the text of this page to your page "User:Ezzex/common.js". I took this solution from the mediawiki page mw:Manual:Interface/Sidebar. I tested it and adapted it for you and it works fine for me. It should do what you want. As a bonus, this will allow you to customize your sidebar with other additions or removals if you want, by adding other lines to your page. See the mediawiki page for examples. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:25, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Difficulty locating photos by category

Greetings,

I'm new here and have spent hours covering the Commons categories trying to narrow down how to find an image. But the categories are too vague for my purpose. I write satirical pieces and am looking for images that would be appropriate. The problem is trying to locate an image of "idiot" or "liberals" or similar brings up tons of documents and some photos but nothing that will work for me. Is there a way to narrow down the scope of my search some how. I've read through pages of Help files but didn't find anything to help answer my question. Can you help with this? - unsigned — Preceding unsigned comment added by NigelCovington85 (talk • contribs)

  • Since the categorizations here are intended to be based on neutrality and objectivity, you won't find anything in particular by searching for "idiot liberals", just as you won't find anything in particular for "trolling asshat." - Jmabel ! talk 00:16, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Uploading on behalf of someone else: Three cases

Great Knowers of the Commons Help Desk, I seek wisdom.

I have a bunch of photos that I would like to upload, but the problem is that (1) I am not the original copyright holder, and (2) they have not been previously published elsewhere. Are there any particular hoops I need to jump through before uploading these images? I offer three specific cases below, because the advice for each may be different.

  1. A while back, my brother gave me copies of all the photos that he'd taken over the years, and said that if I want to use any for Wikipedia, I could do so. He doesn't care about the legalese on his end or being credited, but I want to do the right thing by him: what do I have to show on my end to demonstrate that this is the case?
  2. My father has a much broader photographic collection, including a few shots I'd like to upload. In this case, he's happy for the photos to be uploaded, but specifically wants to be credited as the photographer. As far as I can tell, that just means rigging CC-BY-SA so that the BY identifies him, not me. How best to do this, and is there anything else I need to worry about?
  3. (the one that's finally prompted me to ask the question) A member of the public has contacted me via Commons' "Email This User" function. They are asking me to upload some images of a warship on their behalf, because they are unable or unwilling to do so themselves. I will be checking the images to make sure they are fair game, and insisting that they be uploaded to a Commons-compatible license. Any specific advice for this case (for me or the photographer)?

Thanks in advance for your help! -- saberwyn 09:42, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

In every single case, the photographer must license their work, because we care about copyright even if the copyright holder doesn't. The photographer(s) should read and understand the licensing and OTRS pages. They should send an email (from their official address where possible) to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org with a license statement based on the sample at COM:ET. They should either attach copies of every image being licensed or link to where they can be found online. They do not need to send separate emails for each of their own images; it is acceptable to list them together. Once you are 100% certain that emails have been sent, you can upload the images and fill out all the requested details including a description, a source, and most importantly the author and the license. Equally important is that you must add the {{OTRS pending}} template to every uploaded image, in the Permissions line of the Summary section or in a separate Licensing section. Please note that the OTRS template is not a license so you will need license template too. That will identify the images as being dependent on OTRS and therefore you will have 30-60 days for the OTRS emails to be dealt with. Three very important points to bear in mind:
  • The onus is on the uploader to prove that every image is licensed appropriately.
  • The OTRS system is always backlogged so patience is advised.
  • If for any reason your uploads are deleted, please do not re-upload them, or remonstrate angrily with the deleting admin. As soon as permissions are verified at OTRS, the images can easily be restored.
Please also try to categorise the images but this can be done gradually. If you are uncertain, don't hesitate to ask for help as you have done here. Green Giant (talk) 11:18, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
  • I want to clarify two things here: Green Giant, is there anywhere that it states that OTRS needs to be image-by-image? As far as I know, it is perfectly legitimate for someone to write to OTRS stating a license and either authorizing another person to upload their work in general on their behalf or describing the body of work and letting anyone upload it. For example, the latter is certainly what the City of Seattle did with their Neighborhood Atlas. - Jmabel ! talk 15:38, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Jmabel, yes it is perfectly fine if the copyright holder wants to authorise someone else to upload on their behalf. I've often done it myself when images have been licensed through OTRS. As for image-by-image, the copyright holder has to make clear which images are being licensed; some people simply make a list of files already uploaded and attach their originals, whilst others provide a link to somewhere on their own website where the images can be found. Green Giant (talk) 08:57, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the information Green Giant. I'm going to go file all this in the "too hard" basket and restrict myself to uploading my own images and previously published images with clearly identifield, commons-compatible licensing. -- saberwyn 08:03, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

