which tag to add if the category of the image is unkown?

Hello sir. i have been uploading some photo media from yesterday. I have taken some photos of some flowers. But i do not know the name of most of those flowers. Hence i am putting them under the category "flowers". I would like to know which tag i must add if i have to categorise it into a category where all the unkown category photos are kept.

Just like how photos without copyrights are tagged and kept aside.. the same way.

For unknown objects there is are the Category:Unidentified subjects and its child categories. In case of plants there is the Category:Unidentified plants. -- Cecil 16:45, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Public Domain Christian Songs

Does Wikimedia have a list of Public Domain Christian Songs that I may use in webcasting, and because they are Public Domain they are not subject to copywrite laws is that correct?

John

Probably here: Category:Christian music -- Cecil 20:42, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
Hi John,
It is true that public domain material is not subject to copyright. However please note that not all of our stuff is public domain, so you'll need to check the notice on each individual file. I also recommend doing a "sanity verification check" on any file you intend to use: look for source information and follow up any link provided, or try to otherwise verify that the material is indeed public domain. (e.g. if it is PD due to age, look for another website that says how old the material is.) cheers --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 10:58, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Help regarding small image

I found this small image on English Wikipedia: Image:Kit_body_orangehorizontal.png It is only used for soccer team articles and the file was unaccessable on the Swedish Wikipedia, so I uploaded it to Commons. The file information on the English Wikipedia says "Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts." Was I ever allowed to upload it to Commons? If so, how do I change the licensing information AFTER I've uploaded a file? /Kristnjov 19:56, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

  • Yes, you can upload it to the commons. To change the licensing information just click the edit button on the image page. However, I have already changed the licensing so you don't have to. --Digon3 talk 20:29, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Is this scalable (svg) wordmark copyrighted?

I produced a scalable wordmark of the logo of Bushnell, an American company. The wordmark is, in my opinion, Helvetica™ Ultra Compressed exactly (see Google search). This font, I assume, is copyrighted and not freely-licensed. I am confused as to whether my wordmark (which is "scalable" as an svg file) is copyrighted or not. I was reading w:WP:PD#Fonts, which indicates that the use of a copyrighted font is unrestricted, but that the scalable font is still copyrighted (as a computer program)... (doesn't help much)

My question, then, is: Is a wordmark using a copyrighted scalable typeface able to be in the public domain? Can it be uploaded to Commons? Thanks, Iamunknown 15:28, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

In researching a bit further, it is most likely OK but (as nearly always) it's possible someone could argue otherwise. I wasn't able to find any reference to court cases for something like this; in general the copyright protection on typefaces (in the U.S. particularly) is geared towards preventing others from selling competing fonts which are copies/conversions/deriviations of existing vector fonts. As long as fonts in the SVG/EPS/PDF are not embedded (and therefore extractable as a font file) I think it's OK. Certainly Bushnell should not have any copyright over the logo, as there is no original artwork in it.
In the U.S, "typefaces as typefaces" are not protectable under copyright. However there was a court ruling that vector font files qualify as "computer software" and can be copyrighted that way (the case involved someone converting the font to another format, somewhat transforming it, and selling it as a separate font). Bitmap representations of a font do not contain any of the point/vector/hinting/etc. information however (they are just a typeface) and are therefore not copyrightable.
It seems to me that using a font in documents or logos is a "use" of the font as a typeface and not a straightforward copy of the font (otherwise any PDF/SVG/EPS/Flash/etc. file which contains textual outlines is a potential problem). The safest would be to use a bitmap version of the logo; that would be PD-ineligible (or PD-textlogo). Next safest would be if the SVG does not contain any font information itself (i.e. just the text with reference to a font name), as the wikimedia software would have access to legal fonts and any bitmaps it generates are therefore also OK. The next safest would be to convert all text to outlines to ensure that there are no embedded fonts; much font information is lost this way and it is impossible to extract a working font from it, but since some vector information is preserved it may be a slight gray area. The next safest is "partially embedded fonts", where only the portions of the font necessary for the characters actually used in the document are embedded; this makes it impossible to extract an entire font but would make one easier to reconstruct. The worst (by far) is embedding entire fonts (which I think SVG does allow) as the entire usable font can be extracted in that case. I would avoid that entirely (which should happen regardless, as most fonts have settings which indicate the level of embedding allowed, and vector image software should respect those). I have run across several things like this document which indicate that using the partially embedded fonts option is a guard against copyright violations. Based on that, I think that converting fonts to outlines (which would just retain some outline info, and no hinting or other font information as even partially embedded fonts would contain) would be OK, provided that the person doing the conversion can legally use the font in question. Note that typefaces are copyrightable in Europe, so European logos which use custom typefaces (even bitmap versions) are likely problems there (though the PDF referenced above is from a UK site, so converting to outline or partial embedding may be a hedge against copyright violations with standard typefaces even in Europe). If anyone has any further information in this area though, it would be appreciated -- I've spent a couple days looking for info but probably missed some. Carl Lindberg 21:16, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

