My friend CrimeThinc has uploaded an image (part of many images which are not uploaded yet) to use on Wikipedia. The image can be found at Rene Descartes. There was no copyright notice, license or any rights information within the card itself so therefore he put "I don't know which license". Could anyone please give some advice on whether to delete that or can it be kept on Wikimedia Commons? I am new here, but I am familiar with Wikipedia. Problem answered. The file has been automatically deleted by a user who explained the problem on the talk page. Feel free to give more advice about this issue. Thank you. One cropped version more out of focus than the other: Why?[edit]
Why does one picture seem more out of focus than the other? I actually wanted to have the upper picture deleted, but it seems the lower one is not as good quality... although both are cropped from the same original! The lower one is fuzzy because it's been resized, and by an unpleasant proportion like 80%. You can tell because elements from the top picture are smaller in the lower picture, and because more elements fit in the same width. This was not just a crop. Dcoetzee03:00, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I came across the above image which is currently licenced under a CCBYSA-self licence. The image is a scan of a Norwegian driving licence and I would therefore suspect it comes under the copyright of the Norwegian government. I am the owner of that image, and I am not sure about what the rules says, and I am not sure I would like it if the image was to be changed to a public domain image. Can someone give me an actual list of "ogg" VIDEO files that are used in Wikipedia articles? Not interested in these files that are associated with any User, but in ACTUAL acticles so I can see some example usages of these type video files actually being used. I am suspicious there are very few (if any) such ACTUAL articles that incorporate these type files. Can someone give me say a few dozen actual examples of usage now from apparently some 400 such files that have been uploaded. I am NOT very sophisticated in this type of searching, so I am just looking for an actual list of such articles that I can just go look up. Please, someone help me!!! That info isn't easy to find. Here's a list with videos on commons, by use on wikimedia wikis. I generated this by asking the toolserver database for all videos, and then running that list through CheckUsage. Note that the english wikipedia is missing because of technical difficulties. Even without en:wp, i count more than 400 uses (in the main namespace) of the about 550 videos we have.
About the structure of that file: It is a tab separated table with sections. There is a section for each wiki, and in each line, the first name is the name of an article on that wiki. After that is a list with videos used on that page.

