SVG problem

doesnt rasterize

Same problem as reported above. im using illustrator cs2, after i updated my rail map the image failed to rasterize on the filepage, but the svg open fine.

I thought id upload the same file to another test page and was surprised to find that it rasterizes ok. there cant be anything wrong with the file as its the exact same one on both pages, but the one on the left doesnt work while the one on the right works fine. solutions anyone? --PlaneMad 07:56, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

The thumbnails here are okay but got to the filepage. cleared my cache, tried in both opera and ie, no luck. But if you click on the blamk image, you can view the full size svg. --PlaneMad 12:34, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

I fixed it. It's just the thumbnail doesn't render properly. Seems to be bugzilla:2888, or at least caused for the same reason as that bug. You can force it to re-render by doing this:

• Click "edit" on the image page
• In the URL bar, change "action=edit" to "action=purge"
• Hit Ctrl+Refresh to force new rendering of thumbnail
• Repeat if necessary

And the bug strikes again Image:India map en.svg. The above procedure does not seem to work. The full size svg opens up fine. The thumbnail was fine for some time but then mysteriously stopped working, pls help -- 17:27, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

Which page is it? Are you logged into an account or not?

Filename guidelines

Hello. Dbenbenn provides some tips on his userpage. There are official instructions on file descriptions, but apparently not for filenames. However, the rule of thumb is to keep it short, sweet, but nevertheless expressive. Keep numbers, dates, years, and such out of the filename, as they are seldom useful, except for special cases, like flags and maps, which make sense better with years. Strive to name the subject unambiguously in as few words as possible :) —UED77 00:09, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Be descriptive enough to avoid a nameclash (don't call your photo Sunset.jpg or Flower.jpg). I personally don't object to dates in the filename, it's reasonably common. You can use whatever language you like - English is not necessary. Some people feel a latin script should be used (ie not CJK/Arabic etc characters), but I disagree (officially, you can use whatever you want). It's a software feature. To make a page be listed there, you have to insert the image into that page, like this:

[[Image:Example.jpg|thumb|right|Caption]]

I used the picture in an article info box. When I checked the picture and click on what links here - it said no article linking to the picture? I was just wondering how to make it happen. For example I used a map of maryland as a thumb in the article - wikipedia:1st Maryland Regiment. When I look at the map - it states no article link to it.--Oldwildbill 12:57, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Oh, right. It's a technical limitation that "file links" only works for the same wiki, i.e. Commons articles. You can see where the image is being used over all wikis by clicking the "check usage" tab at the top of the image page. Oh but wait... it doesn't show English wikipedia usage due to a problem with that database. (Should be fixed soon.) So actually it won't give you much joy at the moment. :) You can see where the image is being used in English wikipedia by clicking the "en" tab at the top of the image page, then scrolling down to the "what links here" on that "fake" image page. pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:04, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Yes. Any image at Commons can be automatically used at Wikipedia or any other Wikimedia project, as if it was already hosted there. So to insert Image:Example.jpg into an article at Wikipedia, just type something like

[[Image:Example.jpg|thumb|right|Image caption goes here]]

and it will automatically pick up the image from commons without you doing anything.

The only exception is if there is a photo already uploaded at Wikipedia with the same name -- then it will use the Wikipedia photo always, and you won't be able to use the Commons image. pfctdayelise (translate?) 11:37, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons is not an image hosting service, isn't it?

I think that it should be stated that images hosted on wikimedia commons shouldn't be used to be linked from other websites (no wikimedia related) without a link to the wikimedia commons page.. I asume?

Have you noticed our images being used on another website? Where?

regular image not displaying

I uploaded a new version of Image:World 1898 empires colonies territory.png but the regular image isnt working. The same thing happened with several other images i loaded today (such as this). The high resolution works and also the thumbnail on wikipedia works, so it isnt a major problem, but still it looks like the image isnt there. Is this something temporary or should I try to load it again later? Thanks --Astrokey44 10:08, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

I fixed it. Rendering seems to have had some problems today and yesterday. You can force the software to redraw a thumbnail by:

• clicking the "edit" button on the image page
• changing the URL from "action=edit" to "action=purge"
• hitting Ctrl+Refresh until the thumbnail renders correctly... usually repeatedly. took me about 6 goes for these ones.

