Upload as "new version" or new file

Hello. I downloaded the public domain drawing at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bagou.jpg and colored it in and converted it to the .svg format. Now, I would like to upload my new version, and am ok with my new version still being public domain. I worry that if I upload my file as a 'new version' then others won't have the choice of the older version; however, I worry that if I upload it as a new file that it will seem like I'm trying to say I did all the work myself. What do you recommend?

Upload as a new file, link to the other file, credit the author if you can figure out who it really is.
(That said, the description page of the other file is strange. The uploader claims that he is the author and that he owned the copyright before declaring it public domain, but he says the source is someone else and affixes an own work tag to that other name. And why is the description "the crab" when it shows a frog?)

Google search and permission options

Google advanced search shows four options for reuse: "labeled for reuse", "labeled for commercial reuse", "labeled for reuse with modification" and "labeled for commercial reuse with modification". Which of these is considered acceptable? ATinySliver (talk) 02:48, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

file should be renamed/moved

File:Philipp Apian-Circulus Bavaricus-1688.jpg should be renamed because the name wrongly credits Philipp Apian. Creator of the map is Frederik de Wit.

New name should be File:Frederik de Wit-Circulus Bavaricus-1688.jpg or just File:Circulus Bavaricus-1688.jpg.

File:Vertical Temperature Profile in Permafrost (English Text) copy copy.jpg

I accidentally named my file, "File:Vertical Temperature Profile in Permafrost (English Text) copy copy.jpg", when I uploaded it. It should be named "File:Vertical Temperature Profile in Permafrost (English Text).jpg" (without the "copy copy"). It is used in two places in En.Wikipedia. I apologize for the inconvenience. Modifying an Image

If a photo that I find here says that I have permission to "modify" it, then that means that I would be allowed to crop the photo and then upload that version of it to Wikipedia, right? If so, should I upload the cropped version of the photo here at the Commons or should I just upload it directly to Wikipedia? --Jpcase (talk) 17:25, 24 December 2013 (UTC)

I've been having a horrible time--it's taken more than three hours of cruising help files and searching Wikipedia--trying to find the answer to a simple question, and that question is "How do I find or produce a listing of the image files that I have uploaded? I want to use one of the images, and I'd like to rename it, but I don't remember what it was originally named when I uploaded it? Where are my images?" Bwisok (talk) 17:33, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

  • Hi Bwisok, just look to the top right and you should see an 'Uploads' link next to Log out. Also its best for these sorts of pages to start a new question rather than add onto a previous one - just click 'Add topic' or 'New section' (depending of page type) also found near tthe top right (one line down) - Hope that helps - Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 18:58, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Just put {{Watermark}} on it. On the other hand, if I would be the copyright-holder, I wouldn't like it. BTW, you could do this yourself fairly easy with GIMP (it's free) or even simpler image manipulation programs. -- Rillke(q?) 15:34, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

I don't see my page

  • You can click on the "contribs" link in the previous line to see the images you've uploaded to Commons. Anything on a particular language Wikipedia, you'd have to ask there, but if you wrote a page about yourself in Wikipedia it most likely got deleted as vanity/conflict of interest. All I see that you've done on Wikipedia that hasn't been deleted is a bunch of edits to your user page on the English-language Wikipedia and one image, en:File:Ibatabros_profile_wikipedia.png, which appears to be identical to File:IbatabrosWikipedia2014.png which you uploaded here on Commons. Assuming you are the person in the photo, though, how could you be the "author" of an image that appears to be a screen-grab of a television image of yourself? Similarly, File:Ibatabros Band.jpg and File:Ibatabros II.jpg appear to be identical, and again how could you be the person who took the photo if you are in it? - Jmabel ! talk 01:51, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Citing a publisher who is out of business

Can I upload images of a photos of Nuremberg from a souvenir pack of photos from a publisher in Nazi Germany who is no longer around (H. Hunsinger, Nuremberg, Germany)?

Copyright lasts 70 years after the author's death in Germany. And even if public domain in Germany, it is possibly not in the U.S., if published after 1923. -- Rillke(q?) 15:38, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Book cover

Hello, for better illustration of this article [1] and others related to it, i would like to know if i'm allowed to upload the original Portuguese book cover of the same.   • Not allowed on Commons, unless the cover is so simple as to be uncopyrightable (e.g. just text and simple shapes). pt-wiki may have a policy or guideline similar to en-wiki's guideline for non-free use, but that would be entirely internal to pt-wiki, and would require uploading the image there, not to Commons. There's nothing on pt-wiki directly linked from that guideline on en-wiki, but they may have some quasi-equivalent. Anyway, you'd need to ask on the help desk of pt-wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 01:40, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