Saberwyn, don't give up just because I gave a lot of information, because my intention was to help you avoid some of the problems you will encounter. Certainly it shouldn't be difficult with family members as long as they are the copyright holders. Have a look at the sample license at COM:ET and you will see how easy it is. They can just copy it and change the grey boxes with their name, date and license. Green Giant (talk) 08:57, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

Having trouble finding a past contribution

Some time ago I uploaded [2] and [3]. I am pretty sure I released the Mathematica code used to generate the one of the images as well. (I thought I did it on the file talk page, but I don't remember now). I'm trying to find that code now, but I can't find it anywhere. I'm wondering if it got deleted somehow, and if so, I'm wondering how I might go about finding it again. Any help would be appreciated. Adjwilley (talk) 17:14, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

  • All of your uploads are listed in your upload log. There only appear to be a couple of files (relating to LDS) of yours which have been deleted. Sorry, but you may be mistaken, or you may have placed the info somewhere else? If you have a rough idea of the time you added the content to Commons, going through your contributions from around that time may also be an idea (luckily you don't have tens of thousands of contributions). ColonialGrid (talk) 17:51, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, I probably thought I did it without doing it. Adjwilley (talk) 05:19, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

I can't change the heading on a photo I added

Hi, I am sorry to be such a Luddite, but I just realized the photo I thought was Benjamin Levy (My great great great grandfather) is really his son, for a variety of reasons. I feel stupid, because the photo I used--given to me by a distant relative, had the incorrect date for the man's birth already on it--I should have found a way not to add it with that mis information. Now I have the photo of the wrong person attached to a wiki I contributed to, History for the Jews in New Zealand, where I use the photo to show one of the first Jewish marriages in New Zealand.

I am better at collecting details and adding them to things than I am at learning how to edit properly or even crop photos..................forget formatting things when I edit.

mortified. eeeek. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carolynimhoff (talk • contribs)

  • When you say the "heading," I'm not certain what you mean. Do you mean the name of the image file (e.g. File:Example file name.jpg, or such) or something else? If that is what you mean, then use the {{Rename}} template, and someone with file move rights will move it. If you mean something else, I'm afraid you'll have to clarify. - Jmabel ! talk 23:57, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Also, in general, when asking for help here with a particular image, it is useful to link to the image, and to sign your post with 4 tildes (~~~~), which will be turned into a timestamped signature. - Jmabel ! talk 00:00, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

The logs of the file show that at 11:22, 14 October 2013, User:Pleclown deleted your original version. I suppose you could ask them to undelete it or you could file a request at Commons:Undeletion requests. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:50, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
As the summary says "Non-free frame revdel", it was deleted because including the frame in the photo was considered a copyright violation, so instead of it being undeleted, they or another admin would be happy to e-mail it to you, but not likely to undelete. SVG text

I am having trouble with the text in the legend box in File:2014 Ebola Outbreak Monthly Cases per day.svg. This was created using Template:SVG_Chart, which appears to be temporarily unsupported now, and then translations were added, using <switch> around each of the text items that needed to be translated. But the ones in the legend box, New cases/day and Deaths/day, looked fine in my browser, but then were miss-positioned when the file was uploaded, so to compensate I moved them. In the uploaded file they look fine, but if you click on the image to load the SVG into your browser, they are miss-positioned. The chart generation script used <tspan dy="-0.99px"/> which to me does nothing, but when it is removed the text moves. To me it needed to be <tspan dy="-0.99px">Text</tspan>. Any suggestions? Delphi234 (talk) 01:21, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Here's your problem "font-family="Helvetica, Arial". The renderer uses neither of these fonts and substitutes them with its own font, which in the case of sans-serif is "Liberation Sans". Use Liberation Sans (it's a freeware, open source font available from the web) and the text will align reasonably well in both versions. Especially if you measure the characters in px rather than pt. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 18:45, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, I was trying to remember what font we use. I tried switching to Verdana, Arial and that did not help, and so I put in the <tspan dy=xx/> which oddly sort of helped. The bizarre thing is that it is only a problem in the legend box, and only a problem when I take out the <tspan/>. I think it would be prudent to edit Template:SVG Chart so that it uses Liberation Sans, instead of Helvetica and Arial. Not very many people are using SVG Chart, but I use it a lot. Delphi234 (talk) 09:37, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
No change though. I tried Liberation Sans and the text was still misplaced. If you compare the almost identical charts File:Temporal evolution of the 2014 West African Ebola outbreak.svg which has no problems and File:2014 Ebola Outbreak Monthly Cases per day.svg, which does, it is hard to see why one is okay and the second one is not. I was able to fix it though by adding <tspan dy="-0.99px"/>. Adding that does not change how it is rendered in my browser, regardless of what font the file uses, but it mysteriously does fix it here. Delphi234 (talk) 11:00, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
As a followup, evidently something has changed in the rendering, and now pages that use <tspan (anything)/> have that ignored, and are rendered the same as they view in the browser. I still have no idea why the <tspan /> was even there, or why it affected the rendering. Delphi234 (talk) 18:29, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
And now the problem is back again. I tried leaving in the <tspan /> in File:France Wind and Solar Generation.svg but you can see that all the text was moved up that used it. So I took them all out, and that fixed everything except the legend, in the box, and to fix that, I had to put the <tspan /> statements back in. All I can say is that it makes me not want to use the Wikimedia SVG Chart generator. Delphi234 (talk) 09:01, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

deleting files

How do I delete a file that I uploaded? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Miosotis jade (talk • contribs)

