Why can't people see my uploaded image?

I uploaded my first photo today. I can see it on my usual browser (Firefox), but not on other computers or other browsers. Does it have to be approved? Did someone delete it? How can I make it available for everyone to see? Here’s the URL

To me, the file description page displays the following:

The database did not find the text of a page that it should have found, named "File:Hands Around the God-Box 1994.JPG" (revision#: 56106378).

This is usually caused by following an outdated diff or history link to a page that has been deleted.

If this is not the case, you may have found a bug in the software. Please report this to an administrator, making note of the URL."

In edit history, there is just:

Choosing a license for published historic photos

I uploaded two photos to illustrate events in the history of William Cory and Son in Wikipedia's article about Cory Environmental. Each shows an incident that befell a Wm. Cory & Son ship over 100 years ago. I found no statement about either photo's copyright so I marked both files as license unknown. Is there a license that would be acceptable to keep these images on Wikimedia?

I would also like to add old ship photos that are between 70 and 100 years old and whose copyrights I have not managed to find out. Would this be more of a problem?

Parelboom problem

Dear helpdesk, last winter I made a photo of a sculpture and I uploaded it as 'Parelboom - Louise Schouwenberg (Apeldoorn).jpg'. But because winter photos are never so nice as summer ones, I decided to remake that photo and upload the newer version (as I do more often with pictures, and until now I had never a problem with that). But now something strange happened: my new version appeared, but automatically the old version was placed after my replacement. I doubted if I had erroneously uploaded the winter image from my hard disk, so I deleted that file completely from my computer and tried again. But again, the new version was automatically replaced by the old one. Then I renamed the file on my computer and tried again. Vainly. The file history grows longer and longer (with only two different versions of this image) but the old ('blue') version always stays on top. I hope someone can help me, or can fix this problem. Please remove the four latest versions, so that the second one (the 'green version') is shown as the actual one. Thanks in advance, Erik Wannee (talk) 17:22, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

After you upload a new version, don't forget to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes. (Mozilla: hold down Shift while clicking Reload or press Ctrl-Shift-R (Cmd-Shift-R on Apple Mac); IE: hold Ctrl while clicking Refresh, or press Ctrl-F5). mickit 18:08, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

I know about that caching. I use Firefox and hold down Shift during reload. I have uploaded more than 100 photos and replaced several ones. Except for this one, it always works. But it doesn't help for File:Parelboom - Louise Schouwenberg (Apeldoorn).jpg. Clearly, something else is going on. Today I tried again to upload the new (green) version of this picture. And again, the second last (wrong) version was replaced by the new good one, and the last (right) version was immediately replaced by the old wrong one. Every time that I try, the new picture is not loaded as the newest version but as the second newest version. Maybe someone else can try to revert and see if that is successfull? Even better would be if someone could remove the complete series of erroneous and identical uploads, except for the first two. Thanks in advance, Erik Wannee (talk) 10:23, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

I have permission to upload photos but don't know the procedure

I have been given permission to upload several photographs of the Singer Alison O'Donnell (Wikipedia article: Alison O'Donnell), by her. I recently created the article about her and have asked here via E-mail for some pictures to upload for the article, which she has given me. I explained to her the copyright issues with Wiki (to the best of my knowledge) and she recommended me to use two recent photos which she says she has got the photographer's permission to publish on Wiki.

So since both she (the subject of the photos) and the photographer, have given permission I assume that means I can upload these to the Commons and then use them on her article. However I don't really know the procedure to go through to confirm this, should I simply upload the picture and write an explanation of the permission in the image description? Which licensing form should I use?

Or do I need to have one of those formal permission documents? (can't remember what they're called).

Answering your questions: You need a complete permission from the copyright holder, likely the photographer. A permission for publication on Wikipedia is not enough, without the permission that anyone, not only Wikipedia, can reuse the photo anywhere, anytime for any purpose including commercial purposes you cant upload. You not need formal permission documents, but you are on the save side with using Commons:Email templates. With your upload you need to select the license specified by the copyright holder in the permission. Once you obtained a permission for reuse under a free license you should upload the picture with the right source and author (photographer) and license information and with a message that you obtained written permission and forwarded it to COM:OTRS. --Martin H. Ok let me get this straight, she gave me two photos, by two different photographers, who she says she got specific permission from, are you saying I would need E-mail permission from both photographers? Or just her Confirmation. I'll quote from some of her E-mails to me, so you can understand the situation; this was sent on the 26th of June in response to my request for photos and an explanation of Wiki copyright:

"I think we could use the photo I am enclosing here and not bother with other ones as it is complicated trying to sort out copyright for old pictures. Erik Antihierens was the photographer and it is a very recent picture, taken by a professional in Belgium. He has given his permission for me to use the photo for whatever purpose I might have in mind. I hope this is okay."

