HELP!

There are some excellent pictures of the Gulf of Bothnia at Flickr. However, the Flickr lickr registrations look difficult and isn't just a case of "I want to upload a couple of images" if you try to be one. Is there any simple way of uploading some certain pictures from Flickr without a registration or is it prohibited? --Harris Morgan 21:32, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

We answer questions about how to upload files to Wikimedia Commons. If you want to upload files to Flickr, that is not our concern. Notice that every image you can see on your monitor is stored in a memory of your computer. --Juiced lemon 16:35, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
You don't have to be registered to Flickr in order to uploas images from ther to Commons. Just click on "all sizes" and save the "original" size to your computer and then upload it using Upload work from Flickr. Just make sure that the flickr license is compatible wiht the requirements here on Commons./Lokal_Profil 16:49, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Under "Additional information" both of the images say © All rights reserved. They are thus not cc licensed and therfore cannot be uploaded to commons. To find only images which are allowed go to advanced search and tick "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed photos", also tick the two boxes about commercial use and modifications. /Lokal_Profil 22:22, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
And in addition to that advice, maintain a healthy awareness that not all Flickr users understand or care about copyright laws, so use common sense to spot cases where the Flickr uploader clearly isn't the copyright holder (professional-looking images of celebrities taken with several different cameras should ring a few alarm bells, for example). —LX (talk, contribs) 22:29, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Obiects not shawn in SVG images resized

Hi, I'm not experienced with SVG format because I'm begun a few days ago with Inkscape. Yesterday I've posted the SVG version of two pictures (original size 800x600 and 800x450), but at small size not all the objects are visible. P.a. Image:Ichneumonidae.svg is correctly shawn at sizes bigger than 350px, but many important details are lost when the image is shawn with small sizes (see the sample).

Hi, in Image:European kinship system de.svg, the PNG thumb still is that of the first version, although the file has gone through three corrective changes. How do you instruct the bots to refresh the thumb? Cheers --Quilbert 02:34, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Statue copyright?

I want to upload a picture I took of a statue in a town square in the Czech Republic. When I try to, I come to a page that gives me the red hand, saying that it's not permitted. I looked at the copyright page here and, O my God, you've got to be kidding me, who can make sense of that junk? Common sense tells me that a public statue created in 1884 by a certain J. Stachovsky is not protected under anything like copyright law, but common sense also tells me that O.J. did it. What's the story? Milkbreath 15:45, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

"Czech Republic Pictures, drawings, paintings, movies, etc. displaying a work permanently located in any public place (incl. streets, places, parks etc.) may be distributed without the original work's author's consent. The name of the author and the title of the work should always be indicated. The allowance does not apply to three-dimensional reproductions."

Problem viewing Wikipedia pages

Using a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop running XP Home Edition, IE 7, and the latest Java (Sun) updates I seem to be able to fully access Wikipedia pages and materials without problems.

However, using an older "emachines PC" running XP Home Edition, IE 6, and the latest Java updates, I'm able to view pages at Meta-Wiki, Wikibooks, Wikispecies, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wikionary, Wikiquote and Wikiversity, but not at Wikipedia. None of the Wikipedia "pages" (for each tab) display like they should. Text and graphics around the periphery display just fine but the page data doesn't appear and visible links don't work. Curiously, clicking "Printable Version" lets me view a seemingly normal html-like page view for each page that wouldn't display.

I'm told the problem seemed to start when a Wimdows originated Java update was passed over and a user instead went to the Sun site and downloaded the latest Sun Java software. Prior to this the emachine computer displayed Wikipedia pages just fine.

Anyone able to give me some ideas as to how I might best troubleshoot and fix this?

Helmet designs

I've been creating svg representations of Formula One helmet designs - see Category:Formula One helmet designs for the works in question. However, on Wikipedia, someone said that these might have to be fair use. I thought these would be fine as I created them all myself and they are not derivatives of any existing work, but artistic interpretation of helmets that F1 drivers use. I'm sure everyone here knows more about copyright law than I do so I'd like to hear some opinions. Thanks. Readro 10:35, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Hm, tricky. Where was it someone suggested they might be fair use? (Or more accurately, the designs are copyrighted -> these are deriv works.)