  • You can't delete files you upload by yourself; deleting files require administrator tools. However, images recently uploaded, and not in use, can be deleted as a courtesy to the uploader/copyright holder. You should either list the file(s) here, or start a delete request for the image(s) that you wish to have deleted. Please keep in mind that your images may not be deleted. ColonialGrid (talk)
  • Miositis jade has added the following to my userpage:
This are the files I uploaded yesterday Nov. 5, 2014 I need them to be deleted.

These refer to File:ORMC 02.jpg and File:ORMC 01.jpg, both of which have already been deleted for being copyright violations. I think this is now resolved. ColonialGrid (talk) 06:26, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Leonard Baskin contribution

Hi, Leonard Baskin is an artist who died in 2000. I own a print of his work executed in approximately 1960. It is a woodblock print with an inscription to my father. Wikimedia has none of Baskin's prints - some of his strongest work. I would like to contribute this in a medium res image - approx 700x800 dpi. The reproduction is mine, the original artwork is mine. I do not know the copyright issues for deceased artists, especially for works that are in the collection of others. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Calebcrawford (talk • contribs) 23:56, 6 November 2014‎ (UTC)

I'm sure it would be appreciated on Commons...in about 2070 when it falls out of copyright. However I don't see any reason why a small, low resolution (approx 300px on the longest edge) couldn't be uploaded to Wikipedia (or whichever your chosen wiki is) under a Fair Use rationale. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 00:03, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
Alternatively you could try to find out who now owns the copyright to his work (usually immediate family members), and try to persuade them to release the work under a free license. Then they could send an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org with a license statement based on the one at COM:ET. Once they send the email, you could upload the image here, with the {{OTRS pending}} template on the file page. When the permission has been verified, the template can be changed by an OTRS agent. I hope you understand that Commons is a repository of freely licensed media files; anyone can use them for free, there is no money to be earned (directly) from uploading files to Commons (see: COM:SCOPE and COM:LICENSE. Could you please state in simple terms how you need help? ColonialGrid (talk) 13:39, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
My understanding of the above is that he/she is touting for business and just plainly doesn't understand what Commons is or isn't. Call it cold-calling if you will. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 13:52, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Non-free Bio Pic

I've uploaded an image (File:George Phillips, Oriental Scholar (1804-1892).jpg) and I haven't added the licensing section. It's a non-free pic from the BBC Your Pictures archive - i want to upload it using the same licensing rationale as this file (File:William Brock.jpg). Can someone help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cantab12 (talk • contribs)

If it's non-free then you shouldn't have uploaded it as that is a copyright violation. You can't just choose a license for a file you don't hold the copyright for, only the copyright holder can pick or change a license. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 13:48, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
I think it is justified as fair use for visual identification of the person in question- This is one of the only known portraits, created 1885. The subject of the photograph has been deceased since 1892 Cantab12 (talk) 13:54, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
I'm not commenting on whether fair use is justified or not. Commons does not support fair use, as it states on the upload form you used. Also they copyright claims in the EXIF data are for the photograph, not for the original painted image. To use a fair use rationale you would have to upload the file to your chosen wiki, and not Commons. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 13:59, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
Ahh, now I understand - how can I do that? I've only uploaded on wiki commons before... Cantab12 (talk) 14:02, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
It seems like the painter Herman Herkomer died in 1935 [4]. That's more than 70 years ago, so the painting is old enough to be out of copyright both in the US and the UK. There's no need to argue with Fair Use. Give me a few minutes to double-check and I'll update the file description page. --El Grafo (talk) 14:08, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Charity logo Glen Art

What is the procedure for uploading the Glen Art logo? I have permission from the charity to upload the image but obviously they do wish it to be altered. Do I just require written permission from the charity director which I send to you? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Indigojones666 (talk • contribs)