Time out on images

These two images are sitting in "incomplete deletion requests", but I can't get them to open or go to history/edit etc. Are they corrupted? Is this a known issue? Image:US Flag 13 stars – Betsy Ross.svg Image:Us flag large Betsy Ross.png Thanks, Deadstar (msg) 11:34, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

I had no problem to open them. Both show the same image (one is a bit larger). They show the same as Image:US 13 Star Betsy Ross Flag.svg and several other svg-Files. -- Cecil 13:19, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
Hm. Weird... are they up for deletion at all? is there anything wrong with the request? I can't open them (obviously)... Thanks for checking Cecil. Deadstar (msg) 13:23, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
Don't think that there is anything wrong with them. Only reason I could image is that maybe somebody tried a request because there are several svg-Files showing the same (just different names). -- Cecil 13:29, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
I'll let them be. Thanks for your help. Deadstar (msg) 13:32, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
One was an exact duplicate of Image:US flag 13 stars – Betsy Ross.svg, both uploaded by the same user. That user requested deletion of this one by using the Delete template instead of the Bad name template, which was incorrect as done that way it is an incomplete deletion request which is usually not noticed by anyone. I changed to the badname template since it is an exact duplicate of the original version of the other image, so it should now be deleted eventually. I think the PNG version was marked as a superseded version, which were sometimes deleted at the time but no longer, so that one should stay. Carl Lindberg 21:45, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

Images corrupted during upload

I came across something I have never experienced here before, with these two attempted uploads from User:Ulflarsen : Image:LTTE propaganda gathering Jaffna 2004.jpg and image:01 003.jpg. I first deleted them at his request, but had second thoughts thinking that it would be good to find out what went wrong here. He has successfully uploaded many images before, the only thing different now is that he's got a new laptop with Vista(!). I still can't understand how this kind of corruption can occur. Anyone seen this kind of thing before? Finn Rindahl 20:17, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Hm really weird indeed! I have never seen that either. What software does he use, I wonder? pfctdayelise (说什么?) 12:07, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Hi, I use Windows Vista, the pics have not been manipulated in any program, I just found them on an earlier disk I had and transferred them to Commons. This PC is new though, but I have successfully uploaded a pic from this, see below:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Image:Erling_Fossen_Norwegian_politician_from_Oslo_in_the_election_campaign_September_2007.jpg

-so why this happens, I have no idea... And the pic looks ok on my screen. I can however try to upload the same pic from another laptop (the pics are stored at an external harddrive), then we at least can isolate the problem and point to either the disk or the laptop. Dont think I have time for that before monday though. Ulflarsen 07:47, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

Delft

I have placed several photos of Delft with names like Delft Market, Delft Nootdorpse Plassen but when I search with the word Delft in "search" and give it a "go" I don't find them back. I have to search with the full name, e.g. Delft Market, to find them. What do I have to do to enter them in "Delft" in general?

