Picture copyright and licensing question

In the near future I intend on creating a page on Wikipedia titled "List of The College of William & Mary buildings" (akin to the Dartmouth version of the same name). I was originally going to take all the pictures myself, but I found this wiki site on William & Mary's library system that has descriptions and (many) pictures of the buildings already. Since that website is itself a wiki, and therefore public domain, I want to know if it would be illegal to simply use the pictures and already-existing descriptions verbatim into the article I am going to create? I don't want to expend lots of time and energy into doing that if all the pics will eventually be taken down for some type of infringement. Can anyone help me out (and please post on my talk page). A wiki site is not necessarily public domain. Many of them are under a copyleft or a permissive free license (still not PD), and some are just “all rights reserved”. I cannot tell for sure what the status of this one is, though. --AVRS (talk) 23:31, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Ah I did not know that some were protected. If I were to investigate and (let's say) find out that this particular wiki had no particular rights over its content, would I therefore be allowed to literally copy/paste its text and use those pictures? Jrcla2 (talk) 23:46, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Reproducing a Flemish (Belgian) image from 1567

Hello,

I have written an article for the Danish Wikipedia on the Flemish artist Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder. I used an image also listed on the English Wikipedia, believing this to be no problem, as the image is over 400 years old (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Gheeraerts_brygge.jpg). Yet it's been flagged. The orginial source of the image is: http://www.kubrussel.ac.be/onderwijs/letterenwijs/tlk/secundair/gruuthuse/gruuthuse002.html

I am suppossed to ask permission to use the image but cannot seem to find any contact details for this purpose. Is it actually necessary for an image this old? How can I get about solving this problem?

"This media file does not have sufficient information on its copyright status. " - You can take care of that problem by placing the appropriate license tag on the image's page. In this case, {{PD-old}} would likely be the right tag. --J.smith (talk) 18:34, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Cannot find uploaded image

I am trying to load images then put them in articles. One type are NASA images. The other is a drawing that someone has given me permission to use by way of an email. The NASA image seemed to upload, but I can't find it. I hope I'm not too old to use this capability.

DornierX

In looking at the DornierX, none of my information seems to tell the specs of the plane. What was its wing span, and length? Why werent the engines in wing mounted to save drag? Did it have slots, and flaps to increase wing area lift when needed? Could it still be built? Are any real plans of it still available? Thanks e:quietulis2@gmail.com

project help

i need the blue prints for a FIAT 1100-D's 1089cc cylinder head. can someone please help me out. my project is to improve the engine and as a result my future rests on this

I'm afraid that the blueprints your asking for would likely be copyrighted and as such we would not be able to host them on our project. I know that there are publications that might have the information your looking for. Rename

Hi, what's the process for renaming an image? This picture of an Indian Rhinoceros is incorrectly labeled a Sumatran Rhino. Image:Sumatran rhinoceros.jpg People keep incorrectly sticking this in the Sumatran Rhino article, including on en.wiki where it's a featured article. Can we renamed this to Image:Indian Rhino Toronto Zoo or something, so that people stop putting it in the wrong articles? Thanks! --JayHenry (talk) 15:05, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Images can't exactly be renamed, but what you can do is reupload the image under the right name, and tag the old one with {{duplicate|new file name}} which will ensure it will get changed universally by a bot. Best wishes, How do you turn this on (talk) 15:21, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Does anyone know whether the Graphic Lab here can edit and improve sound files? If not, is there a "Lab" that does that?

Change image name

Hi, I mistakenly uploaded the name of Image:HMHS France.jpg as HMHS France. But I noticed that SS France was not owned by United Kingdom. lost with uploading nasa images

Hi, I'm new here. I edited a few articles and would like to add some pictures. One is from a friend who has given me permission by way of an email. Others are from NASA. Most of these images I have modified by cropping most of the picture away. I tried to upload the images. Everything seemed to go OK, but I can't find them. How do I change the name of the file I upload? When I give the source of the image (an internet site) do I give the site location or the page of the site? My images come from a page on www.msss.com, but the exact page has about 20 numbers and pages in addition?