I can't figure out exactly how to make it redraw other-size thumbnails, though. pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:03, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, that worked, but there now seems to be some trouble with displaying the thumbnail images in the wikipedia articles - such as w:FIFA World Cup hosts the image is not displaying. Can't create account to upload image

Panic over! I've now managed to create account. The problem below was resolved by turning off spyblocker which prevented security image being displayed. (For what reason, i do not know.) Hope this helps some one else.

Hi, Can you help me, Ive been trying to login using my wiki username and password to commons so i can upload an image. That didn't work so i tried to create an account particular to Commons. The form says... As a protection against automated spam, you'll need to type in the words that appear in this image to register an account: ... There is no image displayed saying anything. The image address is http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Captcha/image&wpCaptchaId=1465599669 file type unknown. I tried to just enter a username and password, but that failed to create an account.

I was not able to reproduce the reported problem with SpyBlocker 8.5 or 9.3 on Windows 98 with IE 6.0. Note that the captcha (and logins in general) do require cookies to be allowed for the site. --Brion VIBBER 07:57, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Another SVG rendering problem

The image http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:I-5.svg is having rendering problems on both its own page and almost every referenced page (for example the I-5 thumbnail on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_8).

I read bugzilla:2888 so I can understand what's going on however I can't figure out how to fix it completely. I did the edit=purge trick and that seemed to have fixed the Interstate 5 article image however the I-5.svg page and smaller thumbnails are still broken. I ran the CheckUsage tool on it and for en.wikipedia.org it reports "The database copy for this wiki is marked as broken, please check manually!" How can I check it manually or can an editor only do that? Fourpointsix 18:10, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

I usually just klick on the text en.wikipedia.org to the left of The database copy for this wiki is marked as broken... this brings you to the info page on en.wikipedia, from there you can see the usage on english wikipedia /Lokal Profil 23:36, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

This is actually probably NOT bugzilla:2888 but just the fact that the last few days, the software has done a really bad job at producing thumbnails. People have posted about it on the Village pump. Same problem here, Netscape 4.x is unable to render the captcha, maybe because of its file name. It's also impossible to load it again for analysis. With more limited browsers it would be a hopeless case to start with, m:User:Omniplex 89.51.16.165 14:46, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Large 1bit PNG image problem

I uploaded a large map and it dispalyed fine on the Special Upload page but I tried to view it again and the image page is now blank. If I click the download high res version link i get an image cannot be displayed because it has errors!

Any body got any idea what the problem is? It is a big file 1.9MB 1 bit PNG.

Sorry, the problem is when I try to link to the image from an article in wikipedia. If you go to the article on Kilkenny http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilkenny ,go down to the history paragraph and click on the link to the map of Kilkenny circa 1780- it won't display! Any ideas? Thumbnailing of PNGs is limited to about 12 Megapixels - thumbnailing larger PNGs uses too much RAM. If you use a larger PNG, it will be served to your browser "as is" - the browser then downloads the entire image (which may take quite long) and does the scaling, which may fail for large images, or bog down your box.

A workaround is to upload the full scal image first, then replace it by a scaled down version smaller than 12 megapixels. That way, the full scale version is available in the history, but thumbnailing still works. But it would be preferrable to use SVG for this type of image anyway. -- Duesentrieb^(?!) 10:38, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Why doesn't the new account signup page load?

The new account signup page doen't load at all for me, neither in Internet Explorer 7 nor Firefox 1.5? I just created an account on Wikipedia, and would like an account here to upload my photos. I am having an identical problem at other Wiki sites such as Wiktionary, Wikinews, etc.

This is a fact of Wikimedia, at the moment you have to create a separate account for each different wiki you want to use. Hopefully we will one day migrate to the "universal login". pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:18, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

Upload an article

I would like to upload a couple of articles, but every time I try I get the message that I can't upload a ".doc" (Word) file. How do I upload my files?

Upload of Word documents is not allowed, mainly for three reasons: a) Word documents can contain malicious code (viruses, etc), b) Word uses a propriatery, undocumented file format and c) all text should be on wiki pages, freely editable online. File uploads are for media files (images, audio, video), not for text documents. Furthermore, Wikimedia Commons is a media repository, not a place for textual content beyond media descriptions and navigation.