primasz

Try searching for "Delft" or "Nootdorp". - Erik Baas 13:41, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
  • 1. If you put Delft in the in the search menu (leftside commons screen) and then click Go, you arrive at the Delft gallery page, which contains only a fraction of the images about Delft.
  • 2. You may try in the search menu Delft and click Search. This gives you a name list of all images containing the word Delft, there are about 550 of them. But then you should still have to know the name of the item.
  • 3. You may better try Category:Delft in the search menu and click Go. This will bring you at the category and subsequent subcategories you vcan run through to arrive at your pictures, but only if you have adequately categorised your images.
  • Also, if you have sufficently categorised your images, You may try catscan category:Delft, I have prepared the link for you: catscan, this gives about 250 images, you can scroll for visually searching your images. That implies, about 550-250 = 300 pictures of Delft have no category related to Delft... there is quite a classifying job not done
  • And finally, I should have started with that: you just click gallery on your user page, upper line. All your own images will then appear and you may scroll for visual search. Good luck Havang 21:03, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

More has to be explained, because your question is what to do about finding your pictures under Delft. You have to categorise your your items!!! Look up at some exemples of other users. Then return to category:Delft and copy the appropriate subcategory. Go to the image:your picture page, edit it, click on :category: down the commons screen of the editing page and paste the chosen category name. Or you just type Category:name of the category. if you are uploading more often, take some time to study categorisation. Good luck with that too.

License tag

I just uploaded several images under Category:PD-National Photo Company, and I noticed that the license tag is fairly new. Is everything in order there? I don't want to spend a bunch of time adding things, only to have them deleted. -Hit bull, win steak 01:12, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Looks fine according to [3]. Lupo 08:39, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I saw that too, but I wondered whether there was a policy page stating that "no known restrictions" was just as good as actual public domain status, or anything like that. -Hit bull, win steak 13:49, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
Don't know if that's written down somewhere on our policy pages, but current practice certainly is to interpret "no known restrictions" as PD. The LoC never says "this is PD", but their explanation of what the phrase means shows that it covers either PD works (copyright expired) or orphan works for which even the LoC people could not dig up any copyright owner. Lupo 14:43, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
OK, sounds good, thanks. -Hit bull, win steak 15:54, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
Template talk:PD-LOC talks a bit about this and might be of some guidance, but I'm not entirely sure which way to ultimately interpret the outcome of the discussion. LX (talk, contribs) 20:33, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I usually use Safari but I've just tried to view the sites with another browser and it worked well. It seems to be a Safari-specific problem – that unfortunately cannot be solved by cleaning the browser cache.--Schwelmer 21:39, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
The problem might be the ad-blocker: The image URI is http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ad/Schwelm_Lange_1836.jpg which contains "/ad/" so it might get blocked by your local browser. --Matt314 10:12, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

User account portability within WikiMedia

Public Domain permissions

I uploaded several photographs that were unpublished and originated before 1978. I used for "permissions" the code "PD-US-Pre1978". I received a message the files would be deleted because it did not contain a valid permission. What is the correct way to designate items not under copyright? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Lwhisper (talk • contribs) at 18:07, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

The problem is of pure form. The messages you got were generated by a bot that checks the presence of a license tag. You just have to add PD-US-pre1978 to your pictures. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 16:14, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
However, if they actually are previously unpublished, as you said, then PD-US-pre1978 does not apply. Such works are copyrighted until 70 years after the photographer died [4]. --Davepape 16:48, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

SVG help

I just tried making my first SVG image. An up-to-date range map for the Javan Rhinoceros. It looks great on my computer, but when I upload it to the commons a weird black box appears in one corner and all the text disappears. On my computer there's text and no black box. I used Inkscape. Here's my (almost) masterpiece: Image:Javan Rhino Range.svg Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? --JayHenry 06:31, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

The image appears the same in Firefox rendering as in MediaWiki, which suggests that the problem is with the file rather than MediaWiki. Did you save the file as a "plain" SVG rather than Inkscape SVG? Try opening the SVG in a text editor and look for anything relevant to the font. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 11:57, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Image rendering problem?

