Buzz Aldrin Selfie

Hi y'all, I just uploaded File:Buzz Aldrin EVA Selfie.jpg, I got the picture from the Huffington Post, however since the photo itself was take by Buzz Aldrin while he was employed by NASA I understood it to be public domain. The "original" I uploaded said copyright Buzz Aldrin 2014 (presumably it is added by the media host). I just want to confirm that that licence is appropriate before I use the image on Wikipedia. Would this be correct licence tagging on my part? If not, delete per copyvio, I just want a double check on my thought process for the upload. Thanks, --Kelapstick (talk) 20:18, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

@Kelapstick: I'm not entirely sure that it is PD because of his explanation of how and why he took the photo. Admittedly my source is not the greatest (Daily Mail in the UK). It says that the camera was intended for pictures of ultraviolet stars, which could only be done at night. Apparently he took the photo out of curiosity during the daytime, so technically it was taken by his own decision rather than NASA instructions. There is no question that he authored the photo but then again, would he have gone on a space walk of his own volition because it is not like you or me deciding to pop out for a quick ciggie break whilst at work (apologiesif you don't smoke). So I think it falls under COM:PRP because effectively we have an uncertain copyright status. Green Giant (talk) 22:17, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
Thank you Green Giant, you make a compelling argument, which is more or less what I thought (maybe/maybe not), I have nominated it for deletion, in order to get broader input as to if it is PD or not. --Kelapstick (talk) 18:52, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

--Jordanjasinski (talk) 11:04, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Hello Jordanjasinski. Thank you for highlighting the copyright link but unfortunately it is not a Commons-compatible license because the rest of that clause appears to state "z zastrzeżeniem, że logotyp skyisthelimit.aero nie został zdeformowany, zamazany lub zniekształcony w inny sposób uniemożliwiający jego odczytanie, a zdjęcie nie zostało poddane jakiejkolwiek formie obróbki." which Google translates as "with the proviso that skyisthelimit.aero logo is not distorted, blurred or distorted in other ways to prevent his reading, and the image has not been subjected to any form of treatment. That effectively means that derivatives are not allowed to be created and thus the image is not free for anyone to reuse, which makes it an unacceptable condition for Commons. Additionally we cannot host images that for non-commercial uses only. At the bottom of the website it says "Wszystkie prawa zastrzeżone" or "All rights reserved" which confuses the issue even further because that means the copyright holder does not allow anyone to copy, modify or distribute any of the contents of the website. Perhaps it is a mistake on the partof the website maintainer but it is nonetheless a legal statement and we cannot ignore it. Green Giant (talk) 13:48, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
"All rights reserved" doesn't mean that. "All rights reserved" is boilerplate that might have been necessary to protect copyright in the US and certain other nations at one point in history, and since then has been included as legal ritual as part of copyright notices. We should ignore it; it means nothing at all.--Prosfilaes (talk) 07:05, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
More to the point, if I understand correctly, Jordanjasinski, where you write, "I am exclusive author if the blog...", assuming you mean "I am exclusive author of the blog..." and that you took the photograph, then you can grant a license via the process described at COM:OTRS. But to place something on Commons, that license has to (at least) allow commercial use and arbitrary derivative works (e.g. CC-BY-SA, probably the strictest license we allow). - Jmabel ! talk 15:37, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Prosfilaes: while writing "All rights reserved" doesn't create any new rights, the default for a copyrighted work is that all legally available rights are reserved to the copyright-holder. Only such rights as are explicitly granted go to anyone else. - Jmabel ! talk 15:37, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
The default for a copyrighted work whether or not you put "All rights reserved" is that all rights go to the copyright holder. "All rights reserved" doesn't mean anything anymore; there's no reason to get flustered when it appears by a CC license.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:03, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

We don't give answers by mail unless there is a private issue involved. Please note that you are on Wikimedia Commons, which is a repository of free media (see COM:SCOPE). Articles are for Wikipedia, but your company needs to be famous to have an article. Regards, Yann (talk) 06:59, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Deleted picture

Hi! You have deleted a picture of an artist that was given by herself to upload here. It wasn't even a photo from the Internet - it was the private archive. How about getting to know the facts before acting?