So: Articles are not uploaded, they are created and edited - for textual content, Commons is not a good place, please have a look at en:Wikipedia, en:Wikibooks, or en:Wikisource. Please tell us what exactly you want to upload, and why. If you must upload a text file here, you can do that in PDF format - but as I said, it's trongly discuraged.

More SVG shenanigans

Okay, I'll be honest. I barely know what an SVG is, much less how to create one. But I just had to go download Inkscape and upload this: Image:Asclepius_staff.svg. I've seen other SVG files with a PNG preview on their image page-- is that supposed to be the case with my image? Did I, in my ignorance, do something wrong? Rendering fails because the image declares height="1e-006" - i.e. one millionth of a pixel. I don't know why that is, though...

Connexion terminated

Whilst endeavouring to upload an ogg sound file (to wit a Dutch-language article comprising about 23 MB), the connexion will keep breaking off halfway. I can't say with certainty because I have not seen any previous discussion about this. But, look in Category:Passports -- as long as they are there, you can probably also upload your picture.

Database error and resulting glitch

I just attempted to upload Image:Global-local-alignment.png, and got a database error in response. So the file exists, but doesn't appear in my contributions or have any summary/licensing/other text, and I couldn't upload over it to correct the problem. The image was re-uploaded at Image:Global-local-alignment2.png and is now linked from en.wiki under that name, so no need to move the correct version, but it might be worth removing the botched original. Good lord I'm incompetent. I think my brain is having database errors now. In fixing it I made the same mistake backwards. The correct one (really!) is at Image:Global-local-alignment2.png and the old Image:Global-local-alignment.png has a mismatched sequence. If you want to delete that one that would be great. Ok. I've uploaded the correct version (g-l-a2.png) over the incorrect version at g-l-a.png, so that one was correct as well. Afterwards I deleted g-l-a2.png, so the image with the most logical name (g-l-a.png) has been retained. I have some photographs in 72dpi. The originals are in a dutch archiv. I asked permission. They wrote me "The image can be used free of charge as long as you mention the ***". if the images can be used by anyone for any pupose under those conditions, the appropriate tag would be {{Attribution}}. Otherwise, they are not appropriate for Commons. Alexander Turnbull Library, New Zealand

I just have received permission from this library to use certain pictures from their website on Wikipedia - here is an example of one of the images I have permission for [3]]. They have just these conditions attached 'a condition of using images from the Alexander Turnbull Library is that they are correctly cited. The citation must include, where applicable, the photographer or artist, the title given by the creator, the name of the collection and the Library's reference number, such as the collection number and negative number. The citation must also include the words 'Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, New Zealand.' ' Just wondering how I should tag the images when I upload them? Most of the photos I have permission for are dated around 1905 or before. They are very useful source for New Zealand historical photos and Maori photos too. Note that the permission must be given to everyone for any purpose - if that is the case, the correct tag would be {{Attribution}} or {{Copyrighted free use provided that}} with an appropriate condition. Please use Commons:Email templates when requesting permission, to avoid any ambiguity.

Photos of x-rays

Is it OK to upload a photo I have taken of an x-ray? The purpose of the photo is to illustrate a common medical condition. I have access to the x-ray where I work, but I am not the owner of the clinic. There is no personal information about the patient visible in the photo. Just for clarification, I am a veterinarian. I did not get permission from the clients to take the photo, but they do not "own" the x-ray. --Joelmills 01:40, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

They are x-rays of animals. I created the photos, but not the x-rays. I guess it is similar to taking a photo of a 2 dimensional work, which I know does not transfer copyright, but x-rays aren't exactly copyrighted anyway. --Joelmills 16:47, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

So is the answer "no"? It's not OK to upload these photos? I guess it comes down to whether or not the x-ray is copyrighted. If it is copyrighted, I would think the copyright would be owned by the clinic, so I would have no right to upload the photo. Image from fr with attribution-type licence

I uploaded Image:Hotel de ville de saint ouen.JPG but wasn't sure what I was supposed to say regarding the licence. At the French Wikipedia (fr:Image:Hotel de ville de saint ouen.JPG) the licence information reads "L'utilisation de cette image est libre à la seule condition de mentionner son auteur, son origine." Roughly, I translate that as "Use of this image is free on the sole condition of mentioning its author and origin." It sounds like a Creative Commons licence but that is not mentioned explicitly, so what licence should I have selected in uploading the image to Commons? --Mathew5000 06:34, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Mug shots