And this is from another E-mail sent yesterday (30th of June):

"I would really like to have one picture of me singing live in the Wikipedia entry. At a gig in Blackrock last weekend someone came along to take some photographs. As this can be regarded as recent and I am in regular contact with the photographer, who is a long-time fan of my music, any copyright issues should be easy to sort out. I told him why I wanted the picture. His name is Niall Reddy."

The problem is the "me" in given his permission for me to use the photo for whatever purpose. Permission must be given that anyone can reuse the file anywhere, anytime for any purpose. Subjects of photos, such as models or actors, often obtain an exclusive license so that they can use the photo in their portfolio. They however not obtain a license to sublicense the image or to grant others permission to reuse it. This requires communication with the photographer who still is the copyright holder and the photographers permission for a free license. See Commons:Email templates again, a possible free license to write into the placeholder field of that permission is the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License (summary). --Martin H. "Permission must be given that anyone can reuse the file anywhere, anytime for any purpose" I assume this was their agreement, she is aware of what is required for images on Wiki (I explained that to her and I know she read at least some of the copyright info pages here), so I can only assume that she has complete agreement with the photographers concerned. It's not like these are some sort of valuable pictures or something, just very normal photos, I very much doubt the photographers care where they're posted. I mean I don't think she went into a formal legal contract with them, but they have a verbal (or E-mail) agreement. It's complicated because some people think their rights are precious and must be protected. Commons has to respect that. There are licenses that only give away the rights that Commons needs, and there are other, simpler ones for people like me who aren't interested in rights. We just upload our own works and mark them as Public Domain, which is a free gift not only for all Wiki purposes but for all purposes with no restrictions on anyone. However, we cannot give away the rights of others, since those other people own them unless they make it clear that they have given up those rights. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:35, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Can someone give me an answer to this please? Do I need to send her one of those permission templates and then ask her to send them to the photographers as well? Yes, the fewer people involved, the simpler, especially if one of them is not familiar with the requirements. Most critical is that the photographer understand the concept of surrendering rights, and communicate clearly on this matter with the uploader who must in turn pass it along. The model is usually less a problem, unless somebody shows naughty body parts or naughty behavior or something else that makes different complications. Were this a New Yorker, I would go, snap a few pics, and upload them myself. Better to have a photographer who understands how to surrender rights, than one who understands how to make a good picture. Jim.henderson (talk) 22:06, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Strange fog

File:Hidaka Mountains ISS006-E-29797.jpg is quite "foggy" I reverted to better, less foggy version - but nothing changed. I reverted again and old versios is showed without fog - an new one with. I tried reverting for second time - and it happened againg. And again. So for - 5 times... What is wrong? Bulwersator (talk) 04:57, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Please do not revert again. We have this server problem for new file versions since quite a while. You can see the file size in the file history - currently the original version is on top.

Technical stuff aside: Why are you always reverting to the "improved" versions of someone disagrees? Commons:Avoid_overwriting_existing_files. Please upload the "improved version" under a new file name. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 05:07, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

At some point, you might have to COM:FAQ#PURGE to have the current version displayed.

Recently, there were some problems with thumbnailed versions, even if one purged.

same name, new file - but it does not show

A while ago I loaded up File:Katika - wir sind wien.festival der bezirke 2011 f.jpg. Today I added a few other pictures from the same concert and to keep them chronological I wanted to replace this file - keeping the name but using it for another picture (see: Category:Wir sind Wien.Festival der Bezirke (2011)). You can see my trying to do so in the file history. Something is wrong, or maybe it is just a problem with my cache (which I emptied)? The scaled version and the thumb in the file history as well as the thumb in the wikipedia article still show the old file, but the full size version is the new one. I use the the file's names for chronology sometimes (numeral '01', '02' or literal 'a', 'b') which is quite useful in the category view - especially if the names would otherwise be the same anyway (e.g. "Bandname_Venue_a.jpg", "..._b,jpg"). If I rename a picture I do check the uses in wikipedia. If necessary I do the approriate edits to fix any problems. --Tsui (talk) 15:46, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

images I uploaded

Hello, my question is as follows:

I uploaded some .png's and I've been told that are violating copyright law. I'm not intended to do so, the point is the images I'd upladed are images-captured I did, from a movie video source I own, for purposes to complete and illustrate info for that movie video on Wikipedia.