File:Portrait la Gueriniere.jpg

Possibly due to caching problems, a higher-contrast grayscale version of this image that I tried to upload did not appear. So then I tried it again; then, when it did appear after all, tried using the "revert" option, which had bizarre and unexpected results. Does anyone feel like sorting out the mess I have made? The version I wanted to revert to is this one, timed 23.04, all others (apart from the original) are simply user error. Incidentally, the image was uploaded by User:Conversano Isabella as "own work" with a CC licence, but is obviously an engraving from an antique book, should presumably have something like PD-Art-100. Bonjour, Une recherche du site avec les mots «Joute» et «Riopelle» [2] retourne les 20 photos qui sont actuellement dans la catégorie «La Joute by Jean-Paul Riopelle», ce qui signifie qu'il n'y en a probablement pas d'autres sur le site pour le moment, à moins qu'elles ne comportent pas ces deux mots dans leur description. Pour chaque photo, le nom du photographe, ou son pseudonyme à utiliser, se trouve habituellement dans le champ «auteur» dans la page de description spécifique de la photo. Par exemple, le photographe de la photo Jp-riopelle-joute.jpg doit être identifié par le pseudonyme Montrealais. Vous pouvez réutiliser toute photo offerte sous licence libre sans qu'il soit nécessaire de contacter le photographe, à condition de respecter les conditions de la licence de réutilisation indiquée sur la page de description de la photo concernée. Using Wiki Commons Pictures

  • The file page for each picture on Wikimedia Commons indicates the licensing of that particular image. In each case you have to comply with that particular licensing. Many images indicate that they are in the public domain, and those should be no problem at all: simply use them as you will. However, many other images will (for example) have license terms requiring attribution (which in this case would presumably come in the credits at the end of the video). On the latter, if you need to negotiate different terms, you might be able to do so by contacting the respective uploaders.
  • If there are any particular licenses where you don't understand the terms, feel free to come back here and ask. In each case, it would be helpful if you would link the individual image page (e.g. File:Himmler Signature 2.svg) so it is easy for someone to follow up and see what exactly you are looking at. - Jmabel ! talk 17:25, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

How do I download an animation?

Hello, My boss found this animation that he would like to use in his presentations. The animation is "File:Double-compound-pendulum.gif" that is found under the "Chaos Theory" article page on the right hand side. However, I cannot figure out how to download it (this animation has been released to the public domain). Everytime I right click I can save it as a series of pictures, but not animated like it is on Wikipedia.

Can someone please instruct me on the best way to do this, please? i am working on a Mac. Thank you!

Using Chrome (windows), when I click "download" on File:Double-compound-pendulum.gif I get a popup offering various sizes including "full resolution". That is a link to media:Double-compound-pendulum.gif, and it starts the download of one Double-compound-pendulum.gif (218 KB, MD5 4ed12209 f8cbc5a7 88fe867a dd1fd3f1) for me. I opened the GIF with an image viewer, and it works as expected. On this page between the picture and the description you find the same media:Double-compound-pendulum.gif link, maybe your browser offers to right click on it, and pick "save link as...". –Be..anyone (talk) 03:36, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

  • You are here at Wikimedia Commons, not at Wikipedia. Commons is for media files such as photographs or videos, not for text. That's why doc and docx are not allowed here. If you are trying to upload an article for Wikipedia: There is no such thing as "uploading an article from a file". Wikipedia articles are created online, in your browser. See en:Wikipedia:Your_first_article for an introduction on how to write an article for the english language Wikipedia. Wikimedia Commons Image Search Troubleshooting

Typically, when one does an image search in Wikimedia Commons by keywording the author's username, images of the author's contribution should list down along with some unrelated images. But for some unknown reason, the author's images will not list down under the search page, even though the author properly uploaded the images via the upload wizard. Consequently, the author can see his/her contributions via his/her Contributions Page, but will not list down at the image search page. This will be an issue if the author wants his/her images to be seen in public or a fellow editor would want to use the author's images but can't due to this problem. Can anyone help? Upload copyright

I once uploaded the file File:Wikipedia ads.png and it got deleted from being a copyright violation. That file was a screenshot of a Wikipedia page in Google chrome that had ads because of the Java update virus that I accidently downloaded. Later on, I learned that Wikipedia is actually not copyrighted. Was it just the ads in the image that were copyrighted? Is the look of a browser copyrighted and the only reson the file File:Editwar.png isn't a copyright violation because it doesn't show the edge of the browser on the outside of the edit war or the bar at the bottom of the computer screen which might be copyrighted? Does that mean I'm allowed to upload any screenshot of a Wikipedia article that doesn't contain a file that was non-free content directly uploaded to Wikipedia? Since fastily (talk · contribs) did the deletion, you might do best to ask him about his rationale. My take:
  • Wikipedia content do remain copyrighted by their authors, but are free-licensed.
  • Typically, browsers' visual skins are copyrighted and rights are reserved, but could be de minimis in a particular image.
  • The ads in your image were presumably copyrighted with rights reserved.
  • Some Wikipedia articles contain non-free images that would not, in their own right, be eligible for Commons. Typically an image of such an article would not be eligible for Commons.
  • Typically I would think a screen grab of a Wikipedia article would be out of Commons' scope, but there might be exceptions.