Sometimes thumbnailing doesn't work right, and some times bad files get stuck in the cache. Sometimes doing a ?action=purge on the image page can help. Reuploading the image can usually unstick it. I draw some coats of arms to illustrate the wikipedia pages about cities. I usually upload them with the GFDL/CC license. I found today that an other user replaced systematically the license, on every drawing of a coat of arms of Luxembourg, with one of his own creation specifically dedicated to Luxemburgish coats of arms. See for instance Bascharage, and my discussion with an other user here. Is it normal? If what you are doing is making a exact copy, or attempting to do so, of someone else's design (such as a coat of arms), you are not creating copyrightable content. Based on your recent contribution history, it looks to me that you've made SVG versions of various pre-existing Luxembourgish coats-of-arms; doing so does not give you any copyright interest and no say in the applicable license. The license under which the content may be used will be determined entirely by the relevant law applicable to Luxembourgish coats-of-arms (of which I am no expert, but there are others on Commons who are). Your efforts to create the SVGs are appreciated, but you do not thereby acquire droit d'auteur; you have no copyright interest in the resulting representation, and no authority to alter the conditions under which the image in question may be used. Thanks for your answer. Three remarks:
I am not making an exact copy of someone else's design, but generally making a drawing of my own from a mere description. Sometimes I have a model, but it is very rare I make an exact copy. Compare for instance Image:Blason_ville_lux_Lac-de-la-Haute-Sûre.svg and [1] and you will see I improved a lot the design of the pike.
If you did read the Luxembourgish law which they refer to, you probably found it is unrelevant to coats of arms of cities (it is only about national emblems).
I obviously did not claim any droit d'auteur since I chose a free license. I just do not understand what these free licenses mean if someone else can replace them by something else without my agreement.
It looks to me that there is sufficient creative expression involved here that you probably are entitled to claim a copyright. To clarify a common misunderstanding: copyright (droit d'auteur) is necessary for a free license; If you do not have the copyright, you can not specify a license. IN this case, that means:
If your work is creative, then you have the copyright automatically and, in the EU, permanently. You can then share this right, using a free license.
If you are creating mere reproductions, or a purly technical representation of something described by text, then there is no creativity involved, and you gain no copyright. In this case, you cannot apply any license, free or not. The images would be PD (if the original design is PD), and should be tagged as such.
So, AFAIK, you can claim copyright for making a graphical representation of an elaborate design, if you didn't reproduce/immitate an existing graphical representation. This is a fuzzy derivative work case. The original coat-of-arms is subject to whatever copyright terms apply to coats-of-arms, whereas your nontrivial original modifications are subject to your own choice of license. The coats of arms in this case are probably in the public domain; if this is the case, he is free to choose whatever license he wants. In such cases, I normally indicate in a comment on the image that the included content is in the public domain for whatever reason, without using a template. The border between a creative work and a purely technical representation seems difficult to define clearly, since — at least — the shape of the shield, the tincture (azure is blue, but it can be all the panel of blue, from dark to light) and the precise dimensions of the different objects can be freely chosen by the drawer, in some measure.
Anyway, when I have good reasons to consider that the work is creative, how can I avoid that an other editor alter the license I chose? The most natural way should be to talk with this editor, but my experience of yesterday showed me that it is not always possible to discuss calmly with someone who is so sure of himself without anything serious to support his opinion. Hello, certainly drawing a coa from description does not involve sufficient creativity. In fact, CoAs are a very good example of far copyright goes: What may be protected is the essence of the CoA that is represented by the description. How to color it and how to draw the details is not creative, but mere design. It may require a lot of skill and labour, but mere skill and labour, as well as mere design, is not copyrightable. Your work may enjoy automatic design protection, such as granted in the EU for three years after publication, but CC-by-sa and GFDL are copyright licenses that are not applicable to design. Comepare this to the situation with typefaces. They are not copyrighted either, since they are mere design of existing symbols and letters. The UN may want it widely circulated, but they wouldn't necessarily want it used commercially or for derivative works to be made; unless these are allowed, it won't fit Commons' definition of "free" (libre). Releasing images taken by family members with their consent but without revealing their details[edit]
I have uploaded a few images to Commons and/or Wikipedia under a free licence. So far, all photos have been taken by me. As I had taken the photos myself, I was able to release them either as {{PD-self}} or {{GFDL-self}}.
Supposing my husband or brother-in-law or father takes a photo for me, with my camera, and is happy for me to release it into the public domain. The upload page suggests that I have to name the author of the file, and e-mail the permission to permissions@wikimedia.org. Not everyone in my family uses a computer or has e-mail, and I think I'm the only one with a Wikipedia or Commons account, so I can't attribute it to their "usernames". I really don't want to give my full name or theirs, and yet I know that if I took the photo myself, it would suffice just to say that it was taken by ElinorD.
There are a few examples of photos that I'd like to upload, but that I wouldn't be physically able to take myself. For example, if I am kneading and folding bread dough, someone in the family would have to take the photo of the position of my hands.
How do I licence a genuinely-free, non-professional photo taken by a close family member (with the intention of releasing it into the public domain), without revealing his or her (or my) personal details? Thanks. ElinorD23:43, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well if the intent is to release it into the public domain, you might as well state that you took it. That may not be actually illegal (PD releases ALL rights including attribution) and I somehow doubt your relative will sue you for doing so. Alternatively you could argue that they were "working" for you and waived all their rights on the image to you; . I think you are being a little picky (better picky than violator tough!). If my girlfriend takes a picture of my left foot it'll be the same if I use a tripod. It'll be the same if during a trip one of the pictures were taken by her. So, if a close relative takes a picture you can upload it as your own, we just should use our "Common" sense. Where does one make or find a Category proposal?[edit]
Newbie here. I ran across the following: "It has been proposed that Category:Military people (U.S. Navy) be renamed and moved to Category:People of the United States Navy." I believe that this is a really bad idea and expressed my belief on a discussion page for the Category. But where did this proposal come from? How and where does one make such a proposal? Where do I find the proposal, and find who made the proposal, and find who is responsible for acting on the proposal? Why didn't the person who made the proposal initiate a discussion at the Category page; there is no information or prior discussion there, and I had to create the discussion page to express my point of view. So far it feels like I've undertaken a discussion with a phantom. I've looked everywhere in Commons I can think of, and have found nothing to enlighten me about any of this. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

It should not be deleted, but why would you want to do that? Why not just use a table as you did in your example? Help regarding public domain under Australian Government[edit]
Hello all. I'm sure this is a basic SVG question, but I'm having a problem with the labels on my first SVG upload. When I created Image:Icosian_grid_labelled.svg and Image:Icosian_grid_labelled2.svg in InkScape 0.45, the 20 vertex labels looked just fine (in 20-point Times New Roman and Verdana, respectively). When I upload the graphics, there's just a blob in place of the first label, and nothing for the other 19. Any ideas?