Here is where the discussion took place. I create them by using photos as a reference, but only to get the basic pattern really. Damon Hill's was done from memory. Gugelmin's was using this I think, but adjusting the base colour from memory because it was only dark blue late in his career. For Schumacher's I used this as a reference. As you can see, they are not derivative works of the photos, they were only used for reference. Readro 11:41, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Making a copy of a logo yourself doesn't mean you own the copyright. When your intent is to copy the design of the original logo, the logo's copyright holders own the copyright. So I think unfortunately this is not free. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 09:00, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Reuse in multimedia presentation

I am creating mutimedia presentations for my school to teach curriculum content. I have found several pictures from the Wiki site that I would like to use in the presentations. How do I get permission to use the images? I also intend to sell the presentations to teachers at other schools. Does permission extend to sale of presentations as long as I site the work? That's really exciting! Great news to hear our work is being used.
All the works available here can be used without requesting permission (although people often like to be notified, but it's not a requirement). All works here can also be used for commercial use -- it's one of our requirements.
To know exactly what you need to do to meet the conditions of the license, we need to know which license the works you want to use refer to. Can you tell us the name of the work/s or the URL? New to Commons, need help

Kasuga created a new version of Wikipe-tan which I've edited to fit a WikiProject on Wikipedia. I want to upload the images I've edited to Commons, but I don't know what to do in terms of the licensing and crediting Kasuga for the original illustration. It sounds like you've created a derivative work of a Wikipe-tan image. That's fine, but it means you have certain obligations when you distribute the work (i.e. upload it here). To meet these obligations you should
  • release the work under the same license as the original, and
  • credit the original author. You can do this when you write the description/summary for your upload, by writing something like "This is a modified version of Image:original.jpg by User:Original author." Please link to the original image page/URL and use the author's username or name.
You can use the default upload form for a case like this.
Try uploading it and see how you go. If you have any more questions or want us to check over it when you're done, just post back here and we can do that. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 09:10, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Nice work. It looks pretty good. I would just make two minor suggestions:
  • In future consider using a more descriptive title. You can use spaces and full words and stuff.
  • what was the title or URL of the original image? That needs to be included.

Credit Line and License Text For Downloaded Art

When using/printing downloaded art (photos and/or illustrations) how should we show the credit line for art/artist/creator/photographer for art that is licensed under CC and/or GFDL? And we understand that CC (Creative Commons) does not require us to print the license itself, but GFDL does require us to print the GFDL license. Is this correct? Can we print the GFDL license in the back and refer to it in the credit line? Or, is it sufficient to just print the URL at wikimedia of the GFDL text in the credit line without the text itself? How should the credit line read exactly for CC or GFDL? Both? (~Very Confused. We cannot find anyplace on wikimedia/wikipedia where it specifies this plainly/flatly/clearly.) Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Since no-one else has answered, I'll give it a shot.
Yes with GFDL you have to include the complete copy of the license. And you can print it in the back and refer to it in the credit line. In the back you should also list the authors of the material.
In a cc-by license (the "by" means attribution) you have to mention the author.
For the credit line, well, just say what license it is licensed under.
But I am not a lawyer and this answer is not to be considered legal advice. If you want to be on the safe side, ask a lawyer.

Panorama thumb unavailable

I have uploaded Image:Marseille vu de La Vesse.jpg and Image:Trinity College Facade.JPG but I can see them only in the full resolution page.

Can someone explain me what is the problem?

Purging not working for gallery display

I've followed the instructions here to get this Image:Military manuevers south of Jerusalem 1914.jpg to display properly in my gallery here; e.g., one purge. It displays fine in this category. Multiple purges and hard refreshes later, it's still not displaying in the gallery. Ideas? --BrokenSphere 16:47, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

How to Cite Public Domain Images in a Book.