My intentions are not breaking the law, but to emphasize the info already on a page lacking of visual support;

If I well understood what you were trying to do, you uploaded a series of screen shots from a movie of which you own a copy. However, owning a copy doesn't pass any copyrights to you, and you can't relicense the work as you were doing here. In case you are the copyright holder of the original work, you may upload the files sending a permission to COM:OTRS, but I believe this is not the case here.-- Darwin ^Ahoy! 06:03, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Uploading a new version of a file does not replace the original file

Hello, I uploaded a new correct version of TimesRomanSp.svg file, but it did not replaced the wrong original file. So I uploaded it again, but the wrong original file (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TimesRomanSp.svg) is still not replaced. After my second upload of the same file, the new correct version appeared only in replaced file revisions, but the last version is still the wrong version. I cleared my web browser cache and tried using another web browser, but this does not help. So I uploaded the file one more time, but the result is the same - the wrong version is still not replaced and my correct version appears only in file revision history. I think there is a bug in Wikimedia Commons. Please, could you help me?--Kuyrebik (talk) 13:35, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

I have had this problem many times too (ok, that's not much help saying that). As an example : [1] (now it works fine). At the time I uploaded the newer version, I saw that the preview wasn't right, so I thought I made a mistake and uploaded again - like you did. Then I saw that the preview before the last version was suddenly ok, but not for the last version (both files are identical). I even tried changing computers to check and still saw the preview for an earlier version. I actually had to force a fixed size of the images in the WP article to get the correct picture. I had uploaded newer versions for many files that day and only one or two had that problem. I found that after some time (maybe one week) the preview became that of the current version. Next time please use the tool Commons:SVG_Check before uploading the svg file. Simple mistakes are usually not deleted; this would mean too much work for our admins if all mistakes need to be deleted. PDF file size limits

Since the image file to the right is not displayed, what is the file size limit for PDF files? If a file is too large to be displayed, why is there no warning before the upload proceeds? Can the limits be increased? There may be 100s, if not 1000s of USGS public domain maps of the United States that are available as large PDF files. It would be bothersome to have to convert all of them to jpg.--Ratzer (talk) 10:46, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

The general size limit is 100MB. Maybe thumbnail generation for PDFs is limited, but I don't think it's a size issue.

New version of file?

Hello. I uploaded a new version of File:Warriors Barnstar.png. After I did this, however, although the thumbnail image was correct, the file history thumbnail showed the old version, and usage on other wikis still showed the old image as well. I tried bypassing the cache, but it didn't change anything. After this, I tried uploading the new version over it again. The thumbnail was still correct, but the newest file history picture showed the old version, while the second entry showed the new upload. So, I reverted to the second entry, but when I did this, the file history showed the old version again, as the newest in the file history. Can someone help, please? Can someone explain to me what on earth happened here? I just wanted a redirect deleted. How is a redirect an exact duplicate of an image? How are there dozens upon dozens upon dozens of articles linked to that redirect when there were only four (or so) in the first place? Why did it have to become such a mess? An image was moved, the four links were updated manually and also by ComDelink, and I tagged the redirect for deletion (I have a housekeeping habit that I carry over from en.wikipedia). Apparently the redirect was tagged with speedy before the replacements occurred, that's why the bot tagged it when he should have ignored it for being a redirect. I don't know why it placed there so many articles, possibly those are transclusions, but I really don't know. If you would allow me the suggestion, I would say that there are much better areas to do housekeeping here than redirects. In the vast majority of the cases it is simply not worth the effort of deleting them, and the cases where it was in use (like this one) it should indeed be avoided, since it breaks file history in the wikipedias and other external sites that may be using the file.-- Darwin ^Ahoy! 07:40, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Thanks so much for your help. I suppose it wasn't so much housekeeping "in general" as it was merely following through with the file move, but once a redirect is created, I have no clue how to see what pages are linked to that redirect ("What links here" is doesn't show foreign wikis I guess—unless I'm misunderstanding something). Since it was a Featured Picture nomination, I completely forgot it gets transcluded (or something) to a million other language wikis. Determining an image category

I have uploaded two images that I'd like to use on a Wikipedia page about my company. One is our logo and the other is a photograph of our space. 1. Please sign your posts with ~~~~, which will be turned into a signature.
2. It would be very useful to link the images that you are talking about.
3. There is often a conflict of interest in working directly on a Wikipedia page about your own company (though, if someone else has started one, the images would certainly be welcome).
4. Since you don't indicate what the company is, I don't know if the logo is simple enough to fall under {{Textlogo}}, but if not we will need you to send an explicit COM:OTRS permission. In particular, Commons can only host the logo if you are genuinely willing to free-license it, not just give permission for it to be used on Wikipedia.
5. In general, to include an image File:FOO.jpg in a Wikipedia article, you just put [[File:FOO.jpg|thumb|caption, whatever that may be]] at the relevant place in the article. There are a few exceptions, such as placing images in certain templates.
6. To add a category to an image, place [[Category:CATEGORY NAME]] at the bottom of the description, for example [[Category:Logos of the United States]].