When I uploaded Image:Kozlowskimug1.jpg, I did not know that the status of mugshots was disputed. Should I use it for now on the article for Dennis Kozlowski on Wikipedia, or should I have it listed for speedy deletion, as I have done? I think you should upload the image. That something is disputed only means that someone disputes it, but it hasn't been settled yet. Possibly, it will be disallowed in some future, but that's not certain. / Fred Chess 08:55, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Death penalty

I uploaded Image:Death Penalty World Map2.png per the instructions given me when I received an error about my account being too new to upload a new version of Image:Death Penalty World Map.png. This version, in addition to fixing the Belarus mistake, properly indicates the rather confused status in the United States: states where there is no death penalty statute (ergo it has not been abolished per se) or where it has not been used since 1967 are now orange, while Kansas and New York, where courts have ruled that the states' death penalty statutes are unconstitutional, are blue. I linked to it on the original, but I didn't upload it over the top because I find the US states being marked the same as countries somewhat misleading. Perhaps they should have a different coloured border to indicate this, or a dotted white line instead? Plus, isn't every other country's colour based on their federal law? A few questions....

Galleries. I find conflicting information on what they are supposed to be. The "first steps" guide says; "Adding images and other kinds of media files to galleries is preferred over categories as they can keep more information and look more polished to an outsider." while another policy mentioning the matter says: "Galleries (on article pages) are useful as showcasing the best, most illustrative, informative and interesting images of a category."

Should galleries be reserved for the best pictures in a category, or should all pictures in a category be added to the corresponding gallery for easy access?

Also, about crowded categories, specificly the "Concert" category. this includes live pictures of various artists. Seeing as this category is getting a bit crowded, would it be wrong to create sub-categories for the artists with a significant amount of pictures? For instance, there are 19 Jad Wio pictures there. I am also planning to upload around 11 Roger Waters concert pictures. For these amounts of pictures, would sub categories be appropriate? Thanks Clq 00:18, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

I stand by the second statement, which is possibly something I actually wrote. :) But they're not "Reserved for only the best (unless you plan to obsessively maintain a certain gallery and category, which should probably be discouraged...). Should all pictures in a category be added to the gallery? Well, then you have to wonder what is the purpose of simply duplicating that information. If you're actually adding useful information by presenting them in a gallery, such as more specific grouping, contrast/compare groups, or just adding useful captions, then that's fine. But if you're just adding them plain in one huge chunk gallery then I would say don't waste your time. For an example of a very good gallery, see Xinjiang. I quite like the "teaser" approach with "for more images, see..." links to categories.

Seeing as this category is getting a bit crowded, would it be wrong to create sub-categories for the artists with a significant amount of pictures? Yes, that is a very good idea. Or the alternative is to add them all to that category, and create a gallery for just those images. Either approach is fine. 11 pictures is fine. If you think there's potential for more images then it's fine to create a category even for as few as, say, 4 images. e.g. Category:Tennis players from France. Especially if the parent category (such as Category:Tennis players or Category:concerts) is very broad.

The most important thing is that all images are on at least one gallery OR in at least one category. We have enough trouble enforcing that to make many more specific demands than that. :)

Someone might just also want to change the wording in the Commons:First_steps/Sorting: So it is crucial to add your media files to specific gallery articles on Commons and/or adding it to a specific category otherwise your valuable media files won’t get used that much. Question about licences

I could probably figure this out with some reading, but since this is such a basic question I figure somebody will know right away, so I'm going to ask here: If I were to use image(s) from the wikimedia commons in a piece of software I am developing, would I be able to licence that software under the GPL? Also, would I be within my rights to release this software in a closed source but freeware fashion? Finally, would I be able to release the software using a non copyleft licence provided I documented what images were from the commons and made them available as required, seperatly from the bulk of my program? Please ask if any clarification is needed about my questions, it's late and I might not have been clear enough.

I'm not 100% positive, but I think you can. I don't belive the program would be considered "derivative work" of any icon images etc it uses. And the GFDL allows for GFDL work to be part of collections that are not GFDL. You just have to make clear which images are under the GFDL, who created them and where you got them from. You must also include a copy of the GFDL itself.