Unfree images from Flickr

I uploaded four (among many) images from Flickr on 30 July. By agreement the owner of the copyright was to revert the licence to All rights reserved after allowing some time to elapse. The bot passed through on 2 August and by then the licence was once again ARR. How do I get out of this tangle please. The images are: File:Triumph Dolomite Roadster 1937 F (8309149464).jpg, File:Triumph Dolomite Roadster 1937 R (8309149856).jpg, File:Triumph Dolomite Saloon 1938 F (8309150286).jpg and File:Triumph Dolomite Saloon 1938 R (8308099273).jpg. Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 12:23, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

Does the copyright holder understand that a free license cannot be limited to Wikimedia projects and that therefore, it makes no sense to reserve all rights on Flickr while at the same time allowing Commons to host a copy under a license that allows anyone to use the files for any purpose? LX (talk, contribs) 13:00, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
I'm sure he does. I should think he is just limiting the exposure. So far as I am concerned anything that someone (who is prepared to give away all their rights as required for Wikimedia) wants they will get from me. Its a big hurdle to persuade people to jump. I suspect what has happened in my case is that something has gone wrong with the bot (died of old age?) and so its work was not done for some days rather than with a delay of a few hours. How to sort this matter out? Eddaido (talk) 13:36, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
You're sure as in you assume so, or you're sure as in you asked to make sure? In my experience, it's very common for people not to understand that Creative Commons licenses are perpetual and granted to the world at large. You're absolutely right to want to give those willing to share their content what they want, but I think we also owe it to them to make sure we understand exactly what they want and that they understand exactly what they get.
Anyway, I see two options: Either get the Flickr user to change to a free license again and replace the tag with a Flickrreview tag to get it reviewed again or follow the procedure described at Commons:OTRS. Because of the difficulty of establishing the identity of Flickr users, the first option is the preferred one. LX (talk, contribs) 08:53, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
Thank you, I will take option one. I was hoping that it would be recognised that it was impossible to upload an unfree image with Flickr2Commons. The background is that this donor has given some images in the past, simply uploading them himself. He agreed to do it quite happily for this set of four but just did not actually do it. I can't account for his reluctance but it was very real, all the reason he has given me is that he has complained of pressure of work but I don't think that's all of it. (Ownership of images of rare cars is as competitive and cliquey as ownership of the vehicles!, they don't like to give the vehicles away either) In fact its true all our (lengthyish) correspondence over these images has been conducted well after midnight our own time. I am really embarrassed that I now have to go back to him. I've now put hours of work into photoshopping out rough background and making sure he's content with that (I know the licence lets me do it but you have on file a very formal complaint from a Swedish photographer because I "fixed" the headlight lenses in his King's car(!)). Ah well. By the way it has been my experience over some years that OTRS is no more than a snare and a delusion. Very happy to expand on that here. Regards, Eddaido (talk) 12:57, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
OK, thanks for your work, sorry things didn't go smoothly, I agree that there are problems with OTRS, and I apologize on behalf of Swedish photographers. ;-) LX (talk, contribs) 14:34, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Category with one picture

How about categories where are only one picture, are those in scope, does the category needed because same sub-categories can be added diect to the picture--Motopark (talk) 07:48, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

  • An example would be helpful (especially because part of your question is very unclear English), but in many case it is perfectly OK to have a category with only one picture, especially if there is (or is likely to be) a corresponding Wikipedia article. - Jmabel ! talk 15:44, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
  • Personallyy I judge such categories by their potential i.e. is it possible that more files and pages could be added to such a category even in the remote future. If the answer is yes, I would support keeping the category. If it is a clear no, then obviously it is pointless keeping it. However, I would hesitate if the member file has no other category and no other potential category. Green Giant (talk) 16:08, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
One example Category:Liviu Dragnea--Motopark (talk) 21:03, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
Which has a good chance of having more pictures added to it, and makes it clear that that is, or at least should be, all the pictures we have of him right now, so people don't have to look through Category:Politicians of Romania to find more pictures.--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:30, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Ich habe ein Lizenztag hinzugefügt. Wie kommt es eigentlich, dass der Ausschnitt als Jahr 1336 hat, während bei der Einzelseite "circa 1220-35" steht? --rimshottalk 09:56, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
I believe the earlier date refers to the composition or translation of the text, and the later to the production of the manuscript itself.
Sounds plausible. I think 1336 should be the date then, because it's the year of the manuscript and the manuscript is a work in itself. --rimshottalk 19:40, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
Yes, especially for the cropped version in question, which is clearly focused on the illustrations rather than the text.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:08, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

What did I do wrong?

I tried to translate this file to Hungarian using Inkscape. On my computer it seemed okay, I saved as svg, and uploaded it to Commons, and it just looks wierd, even if I choose to view it in expanded view. Part of the text seems to bee missing, and there's a black rectangle in it. Clicking on the picture itself opens it correctly. I just don't understand, what the problem is. Here's the link. Any help or idea would be appreciated. --Kohlins (talk) 00:03, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

It looks OK to me, but from your description I suspect the problem is with the fonts used. See Help:SVG#Fonts / text, which provides a link to a list of supported fonts; the first subsection describes a “Flowed text“ bug that may also be relevant. (I seem to remember a better-presented list of fonts, in table format on a wiki page, but I can’t seem to find it now.) Part of the problem may have been inherited from the original, but not manifest there because no extended-set characters with diacritics were needed. Anyway, you can either replace the fonts with appropriate substitutes from the list, or convert the text (the misbehaving blocks, at least) into paths.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:59, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for your help, It seems I could fix it. --Kohlins (talk) 15:39, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

https://www.flickr.com/search/?q=truscon&l=comm&ss=0&ct=0&mt=all&w=126377022%40N07&adv=1

These all apply to the six Truscon articles I presently just created.