Hi, I am wanting to crop this pic to the subject to remove whoever the other person is for an infobox portrait style pic, when I try it won't allow me and throws up some copyright issues - something to do with the way the templates are laid out and its shows conflicting unidentified licenses, grude online or something the name of the website the pic came from. I know about those. I'm asking about all upload images even the ones people uploaded a new version over. Like I originally uploaded File:Queen Kapiolani sitting on throne.jpg but I asked another user to fix it up for me; so now it doesn't show up on my upload log. That upload does show up in your upload log, as should every other upload you've made, even if someone else has uploaded a version over it. The only uploads of yours that won't appear in your upload log are those that have been deleted. (And even those can be seen by admins.) However, the upload log does not include thumbnails of the images themselves. The gallery at toolserver does not show uploads that have been superseded. So I don't know if there is a way to show all your uploads, including superseded ones, in a way that includes thumbnails of the images. —Angr 15:26, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

Thumbnail does not update

I have reverted the file linked below, but the thumbnail would not update itself. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Map_Pyeongchang-gun.PNG I've tried generating the thumbnail as shown on FAQ but was not successful. Hi Radical82, this is a known issue. You may refer to bugzilla:28613. Basically there is not much you can do to solve this problem - if need to use this image, try a new size, say, 401px may solve the issue by forcing the server to generate a new thumbnail. --Ben.MQ (talk) 18:57, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Are either of these two photos safe to upload?

I took these two photos, one of a Nintendo 3DS[2], and the other a row of CD-i ("Compact Disc Interactive", or "Green Book standard") software[3]. Due to the nature of the pictures, I am not certain if either of them are allowed, or if they violate the copyright rules. Anyone willing to give me advice? Query about the copyright of images uploaded to commons

Hi, Please can someone tell me what the policy is regarding the copyright of my images if I upload them to wikimedia commons. More specifically, I want to know if I upload a small file such as a 300kb jpg, do I retain the copyright over the larger image which is not on wiki, or does someone have the right to demand it as it has become open source? How do I change licensing info?

I uploaded a photo (first time). Wasn't exactly sure how to do it. Then I checked around your policies. So I need to change the licensing info for the following photo:

Shape magazine owns the copyrights to the photo and I want the info to change to reflect that. Also I was looking around and I noticed some celebrity photos have a personality rights warning. Should I include that also (see below)?

Before you worry about personality rights, you need to worry about copyright. If Shape magazine owns the copyrights, then it's up to them whether they want to release it under a free license that meets our requirements. Licencing query

I have in my possession a good quality black and white photograph of a British World War One Victoria Cross recipient, taken in 1916 whilst on leave at a local photographers studio in Manchester, which no longer exists. The person died in 1960 and there is no other known photograph of the person available. Is it permissable for this to be uploaded and if so under what licence? I believe that without knowing when the photographer died, there is no way to determine copyright status, which is what Commons would need. Death date of the subject and existence of other known photographs are not relevant. If you need this for a Wikipedia article on one of the Wikipedias that accepts non-free use justifications (e.g. the English-language Wikipedia) you might consider uploading it there and providing such a justification. - Jmabel ! talk 01:01, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

linking and categorizing images

Categorization Bot just told me that none of my uploaded images is categorized. But for all my recent ones I copied the four categories from the entry they belong in, just created by me: Spa Green Estate. Why did Wikipedia categories not work in Wikimedia? Can I upload these files?

Hi All,

I am an intern working at a telecommunication tower company in South Florida. I have been tasked with creating a Wikipedia page for the company and would like to upload the company's logo as well as a few photos of towers we have around the country. I have been granted permission to use the files by the Director of Marketing at the company who pulled the the logo and photographs from her own computer. The photos of towers were taken by traveling company employees and uploaded to the company intranet.