If they don't wish it to be altered then it can't have an appropriate CC license, therefore it can't be uploaded to Commons.--Fred the Oyster (talk) 14:35, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
More accurately, Wikimedia Commons requires that modifications be allowed. There are CC licenses that don't allow that, but they are not acceptable on this site, because they don't meet our requirements. - Jmabel ! talk 14:47, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
If a sufficiently free license is not available, Commons can't host the file. But you can still upload the logo on some local Wikipedias (like en-Wiki) under a claim of "fair-use". See [[5]] for an overview of language-specific Wikipedias and their handling of "fair-use". GermanJoe (talk) 16:30, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

This is really a question for English Wikipedia, as the file is hosted there (not here on Wikimedia Commons), but the reason you are not able to do this is that you have less than ten edits on English Wikipedia. LX (talk, contribs) 11:43, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

Berger (talk) 20:44, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

Well, physically uploading people tends to be difficult, but yes, photos of sportspeople are generally within our project scope. Of course, the photos would have to comply with our licensing requirements, just like photos of any other subject, so don't upload random non-free photos you just found on the Internet. Copyright help regarding File:TransportForAthens logo.jpg

The image is copyrighted by the "Athens Mass Urban Transport Organization" and used publicly to identify the company. It's being used publicly, so I don't think any trouble using it as referrence for the topic on it page in Greek. The source (http://tfa.gov.gr) is going to be the new official website of the service soon and the new logo (the image I uploaded) is already used widely. I've seen the image uploaded on WikiMedia before, but not all information about it were correct, so I decided to update the file accossiated with the page: https://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%A3%CF%8D%CF%83%CF%84%CE%B7%CE%BC%CE%B1_%CE%9C%CE%AD%CF%83%CF%89%CE%BD_%CE%9C%CE%B1%CE%B6%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%AE%CF%82_%CE%9C%CE%B5%CF%84%CE%B1%CF%86%CE%BF%CF%81%CE%AC%CF%82_%CE%91%CE%B8%CE%B7%CE%BD%CF%8E%CE%BD

Hello, I am new to uploading images on Wikipedia and I am quite confused on how to upload an updated logo properly while still maintaining copyright eligibility. I am updating the logo from this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1Password_logo.png to the new version of this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1Password_Logo_by_AgileBits_Inc..png . It would be amazing if you guys can help me fix it so it is copyright eligible on Wikipedia. Thanks.

Note: I tried following the template of the old logo but I must have made a mistake claiming the copyright and it turned out different. Thanks :D

The old upload form stopped working

I was uploading pictures from a samba show event I recently visited (with permission from the organisers), when the old upload form worked for the first picture and then just stopped working. After I had selected a file to upload, the form displayed its name next to the file upload box and then did nothing. Selecting a licence from the drop-down box also did nothing. I didn't dare click to continue because I feared it would upload an empty file. What's happening here? JIP (talk) 18:45, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

Works for me. What browser/OS do you use? Ruslik (talk) 20:45, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
Sounds like a javascript error. I have seen them fairly frequently on the old upload form lately. It shouldn't prevent the actual upload. One example of the error is Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2014/08#Central notice javascript error. MKFI (talk) 07:59, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

.js snippet to move Fave link out of the way?

I need to get the Fave link away from the watchlist star, preferably on the same row but farther to the left. Anyone have a .js snippet ready at hand? --Pitke (talk) 11:53, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

What is 'Fave link'? And what is 'watchlist star'? Ruslik (talk) 18:27, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Go to any file page, such as File:HanRenne.JPG. See right top of the page. Refer to this image to identify the area. "Fave link" is a blue link with the word "Fave". "Watchlist star" is the star-shaped link next to the "Fave link", and is white or blue depending on whether the user has that page on their watchlist or not. --Pitke (talk) 11:00, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
Just adding a link to the explanation of this optional gadget for other people like me who didn't remember what it was. You might have a better chance at a quick answer by asking directly to the writer of the gadget if he has suggestions for how you can do what you want. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:51, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
You need to copy the gadget into your userspace and to customize it. In particular you need to replace
mw.util.addPortletLink( $('#p-views').length ? 'p-views' : 'p-cactions', '#', '-', 'ca-fave', '-')
with, for instance,
mw.util.addPortletLink( $('#p-views').length ? 'p-views' : 'p-cactions', '#', '-', 'ca-fave', '-', undefined, '#ca-view')
See User:Ruslik0/Gadget-Favorites.js for the ready to use code. Then you need to disable the gadget and to add an importScript like in User:Ruslik0/common.js. Ruslik (talk) 20:55, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Media may be deleted

Hi, I received a message stating the following from a member of wiki commons :-

"Thanks for uploading File:Hibernians Fc Official Logo.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear".

The problem is that I dont have any idea how to solve this problem, I dont have time to read the technicalities etc because I am very busy at the moment. The only thing that I know is that I have uploaded the official logo emblem of my local Football club Hibernians and this logo was accessed from the following official Facebook Website page of Hibernians Fc Malta.