Migrating files from en.wiki that use en.wiki templates on the file description page.

I'm migrating w:File:FPSChart.svg across from en.wiki and it uses the w:Template:familytree set of templates. What would be the best way to go about replicating this on Commons given the templates do not exist here? Copy the templates here? Copyright help regarding File:Jiang Bingzhang.png and File:草桥学舍创办人蒋炳章墨迹.jpg

Hi there,

The portrait photo is my grand-grandfather, Binzhang Jiang, who died in 1930 A.D.. The calligraphy is also my grand-grandfather's work. I don't have any photo of himself or his works, and I don't think any of the photos survives within our family after nearly a hundred years. It's great lucky for me to find his portrait and his calligraphy picture from websites of the schools my grand-grandfather had founded(http://www.szcqzx.com.cn/xyfc/201008/294.html and http://www.njschool.cn/Item/2138.aspx), which made his profile to honor him.

1) Due to the reason above, Is there any possible that you could keep the pictures I uploaded? 2) Do you have any suggestion on what I could do to upload any picture about my grand-grandfather? I'm afraid that I will have the same issue uploading pictures or photos of my grandfather and my grand-uncle. 3) Is the copyright of any photo or picture expired 50 years after it was taken in People's Republic of China? If I upload my grandfather's portrait photo, which was taken from an unknown studio at least 4 decades ago, would Wiki Common keep that photo? 4) If I go to the schools my grand-grandfather had founded and take photos from the pictures the schools have, Would it be possible that Wiki Common would admit that the photo I shoot is rightful copyright of mine and allow me to upload those photos?

Assuming this is definitely a photo of your great-grandfather, have you actually taken these images yourself and posted onto the websites of the schools? Then you could assert yourself as the copyright owner, but we can't determine whether the school owns the copyright or yourself (it's a matter of intention, if you took it on behalf of the school or waived any copyrights to the school then it is the school's property, but if you took it for your own use and only decided later to give it to the schools as gifts then it is your property). That said, you could ask the schools to change what their copyright status has to say about these images so they'd comply with the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. You could also, if you're the copyright owner, ask them to unambiguously credit your work by say printing your name ("Image by: <your name>") somewhere on the page that the image is featured.

Can an Image found in the internet whose copyright has been expired be uploaded?

I copied the image from http://www.indiastrategic.in. Copyright of this image has already expired in 2012. I have uploaded this image in Commons. Will this image be removed? If yes, then which option should I use to upload this image? Thanks, Krarjunakr (talk) 17:26, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

The image cannot be uploaded to Commons without the copyright holder giving it a free license. There is no reason to believe that this has happened. What makes you think the copyright has expired? --rimshottalk 19:08, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Wollte die Seite Liste von Küchengeräten ergänzen und dazu einen Beitrag über den Lebensmittelzerkleinerer schreiben. Ohne Bild geht natürlich nicht. Habe die Bilder aus der Bedienungsanleitung eingescannt und hochgeladen. Die Menschen, die 1987 den Lebensmittelzerkleinerer hergestellt hatten, leben zum Teil nicht mehr und werden auch keine Beanstandungen haben. Woher kann ich dafür eine Lizenz erhalten?

@Copilot 58: Tja, das wird wohl nicht so einfach. Einfach annehmen, dass der Inhaber der Urheberrechte schon nichts dagegen haben wird geht auf keinen Fall. Das Bild ist auch sicher noch nicht alt genug als dass die Urheberrechte abgelaufen sein könnten. Prinzipiell gibt es da drei Möglichkeiten:
  1. Die langwierige Suche nach dem Inhaber der Urheberrechte an dem Bild auf sich nehmen und um eine Freigabe bitten (Commons:OTRS) – was realistisch betrachtet wahrscheinlich vergebens wäre.
  2. Irgendwie ohne Bild klarkommen
  3. Einen Lebensmittelzerkleinerer auftreiben und selber ein Bild davon machen (da es sich um ein Gebrauchsobjekt handelt wäre das urheberrechtlich gesehen wohl unbedenklich)