They would all apply for Category:Hy-Rib.

Video files with strange publishing behaviour

I'm uploading 3 timelapses, and I get strange behaviour with the publishing process. After a few seconds, the first file was ready to publish, but the others are hanging and don't seem like they're going to change. Here's what my screen looks like. [2] The really strange part is that all three videos are accessible to me through the search menu, so they must be uploaded and published already, but the software hasn't recognised that or something. Anyway, it's offputting as an uploader. Does anybody know why this might be happening? Thennicke (talk) 10:57, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

Hello Ssaz 12. At the top of any Commons page, look for the language link next to your username, it will probably say English. Click on it and it should display a box with numerous languages. At the bottom of the box should be two options. Click on "Display settings" and the box will change. Select English from the various options, followed by "Apply settings". Hopefully that should solve your problem. If not, feel free to ask here again. Green Giant (talk) 18:55, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
I live in a country where we don't speak English (But I can understand English). Before I do this it will say that you can view Wikimedia Commons in my native language. How does Wikimedia Commons know my native language? Why they change language itself?Ssaz 12 (talk) 06:08, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
Wikimedia Commons doesn't know your native language. The site's software may sometimes offer a selection of languages that are common in the country of your IP address. If the language "changes itself", it's likely because you are not always logged in when browsing, or because you followed a link to Commons which requests a specific language version by passing a uselang parameter, like http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Glühwendel_brennt_durch.jpg&uselang=de. Question (hope this doesn't sound weird though)

Hi. I was just wondering, is it against the rules to nominate my own uploads for deletion for no obvious reason? Survivorfan1995 (talk) 00:12, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

Yes; nominations for deletion need a reason. It's possible that "user request" might work, but it's questionable after six months. There's no reason to delete the two pictures you've uploaded.--Prosfilaes (talk) 01:55, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
I'm well aware that this is an extremely unorthodox reason, but I'm going to put my embarrassment aside and just say it anyway. U see, I've unintentionally landed myself into some trouble over on another wiki (which I'm still trying to sort out), and I'm a little worried that someone in real life might find out about it, so I'd personally like to remove these pics to reduce the likelihood of that happening. Yes, I know, you're probably thinking "This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard", but is there any possible way to get this done? Any possible way? I promise I'll never ask for something like this again. If it's not possible though, I understand. Just thought I'd ask. Just in case it is, how would "user request" work? Survivorfan1995 (talk) 04:26, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
Given that these are not recent, you should nominate for deletion in the normal manner and explain why you want it. If all you can say is "as a courtesy" then that's all you can say, but you probably won't get your deletion. If you can explain why you want them gone, then your odds are a lot better. - Jmabel ! talk 15:41, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Charros logo.gif

Look, this a logo for a baseball team. I got it from the baseball team's site, and the URL of that site was provided when I uploaded the file. The logo is for use in a Wikipedia article about that baseball team.

The information I've received about what sort of licence tag is appropriate, and where to put that tag, is unintelligible.

--Prescottbush (talk) 20:00, 9 August 2014 (UTC)

  • This logo looks to me to be complex enough that it is almost certainly copyrighted, so unless you are the rightsholder (and apparently you are not -- you say you got the logo from a website) you are not in a position to offer a license.
  • Commons accepts only content that is in the public domain or under a free license, and there is no evidence that this is either of those. See Commons:SCOPE#Must_be_freely_licensed_or_public_domain. If you can get permission for such a release under a free license from the owner of the copyright, see COM:OTRS for how to pass that along.
  • But you probably won't be able to get that permission, so you probably will want to upload the image to en-wiki as non-free content, rather than upload to Commons. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline and especially en:Template:Non-free use rationale to pursue that direction. - Jmabel ! talk 21:02, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
It seems like Prescottbush's reason for uploading the file here was to use it on es:Charros de Jalisco. Uploading it to English Wikipedia is not going to help achieve that, and Spanish Wikipedia, unlike English Wikipedia, does not allow local uploads of non-free content. LX (talk, contribs) 21:16, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
LX is correct about my reason for uploading to Commons. The idea is to have this logo in one place for all the languages that might exist for this article. Prescottbush (talk) 00:43, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
That won't be possible, except in the unlikely event that you can get the rightsholder to offer a license.
Sorry I assumed en-wiki; your question was written in English and you just referred to "Wikipedia". - Jmabel ! talk 10:30, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Greetings. Currently there are two categories on Wikimedia Commonsː Canyon Lake, Arizona and Canyon Lake (Arizona), which both cover the same subject. Pretty sure it would be a good thing to merge them. Because Canyon Lake is not a city, but a physical feature, I think the correct category title should be Canyon Lake (Arizona) - which also conforms with the English Wikipedia. The file was added to the English Wikipedia article in 2010 by an anonymous user, and the caption was later changed from "Au Sable Forks, NY" to "Keesville, NY". If you have knowledge of the local geography and think that the inclusion of the image or its description should be changed, I suggest you go to the English Wikipedia project and fix it. If you think the file description here on Commons needs fixing, fix it. If you think the filename is misleading, you can add to the file description page. Copyright help regarding File:Dscband colour.jpg