Hope that you can arrange it because many people from Paola ( my town) were complaining that the logo that was uploaded before wasn't the true Hibernians FC logo.

Thanks and regards

  • The image was deleted as it had insufficient license information regarding it's free status. Commons can only host freely usable media; the logo was too complicated to be ineligible for copyright, and thus, is assumed to be protected. You now have two options, you can either upload it to a local Wiki under fair-use rationale (if available, for English Wikipedia this is available at en:WP:NFCC); or, you can have the football club release the logo under a free license (such as CC), and have them either email through permission to COM:OTRS, or place a CC notice on the image on an official website (Facebook, generally, is insufficient as it is an easy way to COM:License laundering). Uploading a (previously deleted) photo onto a Wiki page

Hi there

I am trying to upload an image to a Frances Separovic's Wiki page. She owns the photo and has given me permission to upload her image under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license. I previously uploaded the photo only for it to be deleted, I think the reason for this may be because I'm a new user?

Nothing has been deleted yet, the file File:Frances Separovic.jpg is still there. Please read the message there on how to provide evidence about permission to upload the image under the given license. Also, does she really own the copyright? I suppose she didn't take the image herself. Usually, the copyright is owned by the photographer. --rimshottalk 07:36, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

  • Sorry, you seem to be a little confused. The website (more specifically the person who took the image) holds copyright and is the only entity that may release it under a free license. The website where you took the image from has a clear copyright notice in the footer, and we therefore must treat the image as copyright and not eligible to be hosted here. If the copyright holder wishes the image to be hosted here they should follow the COM:OTRS procedures. Sorry, but the image will likely be deleted very shortly; if OTRS confirm a free license it can be undeleted. ColonialGrid (talk) 10:35, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Interesting, your "save for web" fix apparently has a lower resolution (564K vs. 1.66MB), and on my box your 2nd (big) JPG works. Folks interested in "JPEG artefacts" caused by MediaWiki hopefully do something about it (save as PNG might do the trick, if it's a known bug on this side.) Im on a cell phone so cant examine the image in detail at the moment, but usually this sort of thing is caused by weird colour profiles. However http://regex.info/exif.cgi?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Farchive%2F4%2F4c%2F20141113133449%2521Ocean_Beach_area_Gallipoli_1915.jpg says no colour profile, but there is an app14 colour transform that maybe is causing issues. Bawolff (talk) 13:10, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
I tried converting it back and forth between pnm and jpg, and that seemed to fix issue, but it similarly gave a much lower file size. So meh, I have no idea. I still suspect it might have been in a weird colour space (Maybe CYMK). Bawolff (talk) 00:19, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
Yes, the original used CMYK. LX (talk, contribs) 06:53, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

i have permission to create a wiki page for a company however the logo which i added was deleted... any suggestions on how i can add the company logo?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sreeja2812 (talk • contribs) 11:56, 17 November 2014‎ (UTC)

Make the company's legal department send a formal release of the logo under one of the free licenses we accept to our copyright release "department" as explained at COM:OTRS. Note that releasing a logo under a free license allows anyone to use it for any legal purpose, including modifying it and re-distributing such modified versions. Trademark issues are unrelated to a copyright release. Lupo 12:10, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
When you say "a wiki page":
  1. Is that in the English-language Wikipedia?
  2. If it is in the English-language Wikipedia, or in the Wikipedia for some other language, when you say "i have permission to create a wiki page for a company," this would suggest you have some relation with the company. Have you revealed your potential conflict of interest on the relevant Wikipedia? (No problem here on Commons, but it is there if you are writing about the company.)
  3. Given that: if it is in the English-language Wikipedia, you can upload the logo there (rather than on Commons) as non-free. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline and en:Template:Non-free use rationale.

Nandita Berry photo

RE: Inquiry from Green Giant

I found the photo of Nandita Berry here: http://www.sos.state.tx.us/ and here: http://www.law.uh.edu/news/fall2013/1220berry.asp

Since it is a State (Texas) website, would it be copyrighted? It was paid for using taxpayers' dollars.

If no, then please let it expire. Thanks.

  • Although the U.S. federal government puts nearly all of its works in the public domain, other governments in the United States generally do not, so unless you can find some specific indication that this is in the public domain or otherwise free-licensed, the fact that it is on the State of Texas web site has no bearing. Even on federal web sites, you'd need to verify that the particular work originated with the government itself. For example, there is a ton of copyrighted material on the Smithsonian web site. - Jmabel ! talk 23:11, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

Direct upload from Flickr

I see that at Special:Upload it is now supposed to be possible to upload an image directly from Flickr.com, but I don't understand what URL to use. Typically, on Flickr.com you are looking at something roughly equivalent to our file page; if you go for the full resolution of a photo, it offers a download rather than providing a URL. Anyone know how best to do this? Is there a guide some place? Commons:Flickr files does not seem to indicate a way to do this. - Jmabel ! talk 23:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