Even after reading the Wikipedia tutorials, I am still extremely confused with how to gain permission to upload these files as well as how to cite the sources. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi BAO8888. Before you write a Wikipedia article, you should probably read their conflict of interest guidelines, as your being an employee is certainly a conflict of interest. As for the images, the company logo could be uploaded to wikipedia under fair use rules, alternatively get the director of marketing to send an email to our OTRS team to say they release the logo under a free licence knowing that this entails anyone can use it for any purpose, including commercial ones and creating derivative works. The photographs of towers would have to be via OTRS, as the photographers would hold copyright to the images, unless they specifically gave copyright to the company. It might just be easier to see if someone else has taken photos of your towers under a free licence on flickr. -mattbuck (Talk) 19:00, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

New version of the file does not take effect

Hi, I've cropped the file Ruslana in Romania 2011.jpg. My changes were not reverted by anyone and has taken effect here on Commons as well as on the file pages on Wikipedias (for example, en:File:Ruslana in Romania 2011.jpg. However, they did not take effect on any articles. There is still old version of the photo. For example, on en:Ruslana.

I cleaned my cache many times, tried different browser and even different computer and asked my friends to try it on their computers and they were experiencing the same problem, so this is not classic thing caused by not cleaned cache. Nuthatch images

We realised that two nuthatch images File:SittaWhiteheadi.svg and File:SittaLedanti.svg each actually represented the other species. I tried earlier today to remedy this without losing the links on the wikipedias by moving SittaLedanti to File:SittaTemp.svg, intending to then move SittaWhiteheadi to SittaLedanti, and finally SittaTemp to SittaWhiteheadi.

I hadn't realised that, unlike enWikipedia, you can't move over a redirect, or prevent a redirect being created, and I couldn't seem to retrace my actions either. Can anyone sort out this botch for me? Thanks in advance Jimfbleak (talk) 12:01, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

I made a "reset" back to the starting position. All redirects deleted. So try again if there is something required to rename. But please do as follow:

• first correct the description. At the moment (in the starting postion) the description fits to the filename and the need for rename isnt obvious. The first step must be to correct the description so that it becomes obvious why a rename was required.
• move the file
• replace all usage, if the previous filename was too misleading nominate the redirect for speedydeletion with {{speedydeletion|misleading redirect}} or something like that.

A notable has requested my photo of him be taken down

Steve Epting was dissatisfied with the photo I took of him, and requested it be taken down. I have no problem with this, since someone put a different one in his Wikipedia article back in October, but when I contacted Maggie Dennis, my Wikimedia Foundation contact, she said that unless he had a compelling legal reason for this (Epting conceded that he did not), it would be better to begin a discussion here on the Commons. I hope this is the right place, but if not, let me know. Ms. Dennis also said, "From what I understand you'll have better odds of getting it removed if you can get them to send you a higher resolution photograph than the one you've already uploaded." Thanks, Rillke! To answer your questions... I, the great-grandson of the subject and owner of the physical photo, posted the digital scan of this photograph. An official U.S. Army photographer, working for the United States Federal Government, took the photograph (all documented and released on the reverse side of the photo).

images and needed help in general.

Greetings, This is my first article and I am having some difficulties. In basic do all images need to be uploaded in this way? (Wikipedia Commons) thumbnails in particular. And, is there a template that I can use for my over all page, or even the gallery of photos portion of it. I am trying to construct a page similar to the Henry Moore/ Sculptor example and inspiration. Thank you, any and all help is very truly appreciated. OGG metadata

Problem with djvu file

I recently uploaded a djvu file, , and have run into a serious problem. The file displays just an icon and a Wikisource index file can't locate it (s:Index:Federal Cases, Volume 28.djvu). I can download a copy of the file from the Wikimedia Commons page, however, and it does not appear to be corrupted. I uploaded a clean copy just in case it had become corrupted, but that did not fix it. Ideas? RJC (talk) 21:15, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

need help deleting or editing commons materials

Hi. I contributed four items to the commons. Then I realized I need to revise two of them for the following reason: they aren't quite copyright free, but I see there is a more correct status than the one I used and I'd like to either change it or delete them and redo-. Then, in this one (and all four, actually) I screwed up the category--I should have typed a category, hit "add" typed another one--not just typed them all and hit "add" at the end. Duh.

Upload of files takes endless time - or doesn't work. Is it the firewall? How to find out?

However, the upload starts but doesn't come to an end (repeatedly). Does anybody have an idea why I have this problem? Can it be the firewall?

USER Kaman Awet Malok should be deleted

Kaman Awet Malok has engaged in self-promote on the English Wikipedia and his account is being considered for deletion there. He is doing the same on the Wikimedia commons at this location http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Kaman_Awet_Malok . Mr. Marlok is/has been making fraudulent claims to the intellectual property of others. His claim to have made the the Lost Boys of Sudan is bogus furthermore he has no hand in the making of the documentary in any role. Please delete his Website which you are at present hosting. He has made these same claims on the English Wikipedia. He has made other claims that he was an actor on the Bold and the Beautiful. All these are fanciful claims which have no merit. Has has not contributed to the Wikicommons save uploading his own profile picture nor has he contributed to the Wikipedia. Rather he has chosen these sites to "squat". What communication is appropriate for permission?