I just uploaded Image:Appalachian National Scenic Trail map 2005.10.png, but in all instances except when I'm viewing it at full resolution (including when I try to include it in a Wikipedia article) it appears as a large, blank box with the words "Error creating thumbnail: Invalid thumbnail parameters". Am I doing something wrong, or is this just an out-of-bounds image for the Wikimedia software? Werewombat 04:12, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

I'm wondering about the copyright of pictures from US state government sites, in absence of more detailed information. In particular, I'd like to use a picture of this page (this one). Source and Creator of Images

I'm confused about the notion of who created an image. I obtained permission from the copyright owner, Anjani Thomas, to use the images listed below under GNU Free Documentation License:

On uploading these photos, the message I received re both images was "I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well."

There is no URL for either photo since I didn't find them on a website, but simply asked Ms Thomas for an appropriate photo to which she held the copyright. She responded by sending the two photos indicated, both derived from the cover art of her CD (Blue Alert). She completed the standard Declaration of consent, which I have forwarded to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, indicating her agreement to "Dual Licenses: GDFL and CC-by-sa-2.5" (I also couldn't find a way to indicate the dual licenses from the dropdown menu)

I'd appreciate your help so that I can supply the needed information. Thanks DrHGuy 10:09, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

In this case, the creator is the photographer who took the picture. As for the source, you can mention “obtained from Anjani Thomas, who holds the copyright to the photo”. You should use ticketid to prove that you truly have permission. It's a bit tedious, but a lot of people claim permission when they have no right to, so it's best to mention it very clearly when you do have permission. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 16:23, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the information. I'll ask for the photographer's name. Re the source, I forwarded the email request and Declaration of consent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org last night but have not received a reply. Am I correct that in this case, I would use Otrs pending until I have a response? Thanks again. DrHGuy 18:10, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Image:Mauricio Ardila.jpg

Hello,

The uploading of pictures is new for me. I went on flickr.com to look for a pic of Mauricio Ardila en i found one on http://www.flickr.com/photos/gymrat/399556595/ . I have send a message to the author of the picture and I received following answer:

Dear Mark, Thank you for your interest in using the picture I took of Mauricio at the California tour. Yes, I'd love to contribute in sharing Mauricio's picture on Wikipedia as long as I get credit and link back to the picture. Cheers, Gymrat (Denise D. Huynh- USA)

So I uploaded the image (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Mauricio_Ardila.jpg). Strange enough I didn't made any references, although I thought I did. How can I change it now? And what do I have do to do afterwards? Under which license can I put it here? Kind greetings and thanks for your cooperation. Ernie 21:35, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

First of all, make sure the copyright holder of the work understands and agrees that in order to put the work on Commons, it has to be usable for any purpose, not just Wikipedia. The template your message suggests is the Attribution template. Click the "edit" tab at the top of the image page, quote the relevant part of the permission e-mail, and link to the flickr page like you did here. --Rat at WikiFur 07:21, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Contact that Flickr user again and tell him to choose the "CC-BY" license for this photo. Currently, the Flickr page displays "All rights reserved" and thus we cannot use this image. When he has done that, go to Image:Mauricio_Ardila.jpg, click "edit" at the top of the page and add the following:

Then click save. Lupo 07:31, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

And what if the photographer just want to get this pic used on wikipedia? Which license do I have to use then? Or isn't is possible then to put it on commons? And is there then a possibility to use it only on wikipedia? Ernie 15:54, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Wikipedia-only licenses are not allowed, neither here on the Commons nor at any Wikipedia. Lupo 17:36, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