However, to be safe, just ask the creator to release the icons under GPL or give you permission to use them under other terms. -- Duesentrieb^(?!) 08:20, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Anyone told me, wiki(p|m)edia is a great thing to collect common knowledge - uh, uh, i just found out that it's more about getting a lesson in law and reading more about license than ever done with any M$ software package.

Now, please: i'd really love to give (yet german) readers of de:Cubitus (Comic) an impression of what character i'm writing about. After even causing speed-deletes of other people's very past uploads (i hope this was what Commons was about) i now anonymized my photography. Finally no one can recognize any of the original (copyrighted) artwork, but at least get a coarse idea of what the character MAY look like (it's white and black and yellow, period). I'd like to request to substitute the copyrighted version with the schematic, anonymized one.

Thanks for the comment. Please don't mind me doubting that "recognizeability" is the only criteria. Think about a pixeled version of Spiderman-or-Superman. Red/blueish pixels, a head, 2 arms, 2 legs. Which artist's copyright is infringed? Can a "coarse idea" of a charakter be copyrighted? If i would ask a friend to "draw a fat white dog with a big nose and a yellow tail", he'd probably create another Cubitus-style charakter -- and it would be his own copyrighted artwork then!

So where do we cross the border..? IMHO we (and the courts) have to talk about copyrighteable details -- not about "ideas"... (compareable to music works. Not anything containing a selection of special notes in a special order is equal to an original, copyright protected work!)

What's wrong with the gallery?

I created a a gallery of my images a couple of days ago and everything was fine, but now a lot of the pictures are missing. Nothing has been changed in the page, and the images still exist here in the Commons, but in the gallery I only see a caption and an empty box for most of the images. I can see some pictures in the galleries, jusy not all. I have had the same problem on Wikipedia. All other images are fine, but when I go to a category containing the images that I can't see in the gallery, I also can't see them there, although the link to the image page is fine. When I use the gallery tab at the top of my user page, again the links are all fine, but the images that don't show up are the same that don't appear in the gallery I created. They are all .JPG. For example, one image is [[Image:Iris cyst.JPG]]. I'm not sure what you mean by file location (they are all here on Commons). Just to be clear, it seems that everybody else can see these fine, just not me. I even used a different computer, and they all appeared normally. I cleared the cache a couple of times already. When I go to the image page, I can see it no problem. But the thing is, at the gallery there is no functioning link to the image page, so I can't click through to the original image. There is just an empty box, with the caption underneath. Uploading PNG files

Image size and other question

Commons newbie here. How large (in kB) should an image I made with my digital camera roughly be? The original jpg from the camera is rougly 900 kB. Which just seems too big (might be wrong there). It's probably on the help files somewhere but couldn't find it.

Uploads are limited to 20 MB if I'm right; anyway, always use the highest resolution possible I'd advise. I looked at your uploads and they seeme fine to me (although I wouln't link the date, commons != wikipedia), so keep up the good work! NielsF 00:46, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Obsolete Images

I've uploaded a PNG of the Phylogenetic Tree image to replace the scruffy looking JPEG.

Is there a standard way of marking images as obsolete? I tried "Category:Obsolete images" but that seems to be a wikipedia thing.

The original JPEG is used in about 50 different pages in many different wikis. Is there any way of updating them automatically to use the PNG?

License of USGS image on Microsoft Windows Live Local Virtual Earth

I believe a "screenshot" (image cropped to show just the stadium in this case) of images on Microsoft Windows Live Local Virtual Earth should be allowed on Wikimedia Commons, but I'm not sure and figured I should ask first. Image I'd like to use (source): [5]. Since it says "Image Courtsey of USGS" in the bottom right, then the image belongs to the USGS, and then public domain. But there's also the (c)2006 Microsoft Corporation which I believe it really protecting the software used to search/obtain the image. Can someone clarify if I can upload an image of the stadium to Wikimedia Commons? And for future reference, can any image generated from this service, as long as it is only the satellite image portion (ie, all the surrounding items are cropped) be used as long as the "Image coutsey of USGS" is maintained in the bottom right of the screen? Definitely no. Screenshots don't take any new copyright - the only copyright that exists is of the original program. So therefore only screenshots of open source software are OK. I disagree: if no components of the program itself are shown in teh screenshot, but only free material shown by the program, thh image is fine - for example, a screenshot of wikipedia as renderd by Internet Explorer is OK if you crop away all the toolbarse and other controls.