I have looked for an answer to this question in the FAQ, the Help Desk, and at the Village Pump. If I've missed it, could someone please direct me with a link? And, if the answer is not yet here, could someone please tell me how one would cite images labelled in the Commons as public domain (in particular, the engravings from Vesalius's De humani corporis fabrica [like this one: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Vesalius_Fabrica_p357.jpg])? If an image is in the public domain, and no sort of licensing is indicated, who gets credit for it? The artist himself? This is my first submission, and I just started looking around in here yesterday, so excuse me, please, if I've missed something huge. Katie K 05:02, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

The page to help you should be Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia, however it's not entirely helpful in answering this.
Of course, the original artist should be acknowledged as the author. Whether the copyright has expired or not doesn't change that fact. For this case, I suggest putting a credit/caption line like Image from Andreas Vesalius's "De humani corporis fabrica" (1543), page 357. Available from Wikimedia Commons at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Vesalius_Fabrica_p357.jpg . How is that? pfctdayelise (说什么?) 06:05, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

{{PD-US}} - image copyright law

Greetings! I just want to confirm one of my suspicions about the complicated US copyright law. User:Denis Barthel and I have had this discussion about the copyright of a 1908 botanical illustration published in Germany (see the image currently at en-Wikipedia). My understanding is that Wikimedia servers are hosted in the US so US copyright law applies across the board on all Wikimedia wikis, so placing this image on the de-wiki would not be in violation of German copyright law, correct? (De-wiki is effectively being published on the internet from a location in the US. At least that's my interpretation. Am I correct in assuming that? I have many more images I can scan and upload from that publication that would be of use for the en-wiki articles I'm creating. If I get a positive affirmation of the above, I'll transfer the existing images back to Commons and begin uploading additional scans. Thanks for your help! --Rkitko 20:22, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

To my knowledge, Das Pflanzenreich was never published in the US. It was wholly a German publication attempting to describe all plant families (it was never completed - see w:Adolf Engler#Plant taxonomy works) I didn't think it had to be published in the US in order to fall under the 1923 date stipulation. --Rkitko 13:13, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
{{PD-US}} applies only to U.S. works. I only skimmed over your discussion... apparently the author died in 1954. Hence his 1908 work is copyrighted in Germany (and other EU countries) until 2024. As a pre-1909 foreign publication, it would be PD in the U.S. The Commons' rule is that an image must be PD in both its source country and in the U.S. if it is to be hosted here under a PD claim. These images fail the "source country" part. They'd be fine at the English Wikipedia, which operates under U.S. law exclusively, but neither here nor at the German Wikipedia. The image was published in the United States before 1923 and as such is public domain. You can upload it to Commons and tag it with {{PD-US}}. See Commons:Licensing for more information. -- Bryan (talk to me) 22:26, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

I think that an account has to be a couple of days old before you're allowed to upload images on top of old ones, to prevent vandalism. I'll sort out the ones above for you but once a few days have passed you should be able to do it yourself. /Lokal_Profil 16:52, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
For .jpg images that have been turned to .png images it's not possible to uppload on top of the old image. Instead just add {{Template:Superseded|Image:NewImage.png|Image has been cleaned up}} to the jpg image page. For the Deutsche_See-Logo.JPG image I'm unsure because the original image is a derivative work of a copyrighted image. /Lokal_Profil 17:03, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
In my humble opinion this is verry complicated. All i wanted to do was to clean up a few images to help. I was planning to do more but it take more time figuring out how i should sumbit the stuff than it actually take retouch the images. Micze 20:59, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Well, pretty soon, you will be able to update images directly (if they are the same file format). For ones which change file format, you can still let us know here at the Help desk and we will fix them up. We prefer that people do useful stuff with some assistance, rather than get defeated and stop altogether! Thank you. Then i will wait until the replace starts to work. The easiest way i could imagine to get many pictures done is if i got a compressed archive with the pictures and included instructions for each image what cleaning request they have. I can easily process 100 pictures a day if it is just simple things like brushing away date stamps cropping and dirty b/w drawings. Micze 21:39, 1 August 2007 (UTC) /edit I did a few pictures anyway.

I've tried to add tags to some of the pictures. I dont know how well it went. And the splitted images i have no idea how to tag.
The way you tagged the last ones looks good. For the split one you can do something similar to how I tagged Image:Current_coins_of_West_Europe_XIIIth-XVIth_Centuries.jpg. Just don't forget to remove the ifc template from the original image and link to the cleaned one, otherwise no one will find the images you've worked on ;) /Lokal_Profil 20:23, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Hello, i manage images about video game on Commons, and i would like to have help for this catégory. According to {{Second Life}}, i understand author of an object into Second Life own the right of his objects, and we must have his agreements to release a free screenshot. So who own the right of these screenshots ?