How to show I have permission

Hi. When uploading an obviously commercial picture that I have the right to release under cc-by-sa licensing (as an authorized representative of the copyright holder) do I have to provide evidence of that in an email to OTRS somehow as I do at en:Wikipedia? Thanks -- 69.86.55.20 12:49, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Would be a good idea to do so. The e-mail address is permissions-commons AT wikimedia DOT org. Lupo 12:55, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Is there actually any difference between the various permissions email addresses? I know at least a few times I emailed permissions-en or just permissions, and the receiving OTRS folks modified commons images without saying anything about using a different email address. --AnonEMouse 13:42, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
There is a difference and different people read different groups. However, a number of people follow both permissions-en and permissions-commons and messages are also transferred from one group to another. Samulili 13:59, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Find an appropriate problem tag for speedy deletion, such as or (probably faster) Copyvio (and it's always good to explain the situation like you did here), or nominate the image for deletion by clicking "Nominate for deletion" in the toolbox on the image description page. I've deleted the image with reference to your message here. LX (talk, contribs) 18:13, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

How to use pictures

headline by D-Kuru, because of a missing headline

I uploaded 2 images to Wikipedia Commons that I would like to use in the Spanish article about CinemaScope, but I can't figure out how to transfer them to the article. Can anyone help me?

Please write me to Cinemascoper@aol.com

Thanks

--Gerardo P.

Hi Gerardo,
You can use them as if you would have uploaded the images on the spanish wikipedia.
Please note that your images may've been deleted, because their content have to tagged as Fair use (Which is not allowed on commons)

SVG problem

I uploaded a svg intended to replace Image:Cleveland Municipal Flag.svg. Bars appears on the actual image page but not when the image is inserted in an article. I've heard of the probelms with creating SVG's in Inkscape and uploading to commons but this image looks as it should when the code is used in an article. It could be just my computer, but I have no way of telling. --Dtbohrer 05:14, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

I don't see any bars on the current version. So I suspect you had an old cached copy showing up. Seems fine now. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 08:47, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Why is my picture not in the section I assigned it?

I uploaded a picture and it's under my contributions. However, when I search for it by file name or description, it does not come up. Why?

Hi User:Shannon247,
The search index does not update instantly. So sometimes it takes a few days or even a few weeks for your files to show up in search results. However I found your image by searching for "South Padre Island" just fine. It's also visible in Category:Cities in Texas. And I added it to the gallery South Padre Island, Texas (galleries have to be manually updated, ie. edit them separately).
Just so you know, it doesn't make sense to mark an image as both "PD" (public domain) and GFDL. Public domain means you give up all copyrights to the image so it is not actually a license unlike the other tags used for images. To release an image under a license like the GFDL means that you retain some copyrights and give up some. So you should remove one of the tags. If you absolutely don't care if people credit you when they use the work keep the PD one; otherwise keep the GFDL one.

Wrong name - could someone move the image to the right name for me?

Image:Chrish Huhne.jpg has the wrong name because of my clumsy typing; it should be Chris Huhne (no second "h" in the first word). Could someone move it to the right name, as I have not yet contributed enough to move files? Tamino 20:11, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

There currently is no way to move images, however, I think that there is someone working on a bot that re-uploads images on a different name, so I tagged it with Rename. You could also re-upload the image with a new name and tag the old one with Badname. --Matt314 08:26, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello, I've replaced the image of Drew Barrymore in this picture with a part of this one which resulted to this one. Can someone move the new one to the old name, because my account is too new, so I don't have the rights to do that... I hope the licencing is correct, and any language mistakes may be reported. --Fyad 18:08, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Multilicenses

If I have an image like en:Image:Champoegstreetcorner.jpg that has multi-free licenses, must I tag every licenses which that image have, or I can choose only one of those licenses to upload it to Commons? If I choose just one license, e.g. GFDL, do I violate copyright? Vinhtantran 03:47, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Please select all licenses. You would not violate copyright by selecting one but that would be against the rules of en:wp and Commons. Samulili 05:58, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

descriptions

Hi, why are my latest three images [6] auto-tagged with "description missing"? I did enter a description right with the upload. Thanks, 790 22:19, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

This simply indicates that you are (indirectly) including the Description missing template. This is a side-effect of the Information template. As long as your image is not in Category:Media lacking a description, this is ok. — Xavier, 23:09, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

How to copy an image (already uploaded into Wikipedia) into Commons?