I dont see that option at Special:Upload. Where is it exactly? If the upload form asks to enter a flickr url, I would guess the most simple for the user would be either the url of the description page of the photo (in the style www.flickr.com/photos/username/1234567890), or the url for the view of the original size (in the style www.flickr.com/photos/username/1234567890/sizes/o/). Flickr may be a little tricky to navigate, but clicking "view all sizes" lets one see the links to view the available versions. -- Asclepias (talk) 05:39, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
The option is a generic URL option, with a whitelist of sites from which we can upload. "View all sizes" in Flickr leads me to a download for the original size, not to showing it at a URL. - Jmabel ! talk 05:52, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
I made a test upload and worked perfectly. I used the URI https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5612/15625081007_8efcffce9e_o_d.jpg using copy link address at https://www.flickr.com/photos/kkoshy/15625081007/sizes/o/ Jee 06:05, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
(I still haven't found how to get that option at Special:Upload. Is it available to some categories of users only?) From the flickr description page of the photo, "view all sizes" leads me to one of the available views, from where clicking on "original" leads to the view in the original size, and from there, copy image url gives the url of the .jpg file, in the style "farm0.staticflickr.com/.../.....jpg". From the test by Jkadavoor, it seems that is the url the Commons system wants. I think that url is not available to the public if the user has disabled the access to it on flickr. If, for a particular photo, that url is not available, that may be the reason. -- Asclepias (talk) 07:00, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Asclepias: I've a "Source URL:" just under "Source filename:" at Special:Upload. I don't know it is only for Admin and License reviewers.
I think it is not possible for Flickr users to hide URLs or disable downloads for CC licensed files, now. So the only issue probably Jmabel faced is he clicked on that link which starts downloding instead of opening the file in browser. We need to right click and copy the URL. Uploading Cover Art for a Song

Is it possible for me to upload the cover art for a song to use in an article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Monopoly31121993 (talk • contribs)

Probably not, but your question is a bit vague, so I can't give you a definitive answer.
  1. I assume you mean you want to upload the art to Commons to use in an article in Wikipedia, probably the English-language Wikipedia. It is likely that if the article is about the song you can upload it to the English-language Wikipedia (not to Commons) under the en:Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline, using the en:Template:Non-free use rationale.
  2. If the cover art is very simple -- e.g. under U.S rules (you didn't say what country, and there is some variation) just typography and/or simple geometric shapes -- you can upload it to Commons as public domain because it would not be eligible for copyright.
  3. If you created the cover art, you can upload it to Commons under a free license as your own work, but we will probably need you to follow the COM:OTRS process to clarify that you are the artist.
  4. If you know who created the cover art or who might now own the rights, and can get them to release it under a free license, then you can upload it to Commons as long as you follow the COM:OTRS process to clarify that the permission is real. However, it is usually difficult to persuade people to give such a license on cover art.
I hope that answers your question; if not, then please clarify the situation. - Jmabel ! talk 01:16, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

Basic upload does not work anymore

Since last week, I can use Basic Upload (https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&uploadformstyle=basic) only once. As soon as I try a second time, the image thumbnail does not show as uploaded, and the whole thing freezes. Please do not suggest me to try the Upload Wizard. It is a personal choice. Tango7174 (talk) 14:36, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

Does this also happen with the non-basic version of Special:Upload? I'd guess the answer is "yes", but trying it might help the tech-people to figure out what's wrong … --El Grafo (talk) 15:06, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

Trying with the non-basic version of Special:Upload: the first pass went OK. At the second, I got exactly the same frozen screen as with the basic version. Tango7174 (talk) 16:36, 19 November 2014 (UTC).

This has been happening for a while although it seem to be becoming more common, see Commons:Help desk/Archive/2014/11#The old upload form stopped working. Using French Archive Photos