Auch wenn du nicht weißt, wer das Urheberrecht innehat, irgendjemand hat es sicher, wenn das Bild von 1987 stammt - das Urheberrecht erlischt nach deutschem und österreichischem Recht 70 Jahre nach dem Tod des Autors (plus die Zeit bis zum nächsten Jahreswechsel), oder wenn es anonym veröffentlicht wurde, 70 Jahre nach der ersten Veröffentlichung, d.h. allerfrühestens 2058; und da ist das kompliziertere US-Recht, an das wir uns hier auch halten müssen, noch nicht berücksichtigt. "Werden schon keine Beanstandungen haben" ist hier kein erlaubtes Argument - entweder du suchst/machst ein Bild, das wir unter einer freien Lizenz verwenden können oder du machst den Urheber/Nutzungsrechtsinhaber des von dir hochgeladenen Fotos ausfindig und bittest ihn um eine Lizenz. darkweasel94 12:34, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Can someone confirm with me whether the UK has rights to use the Selling a Wife Image, originally by Thomas Rowlandson. I am enquring about rights of use in the UK for Thomas Rowlandsons 'selling a wife' image. The image will be printed on one of the pages of a soon to publish law book if this is available in the public domain.

I just want to ensure that there are no copyright issues with the image before we proceed any further, alternatively if you can direct me to the person who owns the rights for this image that would be greatly appreciated

Hello Bbjess20. First of all: I'm not a copyright lawyer, so I can't give you any legal advice. This is just my personal view on this.
  • The painting is from 1814 and was created by an artist who has been dead for more than 100 years, so the painting itself should be well out of copyright.
  • However, the copyright for the digital reproduction (scan or digital photograph) might become a problem. The general assumption here at Commons is, that a mere reproduction of such a painting is not copyrightable under US-law (see Commons:Reuse of PD-Art photographs). In the UK, however, things seem to be a bit different, depending on how much effort was put into the creation of the digital reproduction (see Commons:Reuse of PD-Art photographs#United Kingdom / UK). This specific digital reproduction, however, comes from the website of the Hermitage Museum: [3]. Scroll down a bit on that page and you'll find their Image Use Policy:
Unless otherwise noted, images this web site may be used for any purpose without prior permission.
Any material in the public domain found on this web site is not protected by copyright.
Hence, it seems that this specific digital reproduction of this artwork would be safe to use even in the UK. If in doubt, I'd suggest to use the contact form provided at the top right corner of their main page.

Copyright help regarding File:SUNY Oneonta Type Logo.png

I have recently updated the SUNY Oneonta logo on our wiki page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_University_of_New_York_at_Oneonta The logo filed says “The uploader did not provide sufficient information (a valid and suitable tag) on this media's copyright status.” I work in the web department here at SUNY Oneonta, and would like to get this image approved. SUNY Oneonta is a State College and we own the copyright on this image. question about using a graphic in my MS Thesis

Hi, I want to use this image in my thesis. I dont know how to cite it, because I dont know if I can use it.   • For starters: assuming you are in the U.S., in a Master's thesis there is a lot you can use on a fair use basis.
  • If you want to reproduce the image, appropriate crediting would be "Map created by Wikimedia Commons user Shannon1, based on public domain background layer from DEMIS Mapserver. Used under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license: terms at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en; the license permits free sharing and modification, but requires acknowledgment.
  • How to cite the image in a footnote will of course depend on the particular citation style mandated for theses at your university, but it will be something like "Wikimedia Commons user Shannon1, File:SanJoaquinRiverMap.jpg, originally uploaded 2010-01-30, last revised 2012-09-08, accessed online 2014-01-10 at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SanJoaquinRiverMap.jpg, Wikimedia Commons (Wikimedia Foundation).
  • Note that a credit and a citation are two different matters: in this case, assuming you are not simply using a fair use approach, reproduction requires that the license be mentioned. Footnote styles don't normally mention licensing issues. Watchlist

So, I'm positive that this is a simple question, but I can't figure it out to save my life. Is there a way to set a preference so that any uploaded files are automatically added to one's watchlist? As it is, if I add ten files, I can't find a way to make them part of my watchlist as I go. In your user preferences, in the section "watchlist", checking the box "Add pages I create and files I upload to my watchlist" should do it. From that description, I guess it adds not only the files you upload but also the other pages you create, so if you don't want them in your watchlist, you may have the opposite problem and may have to remove them individually from your watchlist. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:42, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

Copyright status

I see that this image File:Sir_ziauddin_speaking_at_AMU.jpg includes, visible in the image itself, the words "Collection   Time & Life Pictures". Did you associate an email address to your account? I cannot email it, so either you didn't do that, or you disabled email from other users. If you didn't give an email address in your preferences, there's nothing that can be done, except maybe directly asking the system administrators, but it is unlikely that they will do that. In that case it's probably easiest to just create a new account; User:Andee only made three contributions in 2006 so not much will be lost in your contribution history. British Museum II

Have there ever been any batch uploads from the British Museum collection? How were they done and by whom? Danny lost (talk) 22:50, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