I've read many pages of directions, but I do not understand what to do. I'm a senior citizen so maybe I will not be able to add pictures.

Perhaps they were deleted? You can look in your contributions to see if the uploads are there or not. It's not possible to change file names - you have to reupload and tag the old image for deletion. Sources need to be the exact page - it doesn't matter about the length of the URL. I hope this helps. If you need anymore help, please ask on my talk page. Upload problem

I have been trying to upload a picture without success. I am trying to insert it into a page for 'Aaron Fastove' and have been unable to do so. Where can I get help or an example of how to do this?

I want to create a Wikipedia entry on the organization I work with. I want to upload the logo, but it is copyrighted. Is there a way to accomplaish this?

Hello, first, you have to ensure that your organization is notable enough, otherwise your upload will be kind of useless... If it is notable, you have two choices, depending on the situation:
  1. 'You have the authorization of your organization to release it under a free license (as {{Attribution}} for example): follow Commons:OTRS.
  2. 'The file can’t be released under a free license: Commons cannot host your logo, you must upload it at en.wikipedia, invoking the fair use act. →Diti the penguin — 17:39, 5 December 2008 (UTC)


Username Re-Direct Problems

My username redirects to a different user. (BradP is my username, and if I click on it and it goes to BradPatrick) and I see this: (Redirected from User:BradP)

Anyone know how to affect a change to this re-direct?

Does the site allow more than one member to have the same username?

Hello. « BradP » was on some wikis the username of Brad Patrick, former counsel of the Wikimedia Foundation. His username on Wikimedia Commons was BradPatrick, so someone added a "redirection" from BradP to BradPatrick. I've removed this redirection. Upload video-tutorial + image license

1. I have thought about uploading a video tutorial about how to do certain things in the Linux based operating system Ubuntu. The videos are texted in swedish so they'll be of limited interest for people not able to read swedish, thou not entirely unintresting I think. The video will be embedded in the wiki on http://www.ubuntu-se.org but they are unable to host the files.

2. In one video the desktop wallpaper has this license, can you please say if it is okay to use....

  • Thank you for the answer, that video will not be uploaded, but I now hade two other questions regarding licenses

1. If a video has previously been "published" on Youtube, will that present any obstacle for uploading the same video to commons? Have Youtube applied som sort of license or rights to the video?

2. In a video several applications may be shown, and they may fall under different licenses, ie one GPL and another MPL. Is it possible, when uploading, to choose ONE license that is "restrictive" enough so none of the licenses of the shown applications will be deminished?

    Personal point of view: I think you cannot. The critter I use for determining whether a logo can be uploaded is the following: by using a standard font in Inkscape and modify paths, would I be able to design this logo in less than 5 minutes? If I have a picture off flickr under creative commons that I have edited where do I put it?

It was a screenshot from one of the Star Wars movies, so I deleted it as a copyvio. It's being used on en-wp as fair use, but Commons doesn't host "fair use" images. —Angr 07:18, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

who's made this map?

And while I'm at it... does anyone know who's the "real" author of maps like the one at the right? There are at the very least dozens of these (gray, with white outline of borders) on the Commons, seemingly all by different authors. That's not very likely! I suspect that there's some public domain map or software that's at the origin of all of this?... - I mean I'm happy to attribute the map to its author (I just exchanged some colors to mark yet another region for yet another Wikipedia article)... but it feels strange to take a random example of The Gray Maps and believe that the "author" named in that file actually originally made it. See Category:Maps of the world, there are a lot of maps there. I don't think, that there is only one original map, there's probably several ones. If you are really curious, check the category and see who made the originals. However, you will probably not be able to identify the creator of "your" map. Modifying image summary (author name)

I edit Wikipedia under a fictitious username (as recommended). I uploaded an accompanying image file to Commons using this fictitious name, which means that displaying the image summary details from within the Wikipedia entry shows the fictitious Author Name, rather than my true name.

What I would like to do now is to change the author name in the image file to my real name (i.e. the true Author Name), or request that the image file is deleted so that I can re-upload it with the correct details. Can you advise?