I think here (Image:SL The Capital (68,135,22).jpg) we must have agreement of the person who create the screenshot, the person who create the avatar, and the person who create swimming pool. It's possible that hundred persons created little objects displayed in this screenshot ? What must we do for these screenshots ?

  • I think this is just like the legality of a panorama shot. It depends on the focus of the picture. If the person is taking a picture of their avatar lounging in a pool, the focus is not the pool, it is mere background. It is, in my opinion, similar to taking a picture in Times Square, New York, where it is impossible to avoid taking photographs of ads in the panorama. Also, the person may have designed the pool. It is not uncommon for SL characters to have elaborate mansions. -Nard 22:56, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

In general you can upload a new version of a file by scrolling to the bottom of the image page and clicking the link "upload a new version of this file". However if your account is < 4 days old you can only do this for images that you have uploaded. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:15, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

NavFrame Does not work properly in the Commons

I uploaded this image from the English Wikipedia to the Commons and I'd like somebody with more experience here to check if I've made any mistake. Thank you. We need a lot of people to help transfer images from en.wikipedia. I've looked at the image and this is how I would've done it differently. The differences are small and not very important, but this is the way I have seen it done. By the way, have you heard of CommonsHelper? That is a very handy tool for transfering images. Image will not display

I transferred Image:DoublePenetration.svg from enwiki, but the image page won't show the image. I tried visiting http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/thumb.php?w=782&f=DoublePenetration.svg&action=purge, extrapolating from a post above, but it will not display that way, either. If I change the 782 to 750 a smaller version displays, so it doesn't seem to be image errors. I assume that there is some other step I'm meant to take in clearing the cache or something, but I don't know what that might be. I thought there was a help page on this topic, but I couldn't readily find it. A pointer to that help page and any assistance convincing the image to display would be appreciated. Further: A thumnail of it used in a wikipedia article (this: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_sex_positions&oldid=151160779 near the bottom) also does not display. Someone changed it for a PNG version stating that it didn't work in firefox. I checked in internet explorer, and it doesn't seem to work in IE either, though, so I don't think it is a firefox issue. --Sopoforic 23:05, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

It magically started working--I suspect the issue was that I was creating addresses like http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:DoublePenetration.svg?action=purge when I should have done http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Image:DoublePenetration.svg&action=purge. Hello, I am new to the Commons so I am unable to replace images. I have just uploaded Image:Alecempire1cropped.jpg and wish for it to replace Image:Alecempire1.jpg if possible. It is merely a cropped version of the existing image.

Images I uploaded

Being fairly new to Wikipedia I have not been able to figure out how to find images that I have uploaded. I use two images in a page for Prospect Hill Cemetery (Washington, DC). One I uploaded as Prospect_Hill_House.jpg and the other one as Prospect_hill_gravesites.jpg. The links work fine on the actual page. But when I go to the Commons and search for Prospect Hill I can only see the gravesite image. The other one never shows. Where can I look up as to how this really works? Please upload it as a separate image and put a link from the coin one to the metric one. When you write "source" for your image please provide the name of this coin image as the source. Since the author has donated the image into the public domain, you can put whatever you like, although people tend to "respect" the original license terms and so in this case would probably also donate to the public domain. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:05, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

SVG rendering problems

I recently uploaded a SVG I had created to the Commons. On my computer, and in Inkscape, the SVG looks fine; However, some of the parts of the SVG render transparent on the Commons. The image is saved in the plain SVG format, not the Inkscape SVG format. Is this a issue with Wikimedia Commons? Or is this a issue with my picture?