No there has not. The BM online database has all photographs copyrighted the trustees of the museum and from my discussions in the past with management within the museum a mass release is unlikely to ever happen. Mainly the issue is not potentially willingness but the sheer amount of work it would take to check copyright and sourcing of the various photographs in the catalogue. In practice there is no problem with having events in the Museum or for individuals (such as myself) taking new photographs or videos of artefacts of interest (even those not normally on display) and releasing these to Commons. If you had a specific project in mind, this is a way of approaching it.
If you would like to talk with other volunteers, then en:WT:GLAM/BM is a good place to try. I'm speaking as someone who used to hold the relationship with the BM in the UK. --Fæ (talk) 23:15, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

PD works can always be migrated to Commons if they are the sort of works which Commons accepts. I am not sure what you are asking. Also sort of related, the British Library recently made a media donation to Flickr and much of what they put there could be migrated to Commons. I have the time and will, but not the technical knowledge to efficiently import PD work works from BM to Commons. If this was done before, I hope to copycat the effort. If not, I wonder where can I get an advice, and what is the site's policy in light of the special relationship with BM. I suggest you raise your questions or make a proposal at en:WT:GLAM/BM. Several of us volunteers in the UK have been working with the BM for the last 4 years. I could cobble a script together to mine the BM online catalogue for 2D works of the right age, however I would want to only do this as part of our ongoing excellent relations with the museum. Uploader has stated that this image was taken "by Austin's Only Paper photographer Kristin Hillery" on Flickr (see here); I checked the Flickr page and it says "some rights reserved" and it turns out the image is to be used for this website, then I checked the licensing and it's "Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs Creative Commons License" but I'm not sure if it applies to this specific image or not, as it was uploaded on Flickr also. You can however simply copy (with proper attribution and following license requirements) the images to another website for use.   • Even though Commons cannot host non-free images, you can still upload the image to a local project (in some circumstances) under fair use provisions. Check with the local project at either the 'Village Pump' or 'Help Desk' for the specificities; in the case of English Wikipedia the provisions are found at en:WP:NFCC. I hope this helps. Problems with subcategorizing Albuquerque images (Third time now!)

Can someone please help me?

I created the Flora of Albuquerque‎ and Animals of Albuquerque‎ subcategories, and placed all the images that were on the main Albuquerque page into those two subcats, but they're still showing up on the main Albuquerque cat page, even though I removed that main cat from each image.

I tried posting here in late November but nothing came of it and my post was archived. I then tried posting here again three weeks ago, and again, nothing. I also tried contacting the other editor responsible for the issue with the images and categories that I'm having, but I did not understand all the technical jargon she used to explain the problem, and after she stated that she fixed the problem, I replied that the problem was still occurring, and she dropped out of the discussion.

Can someone please help? Please don't bombard me with the technical jargon that was given in the prior discussion, because I don't understand all that. I just want to be able to place the images in the right categories, and I'm asking for people to help me out with this to help me fix that problem before this discussion is archived again. File:Cane cholla, with flower, Albuquerque.JPG, one of the images that used one of the templates in question, now uses Category:Elena Gallegos Picnic Area rather than Category:Albuquerque, New_Mexico, which is exactly the change agreed to last time you brought this up. A question about categorization

Anyway... fixing the categorization of several files (per COM:OVERCAT) of a new user, I've not well recognized what model of classic car is this one. I've categorized it as "Chevrolet" but, in retrospect, I'm no more sure (and I'm not so expert in cars). Could somebody recognize it? Hi, Posted this morning about having uploaded an image for Wiki Loves Monuments. Thanks, Liamdavies, for getting me to the map. When I look at my town, however, the photo of the monument I uploaded is not there -- the bridge appears as a historic site which still needs a photo. It does not appear that the map has been updated yet -- ??.   • I assume this is about File:AgStar.jpg. Looks like it uploaded successfully. I'm not sure what you are seeing that isn't as you want it, can you be more specific? Also, you really should go through the COM:OTRS process if you really intend to release copyrights on something like this: it would really help to send the OTRS team an email from your company email address so that it is clear you are in a position to release those rights, and are not just a random person claiming to release someone else's copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 23:45, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

  • I've moved the file, next time it will be easier and quicker to do as Jmabel suggests, and use Template:Rename. On an other note, the image licensing states the author has released it into the public domain and will send authorisation, please follow COM:OTRS. I have replaced the tag with OTRS pending. I just tried it, and although I eventually got a form to fill out, it took a long time to load and spewed a bunch of PHP errors at me. There's a notice at the top, stating "There is an unknown issue with CommonsHelper at the moment. If it doesn't work for you, please try its successor." That link is broken, but tools:~commonshelper2 seems to work just fine. We don't host any .doc files. There are two main reasons for this:

  • As far as I can tell, you've successfully reverted to the original file. There's no need to delete the intermediate versions. They take up the same amount of space on disk even if they are "deleted", it just means that the history is hidden. - Jmabel ! talk 18:10, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

Problem with Inkscape

You are using Inkscape flowed text, which isn't part of the SVG specification and doesn't work outside of Inkscape. In the Text menu there's a way to convert flowed text to standard SVG text. To create SVG text in the first place, just click on the canvas when creating it, rather than clicking and dragging. darkweasel94 17:49, 25 January 2014 (UTC)

How to use an image from a djvu file?