I suppose in future I should log in to Commons using my real name rather than my fictitious name - is that the normally suggested procedure? It is not recommended to use photographers identification in the file name. The file name should be descriptive of the image. Snowmanradio (talk) 13:09, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Many or even most users indicate in the summary the same name they use as username. If username is equal clear name, use clear name as author. If username is a nickname use nickname as author. I upload all my media under my user- equal nickname. -- Хрюша ?? 13:40, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
For practical purposes, photographers identification in the file name is of of no us to any viewer IMHO, given that all these details are available in the image description details. Snowmanradio (talk) 13:09, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
If you mean to change the description of the file, and not the file name, you can simply edit the page. To be sure your change is not reverted you can log in using the account that’s been used as the original upload, or write at the user page of the old account what your new account is (and vice-versa). Delete image

I uploaded a logo, believing I could use it. Then was told that I should remove it because of copy-right. I know it's important to remove immediately. How can I remove it from Wikipedia Commons?

I just spent 1 minute updating this image then THREE HOURS figuring out how to upload the changes, and when I finally do it, it tells me my account is too new. It's because of crap like this that Wikipedia sucks.

If i scan a picture from a book, wich does not have any reservations mentioned in it about copying or reproduction, and i mention the author/publisher with the picture, would it be refused by Commons?

Hi Hans, yes, those images are copyrighted by default. There are some exceptions (see e.g. Template:PD-US, Template:PD-US-no notice) to this, so it would really help us a lot if you would tell us about the book you are talking about. Appropriately attributing Photographers on website

I would like to use some of the photography on Wikimedia Commons but I am not entirely clear on how to correctly attribute the photographers.

Do I need to directly contact each of them? And, if so, how do I do that?

No need to contact them. Just make sure you credit them if they are published under CC-BY or GDFL. Anything released into the public domain, of course does not need crediting. – amicon 18:46, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

If that's the case, I think just mentioning the name is ok. Example "Credit: User Amicon at Wikimedia Commons." No link is necessary, I don't think. But I'm not entirely certain, this is just going off what I've seen. – amicon 20:54, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Making svg images of an illustration in copyrighted material

A svg file is text data stored in XML format, that will render into an image, thus it is information that cannot be copyrighted, but the render is an image so I claim copyright as a CC-BY. Now if I use inkspace to make an svg, by the simple method of importing a jpeg of the image, and on the layer above build up the SVG data. When satisfied that I have a true likeness, I delete the jpeg layer, flatten My image and save. Is there a residual copyright issue? If there is- how far does my image (or the instructions to create this image) have to differ from the original.Do I leave a ref. to the original, in the same way I would leave a ref to source book on :en:wiki? Whats the syntax to the citation?

Yes, you can't get around the copyright by just chaining the format of the data. There is no "sweat of the brow" recognition. See Commons:Derivative works for when they are ok and when it's not. --J.smith (talk) 00:58, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
Thx for the answer, I have no experience of US laws. The question I wish to investigate is whether an xml representation, of an authors visual representation of facts can be copyrighted- Section 106 doesn´t appear to address that- and the Commons:Derivative works addresses works of art rather than representation of fact. iIn the UK, I would ask is there any known case law? -ClemRutter (talk) 11:33, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure. I've often wondered the same thing. My rule of thumb is to evaluate SVGs based on what they look like and not to worry about the possible secondary copyrights. ~--J.smith (talk)

Retrieving info from "en wiki" when page there is deleted

I was just wondering if there is a way that I could get info for, say, Image:Anatomical-snuff-box.jpg, an image sourced from en: wiki in 2006, but none of the information was copied across to commons. You ask some en-admin. The image was derived from the equally deleted image en:Image:Hand.jpg, which had no source. Lupo 15:00, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Name of file in Polish

Re: Image:Dzioborozec abisynski Bucorvus abyssinicus RB1.jpg. I understand that this file name is in Polish, but I do not understand it. I have suggested a different name with {{rename needs confirmation|Bucorvus abyssinicus (female)-6.jpg|A better descriptive name}}, but it was removed. I think images shouldn’t be renamed because they are non-English, and that “female” is not perfect, because it is English, and Commons is supposed to be an international project. Also, renaming creates “deleted” duplicates, so it’s not good when the file name is not as bad as DSC0001. Also if there is no “equivalent” with a male bird, there is nothing to disambiguate against. Maybe creating two categories will be more useful, since there are 12 files. --AVRS (talk) 17:31, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Scanning Dover Facsimiles