Hi, I'm looking for a French speaker who can help guide me to some achieve photos of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia during the 1950s. I found this page[6] but it's all in French and I'm not a French speaker. Can anyone guide me on how I can get some help on this? Many thanks!Monopoly31121993 (talk) 22:57, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi, "Guide you on how you can get some help on this" is a rather vague request. Trying to guess what you are asking:
  • If the idea is to upload such photos to Commons, that is probably not allowed by the policy of Commons, if those photos were first published in France, because such photos from the 1950s would not be in the public domain in the United States nor in France, unless they were released by their copyright owners.
  • If you're looking for specific help about using those photos outside of Commons, here may not be the best place to find what you need.
  • If you are only looking for suggestions about navigating that website, we can try to do that. The site has this search page for searching the image database. It has a drop down menu for choosing a place (territoire) in a list of names of places, boxes to narrow the search by entering a year (année) or a range of years (entre... et... = between... and...) and a box (plein texte) where you can enter search words to narrow the search. The results are displayed as a list with thumbnails.
  • If you are asking for a translation of the descriptions of individual photographs, we could help with specific questions, but you can probably get a general idea of the descriptions with automatic translation tools.
-- Asclepias (talk) 00:30, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
A more interesting question arises if some of them were first published not in France. Ruslik (talk) 02:15, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Country of publication may not matter under French copyright law, which, under the Fourth Republic would have been in force until, at least, 1955. Under the Fourth Republic all territory of the French Union was considered France, and the aforementioned nations were part of France (similarly to how all of Metropolitan France and the overseas departments and territories are considered France), ergo, all photos taken there were taken in France (where copyright is assumed from when the image is taken, and France would have been the nation of creation). It is unlikely that any of these images produced before 1955 are in the public domain; circumstances for post 1955 images would be case by case, but still unlikely. Ultimately though, these questions are best asked in concrete terms with specific reference to individual images on Commons:Village pump/Copyright. ColonialGrid (talk) 16:12, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
Why does French copyright law matter for works published in Vietnam? Even if we agree that works published in French Indochina have a country of origin of France (which is a very colonial interpretation), the Democratic Republic of Vietnam considered its independence day 2 September 1945.--Prosfilaes (talk) 01:24, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
What says that they were published in Vietnam, or in Australia, or in Texas? The available evidence is that a photo such as the one given as example in this question, is from a French agency, is kept in the French archives, and is actually published in France. No evidence has been provided that it was published in another country previously. -- Asclepias (talk) 04:00, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

Public domain question

Is it OK to copy images from copyrighted newspaper archives (e.g. newspapers.com, newspaperarchive.com, Fulton History etc.) as long as the original newspapers and images are old enough to be public domain, or are the images as they appear on such sites copyrighted, so one needs to find a different copy? If it is OK to use such images, is {{PD-scan}} the right template for them? Thanks. Sideways713 (talk) 16:58, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

  • Correct. Scans and other faithful reproductions are not considered original enough to warrant a new copyright. This is so long as it is faithful, and does not add new content or annotations. Just remember that the content has to be public domain in both the original country and the USA. ColonialGrid (talk) 17:29, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

Question on an image upload - copyright information - re-upload

Hello! I recently uploaded an image titled "Vivek Wadhwa 1" that I accidentally entered incorrect copyright information for. Another user flagged it for me, I thanked them then I deleted the image in order to re-upload it with the correct copyright information. When I try to upload the image I am unable to. Can you advise what to do? Thank you very much!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by KeKatie (talk • contribs) 18:54, 22 November 2014‎ (UTC)

Let's start with the facts, since you've left some facts out and got some things wrong above. Looking at the history of this page, you are User:KeKatie. Looking at your log, the file you're talking about is File:Vivek-Wadhwa-1.jpg, it was deleted by User:Krd based on the concerns raised in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Vivek-Wadhwa-1.jpg. (Since you are not an administrator, you could not possibly have deleted it yourself.)
You can't and should not attempt to recreate previously deleted content. I see no reason to believe that the legitimate copyright holder of this photo has released it under a free license, but if you think that you can convince Duke Photography to release the photo under a license that allows anyone to use it in modified or unmodified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes, please follow the procedure described here. If successful, the file will be restored by an administrator. LX (talk, contribs) 19:42, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

THANK you so much for explaining. I deleted it from the page that I had added it to, thought that had made it be deleted from the Commons area too. Thank you as well for letting me know about the release needed - and the process. I really appreciate it!! Again, thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by KeKatie (talk • contribs)

Photo for Hon Mrs Victor Bruce

The current photo on this page shows the subject with two other people. I feel a photo showing only the subject is more appropriate, so I cut her image from the group photo and uploaded it. If you have been using the group photo for years, why do you need more copyright information now? And if you do, how do I get it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by NancyRWilson (talk • contribs) 19:33, 22 November 2014‎ (UTC)

You haven't really given us much to go on... After some searching, I'm guessing that the page you're talking about is en:The Hon Mrs Victor Bruce and that the photo you're talking about is File:Amy mildred winifred.jpg. Looking at the edit history of the help desk, it turns out that you are User:NancyRWilson. Looking at your log, the file you uploaded was File:Mary Petre Bruce on completion of World Flight.JPG.
That file has been deleted, but according to Google's cached copy of the file description page, it looks like you somehow managed to upload the file without any licensing tag. Also, the source was not verifiable (it should have been a link to the original image) and what you entered as the author ("news photo circa Feb 1931") makes no sense – the author of a photo is the person who creates the photo, and photos can't author themselves. A verifiable source, correct authorship information and a copyright license or public domain rationale is needed for all files on Commons, so it's not surprising that a file looking like that was deleted. You were notified of the problem more than a week before it was deleted.
That said, some investigation of the original version is probably called for as well. I don't see why User:PeterWD would be the copyright holder of the work in question, as he claims. There is a free text paragraph that looks like a Wikipedia-only permission, quoted from a long since archived entry on en:Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Aviation/Style guide/Layout (Aircraft) from this edit. There was no mention of a Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication or of transferring copyright to User:PeterWD, and the preceding discussion only mentioned non-free licenses. Question on Crown Copyright (United Kingdom)