Cannot upload replacement image.

I'm trying to upload K5876-18.jpg (caution, large file) to replace Image:Cherry tree blossoms.jpg. (It's the original 300dpi version of the image.) When I upload it with that destination filename, I get a red message saying, ".jpg‎" is not an allowed file format. See Commons:File types for more information. I'm reasonably certain that .jpg files are allowed. Am I doing something wrong? Appropriate image tag

I'm aiming to write an article over at Wikipedia on the WWI magazine The War Illustrated, but I'm not sure whether the images I'm hoping to use qualify under Template:PD-old or whether I should be using fair use and uploading them to Wikipedia instead. I make this work, it's based on this public domain NASA pic hosted at commons, the pic is about a NASA emblem. But when i was reading the guidelines regarding the use of NASA material, i found this point:
"12. NASA emblems should be reproduced only from original reproduction proofs, transparencies, or computer files available from NASA Headquarters. Please be advised that approval must be granted by the Public Services Division (see above) before any reproduction materials can be obtained.".

Images that are on commons can be modified at will - or they should be deleted from commons. NASA material is PD in general, but there are restrictions for the use of NASA "emblems"; As far as I know, mission logos are not "emblems" - only the official "NASA meatball" and perhaps a few more. It is a serious answer: if both versions are acceptable by commons policy, then both should be available at commons, under different names. Music album

Hi! Am I breaking any copyrigth by using a image of a cd album? If so, and I can't download from internet: If I take a picture with my digital camof a cd and post it, is that ok? I rather use the first one if allowed...

it would only be ok, in both cases, if the cover art was in the public domain (i.e. the artist has been dead for more than 70 years) or it's under a free license (given explicitely by the artist). For details, see Commons:Licensing. -- Duesentrieb^(?!) 22:46, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

In general, most album covers are copyrighted and they cannot be uploaded to the Commons. However, as Duesentrieb said, if the album art is freely licensed, it can be uploaded here just fine. Whether or not you have the original image file or you take a photograph or scan doesn't matter--in both cases the file/photograph/scan would have the same copyright as the album cover. ~MDD4696 14:48, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Help: Upload new version problem

I prefer to solve problems on my own but unfortunately I cannot find my mistake. I have updated a picture that I had uploaded several months ago. But since I uploaded the new version (I tried it twice), the image is not displayed any more. Before uploading, I tested the SVG in MS IE, Firefox, Opera, all worked fine, I even validated the code. This is not my first SVG. But now it doesn't work any more. It would be very nice if someone could help me as it is a picture that is used on several articles. Did you use Adobe Illustrator to create the image? If so, try this: download Inkscape, open the image in Inkscape and save it as a "plain SVG". pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:29, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

The image was originally created by the use of Corel Draw. All latest edits have been done with InkSkape, the file has also been saved with InkSkape... as "plain svg". I really do not know how to solve the problem... :-( Akriesch 14:16, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Hm. Yeah, I can see it fine in Firefox. Very pretty. :) Check the bugs listed at Commons:Bugs#Image_rendering_problems. Do any of them cover possible problems with your image, do you think? If not, either open a new bug request at bugzilla:, or tell me and I will.

Also if you have access to a *nix machine, try using rsvg-view to check your SVGs before uploading them, because rsvg is the program MediaWiki uses to render them. HTH. pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:27, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

• I have a upload-probleme to. I had updated the Image:Interval diagram.svg and Bild:Tonleiter_bildlich_schema.png. The grafik has been uploaded but I can't see an effekt on the pages. And it is not a mater of the internet catch. I check with the IE and Opera. When you can see a 4#/5b, the problem seemed to be fixed. But when you only see a 4# the problem still exist. I think, the "120px-Interval_diagram.svg.png" have to be deleted but I don't know how (De En-1) --Mjchael 18:22, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Flickr copyrights