Attribution help needed

Dear editors: Editor Nash Gordon uploaded three photos in a batch today, and they were all marked as his own work. However, one of the photos, "File:Burliegh Falls perhaps early to mid 1920s high water flow.jpg" was actually taken by his grandfather. I believe that there should be no problem with copyright, since he is in possession of the negative, which he inherited after his grandfather's death, but the photo information is incorrect, since it says "own work". Can someone please change this to whatever is appropriate in this circumstance? Also, I notice that the word "Burleigh" is spelled incorrectly in the title. Do I just move the file to the correct title in the same way as I do at English Wikipedia? Anne Delong (talk) 03:23, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Photos of memorial

Hello, I have pictures I have taken of some public memorials (statue/sculpture and park benches) that are part of the Pioneer Women's Memorial Garden in Adelaide, South Australia and I would like to upload them for use on the Pioneer Women's Memorial Garden wikipedia page. Does this contravene any copyrights? If not, what licenses can I use?

Thanks, HFairlamb (talk) 00:13, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Photographic derivatives of statues and the like on permanent public display (but not 2-D artworks) are exempt from copyright in Australia, as in most Commonwealth countries; see COM:FOP#Australia for details & links. So it’s up to you how to license the pictures, whether you want to release them into the public domain or to apply one of the eligible Creative Commons or similar licences. (Your “intellectual property” consists in the composition, exposure & processing of the images.) Information about the sculptor, architect, or designer of the original is appreciated, if available, but not required.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:46, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Talk question

Is there a way to forward notices from commons talk to my English talk page automatically? --Big iron (talk) 14:25, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

No. There are several reasons for this. Message templates from Commons don't work on other projects, people who leave messages for you regarding your activities on Commons shouldn't have to watch pages on other projects for a response, and it generally makes sense to discuss people's activities on Commons on Commons. If you want, you can activate e-mail notifications for talk page messages in your preferences. LX (talk, contribs) 21:33, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
@Big iron: not exactly what you’re after, but there’s the XTools user script, whose “XEcho” component shows notifications from other WMF projects during a browsing session, once you’ve logged in through OAuth at its configuration page.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 08:33, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

How to delete links to not relevant categories

In for example File:Eizer L church.jpg there is mentioned for the categories: Cemeteries in Overijse (−) (±) (↓) (↑)|Sint-Maria-Magdalenakerk (Eizer) (−) (±) (↓) (↑)|Eizer|Churches in Eizer|Cemeteries in Belgium (+).
In the edit mode you see
In the preview you see as expected Categorieën:Cemeteries in Overijse|Sint-Maria-Magdalenakerk (Eizer)
How do I delete the part "Eizer|Churches in Eizer|Cemeteries in Belgium" ? Wouter (talk) 07:28, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

That's a very good question, there's nothing obvious about where it's coming from either. Perhaps from the metadata (is that even possible)? There is certainly a lot in the title field. -mattbuck (Talk) 09:04, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
Yes, the IPTC metadata contains those categories in the Caption/Abstract field. Looks like a bug which could potentially be abused for pretty disruptive purposes. LX (talk, contribs) 12:10, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Resale

Hello,

I work with a company that is developing online curriculum and database that can be sold to online high schools. I am wondering if as long as we follow license laws with giving proper attribution if we can use images that goes along with our curriculum. The curriculum will be sold and our company will be making money. Obviously, the pictures won't be the main reason we make money, but I just want to make sure if we used images from this site that we won't break copyright laws. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dsavage1988 (talk • contribs) 19:55, 12 August 2014‎ (UTC)

Yes, provided that the copyright information shown on Commons is correct (we cannot guarantee this, as uploads are not subject to systematic review and approval), that the license is compatible with Commons' licensing policy (which, among other things, states that licenses must allow commercial use) and that you comply with all licensing requirements, that should be fine. See Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia for a more complete list of things to consider. LX (talk, contribs) 20:42, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Technical problem - images not showing after rename

I have asked to move (rename) several files of the Category:Aircraft at American Air Museum Duxford, and after that, five of them are showing no image nor thumbs (please see here). I had included the symbol "@" in the new titles and the 'file mover' replaced it by "at" (and well, I think); maybe this is a clue to the problem. another wiki syntax?