I'd like to use the fourth page of the File:Piotr Skarga - Żywoty Świętych Starego i Nowego Zakonu 1615.djvu as an illustration in an article about that book which I just wrote (see w:Żywoty świętych). Is it correct that you would like to extract the image file which is embedded in the djvu file? I think there is no good way to do this. See s:Help:DjVu_files#Image_extraction. Photo licensing question

Hello, I recently asked a Flickr user if he would change the licenses on a few of his photos to Creative Commons so they could be uploaded here. He said he would do so, but only if the CC license applied only on Wikipedia, so the photos couldn't be used elsewhere without his permission.

If he were to change them to CC licenses, and then immediately change them back to "All Rights Reserved" after I've uploaded them here, would that fulfill his goal? (In other words, would the CC license only apply on WP/Commons and nowhere else?) And is there a template I could add to the images to show that they're no longer under a CC license?   • I have no idea who MattheVanitas is or what he/she has to do with the case.
  • You were the uploader, and stated that the image is in the public domain. While it is possible that you were wrong about that, if the image is in the public domain there is no need for "permission".
  • You also seem to have uploaded a picture of a young woman over the logo. I have reverted to your original logo, which is what you describe in the information about the photo.
  • Given all of this, and what strikes me as a dubious legal threat to boot, I'm not particularly inclined to give this the speedy delete I might otherwise give it. It looks like the image has been nominated for deletion, but the nomination seems to have been made while the image of a young woman was in place. Well, the uploader was recently blocked on enwiki for making legal threats and subsequently unblocked when they retracted their statement, see their userpage on enwiki for details. They also seem to be closely affiliated with Nawab Faizunnesa Government Girls' High School as they have edited (and revert-warred) over the article extensively. I have transferred their only free file over to here because I think that looks legit enough, AGF and everything. Hello again. I need some advice from more experienced Commoners to help me in deciding what to do with this current image. Specifically, the first version as of 21:07, 18 August 2013 (direct link) in my opinion may possibly fail to fall under the threshold of originality so it might warrant RevDeletion. The current version has also been reduced from a higher quality version because it was, according to the uploader's summary, "With The permission of SAEINDIA Organisation to use low quality logo only". Also in my opinion the second version could fall under the threshold of originality, so I'm considering reverting to that version, but do we generally prefer to keep the higher quality version over the current one? Finally, the name might warrant renaming to a less ALLCAPS title to something more appropriate like "SAE India logo.jpg" since it's already linked to the organization's webpage on enwiki. I dont understand what is the problem with the picture I uploaded. It is a official public logo of a water polo team. It is aloved to be used as fair share unless its used in a bad way. I was asked alot of questions about what kind of licence exactly it is under. I have no idea. It is public share licence I guess sence that kind of things doesnt exist in Serbia. I did state I took it from the serbian wikipedia version of the team and also provided the name of the user who uploaded it first time. What I am trying to say is lets for the sake say I am to make a wiki page about Real Madrid football team. I dont own their logo still on the wiki page of that team there is a logo. You don't contact the copyright holder and ask them to use their work on a specific page. You contact them and ask them to release their work under whatever license that they choose. For their work to be uploaded to Commons, the license that they choose has to be one that allows anyone to use their work in modified or unmodified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes. (You could recommend {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} or {{Cc-by-3.0}}, for example.) If they agree to do that, the license is determined by whichever license they say they're willing to agree to, not by whether it's a logotype for a team or a record label. Most teams or companies aren't going to agree to release their logos under a free license, and unless it's below the threshold of originality required for copyright protection, then it's non-free content and you can't upload it to Commons. A few language editions of Wikipedia allow non-free content to be locally uploaded to that particular project under fair use provisions in a limited set of circumstances. Image deleted as a copy-vio

I had a photo I took deleted as a copyright violation. I received what appears to be a standard template with the following in bold "everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here". Your photo showed a poster. That poster is an artwork that is copyrighted by somebody. Publishing that photo is legally fine basically only if the copyright owner of the poster agrees.
There are a few exceptions to that rule, see COM:DM (basically, if you take a photo of some street scene and there's a small poster somewhere), and COM:FOP (basically, if the artwork is permanently installed in some public place, but posters typically are not "permanently installed", and in many countries that exception applies not to 2D works). Then copyright laws usually have a number of further exceptions intended for news reporting, but none of these are useful for us because (a) neither the WMF nor the Commons nor your publishing a photo here is "news reporting", and (b) more importantly, we want only media that are also free to copy by other people for any legal purpose, not just for news reporting.
If you should indeed have a written (e-mail is acceptable) permission of the copyright owner of the poster to publish your photo of their poster under a free license, you can use our COM:OTRS process to tell us so, and then we could restore the image.