I am new writing for Wiki, and can use help with copyright pertaining to a photograph. Giro720 has, rightly, asked that I send in permission from the copyright holder of the photograph.

What would permission look like? Is it a simple email? I do have a website reference for the photographer who has given permission to use the photo in Commons.

Uploading 100+ files from my my harddisc

I would like to upload 100+ new files (all into Category:Otto_von_Habsburg_funeral_procession). They are on my harddisc, not stored anywhere on a server, named sequential ("name_001.jpg", "name_002.jpg" etc.) and all have the same decription (some details like additional categories, GIS-data etc. would be changed by me manually afterwards). • If they are literally named "name_001.jpg" etc., you should first give them mnemonic names (e.g. "Otto von Habsburg funeral procession 001.jpg" etc.); you can then use the Commonist to upload. Jmabel ! talk 20:44, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

Of course the names are more meaningful than just "name" (it most propably will be "Otto_Habsburg-Lothringen_Kondukt_XXX.jpg"). From "Yellow Pages" I'm guessing this is United States. Probably OK, because works from that date would have had to have the copyright renewed, and if the company died just after that it's unlikely anyone renewed the copyright. But because it is not clear from your description what exactly was copyrightable and who held the copyright, it's hard to say for sure. It's an ad for the a detective agency from the December, 1959 New Orleans LA telephone directory. There is no photo art, no drawings; all text. per the reuse information at that site it is not ok, commercial reuse is prohibited. Thats unfree but we require freedom, see Commons:PS#Non-allowable_licence_terms. The only chance for individual images from that collection to be free is that the copyright holder release them under a free license or that the file was (verifiably) created by one of the federal agencies. "what links here" when only non English versions of the page link here

"What links here" only works when the English version of the page links here. I would like to see what pages link to {{French:Of}} and I know that there are many pages that do through {{Name}}. See the source code of Sandbox 4. "I get a link to /fr with my languaeg setting is fr and to /de if it is de." ← that is intentional. The page links to /fr /en and /de. But according to Special:WhatLinksHere (my de and en links above) Sandbox4 only links to /de.

Help with uploading a cropped copy

Use http://toolserver.org/~luxo/derivativeFX (per Commons:Avoid_overwriting_existing_files). Usually I would say such a minor crop of useless framing could be removed and the cropped version uploaded as a new file version (the same name). But this image probably could also benefit from other digital enhancements and there could be several versions which will all be based on the original. Long story short: upload under a new name using derivativeFX. Move or deletion?

Please see File:Jamison Square, Portland 2007. I tried to upload an image from Flickr using a tool but forgot to include ".jpg" in the file name. Now there is a page with no file included. Could someone either move this page to include the file extension, or just delete the page so that I can re-upload the file? If there is a better way to request assistance, feel free to let me know for future reference. New upload wizard: Works derived from other Commons files

The old upload wizard had a separate designation for new files derived from other Commons files. The new wizard does not seem to have that feature. IPTC Information

Hi, I'm wondering why commons only shows the EXIF information and not in addition the IPTC and XMP information. I think it would even be worthwhile to extract the tags and descriptions contained therein via a bot an augment the description visible in the info-box below the picture. I need opinions on which of two photos is better

Is there a place on the Commons where I can invite people with an interest in comparative photography to participate in a discussion in which they can opine which photograph they think is better for the Infobox photo of a Wikipedia article? I've already sent out invites on Wikipedia, but often, few people respond to my inquiries, so I thinking that maybe asking people who like to make judgments on this sort of thing might increase the turnout. Old photograph

How can I upload an image of a 150 year old photo taken by a man who is dead for over 100 years, but own by someone else on a website that exhibits old photographs?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 03:46, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Owning a copy of a photo is a completely separate matter from owning rights. Pretty much anything photographed by someone dead for a century is public domain (with a possible exception in some countries if it was held privately for most of that century and published only recently). Physically, if it is on another website, you'd need to download to your machine, then upload to Commons, and when you upload you should indicate the source from which you got the photo. - Jmabel ! talk 05:40, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

File name changing

Hi, admins. Would ya please fix the imagename in two of my older uploads:

• File:Wadi Zalib 02.jpg should be File:Wadi Salib 02.jpg
• File:Wadi Zalib.jpg should be File:Wadi Salib 03.jpg

As you can see there currently is no file on Commons baring the requested names.

If required, I will take responsibility to go over all places across Wikipedia where these files are embedded & manually update their names accordingly as you perform the change.