This is the image that has been rendered incorrectly.
Hm weird. It renders correctly in Firefox. So either Firefox and Inkscape are implementing the SVG standard wrong, or rsvg (MediaWiki renderer) is. I will see if anyone with SVG knowledge chimes in. If not, in a few days we can open a bug report. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 14:13, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

I found the problem. The Commons SVG renderer does not support the "blur" feature in Inkscape. When a object is blurred the Commons SVG renderer just makes the object completely transparent. I have fixed this problem in my image. Thanks to all the people that responded to my question.

general licensing question

I am wanting to self-publish a book on alternative energy through BookSurge at Amazon, and want to use images from Wikimedia Commons. I am completely baffled as to the copyright issues, especially for GNU and can't figure out if I can use these images in a book for profit. It sounds like as long as I give credit on the photo itslef on the page it occurs, such as "Source - photo by Tom Smith, from Wikimedia Commons" I am OK? Check out Commons:Reuse. The credit should include the exact title of the image and the name of the actual license. Some licenses such as GFDL require you to include a copy of the fulltext of the license. Are you intending to release your book under a free license? Censored images

This image is a user-altered (face blanked out) image of this image. Is this allowed? COM:PS says "The Commons may contain content that some readers consider objectionable or offensive. Like Wikipedia, the Commons is not censored.". The user altered image is clearly thus a violation of COM:PS, is it not? Secondly, only images which are useful for Wikipedia are allowed here. Incorrect. The criteria for inclusion at Commons is that it is free; not that it is used in any project. Secondly, that's not what we refer to by "censoring". What we mean by censoring is, for example, the altering of images of genitals or nudity in order to make them "less pornographic". --Boricuaeddie 00:34, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
A note: Commons:Project scope indicates that, "This also means that files uploaded to the Commons have to be useful for some Wikimedia project. Although I do recall we have censored images to protect private individuals' privacy in the past. Mary Ann Bevan image - "noncommercial" but from 1924

I hate trying to figure out copyright law, so I'm hoping you experts will be able to help. Please take a look at this site and the image thereon. It states that it's from 1924 (making me think that we may be able to use it) but it states "noncommercial" with the American Philosophical Society as the source. What is the filename for Flickr images?

I am attempting to upload this photograph from Flickr. I have followed the Flickr link at Commons:Upload. What do I enter as the source filename? The Upload page says "Source like a web link or give a statement like 'own work'." However, I can't seem to find a URL that is acceptable to the upload mechanism. Scanning black and white images from glossy pages of a book

When I scan black and white WWII pictures from books with glossy pages, the pictures often appear with a slight pinkish hue or don't come out very clearly. I'm sure I need to adjust the parameters on my scanner, but was wondering if anyone had any information on what I should set them as? CLA 21:34, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

I don't have much scanning experience, but don't you have a setting to scan to a greyscale image? That should at least eliminate any colored tint. Lupo 21:57, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Images put up without permission

I recently discovered that a few images from my site have been put up on Wikimedia Commons without my permission, crediting someone else, and under an incorrect license.

An example is Image:Apple_CD150.jpg which was copied from http://popcorn.cx/computers/apple/peripherals/drives/cdrom-300e/cdrom_300e.jpg (ignore for now that they uploaded it with the wrong name)

These images are not, and have never been, released under a license. However, I have been considering putting my entire site under a CC-BY-SA license which would allow them to remain here.

Should I request that the person who uploaded the images correct the information or should I do that myself?

I guess the original uploader didn't know that this was your image, as the image is also shown at the alleged source, where it is mentioned as "anonymous donation"[6]. In any case "Marco Mioli" is wrong.
In this case, I would say upload the image again, under the correct name, and license it as CC-BY-SA. Then slap a {{Duplicate}} tag on Image:Apple_CD150.jpg. I'll take care of replacing the three references to that image then.
In view of this incident, the "authorization" at [7] for {{Museo Apple}} seems questionable. Apparently they released some images that didn't belong to them. Lupo 13:59, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

If you can show they are yours, just edit the description pages appropriately, and perhaps leave a note on the discussion page for each explaining that although found on that other site, that they instead come from your site. It might be easiest if you get the text from the Image:AppleCD 300e Plus.jpg (just go into 'edit' on that page and copy the text) and copy it to each of those other image description pages and just edit the description and category for each. --Tony Wills 22:35, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Can not view some images

I am not sure what is going on with Image:Kos0043_small.jpg and Image:Kos0043 s.jpg. Neither image is viewable, I can not download them, they have a file size but no dimensions. Do I presume they have been corrupted? Maybe it was a faulty upload. The uploader has not been active for some time, maybe they should just be deleted? PNG Optimization