Dear Wikimedia fellows,

I hope this page is a good place to contact some people in the Wikimedia project. Sorry if not.

I am impressed by the amazing work so many people are able to do using a Markdown-like syntax. I believe that, even if it fits basic needs of enriching and structuring text, such a syntax could be greatly improved. I remember the John McCarthy's lament at the W3C's choice of SGML as the basis for HTML : « An environment where the markup, styling and scripting is all s-expression based would be nice. » So, I am working on an environment, http://epsilonwiki.free.fr/alphawiki_2, devoted to writing, composing and coding in the WEB, where the markup, styling and scripting are unified in a single language, lambdatalk. I try to share some reflexions about this work. Would you find any interest in it?

This is my e-mail: marty.alain@free.fr

Best regards

I don't really see how this is relevant to Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository. Discussions regarding the syntax used in the Mediawiki software used by Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia and all other projects overseen by the Wikimedia Foundation are probably best held at the Mediawiki project. I own copyright to photo but did not make the photo. And I want it on a wiki page as the subject portrait

I want a photograph to accompany the wiki pages of Jerry Cooke, photographer, 1921-2005. Jerry Cooke left his photographs to me in his will. I own the copyright to a self portrait that I would like on the wiki page; and I am fine to make it available for free use. I am the copyright holder. I did not make this myself, from scratch, without copying or incorporating anybody else's creative work. but I am willing to release it under a free license.

I don't know if it has ever been published. My rationale for using this particular image is because Cooke used many different film & camera formats during his career as a photojournalist, and this photo is a great illustration of that. Please tell me how I can do this. I have tried unsuccessfully and am eager to get the photo posted. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yurikutschuk (talk • contribs) 16:48, 14 August 2014‎ (UTC)

Thank you for offering to do this. As you might have guessed, this is not the most common case, and it may be tricky to create a correct file description page using the Upload Wizard. Here is what I would recommend:
  • Go to this upload form
  • Press Browse... and select the file
  • Select a good name for the file, like "Jerry Cooke self-portrait.jpg"
Enter something like the following in the Summary field:

  • From the Licensing drop-down, select one of the options under "Not self-made, but has been released under"
  • Press "Upload file"
  • Send in a scanned copy of the will to our permission archive to document that you are indeed the copyright holder, making sure to mention the file name in the e-mail.

what do you do about vague categories like Category:Portuguese forts?

Hi,

This category is repeated added to Portuguese colonial forts in various countries. The problem is that it is vague, and ends up putting forts in India, Brazil, Iran, Malaysia, Spain etc. ultimately into Category:Military facilities of Portugal

Category:Portuguese forts puts everything into Category:Military facilities of Portugal. Is several cases these are ruins, in one case its a UNESCO site, in another a Cultural Heritage site. None of them are currently Military facilities of Portugal. Is it true that categories should be clear and specific? Thanks, Parabolooidal (talk) 21:47, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Photos in the categories "Media needing categories" are put sometimes in a "vague" category. Others who have more knowledge about it or understand better the description in for example Portuguese can put them in a more specific category. Photos in the category "Media needing categories" are "lost" when both the file name and the description are not meaningful. If you can put some of the photos in the right category would be wonderful. Wouter (talk) 17:10, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

I need help from someone familiar with image copyrights

File:StarCraft II Legacy of the Void Logo Mockup.png was recently added to the Wikipedia page Legacy of the Void. The image is claimed as being copyleft, but I am suspicious here for two reasons: First, the copyright for the StarCraft series is held by Activation Blizzard, which means that anything related to the series would likely by copyrighted by default. Secondly, the image in question very closely resembles the Blizzard-released screens for the game in question, which further fuels my suspicions that this one, despite being an ostensible copyleft image, may in fact be a derivative copyright image.

I am not good enough with the image copyright policies and guidelines to move on this, so I would need someone more familiar with this area to pick up and run with this, and if I am on to something readjust the image accordingly. TomStar81 (Talk) 03:03, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

  • You still need to state a specific license (either CC-BY-SA, or something even less restrictive). Edit the file page to remove the template and substitute the license tag for the license you wish to grant (e.g. or another free license of your choosing). Then see COM:OTRS for how to send permission, and once you have sent it, tag the file page with OTRS pending. If that's at all unclear, feel free to ask further. (By the way, if you upload files in the future, a clearer file name would be better. Almost no one but you will know what "Fct" means.) - Jmabel ! talk 04:00, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

@Ajohns90: Probably the best way, assuming you are talking about Soldotna, Alaska is to upload the seal to the English Wikipedia and make a Fair Use claim. LGA talkedits 00:08, 19 August 2014 (UTC)
Is there a copy of the original contract available? It’s not unusual for the copyright on commissioned artwork to be assigned to the client in such arrangements. An e-mail from a City domain to OTRS describing the relevant terms ought to suffice. Otherwise, though, and for the specific purpose on the English Wikipedia, the above suggestion—to upload locally with a FUR—is probably your best bet. Trivial problems with my user space

Forgive my apparent stupidity... Having used Wikimedia commons for some time now, one would think I would know how to do these simple tasks. But as I've never needed to do them up until know, there has not been a "need to know".