Own pictures taken by someone else

Dear team of WikipediaCommons,

I am an actor and I would like to add pictures on the Wikipedia and Movies-Pages. Therefore I have some very interesting pictures that were taken with my camera/iPhone by someone else (because I need to be on the picture and don´t want to do "selfies"). So I asked these people to take these pictures but I am afraid that these pictures could be deleted after my upload. What do I have to care about while uploading those pictures?

You will need to get the photographer(s) to agree to publication under a license that allows anyone to use the photos in modified or unmodified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes, and the completed permission statement needs to be e-mailed to our permission archive. When uploading, you need to credit the photographer(s) as the author(s) and specify the license that they have chosen and add {{subst:OP}} to the file description page. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:21, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
Other solutions:
  1. You can also explain that you used the timer feature on your iPhone. Using another person as a free tripod (bipod?) avoids any issue of who pressed the shutter button.
  2. If you did not use a timer and if your friend/photographer is happy making a public declaration we can refer to (such as on Flickr or even a tweet) then you don't need to use OTRS.
  3. Your friend can set up a Commons account and upload the photos. The declaration is built into the upload wizard.

Mam brudnopis swej stony na Wikpedi "Seweryn L. Lewandowski" i pod tą samą nazwą zbiór zdjęć i dokumentów w Wikimedia Commons. Chciałem skasować kilka błędnie opisanych kopii i dodać swe zdjęcie oraz licencję udzieloną przez jgo autora. Problem polega na tym, że: po pierwsze nie wiem jak mogę edytować ten zbiór zdjęć aby wprowadzić konieczne korekty i po drugie nie mogę uruchomić Uplodawizard. I want to snip a small bit of a picture on a Wikipedia page to illustrate a point I am making on the discussion page of the same entry. I imagine that this is legitimate but can you confirm? The original presumably is there with full permission...

You may crop images that you find on Commons and upload the result to Commons provided that you comply with any licensing requirements (typically attributing the author and using the same license for the resulting work). Derivative FX is a useful tool for uploading such files. If, however, the image is hosted on a local Wikipedia project under a fair use rationale, you cannot upload the image or crops thereof to Commons. —LX (talk, contribs) 13:26, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
The only other caveat I'd give is that if a small portion of the image is something copyrighted that is included on a de minimis basis, you can't crop to that element and upload that. For example, if someone is wearing a t-shirt with a copyrighted logo, you couldn't crop to just the logo and upload that. Antonym of "historical"

Hi, I think I need the advice of a better speaker of English (preferably native) than myself for this. I would like to create a category for trams in Vienna of types that are still in operation now, i.e. the opposite of Category:Historical trams in Vienna. What is the best adjective to use as an antonym of "historical"? "Current trams"? "Contemporary trams"? "Non-historical trams"? Something entirely different? (I'm not a native speaker, but I've lived and studied in Australia and the United States for several years.) Contemporary has two distinct meanings. While it can be used to mean current or modern, it can also be used relative to a given period, person or occurrence. Without a modifier, it's unlikely to be misunderstood, but I would still avoid it on that basis. Of existing categories whose names start with "Contemporary", most deal with contemporary art. Current is less ambiguous, and there are a few categories whose names start with "Current". That said, there are not that many, and I think there is a reason for that. This type of category is notoriously difficult to keep up to date. Category:Current players of SU Agen, for example, was created two years ago and already appears to be completely outdated. We've made a conscious decision not to have a Category:Living people here on Commons for similar reasons. —LX (talk, contribs) 13:53, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
It is rare that new tram types come into use, or that the last tram of an old type falls into disuse. So it isn't particularly hard to keep that up to date - that needs a change once in about five to ten years, if at all, it's not like "current players of $sportsclub". However, I meanwhile have a different idea for organizing that category (basically by getting rid of Category:Vienna tram types), so I don't need this translation anymore. Time frame

Hi there, I just enrolled in this website. I am computer illiterate, but I'm in the process of learning. I am curious about the time frame listed. It wasn't any where close to the time of where I live and entered the information on the computer. It says I joined at 20:37. Where I live, it's only 12:54 right now. Just curious. According to Commons:Milestones#2014: 20M–, it was File:WEREFOX at Clubschiff - WAVES VIENNA 2013 09.jpg. Searching for specific type of media, such as clipart