I have renamed them (usually it is done by someone in a day or so - no need for help desk as the files to be renamed are in a special category). Image upload: detail of a user manual

I have a .jpg image(photo being my work) that I wish to upload. It shows a portion of a Microsoft user manual cover,"Discovering Microsoft Word 2000" which I intend to put on the article "invisible ink" in Wikipedia. It clearly states on the back of the manual cover "A heat-sensitive security strip is interwoven into the top of the manual cover, Its authenticity can be verified by rubbing the strip to reveal the word "GENUINE." ". So, essentially this illustrates an application of invisible ink in the consumer world. I heated the strip to reveal it,then took the shot using a magnifying glass. Can you see any problem ('fair use', copyright or the like)in usage of the the image mentioned? My understanding is that it is probably okay to upload , as the image is of a product manual that is no longer current and the detail is of no more than 10% of the cover. If this was some image ,for example, of a current newspaper or magazine cover then I'm sure that is not okay to upload for legal reasons, unless it's perhaps a small part of the camera's field of view e.g. a news-stand or such. The fact that it's not current is of no significance here. To be honest, though, we'd have to see the image to say for sure. If it's nothing more than short text, then you could tag it with {{PD-ineligible}}. Otherwise, I'd suggest just uploading it and then asking for additional input once we can see what it is. They are not obviously inconsistent. The relation between measurement in US dollars and constant market prices (that is, accounting for inflation) is not a simple one. Downloading images

I'm extremely new to this website. I have been looking for an image of a library interior to use as a subject for a gift. Specifically I wish to have the image used in a wooden jigsaw puzzle. I found the image I was looking for which, according to this site is free to the public. The problem was I couldn't download the image so I can send it to the puzzle makers. The instructions to use the images were not very clear. I tried to follow them, but nothing resulted. If this is not possible then I will have to find another site. The puzzle makers require specific pixel size. I don't even know if the image posted will be usable, but I would like to try. If anyone can assist then I would appreciate the help. The image I'm interested in was of the Strahov Monastery Theological Library. Thanks, in advance for any help that can be given.

I uploaded File:Don.Brash.jpg today and some faceless/nameless bot tells me I didn't give a valid "license" (sic). OK, so I tried to amend the file, but can't find HOW to do it among the voluminous screeds of do's and don'ts and whys and wherefores. So, how? Regarding your upload form problems: could you copy the URl / address in your browser'S address bar of the form you get to and paste here? And describe how the form usually looks like.

I would like to upload the photo of Anders Behring Breivik arriving at his arraignment hearing (the close-up with Breivik in a red shirt0 as seen at the top of this page (sorry, could not get a direct link on account of the page formatting):

But I'm having trouble determining whether this photo meets commons licensing standards. It certainly qualifies for fair use, but of course that's not sufficient. Can anyone make a case for it being public domain under U.S. or Norwegian standards? either would work as the photo was taken in Norway.

Failing that, is there any other valid licensing under which I can upload the image? We have a few free-use images of Breivik already, but they are not really appropriate to the tone of the articles we need them for. Thanks in advance. Snow (talk) 13:47, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

En Puebla, la Educación Media Superior ha tenido cambios importantes, esta modalidad en el sistema educativo se plantea de acuerdo a las necesidades que el Estado requiere, promoviendo habilidades y saberes que los estudiantes necesitan para su desarrollo y les permita integrarse a la sociedad ya sea de manera laboral o profesional. En el estado de Puebla, como ya se mencionó, la Educación Media se remonta al año de 1578 cuando el cabildo de la ciudad encomienda a los jesuitas la fundación de una institución educativa, estableciéndose el Colegio del Espíritu Santo. Sin embargo, a la expulsión de los jesuitas de la Nueva España, sus colegios e instituciones sobreviven hasta 1790 cuando el obispo Francisco Fabián y Fuero los constituye en el Real Colegio Carolino, conservando este nombre hasta 1820, fecha en la que retornan los jesuitas y a este misma institución le llaman Real Colegio del Espíritu Santo, de San Jerónimo y San Ignacio de la Compañía de Jesús.1 Para este periodo y ante la expulsión de los jesuitas, las escuelas están en manos de particulares. Durante el mandato de Iturbide el mismo organismo educativo es nombrado Colegio Imperial y es cuando México se constituye en República que le llaman Colegio del Estado, nombre que conservó hasta 1937 al constituirse como Universidad de Puebla.2

Is 212.35MB too big of a file size for a jpg image? Do you guys have a file size limit?