Can I hang a supplementary question here: What is the status of images in books published by Dover Publications, New York. These books are often facsimile reproductions of 19th Century books. For example: Handbook of Ornament, by Franz Sales Meyer Lib Cong No. 57-14417. The Authors preface to the first edition says: Strictly speaking this is a book reissue of my collection of Ornamental Forms published in folio as Ornamentale ¨Formenlehre¨.(Carlsruhe March 1888). In 1892 it was in its Fourth Edition, with a few ´trifling´ corrections. Now it get interesting: This Dover edition, first published in 1957, is an unabridged and unaltered reproduction of the English translation of the last revised edition. (The one that contains the preface to the fourth edition: I presume. It was manufactured in the United States of America, and published in Canada by General Publishing Company, Ltd Toronto and In the United Kingdom by Constable and Company. So how do we tag it? It appears to have four dates: before 1888 (when the folio plates were first published in Germany), 1888,1892 and 1957, and four possible jurisdictions: US, UK, Germany and Canada? More information never hurts, so you can include all the information in the "source" section on the image description page. Assuming that the "trifling corrections" are amendments to the text, the earliest date of publication for the images is 1888, so that is the date that matters. This is clearly public domain. If you mark the first publication as Germany (1888), I don't think there will be any dispute. Franz Xaver Winterhalter - Auguste Lemoine

I am not sure how my internet search led me here but I need to know any information referenced above. I have a family heirloom, a print of Winterhalter's par A. Lemoine. It has been in my family for over a hundred years or more. The lithograph is entitled Princess Eugenie and the Ladies of her Court.

On the left bottom is copyright New york Graphic Society Inc, publishers Print F.Winterhalter and on the right bottom Lithograph par Aug. Lemoine.

I have no idea of the value of this print and need to know if I should insure it or not. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Take it to an art appraiser and get it evaluated. They appraiser would be equiped to tell you if it has any value and how much it should be insured for. Russian help

I've uploaded File:Sibirskai Surikov.jpg‎, scanned from a Russian volume. It has some English and French information, but is primarily Russian, and I can barely read the alphabet. I would appreciate it if some Russian speaker can look over the Russian I typed in, provide translations if necessary and corrections where necessary. Canadian Crown Copyright

File:Img medal xlg British Colombia Order.gif is licensed incorrectly. It's taken from en: wiki, and has "Canadian Crown Copyright", but uploader here put a GFDL on it. Does someone know where the Canadian Crown Copyright template is (if there is one), and/or what the file said on en:? (I couldn't find the "deleted image" page on en:). Text formatting in SVG graphic

I recently created and uploaded a diagram of an experimental procedure in biology (FRAP)I created the image in Adobe Illustrator then saved as SVG. It looks fine when I open the file by itself in a browser, but as it appears in the smaller format, the text is scrunched up and overlapping itself. It sort of seems that the spaces have been removed. Does anyone know how to fix this? You have a font and (I guess) a thumbnail embedded in the SVG file. Please remove them. Not sure if this is going to fix the problem, but you should use the fonts listed at this page linked from meta:SVG fonts, because they are free and most of them are probably supported by the server (the second is apparently obsolete, since the server has been switched to Ubuntu). --AVRS (talk) 21:37, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice. I'm not really sure how to implement it, though, as I'm pretty new to this and don't know much about the SVG format. I saw a reference elsewhere on this site to problems with Illustrator creating non-standard SVG images. How do I delete redundant images?

Because of the recent change in the way .gif files are shrunk, I am changing all of my .gif file uploads to identical .png files. How do I mark the old .gif files for deletion once this process is completed? HowardMorland (talk) 15:44, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Am I alowed to remove "no license" tags on images I uploaded?

I was notified that I didn't put a license on Oregon 2008 Measure 65.svg. I have now done so, and I want to know for future reference if I'm allowed to then remove the {{no license}} tag, or if that must remain so someone can confirm that the problem is fixed. Thanks. Need quick Flickr review for a file.