A few days ago, I uploaded File:Trickling Filter Cross-section.png and into the English Wikipedia. Is there any way to have them copied or transferred into Commons without having to go completely through the Commons upload procedure? Or are there some Commons volunteers who will do that? - Mbeychok 23:35, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

A tool for doing this is CommonsHelper. Someone has to go "through the whole procedure" anyways, "moving" images from project to project does unfortunately mean re-uploading (and deleting the image at the other project). CommonsHelper makes this task slightly easier. NielsF ? (en, nl, fr, it) 00:09, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

I think will be good idea to investigate author of eo:Dosiero:1925-8-9-revesp-p152-privat.jpg. 1925 year image is not very old and subject died in 1962. So author could live after 1925 too. --EugeneZelenko 13:50, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Cropping / color-optimizing other people's images

Sometimes I see images on Wikipedia that haven't been cropped or that have bad lighting. Usually I can improve these images pretty fast; e.g. I turned Image:Rhinoceros in South Africa.JPG into Image:Rhinoceros in South Africa cropped.jpg. My question is: Can I assume that authors don't mind if I just overwrite their images? Or should I always upload my changed files under a new filename? (And are there any differences in this regard between Wikipedia and Commons?) -- Ddxc 23:56, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

You should only overwrite images if there is a very obvious improvement (such as unobtrusively removing a watermark). Cropping is lossy, and so can brightness adjustment be (for example by overexposing bright areas to the point of creating completely white in areas). In most cases, such improvements are subjective, and so should be uploaded under a new filename instead. LX (talk, contribs) 06:08, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

permission to use photos from your website

I would like to know if I can upload photos on your website to my website: www.italyrevisited.org.? The site is currently attempting to create a photo archive of all things dealing with Italian heritage. My email is: marymelfi@gmail.com. You say on your website that anyone can use the material. I simply want to make sure that I can do this.

If this is not the right address to ask this question, please tell me where to send it to.

         Mary Melfi marymelfi@gmail.com
Yes, you can. However, you are responsible yourself for any image you copy. While the Commons strives to host only freely licensed images, some people also upload copyright violations and give them wrong licenses. We constantly try to catch and remove such bad uploads, but we never succeed to catch them all. So you should carefully check the license information given at any image and think about whether the image is really free before you copy it. Lupo 13:08, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Adding a description - how?

Perhaps it's operator error - but I CANNOT see how to add a description to photo without. I found edit on the licence, but nothing to click on for the description, although the image I want to describe is labelled as follows. "This media has no description, and may be lacking other information. Media should have a summary to inform others of the content, author, source, and date if possible. If you know or have access to such information, please add it to the image page." I thought i MIGHT have found the way, so I added a description, but it turned out to be in the licence info. There is no LINK to add a description?? http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Luang_Prabang_Big_Waterfall.jpg. IF any one want to check where I have been trying to do this - here - http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Image:Luang_Prabang_Big_Waterfall.jpg&action=edit&section=1.

Just use the "edit" button at the top of the page, I moved the description into the box. --Matt314 06:24, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
I have noticed that people ask this a lot, also on local projects. Also people often end up editing the template (or trying to) instead of editing image description. That is why I thought I'd add a link this to No source since. If you like it, we could add it to more templates. Samulili 08:48, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Is this license compatible?