Hello. I've been uploading a few .png files that are of quit a hgh resoltuion, and saw in the FAQ that they should be under 6 MB. I was wondering what would be good free software to use to compress the .pngs so they fit within the guidelines. Wizardman 21:02, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

There is stuff like OptiPNG, but that is generally only a few percents. The problem with the whole PNG stuff is that the software is unable to generate thumbnails for hires PNGs :( -- Bryan (talk to me) 20:23, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
If there is a good reason for their high resolution (eg highly detailed) it would seem silly not to upload them just because the software here doesn't generate thumbnails, but also upload a smaller version or a version in another format with an "other_versions" field so people can find the hi-res version. --Tony Wills 23:57, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Las dificultades que estás teniendo se deben a que todas las imágenes que se suban a Commons tienen que permitir la realización de obras derivadas y el uso comercial. Si en su origen (la revista que fotografías) no se permite uno de estos dos aspectos, la imagen fotografiada no se puede subir o, si se sube, será borrada (puedes leer al respecto Commons:Obra derivada).

Unfortunately, a permission for Wikipedia only is not enough. This permission does not even allow you to upload it to Commons. Images on Commons must be under a free license, that is they must be freely useable by anybody for any purpose, including commercial use and derivative work. Commonly used licenses are the Creative Commons Attribution, which grants the previous named freedoms, but ensures that the author is attributed, and the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike, which ensures the author is attributed and derivative works stay free under the same license. You need explicit permission from the author for that license (the author must say I agree with licensing this image under the XX license). Logo-related question.

I recently designed (using Microsoft Paint) a logo for the Torchwood Wikiproject on the English Wikipedia. This logo is based on the logo of the fictional Torchwood Institute, and the television programme Torchwood, in which the Institute features, but is slightly different.

It depends. What image are you refering to, and how did you licence it on Wikipedia? If it was uploaded under PD, GFDL, or Creative Commons, it can be reused here as long as it is properly attributed to you. If it was not a compatable free licence, it probably would need to be deleted from Commons as an unfree image anyway. That's about all I can say without knowing more about your specific case. I'm sorry, but that's not a request we can fulfill I think. By granting the attribution license you've agreed that "Redistribution, derivative work, commercial use, and all other use is permitted". He means that Image:Four Province Flag of Ireland.svg is just an SVG wrapper around a PNG image. Maybe you stored it wrongly. The file's contents are

It's SVG now, ok. But Image:Four Province Flag of Ireland.svg still looks strange, as if there were some blown-up PNG in a layer below the top one. What's with they grey and blue areas on the eagle? What's with the black lines on the crowns, the hand, and elsewhere, that aren't black but grey with black dots? What's with the transparent rectangle at the top? The hand has its middle finger cut off. Has this been created by running some auto-tracer on a PNG or JPG original? Lupo 08:03, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Automated tracers rarely do a good job. With that SVG, we're no better off than with a PNG. I think Bryan meant tracing manually. AFAIK, that's how most of our SVGs, especially of flags, are done. Lupo 15:52, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

We're slowly getting there :-) Really. I appreciate your efforts, and thank you very much. But some further hints:
  • I don't think flags should have transparent areas. If it's white, it should be white. Otherwise, the flag will be displayed wrongly on a colored background.
  • Image:Province of Connacht Flag.svg: that eagle needs way more work. This black Rorschach blot is hardly recognizeable as an eagle. The right side looks good, except for the transparency. (From a technical point of view. I don't know how these flags typically look like.)
  • Image:Province of Ulster Flag.svg looks good, just a minor detail: can you clean up the space between the little and index fingers? That little "hole" there is really distracting. (I'd try reducing the width of the black borders, not filling the white "hole" with black.) Also, there's a transparent frame at the top, left, and bottom borders.