File:Bernard Madoff.JPG needs a quick flickr review. The image can be used on Wikipedia main page ITN section. The ITN section is currently seeing articles which do not have any image that can be seen as "freely available". Free Software licenses + Youtube-question

May I be so bold and ask two question in the same post?

I would like to upload av video-tutorial where free software i used. There are several applications shown in the video, and they may fall under different license, ie one is GPL and another is MPL. When uploading, can I choose _one_ license that won't deminishe any of the other licenses that may be present? If yes, what license would that be?

If I have previously uploaded the video-tutorial on Youtube, may I still upload the video to Commons? I have made the video myselgf but am wondering i Youtube now has some claims to it?

CC licensing question

If I know an image I've found on the Internet is licensed under CC-BY-SA, but not which version it's licensed under, do I have to find this out before I upload it? I can't find a generic CC-BY-SA license template. Athelwulf (talk) 06:45, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

How would you know it's under Cc-BY-SA without knowing what version it's under? There is no "generic" license - since they are legal documents they are very specific. However, if the date of the release it know it might be reasonable to assume it was whatever was current at that time. Your best bet would be to contact the owner for clarification. No Thumbnail for .SVG; Search fails

I uploaded an SVG file, File:Triosephosphate Isomerase DeltaG.svg 18 hours ago. No thumbnail is generated for this file. The only font used is Lucida Sans, which is on the list of supported fonts. I ran the file throught the online verifier, which says it is valid SVG 1.0. I suspect I've done something obvious that prevents the thumbnail from being generated. Also, when I search for the file, it isn't found. The license looks correct (I created the file myself). Would someone please take a look and see what I've missed? Help for duplicates

Could someone tell me what to do about the pages Rayleigh Wave, Picosecond Ultrasonics, and Surface acoustic wave, in which I have image duplication problems as outlined by this message?

This file is an exact duplicate of another file from the Wikimedia Commons. This media file may qualify for speedy deletion if it satisfies these conditions.

I did what I should and put my images on the Commons (for the benefit of all languages), and now I am told I am a bad person because there are duplicates. What is more the licence is now different for the two, but I am naturally confused as to how to assign the same licence. In fact if an Adminstrator is out there, I would like to keep my image description as it is, but get rid of the error message. And I haven't the foggiest how.   1. Where is the notification of the duplication problem?
  2. I only find the welcome message on your talk page which should be where warnings about upload problems are placed.
  3. The images in your contribution list only have the "needing categorization" information template and category added to them. Where is the notification of the license problems?

I'm an admin on the English Wikipedia and Femtoquake asked me for assistance. All the warning messages have been on the user's English user talk page. I was the one who suggested that the images should be uploaded to the Commons. I'm not sure what to do either, since the licenses and the description pages for the versions on the English Wikipedia and Commons are slightly different. I'm also blind, as it says on my user page, so I can't see the images, so I'm not too sure about deleting anything. I did make this edit - is that the correct procedure? Anyway, to see the problem, please go to each of the pages Rayleigh Wave, Picosecond Acoustics and Surface Acoustic Wave, and then double click on the colour images. You will find the image, and then you will see the warning. Much obliged if you could remove the warning, delete orphans and generally settle things down for me. I am a painter, and would like to make a painting from a photo found in Wiki Commons. I want to credit my sources in the painting title, for instance "Wiki_PhotoLocation_Photographer'sLastName" would be a title for a painting. Would this be considered a satisfactory/legal way of crediting my source?

I have tried to contact the photographer but I Googled him with no success.