Hello, I have a question on copyright. Unless I'm wrong, the UK copyright law seems more based on death of the creator (e.g. {{PD-old-auto}}) rather than the date of publishing as in the United States' {{PD-1923}}. But Crown copyright is a bit different, and I'm curious as to whether works of the British Museum of Natural History are considered Crown copyright/UK government (as an example, pretend File:Arthur Stanley Hirst00.jpg or the artwork inside it was published in 1960 rather than 1920). I have no idea what policy is regarding this type of misrepresentation, but the images are identified as being a specific and noteworthy historical artifact, when they are not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.173.188.63 (talk • contribs)

  • When you say "packaging work" it is not exactly clear how you intend to use it. If you are creating a package for a product, then there would need to be a copyright notice on the package that would conform to the licensing terms of that CC-BY-SA 3.0 Unported license, which is probably a bit cumbersome in a context like that (at the bare minimum, you'd have to credit the image, indicate what license you are using it under, and provide a URL to the license terms), so you'd almost certainly do better to reach a separate arrangement with the photographer. If I've misunderstood what you are doing, then please clarify and I may be able to give you a better answer. - Jmabel ! talk 03:01, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi,
You don't need to ask permission if you use the image in compliance with the terms of the license. You can have a look at the help page Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia for a lengthy explanation. But more importantly, especially if you're planning a large-scale commercial distribution, you can (should) read the text of the license in question to know its exact terms: [7]. It may help to begin with the short summary: [8]. Note that this particular license is a "share-alike" type of license. It means that if you mix or integrate the flower image with other elements of your packaging, you might need to place the resulting derivative work under the same license. If that sounds like something you wouldn't want to do, you may prefer to look for another flower image offered under a more simple CC-by licence or, even more simply, one that is in the public domain.
You would need to contact the photographer and ask his/her permission only if you wanted to be exempted from one or several terms of the license or negotiate different terms. That said, even if you don't need to contact the photographer if you use the image in compliance with the terms of the license, you may choose to contact him/her. It can be useful if you want to be sure you have a common understanding of the terms of the license. How to contact someone depends where the image comes from. In your question, you're not telling what image you are talking about, so we can't help you more about that. If the description page tells that the image is the own work of a Commons user, you can look if he/she has made any recent contributions and if so leave a message on his/her talk page. If the description page tells that the image comes from another source, you can try to contact that source.

Watermarking removal vs image reupload

I'm a newb, so I posted 7 pics with watermark. The first was edited off (with explanation that watermarking is deprecated). Should I let the remaining 6 photos go through the same process, or should I update the pics without watermark, and risk being told I'm 'naughty' for asking for so many deletions? I don't know the proper etiquette for this.

Askthegeek (talk)

Deletions are not necessary if you simply re-upload the un-watermarked version of the image: Beneath the File history section there is a link to "Upload a new version of this file". Watermarks can inhibit the use or reuse of images, which is contrary to the spirit of a CC license. Animalparty (talk) 02:50, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

I see that when uploading I could provide a link to a site with a grant of permission that complies with licensing policy. Where during the upload would such a link be place so as to avaoind permission issues in the future...thank you...

Studying this further it appears I can add a link to the Summary under Source? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Webmeister1 (talk • contribs)

I've only looked at File:Plastic man.jpg and File:Dynasplat.jpg. Probably the reason these were speedy-deleted was that you gave the source as "own work", with no further explanation. Are you Tyler Turkle (who I take it is the author of these)? If so, have a look at COM:OTRS for how to send clear permission on things like this or, as indicated, you can link to a site where it is clear that you are the author of the material and that you've granted the relevant license.
Don't worry too much about exactly where you put a link to a site that gives permission, if that's how you are going to approach this; in the description would be fine. (The Upload Wizard isn't the greatest tool for anything subtle or complicated, it's more intended to make easy things easy for beginners uploading their own photos.) Nothing will be deleted without a human looking at the file page to see what's up; as it was, there was no indication there at all of any basis to believe these were OK.
I hope that helps; I doubt it completely solves the matter, and further questions are welcome. Please do sign them by typing four tildes (~~~~) and please just continue in this section rather than starting a new one with each post. - Jmabel ! talk 03:17, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