Obviously I'm doing something wrong here. All the image are mine and I have the artists' agreement to publish the images (and his work) on Wiki commons. Can someone give me a good example how I should upload these images ?
I noticed this article in a Wikipedia article, and thought it looked terribly familiar. In fact, it is very familiar to me, as it is on page 10 of the very old instructions for a lab I teach. I also believe I've seen it somewhere else (perhaps Knoll or Leo), so I am rather confused by HPaul's assertion that it is his own work. I just uploaded Image:Overlapping realmode segments.svg, which I drew using Inkscape v0.45. All the text annotations look like solid black boxes, which is of no use. In the image http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Huldenberg_monument_2.jpg I have in the description added the texts written on the panels of the statue. I want to put these three pieces of text in a table of one row and three columns. I have tried the 'normal' syntax for a table within the description, but that did not work. How can I achieve this? It is hard because the {{Information}} template is already in a table, so it doesn't like nested tables. I used a HTML table and it seems to have worked OK. if that's not what you meant, let me know. 1. Is there a general redirect from all http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia: pages to the English Wikipedia? I've absentmindedly typed in: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Hilfe (German for "help"), which took me to some non-existing page of the English Wikipedia. It took me a while to understand what actually happened. Wouldn't it make more sense to limit redirects to actually existing pages??
2. Is there a way of finding out whether someone has sent an e-mail to permissions@wikimedia.org? I've asked at a website whether they would allow us to use two pictures (explaining all the license stuff and all); they responded we could, so I asked them (on Feb 27) to send you a permission e-mail. Now I haven't heard back anymore and wonder whether they've just changed their mind, or whether they've already sent it. For 1: That is a MediaWiki software setting using interwikis. If you type in that *URL*, you'll get that behaviour. That doesn't happen when you type 'Wikipedia:Hilfe' in the search box, right??

I find that the best place to look is at Commons:List of administrators by language. I can never remember that link, so first I go to COM:A, then go to the bottom of the alphabetized list, and click "Listing by language." It appears that User:Dantadd is the most active on the Italian-speaking administrators. S/he is also "en-3." Hi, all images used on Wikimedia Commons are free in some way. Images from Wikipedia may or may not be free depending on whether the specific Wikipedia accepts fair use. The English Wikipedia for example accepts unfree material under the fair use clause.
Material on Wikimedia Commons is freely licensed. The license of the image is always indicated below the image on the image description page. It is a box that says "This image is licensed under ..." or "I, the author release this image under...". The most common licenses here are:
Public Domain, which is in fact not a license, but means that you can use the image freely for any purpose without any obligations.
Attribution only licenses, such as the Creative Commons Attribution, which means that you can use the image freely for any purpose if you credit the author.
Copyleft licenses, such as the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike and the GNU Free Documentation License. They can generally be freely used in collective work provided that you credit the author, and can be used in derivative work in case the derivate work is licensed under the same license as the original image.
All licenses have a link to the excact legal license text, which I recommend you read before using the images. You are never obligated to ask permission from the author if you use the image, but it is very kind if you do so.
As the side note, I am not a lawyer, and Wikimedia Commons makes no guarantee of validity. We try to ensure that all the images on this repository are not violating copyright laws, but we cannot guarantee it. The dancers are totally copyrighted by you. The picture of the handpositions is however a derivative work, and because it is a faithfull reproduction of a 2d work, you can probably not even claim copyright on it. I created an SVG image with Inkscape: Image:JPEG process.svg but no matter what I do it keeps showing up a black rectangle in the top right part of the image. If I click on this image to view the full version in my browser (Opera) there is no problem, so the problem persists just with the MediaWiki renderer. I'm a bit confused about the process to contact copyright owners to request permission for images. To make matters more complicated, many of those images are already uploaded to Commons. The tricky situation is the vague permission statement: "Feel free to use [these] as you would like." I'm not sure how to word an e-mail to the owner. Would I ask for her/him to consider changing their notice to "Feel free to use these images as you would like including, but not limited to, commercial reuse and/or derivative works"? Or would I ask him/her to reply to me explicitly giving permission to use images from his/her site under a specific license? But if I do that, and then forward it to permission-commons AT wikimedia DOT org, how long will it take until I know that the images have been tagged? I could just list the category of images directly, and if you would like me to do that, please say so. I would like, however, to try it myself. Any comments would be sincerely appreciated. Is photographing a book a copyright violation?[edit]

The nazi picture currently present in the montage Image:WW2 TitlePicture For Wikipedia Article.jpg is now being questioned for deletion. I think the montage needs a nazi picture, but this is the third time (!) a nazi picture is requested to be deleted/replaced in this montage. Obviously, there are copyright issues regarding pictures from Nazi Germany, but I want to point out the following: I am having big troubles now finding a suitable nazi image for my montage. Sadly, I am seeing a future problem arising - a lack of images depicting this time in German history. Personally, I need a picture that can be used which depicts a nazi rally, i.e. marching or standing nazis with visible flags and symbols. Can anyone help? I saw that image in passing a while ago and did notice that it included copyrighted images in the montage. I understand what you are saying, though. It took me forever to find a free image of Mussolini. I eventually cropped Image:Mussolini-portrait-crop.png from a larger photograph. I have looked everywhere for Mussolini photographs, and found none; the source was a free image already uploaded to Commons. I think that a few images may be public domain in the next few years, but until then, I'm not sure what to do. interesting. I uploaded the first photo of myself for work just to see if I could. (not a great photo) I would like to remove the photo with the photo my work wants me to use but it appears that I can't. Is this correct?
There is some lee-way for new and inexperienced users especially who alert us to their wishes soon (eg, two weeks) after uploading a file. But in general the licenses that we accept are irrevocable, and we don't want to encourage people to think their material can be deleted on a whim. No, you cannot delete photos yourself, you have to add {{reason for deletion}} to them and an admin such as myself will delete them.