Is Attribution 2 Generic compatible with Commons' requirements? Adrian M. H. 12:24, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Why not? I would think it is perfectly fine. See . Lupo 13:15, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks very much. Adrian M. H. 14:46, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Image:Standbeeld Pierre De Geyter in het MIAT te Gent.png

I have a problem with this picture. It was already used on Dutch and Spanish Wikipedia, and has now been taken to the English one as well. All of this to illustrate the article on Pierre De Geyter, author of the Internationale. I am not a copyright freak - but in this case the creator of the statue, Tom Frantzen (born 1954, sorry, all links in Dutch: [8]) is still alive! I wonder if the person who made the photograph realizes that there is no (or in fact very restricted) panorama freedom in Belgium. In any case, you need to pay to enter the museum, so there is no panorama to begin with. Under these circumstances, even making the photograph smaller, so that only the face is shown, is not going to help. This thing is copyrighted: only Tom Frantzen can give us permission to use this, and why should he?

Surely, we cannot use the fact that not the statue, but the guy represented is the subject of the articles we put the picture in, to claim this thing is alright?

If the thing is deleted, can it be used under free usage in the US? (which means it may have to be copied to en:wiki?)--Paul Pieniezny 14:13, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Oh, and I forgot to say that in France, there is litigation about whether his musical works are still copyrighted or not, so we could actually get into trouble when copyright people notice this. Actually, I want to be sure that this falls under "panorama" before I nominate for deletion. Paul Pieniezny 14:23, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
I'm trying to contact the sculpturor. -- Bryan (talk to me) 14:43, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
The sculpturor does not want to release the image under a free license (in fact he does not want it to be published at all) so I have deleted the image. -- Bryan (talk to me) 19:46, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Arrowhead problem in SVG

The arrowheads on my diagram image:Big-Endian.svg don't show in most Commons renderings (except when I click through to a pure svg file). I found this on Commons:Transition to SVG: "The marker tag (<marker>) isn't supported correctly so that e.g. arrows aren't displayed. This can be worked around by converting the relevant arrow to a path.".

So I tried "Object to path" operation on the arrowheaded connectors in Inkscape (in which I drew the original), and uploaded the result. No joy, even after using the "purge" tab.

I suppose I could generate a PNG, but can't Mediawiki be made to do arrowheads in SVG?! Any ideas? -R. S. Shaw 04:26, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Update: I found a note that I should use "Stroke to path", and this worked for the above image, but when I did the same for it's sibling image:Little-Endian.svg, none of the arrowheads are rendered. Maybe it's pilot error, but I don't think so. -R. S. Shaw 05:11, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
It's known problem, but unfortunately is not fixed yet. See bugzilla:5325 and Commons:Bugs for details. --EugeneZelenko 13:56, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Difficult duplicate image situation

I have a difficult duplicate image situation.

I uploaded a higher resolution version of an image which is somewhat digitally altered that probably should replace another version of the same image that was already here and is also somewhat digitally altered.

I have found several duplicates of other images and I know the template to use or sometimes I have just gone ahead and uploaded a better version. Yet I am extremely uncomfortable with handling this one because it has received special treatment and attention. I did not think as much about the community response as I did the image and what the software I am familiar with can do with it and I am very sorry for the defensive text about this problem here today as well.

I need someone else to make the decision about this -- even if that means that the one I uploaded is removed from the commons collection. Image:Wrightflyer.jpg is the one that was here already and the other one Image:Wrightflyer_highres-edit.jpg. I have 16x20 inch prints of both and of the original. Unfortunately, all you can do is to believe me when I tell you that my version printed better. -- carol 18:10, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

As the other edited version is a featured picture, it would be appropriate to nominate the new version to FP, and if it is considered a better version the other one will be delisted. It is only exact duplicates of images that commons does not need, there is no requirement at all to delete different edits of the same picture, in fact it is generally encouraged that they be kept as they are part of the images revision history. :-) --Tony Wills 02:00, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
I appreciate the change in tone (I looked at the diff) however, it might have been interesting to rant about scaling images (down or up) as method of repair; I have some strong feelings about that. -- carol 12:48, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