Go ahead and blast me if this is just completely obvious... but I read over everything and I don't believe it was covered. I write songs and music which I put on my YouTube Channel and Facebook for subscribers to listen to and who know maybe a record producer or publishing company. (I know... go buy a lottery ticket - my odds are better) Anyway... I hate just putting a picture of me there static during the songs. So, I joined I-Stock and pay for pictures that go along with the words, feelings or message of the songs I write. So they are sort of story telling to the music. BUT... I Stock is expensive, especially for something that I'm not making money by putting on YouTube. It's all out there for free. Obviously "if" someone did like me or my song and wanted to pay me for it, that's for the song - not the little video I put up to go along with it. As a matter of fact, "if" someone did like my songs, I'm sure the first part of the deal would be that I would "have" to remove all of my videos/songs from YouTube so the companies could do their own thing. So I'm rambling... so to the point already. "Can" I upload images and video clips from Wikimedia Commons to use in my videos on YouTube without any sort of penalties, lawsuits, or loss of my own copyrights for my songs? This should be a short answer... either "Yes" I can do that, or "No" you idiot!

If you stick to public domain images, yes. Otherwise, it will be difficult to conform to the licenses, though it could be done (but there's no short explanation of that). - Jmabel ! talk 15:41, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Untitled section

Hi, there. I have uploades images created by myself, SNAPSHOTS of my desktop, to illustrate a page I have created about an operating system. The image reflects this system which creator team I AM part of. However, the picture was deleted by someone in Wikimedia... and it is not the first time. Check the dialog and please let's find some more COMMON SENSE action! If the problems is the description, write to the person before going deleting things! We don't have all week to work in the pages we create to come back everyday and see what the heck you have deleted because you thought was perhaps, maybe wrong!!!

           (My answer) Hey, this is getting more and more complicated!!?? I creae those pictures MYSELF (that's why is called "snapshot"!) and put that info when uploaded the images. Please, stop being more papists than the Pope. One thing is to take care of people's rights, fight piracy and so on. I love that. But use common sense to see what is each case! I know is partially my fault for not finding elsewhere to click and state my rights as composer of the images, but you can quickly see that some things are just rookies mistakes and not piracy! Or Wikimedia should close! You rather warn and EXPLAIN better what to do, before deleting stuff!

There is some margin between coming back everyday and coming back only four years later. From what the sysop answered to you back then, it seems that you requested the deletion of File:Poseidon Linux snapsh.JPG for being a duplicate of the file File:Poseidon Linux snapsh.jpg. Gescannte Formelgrafik

Liebe Helfer, ich bin Neuling und habe einige Grafikdateien im tif-Format hochgeladen: Die Dateien "Indophenin1.tif" und "Indophenin3.tif" erscheinen korrekt, und ich konnte sie in meinen Wikipedia-Beitrag "Indophenin-Reaktion" einbinden. Jedoch die Dateien "Indophenin2.tif" und "Indophenin2rot.tif" (gerade von mir zur Löschung vorgeschlagen) sind nicht sichtbar, obwohl ich sie auf dieselbe Weise erzeugt habe. Dasselbe gilt für meine neue Version "Indophenin2a.tif", die ich jetzt in meinen Artikel einfügen möchte. Woran liegt das? Bei tif- und png-Bildern sollte man die Auflösung nicht zu hoch setzen. Sonst werden keine kleinen Vorschaubilder erzeugt. Das ist bestimmt das Problem bei File:Indophenin2a.tif. -- RE rillke questions? 11:09, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Zu Rillkes völlig richtigen Ausführungen möchte ich noch ergänzen, dass man gerade solche Grafiken möglichst immer als SVG erstellen sollte. Dieses Format hat vielerlei Vorteile. Ich habe daher einmal die Vorlage "Convert to SVG" ergänzt. -- H005 11:23, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Who should be credited

I need help renaming File:George Henry Burgess, No. 1. View of Honolulu. From the harbor. (c. 1854, copy negative version).jpg and other similiar images. It seems they "Drawn on stone by G.H. Fuzzy copyright regulation

I have some questions about some the copyright regulation of images in the commons;

• Two images from Category:2010 Times Square car bombing attempt contain a large billboard for the 2010 Miranda Cosgrove album "Sparks Fly," as does news footage of the same area at the time did.
• Two of my images of Category:36th Street (IND Queens Boulevard Line) contain a billboard for the 2011 Kristen Wiig movie "Bridesmaids."
• This image of the Fordham Road (IND Concourse Line) contains a poster for the 2010 movie "Green Zone."

How do these comply with copyright laws, but other images such as those of statues and TV screenshots don't. ----DanTD (talk) 19:39, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Well, that's somewhat of a relief.