Apparently a few (at least) images were deleted because of a simple statement at the bottom of Flickr pages that says "All rights reserved." One example is Image:Sunbathe breasts.jpg. However, after a glance at Flickr's terms of use, I can't find any reference that they own the copyright to any images uploaded to their servers. Thus, "All rights reserved" probably only applies to the site design and non-uploaded content. I believe these images (one that still exists is Image:Leopard sunbathe.jpg) claimed to be released under CC BY 2.0. I don't think the "All rights reserved" text is sufficient to but the kibosh on that claim. Of course, I could be wrong, as I can't see the deleted file descriptions. =) Powers 14:10, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

If an admin deletes a picture from flicker simply because of this "all rights reserved" notice, he should get a whack with the clubat. That notice applies to the site layout, etc, not to the images uploaded, to which flickr does not have any rights.

However: The image you refer to was deleted for an entirely different reason. The deletion request by Wiggum states: Neither here nor on flickr is any hint about agreement of the pictured lady to the publication of the photograph under a free license - i.e. the person shown did not consent to publication, thus is was a violation of personality rights. Looking at the picture, I agree with that. Image:Leopard sunbathe.jpg is borderline, since it doesn't show the woman's face. ALE! did in fact use a misleading comment when deleting the image - drop him a note about it.

Also note that Flickr has many mistagged images - probably even more than we do. People take a picture of a CD cover and slap "cc-by-sa" on it - such an image is a copyvio and has to be deleted, no matter what the flickr page sais. -- Duesentrieb^(?!) 14:25, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Well, I did eventually find the deletion discussion (it's here: Commons:Deletion requests/Archives12#Image:Sunbathe breasts.jpg). It appears to me that ALE! truncated the deletion discussion (which really had no consensus yet) because of the "All rights reserved" clause. So in that respect, I don't think the deletion comment was misleading at all, but I do question the basis for deletion on those grounds. Powers 15:16, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

I don't think ALE! made a mistake: look at the Flickr page, under "additional information" on the right it says "All rights reserved". This is not a generic site notice that appears on every page, but a copyright status chosen by the user. Probably the user has retroactively changed the license, and when it was uploaded here it was CC-BY or whatever. If someone publishes an image as cc-xy then i think technically it does not chage a bit, if he later publishes it under another license. As he has the right to publish it under as many licenses he likes. Maybe a proof like a screenshot mailed to the ticket system should become mandatory for flickr uploads and the like. --Schizoschaf 20:23, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Uploading problem

Generally, this happens if you put a name without a file extension into the "target file name" box. In thatcase, leave the "target file name" field blank. Use it only if you want to rename the file during upload. -- Duesentrieb^(?!) 19:34, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Your svg contains a reference to an external jpeg file. This is not supported by MediaWiki, you should embed external files inside the svg instead. However, this svg has nothing else than the jpeg, so it would be better if you just uploaded the jpeg itself. --Para 12:42, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Description languages

How do I enter a description for an image in different languages? For example, the image Gorinchem_old_townhall.jpg from my contributions has the English description "The old Gorinchem townhall", but I'd like to add the same sentence in Dutch as well ("Het oude stadshuis van Gorinchem"). Very confused!

All i want to do is save certain topics that i have been looking at in order for me to save to disc form and take to a copier that works cuz mine doesnt. If you want to create sub-category Category:People of Sweden in Category:Sweden, you edit Category:People of Sweden and add the text "Category:Sweden" in it. When you then upload an image, add Category:People of Sweden to the image.

User wants to restrict a once given free license retroactively

Could an admin please decide, what is appropriate in this case (image was released in the public domain in March 2006, now the author wants to put it under GFDL/CC-by-sa only)? There are more such files presumably.

I really don't want to annoy the author personally (what is my impression, that I do, so far), but on the other hand I'm not willing to ignore this legal problem. So a third persons help is appreciated to clarify this case. Thanks a lot --Überraschungsbilder 23:50, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm not exaclty sure this is the way it goes, but maybe... Since the uploader is from UK, we should ask if the UK law has something like "public domain" for works by individuals. If not, there may be moral rights you can't give away, like that of being attributed as the author. The source image, on wikipedia has cc-by-2.5 on it, that it should have been loaded here with that in the first place. The author is just requesting attribution as per the original uploaded image. Though the image may have been utilised prior to this without attribution, correcting the error shouldnt be an issue, the bigger concern should be that the license was change when it was brought across from wikipedia. In my opinion there is absolutely no way to change a license to a more restrictive license subsequently. This is like making a present and demanding it back later. If we allow this to happen, a lawyer could earn much money by

1. uploading an image as public domain
2. waiting until many people have downloaded it
3. changing the license to GFDL for example
4. demanding compensation for license violation

This scenario is not unlikely to happen!