  • I'm somewhat frustrated as I lack the ability to move the Top icon template above the heading line here. It currently sits in the middle of the line and annoys me. And yet on my Wikipedia equivalent, the top icons appear above the top line by default.
  • Secondly on my user page I've been forced to add <br> many times to prevent images/templates appearing where they shouldn't. Is there a line of code you can type that prevents images from aligning next to the section above with out having to write <br> many times over?
  • Finally, On this page, you'll notice a slight margin between the custom talk page header and Usertalkback. How do I remove the space and join the two boxes together so it appears like on my Wikipedia eqivalant?

While trivial problems they are quite frustrating. Any assistance given would be appreciated. Wiki ian 16:40, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi ian!
  1. is probably an issue with Top icon itself here on Commons. It hasn't been updated since 2012 and probably hasn't kept up with Mediawiki's stylesheets. To me, it looks broken everywhere where it's used. Changing the code for the first div tag in the template to <div style="display:none; right:{{#expr: {{{number|{0}}}}*(2+{15})+10+{{{offset|{0}}}} }}px; {}" class="metadata topicon nopopups {}" {{#if:{}|id="{id}"}}> just like on English Wikipedia might go a long way, but I'm not about to make the change and test the results with all the different skins right now.
  2. can usually be addressed by adding an element with an appropriate clear CSS property, such as preceding a new section which you don't want images to spill into with a single <br style="clear: both;" />
  3. Add margin-bottom: -1px; to the style property in the second line on the page.
LX (talk, contribs) 17:05, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
About the first question, I'm sure someone will soon come with a better answer, but until then you could just ignore the template and use something like
<div class="topicon" style="right:60px"></div><div class="topicon" style="right:35px"></div><div class="topicon" style="right:10px"></div>.
I know nothing about coding and I really have no idea if that is anything close to being good practice, but it works to give the result you want. N.B.: Those images are not in the public domain and their links to their licensing information must be preserved. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:18, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
@LX: Thankyou so much for your quick and easy to follow response. It's a pity about Top icon. I hope someone gives that template a touch up in the near future. Regards, Wiki ian 17:22, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
@Asclepias: That would be great if you could let me know how well it works. Feel free to update me directly on my talk page as this page is about to come off my watch list. Wiki ian
You can remove the template and instead copy the above code and see the result. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:38, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

A 1910 photograph, author unspecified

According to this website, this photograph was taken and/or published in 1910. The photographer is not named anywhere. The subject was a journalist, so I suppose the photograph appeared in a publication of some sort. Is it suitable for Commons? Surtsicna (talk) 15:51, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

If the work is anonymous and was published before 1944, the copyright has expired. However if it was published only recently it may be affected by the publication right. Ruslik (talk) 16:56, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. Does this look alright? Surtsicna (talk) 17:59, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
No. You have neither provided any evidence that it was published before 1944 nor that the photographer is anonymous. --Stefan4 (talk) 14:20, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
Have you opened the links I gave above, Stefan4? One of them says that the photograph dates from 1910. Furthermore, the woman in the photograph is clearly younger than 63 (the subject was born in 1880). Isn't that enough evidence? As for the latter, Ruslik implied that the work is anonymous if the author's name cannot be found. None of the online version of the photograph names the photographer. Surtsicna (talk) 14:46, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
The page only says that the photo dates from 1910, but it doesn't say anything about when it was published. It also doesn't say anything about whether the photographer is anonymous or not. I'd suggest that you look up the original publication (possibly from 1910, possibly later) and check whether the photographer is named there. --Stefan4 (talk) 15:20, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

The photograph appears (at a better resolution) in "Anna Rüling": A Problematic Foremother of Lesbian Herstory, Christiane Leidinger, Journal of the History of Sexuality, Vol. 13, No. 4 (Oct., 2004), pp. 477-499, Fig 1. It is marked there as taken in 1910 and copyrighted to Frauen Kultur Archiv Düsseldorf. I suggest you track down the right person to check with at the archives. -- (talk) 14:50, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