As far as I can tell, there is no way to search for a specific type of media, such as clipart. Is that true? If that is the case, it would be very helpful to add that feature. To some extent, the tools CatScan2 and Quick Intersection can be used for this purpose - they allow you to filter one category by whether the files are also in another category (and allow also going through the subcategories until some level). This, of course, will only work if the files are well categorized. Otherwise, it might be simpler to just put "clipart" into the search field and see if you get something useful. Unfortunately, MediaWiki's search feature is better suited for encyclopedia articles than media files; I think developers are working on that though. darkweasel94 11:30, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

Copyright on the images of Nguyen Phan Chanh

Hello there

I have recently updated Nguyen Phan Chanh's wiki page (it was formerly a stub) and want to add a few examples of his work - although he has not been dead for seventy years (he died in the eighties) there are numerous images of his work on news web sites,, auction webites (Christies Hong Kong) and various Vietnamese and international gallery websites.


You have a number of 'stubs' for Vietnamese painters - and I would like to turn them into more informative pages, but you can't talk about artists without showing their work, much of which is on a variety of online galleries and therefore, surely ok re. copyright.

Why I'd like to update the Vietnamese art pages is because as an art graduate from the UK I studied painting with artists in Hanoi, and it is an amazing art scene, well worth recognition, that gets lost in the colonialist/tourist perception that Vietnam is a backward developing nations and the artisans are only capable of 'copying' not creating. Nguyen Phan Chanh is one of the earliest graduates of the French established art university, and he is one of many who produced unique and note-worthy work, and I would really like to be able to add to the pages to enable people to understand something about these artists and their achievements.

I work in a UK university, and am familiar with referencing and copyright, but the system for wikipedia doesn't seem to acknowledge that images may be from sites that have enabled them to be free - eg. Chanh's 'Game of squares' or 'the rice ssller'

Very much hope you can help me sort this out.

Hi Liz! Wikimedia Commons (this site) is a repository of free, educational media files used by the several hundred different language editions of Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. The free part is very important – it's a founding principle of Commons that we should only host content that can be used by anyone for any purpose. Commons simply cannot host non-free content, which includes most images found on the Internet. The fact that other sites choose to violate the copyright of the estates of recently deceased artists, negotiate exclusive licensing agreements with those estates, or rely on fair use provisions to use the work in a specific context does not make it any less impossible for Commons to host. The fact that other sites have published the images do not mean that they are free.
That said, I see that you are primarily active at English Wikipedia. You may be able to upload some non-free content locally to that project with reference to fair use provisions; see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. Template:Test4

Hi. I've noted a pair of edits into this template by an anon: I rollbacked the first edit and, about the second edit, I've fixed the documentation that must stay within the "noinclude" tag. User commented his/her edits saying Update this template to make it more obvious and also explained the change into the talk. Well, I don't know if a sort of poll or shared consensus by admins is required for this kind of templates. Assuming good faith and just for a technical issue I require, if possible, an opinion and a control of an admin. This is an important warning tmp, has a structure translated into several languages and is standardly harmonized with the others ({{Test1}}, {{Test2}}, {{Test3}}). For example test 1, 2 and 3, have been blocked from editing still 2010. A similar measure should also be applied to this one? Due to the importance of the template, I prefer to ask for an opinion. The template should be semiprotected to prevent anonymous editors who don't know what they're doing from messing with standardized, autotranslated templates. Such templates should not have English text hardcoded into the main template. —LX (talk, contribs) 00:01, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Deletion Request.

Hi there,

Last year I uploaded a few of my illustrations onto Wikimedia Commons. Since uploading the files have simply laid dormant and have not been used or viewed. I am currently exhibiting the works in a SW London gallery, and the works have been sold. Alongside, the sale of the physical works the new buyer will hold all remaining reproduction rights. They have requested that the image be removed from WikiMedia commons - I couldn't seem to find a deletion section on my profile or in FAQ's. Could you possibly inform me of how to do so?

Unfortunately, free licenses are not revocable, so you can't get the files deleted, unless for very special reasons (privacy concern, etc.). Regards, Yann (talk) 19:15, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Sorry to ask. May I use a painting reproduction of Sydney Long in my house? Sydney Long was born on New South Wales and was dead on 23 January 1955. Are their works copyright free?

Not totally sure what you mean when you say "can I use a painting... in my house", but if you mean can you upload it to Commons (and assuming I understand that Sydney Long was the painter, not the subject; it's the painter's death year that is relevant) then the answer is no. Funny thing is that if he'd died in 1954, it would be public domain. But Australian law changed at the end of that year, and this won't be public domain until 2025 (death year plus 70). - Jmabel ! talk 18:39, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