Pretty good now. Now let's return to your original request about replacing the older version with these new ones: there's nothing bad about having several versions. You could just include these new versions in the Wikipedia articles, and you should put your version into categories (for instance, add [[Category:Flags of Ireland]][[Category:Ulster]] to Image:Province of Ulster Flag.svg). If you really think the old versions should go, you could try asking for their deletion at COM:DEL. (To do so, place {{delete|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} on the image page and then follow the instructions in the template.) Lupo 08:03, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Freedom of panorama is fairly restrictive in US law, so if you're prominently featuring a copyrighted work that's not an actual building then yes, it's derivative. But in this case I'm not sure McDonald's trademarked logo is copyrighted. I believe it's too simple to be eligible. TCC (talk) (contribs) 23:56, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Image:Petrol-contact.svg

Hi, User:Petrol.91 uploaded a "contact image", Image:Petrol-contact.svg, with the diverse ways of contacting him. My concerns are

  1. it includes images from software like Skype and GMail I am not sure that user, even if he wanted to, would be able this as pd-self as he doesn't own the logos for Skype etc. (I think it is a "derivative work" but couldn't find anything specifically on using logos - sorry if I missed it).
  2. no valid license (I have left him a msg on this), and he has now added that the image is not for distribution which would make it unsuitable for commons even if it was licensed properly.

Can someone clarify the situation so that the image can be put up for deletion or not (maybe I'm just seeing things)? Thanks. Deadstar 08:05, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

What must I do?

I have uploaded a few pictures of my own town, made by myself, to illustrate the article about it on NL-Wikipedia. I have chosen "Public domain", but it seems to be a problem with the picture: Image:Yzendyke2.JPG I really do not know what I must do. Would you like to fix it for me, please? Copyleft question

If I release an image onto the Wikimedia Commons under a Copyleft license, the copyright holder can still use the image without adhering to the copyleft. Is this correct? - Hahnchen 18:17, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Under the terms of the Creative Commons directive and GNU Free Documentation License, I understand I can reproduce an image from Wikimedia Commons in a printed publication for free, providing I attribute the licensor. For this image — http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Rakhat_Aliyev.jpg — who is the licensor, i.e license owner? Is it Wikimedia Commons, the Author - 'Estaviev', or another? pls help

In copyright or not?

There's no definite way to tell. On the other hand, there's no postal code of any sort, the bridge on the card was removed in 1970, and the card appears much older, though that's not conclusive. Denimadept 03:46, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
Oh, here's an interesting clue. Being a postcard, it contains postage information. It says "ONE CENT For United States and Island Possessions, Cuba, Canada and Mexico. TWO CENTS For Foreign." So, when was that the price for a postcard? Hmmmm.... Denimadept 03:55, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Okay, pre 1970 US publication-- is there any copyright notice or not? If not, I believe you can tag it with Template:PD-US-no notice. That much I can answer. The card is definitely pre-1970 as spoken by the quality of the image and the fact that the bridge involved was demolished that year. Also, there is no explicit copyright statement of any sort on the card. The image is similar to what the links mentioned above call "linen": low quality color half-tone, split back card with "POST CARD" on it. I just sent a note to the Portland, ME government to see if they know anything about the company, since that's the sum total of information I've got on it: the name and the city. I added a logo of my music group (Zeus-crest.png) and the image is now tagged for deletion because I didn't use propper licensing. But I don't know how to do it properly. Please help. If you are talking about your own work you could choose {{Cc-by-3.0}} (or all version). If you are talking about other people work there are {{Attribution}} but you must provide link to permission on Web or Commons:OTRS.

replacing files

I originally up loaded Image:Map of Lyre River.png, but realized you couldn't really see the river, so I re did it, and uploaded Image:Map of the Lyre River.png. Could the first one be deleted? I forget how to do that. Murderbike 03:39, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Image:Flag of USA.svg vs. Image:Flag of the United States.svg

Which one should get delited?
I woul delite Image:Flag of USA.svg, because I think "Flag of the United States" is a better filename. Question: Flag of USA.svg: 1330 × 700 Pixel Flag of the United States.svg: 1235 × 650 Pixel. -> Flag of USA.svg is bigger should it get uploaded with a new filename or is it useless, because it's an .svg-file?

All other flag images are named Flag of <State> while State is France or Germany or Lebanon and so on. AFAIK no State the United States exists - according to en:United States it is either USA, US or United States. So the proper file name is Flag of USA od Flag of United States nothing else.