To get rid of bizarre embedded stuff, you could try this: (1) Open the file in Paint; (2) Save as a BMP; (3) Close and re-open Paint for the BMP; (4) Save it under a different name JPG. Then try the upload again. The point is to try to wipe out embedded stuff. I know from experience that that method clears some of the usual metadata, at least. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots06:37, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
While that works, it is by far the least preferred way to do it. Converting to BMP and back to JPEG will reduce the quality of the image. I would suggest trying various EXIF editing or stripping tools or even posting the URL here so someone else can try. I would only use a BMP conversion as a last resort. Trlkly (talk) 06:47, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
The damage can be minimized by saving & uploading as a TIFF or, assuming the image is in RGB, a (24-bit) PNG instead of a JPEG. Of course the resulting file will be larger (in most cases) but at least will suffer no further loss of detail. That said, I agree the ‘surgical’ approach of removing the problematic metadata without touching the image itself is the best solution.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:48, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
Also, I notice that the origingal Flickr file was cropped. If your version is uncropped, please upload it under a different filename. The cropped version is currently in use on many pages. Trlkly (talk) 06:56, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
I've updated the FAQ entry. Of course you can remove the HTML also from EXIF data in Flickr files. The paragraph about Flickr just pointed out that you can view the EXIF data on Flickr direcly. To edit it, you have to download the file to your computer and then remove the HTML in the EXIF locally before uploading that local copy. Lupo 10:39, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

I was going to download it from Flickr and use that, but I couldn't see how to download it, other than by a screen capture. I don't have software to edit the exif data (only to view it). So I did the convert to BMP and back trick, and that worked. Thanks to all of you, and my old buddy Bugs. Bubba73 (talk) 19:02, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Use of Facebook photos

When I read the Facebook "Terms of Service", it states that anything that you make (publicly) viewable on your Facebook page may be reused in any fashion by anyone (including anyone outside of Facebook),

See the section "Sharing your content", https://www.facebook.com/legal/terms

Does this mean that I can add a photo from a publicly viewable Facebook page to Wikimedia Commons?

There is a notable academic whose only non-copyrighted photo appears to be on a Facebook page for a University in Lebanon.

Would this be an acceptable image for Wikimedia Commons?

Thanks for any help/info.

Cliffswallow-vaulting (talk) 00:50, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, I do not see where the Terms of Service say this. Ruslik (talk) 11:51, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
No, you cannot upload photos from Facebook to Commons unless they are explicitly published under a free license by the copyright holder; see Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Internet images. The clause "you are allowing everyone, including people off of Facebook, to access and use that information" is essentially an assertion that published content is published and may be subject to fair use. It does not mean that the content is published under a perpetual free license that explicitly allows anyone to use the content in modified or unmodified form for any purpose including commercial purposes. I am an experienced Wikipedia editor, but not very active on Commons.

My understanding was that Commons cannot host non-free images like logos; those must be uploaded to Wikipedia under non-free use exceptions. Do I have that right?

I have a COI with CSG International. Their logo is currently on commons as "own work" and "Creative Commons" license, which is obviously not correct. I am not sure what is appropriate conduct for an editor with a COI on commons or the best way to correct the issue, because I am not very familiar with Commons. Promotional user page

Hi! I'm writing because I recently found a userpage that is being used for promotion. The page in question is User:Trantales Entertainment. The issue here is that this is a copy of the article from Wikipedia, where it was deleted as non-notable. The user who cross-pasted it was actually blocked temporarily back when this first happened in February, for disruptive editing. This looks like it's a way for him to try to circumvent deletion and have a copy to pull from whenever the article on the main Wikipedia section gets deleted. Can anyone delete this for me? Tokyogirl79 (talk) 07:26, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

I have blanked it as out of scope. It is not actually a registered account on Commons, so the page ought to be deleted now by an admin for that reason. -- (talk) 07:43, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

I'm back- I recently deleted an article (Wincentz Heydaroghli Pahlavi II) because it was a blatant hoax. Copyright help regarding File:MOL Group logo.png

Hi, i have a problem with this logo. There is on the Wiki article "MOL Group" the official website, molgroup.info. And on this website is the new logo, but not in picture format, that is embedded version. I made a .png picture from that site and upload this file to the wiki article, but i dont know what license type must to use it. Pls help me how can i modify the file to compliance to the policy. Sorry for the problem.

--EAndy81 (talk) 09:20, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

The solution is to request deletion of the file here and instead upload it to English Wikipedia directly as a fair use image like the older logo but that might need to be deleted. Green Giant (talk) 14:35, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

jpg image file

I have uploaded a picture and was issued a delete notice. The person who took the photo is happy for it to be used. Please advise. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cleohiggins (talk • contribs) 19:46, 21 August 2014‎ (UTC)

Hello Cleohiggins. I assume you are referring to File:Harvey Lisberg.jpg at Wikipedia, which is technically a separate project. Don't worry too much if the image does get deleted because it can always be undeleted at a later date. If you have permission from the photographer then the best course of action is to ask them to send an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org using the format at COM:ET, not forgetting to highlight that the photo is at English Wikipedia. Then you should add OTRS pending at the top of the file page for the photo as this may result in deletion being delayed a while longer. As soon as an OTRS volunteer confirms the permission they can get the image restored (if it has been deleted) and move it to Commons. However, please note that there is sometimes a backlog so patience is advised. It is more important to us that we get things right than to do things in a hurry. Traducción texto de figuras