Newcomer

Would like to upload some pictures from here [2], a source from the U.S. Government? (NIH, described as "Open-Access"). However, pictures have different credits. Would like to use 2 pictures:drinking water/carpet and mice. First picture is Photdisc, iStock Photo. Second is from staff/the journal itself. I am guessing only the second one would be uploadable? On the description of this image I found the comment "This work was re-made to be avoid the copyright."--could someone have a look how to correctly license the image? If it is really an image of Amala, the image must be at least from 1921 (the year Amala died)... but I don't know when it was first published nor who is supposed to be the photographer (Joseph Amrito Lal Singh?) and when that person died. So, yes, I'm having my doubts about the picture, and the license should be wrong either way (either it's PD or protected), but I would appreciate if someone could have said look. reprints of expired copyright

I've got a number of old travel logs, that are reprints of works that are over 100 years out of copyright. A couple of them are getting close to 200 years old. They are limited edition reprints, runs of a few hundred that were done in India. Basically, pretty rare stuff. I'd be interested in scanning some maps and maybe engraving out of them, but is this allowed? They do have a copyright notice in the front of the book, but all they have done is reprint it. Can it really be that the re-publishers have the right to copyright all the individual pictures, and maps, that they did nothing to create?Keithonearth (talk) 06:00, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

My photos from commons onto Flickr etc...

You can upload your photos wherever you like. They don't need to be the same license but if that is possible then it might be desirable to reduce confusion. The key thing that I'd encourage though is that you link from your userpage her to your Flickr (or other) profile and the other way round so that it is clear that the two accounts are held by the same person. Hello, I translated some formats in my native language (Romanian), but I was unable to add them to the lang subcats because they were protected. I added on both instances discussions on talk pages, but they seem to be ignored. I know they will eventually be added, but this is pretty discouraging for a new editor. Helping croping images

Hi, I am uploading an image taken by US Navy but I forget to crop those images I uploaded including:

If you want to crop them, download them to your computer and crop them with a image processing software such as Photoshop Elements. However I would suggest to leave them as they are as it adds information that is not in the description. If somebody wants to use an image he/she can crop the photo if he/she wants. Re-license question

I have encountered an image which was cropped from a {{PD-art}} or {{PD-old}} image and reuploaded with a {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-3.0}} ({{Self}}, {{GFDL}}, and {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}). My first instinct was to remove the newer license but I would rather not use instinct instead of understanding before doing this.

Can a {{PD}} image be re-licensed like this?

Subcategory nightmare

Sub-categorization is as simple as adding the parent category to the category page. Add [[Category:<parent category name>]] to the category page you want to be the subcategory and remove the parent category from the subcategory page. -- carol (talk) 03:00, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, Carol, I still feel unbelievably stupid here. To me, what you just wrote is that I should add something somewhere and then remove it. ??? Category:Jacob Truedson Demitz is supposed to be a subcategory to Category:Southerly Clubs Image Archives, but no matter what I try I get the opposite result. Can you fix this and then tell me exactly what you did (like I went to ___ and did this___, then I went to ___ and did this___)? ✓ Done, the time took for administrators to delete such tagged images depend of the administrators' availability. Though, since you wanted your files to be deleted immediately, it was the right thing to do. real newbee

Hi~ Sorry, I've been looking all over for how to do the simplest things, and can't find the help I need. I feel really ignorant... well, of course I am, or I wouldn't have to ask, but... gee. I started out finding a really cool map I need for homeschooling my grandchildren. I copied it, but I can't print it because it is impossible to read that small, that is, the size of regular paper. So, I need to contact the author/cartographer to find out how to make hardcopies of several of his maps. But though I found his talk page, I can't figure out how to talk. How do I leave him a message? If there is a button to click to add a comment, I can't find it. The newbee pages just talk about how to contribute, not how to contact Mr.Absurd. Hitting the discussion tab doesn't help. Yes, I did look through help pages, archives, and FAQ pages. If how to talk is there, I couldn't find it. If you can't or don't answer this kind of question, please point me to somebody who can, preferably directly to Mr.Absurd. Thank you, and thanks for Wikipedia, which I use at least once each day. Duplicate categories

How does one fix duplicate categories like this one

These are two different things. Dustin Hoffman is a gallery, while Category:Dustin_Hoffman is a category. In general, categories will always contain all images of a certain subject, while galleries will contain only a selection of images. --rimshottalk 12:46, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Problem with image display

Why can't you view this map by clicking onto the image file? If you display the image description page, it's fine for me, but by clicking onto the image file, I see only a few countries, but many others aren't displayed. Thanks, Ibn Battuta (talk) 00:29, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Style questions