Hola, ¿cómo se sube una figura a la cual solo se le ha cambiado el idioma del texto? ¿Cómo una nueva versión de la figura original? Gracias.--Cristina busch (talk) 14:58, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Hello, Do you mean, for example, in File:Osmoseragulation Carangoides bartholomaei bw.png? In a case like this, when the text is a part of the image itself, the new image with a different language should be uploaded as a *different* file, *not* as a new version of the existing file. The reason is that the different images will be used on different Wikipedias. When you changed the image of the file File:Osmoseragulation Carangoides bartholomaei bw.png from German to Spanish, the result is that the readers of the Wikipedia in German now see an image in Spanish. That is not good. It is important that you revert your change on File:Osmoseragulation Carangoides bartholomaei bw.png, to bring it back to the version with the text in German, and upload your image with the text in Spanish under a different file name. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:18, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Hola, Necesitaría que me expliquen como hacerlo.Gracias.--Cristina busch (talk) 20:03, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Hello, For the revert or for the new upload?
  • For the revert of the file Osmoseragulation Carangoides bartholomaei bw.png, in the section «Historial del archivo» ("File history"), click the link «revertir» ("revert") located immediately to the left of the date "06:23, 3 September 2010". That will revert to that version of the image.
  • For the new upload, choose a new name for your translated image (it can be similar to the other file name but it must have at least some difference, for example you could choose Osmoseragulation Carangoides bartholomaei bw es.png or any other file name you want) and upload it as a new file, like you did for your other contributions of new files, for example File:Modelo de la expulsión de ClNa por las células de cloruro de las branquias de peces teleósteos.jpg, etc. But do not forget, in the "source" field of the new file, to add a link to the other file and, in the "author" field, to credit the two authors of the other file.
-- Asclepias (talk) 21:55, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Gracias.--Cristina busch (talk) 22:14, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Can I contribute using my windows phone?

I cannot for the life of me understand why Wikimedia is not representing with official apps on Windows Phone. In the absence of these tools is it possible to upload images on to my Nokia Lumia 1020, running 8.1? And if so, step by step instructions would be appreciated. I really get over transferring to my PC. Thank you, Wiki ian 19:16, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

The only thing I can suggest is Commons:Mobile app, but I'm not sure whether mobile uploads are going to be restricted or not. Green Giant (talk) 20:54, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
There aren't any plans to develop the Commons App for Windows Phone. The alternative is to access one of the upload forms from your phone's browser, but as that would probably be more difficult than transferring the files to your PC and uploading them from there, I wouldn't recommend it -–moogsi (talk) 23:32, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
I must say this revelation is quite annoying, considering I've been lead to believe no camera on a Windows phone (or any other phone for that matter) tops my Lumia 1020. Does Wikimedia encourage editors feedback on the lack of Windows Phone support? If so where can I make my voice heard on this matter? Wiki ian 10:08, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

How to upload images from flickr now theb toolserver and flickr upload bot is no more

I used to use the flickr upload bot, hosted on the tool server, to upload eligible images straight from flickr to commons. The tool server and the bot have now been decommissioned, but the closing comments suggest that this functionality is now supported elsewhere. But none of the links seem to take me anywhere useful. Is there replacement fuctionality somewhere, or do I have to go through the laborious process of downloading each image to my hard disc, and then manually uploading them?. -- Chris j wood (talk) 18:00, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

  • Although the message has been removed, another user asked how to do OAuth, which I think is a sensible question. Basically when you are at the Flickr-2-Commons page, you are presented with a form to fill in. When you've filled in the form, click on the link which says "authorise first" and this should open a new window at Mediawiki. The window will have a box which starts with "Hi Username, OAuth Uploader would like to ..." and ends with a button that says "Allow". Click that button and you are taken to a confirmation page. Leave that page alone and go back to the Flickr form and click the "Run" button. Green Giant (talk) 22:48, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

How to download a film from Wikipedia?

I am a teacher in China and would like to download a WWII film from Wikipedia.

The film is https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9f/Flying_Tigers_Bite_Back.ogg/250px--Flying_Tigers_Bite_Back.ogg.jpg

Also what player would you recommend for an *.ogg file?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hello Davidm rose,
  • go to File:Flying Tigers Bite Back.ogg
  • directly below the preview image you should find the line Flying Tigers Bite Back.ogg ‎(Ogg multiplexed audio/video file, Theora/Vorbis, length 4 min 33 s, 320 × 240 pixels, 413 kbps overall)
  • right click on that link and select Save as … (or however your browser calls it)
For playing *.ogg files en:VLC media player, should do the trick. --El Grafo (talk) 19:22, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