I think that maybe Commons should be more helpful to uploaders(espesially novices) and recommend the use of a GFDL/CC-by-2.5 type of license for all new images. Alternatively there should be a warning that when a PD license is selected advising the uploader that they are relinquishing all rights to the image including attribution. I can't find any mention on the center's website that the center is not only in possession of the images but also of their copyright. This comment of an author does not give the impression either. This would mean that any licence of the center was void (this one certainly is because it does not specify neither licence nor the images licenced).

Hi there. Could anyone please check the currently uploaded stuff by User:Pred? There are various images taken at Wacken Open Air, a german music event. Pictures were taken from different photographers of the german Bright Eyes Magazine. Now they are uploaded by a Danish guy, labeling them as GFDL and CC-BY-SA-2.0? Problems with using a file outside of wikipedia in power point

I have found a perfect animated gif for my evening school course power point presentation about ancient Rome. It's : http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ea/Roman_Republic_Empire_map.gif But I cannot download it as animated gif, only as bitmap or jpg. I have tried anything. I would be so grateful if anyone could help me and explain me how to download the animated files from wikimedia.

Did you tried to right-click on image and then choose Save Image As?

You could also try to do so, by right clicking on Download high resolution version link on Image:Roman Republic Empire map.gif.

Yes, I did right-click and 'save image as' with the picture and with the picture in high resolution version. The problem is, that the image is saved, but it is not animated anymore. It is saved as the first 'picture' in the animation. So, I wanted to 'Save target as', but it's not possible as it is not marked.

The animation works fine after download. Many programs don't support animated gifs - try to drag & drop the downloaded file into a borwser window. I bet you'll see an animation.

You can try to split the animation into individual "frames", using ImageMagick or some freeware windows tool (tehre must be hundrets that can do it). Trouble opening ogg. files

I have never heard of the ogg. file format before. Is it possible for me to convert them to mp3s on my Mac?

Confusion over copyright of keyboard layout screenshots

Image:Dvorak keyboard2.png is a screenshot from the Mac OS "Keyboard Viewer" — is it really ineligable for copyright? Some of the other screenshots in Category:Keyboard layouts are tagged as GFDL — they can't both be right! I'm not sure where to take this. Should I just change the tag for all those images to {{PD-ineligible}}? (I have created "replacements" for these images (such as Image:KB United States Dvorak.svg) — but they do look quite different, so I'm not even sure if I should be using {{SupersededSVG}}.) —StuartBrady 00:35, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

I would like to have the photo DeBarraFit2.jpg added to Wikimedia under the name DeBarra Mayo, which is listed as a Wikipedia article. I would like to add Wikimedia Commons to the bottom of the DeBarra Mayo article so that people can click on the link to see the photos; I have a few more photos to add that will help to clarify the article and may be useful for historical reference.

However, this image is missing some source information. Who created it - the original image, not the scan? Who is the copyright holder? What are the terms of use or what licenses has it been released under? Stuff is generally copyrighted unless you have a good reason to think otherwise. Picture update problem

Three hours ago, I updated Image:BlueLine.jpg with a revised version. The new version is correctly displayed in thumb mode everywhere, such as at w:Blue Line (Lebanon), and the high-resolution is also correct. However, the normal display still shows the old image. Isn't the normal display updated when you upload a new version of the same file? As people often click on a thumb in order to get a better look, this can cause quite a bit of confusion. I suspect it's just a cache thing. Try this: click edit on image page, then in the URL change action=edit to action=purge. Hard refresh on that URL a fe w times until a new, correct thumb is generated. pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:40, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Mistake in a picture

There is a serious mistake in this picture. The force on the left of the pulley, represented by the red arrow, is not directed vertically. Therefore this force has a vertical and a horizontal component in a cartesian system and will pull the pulley to the left: not a static but a dynamic situation. To keep a long story short: the picture will be correct when the cable (and with it the red arrow) on the left of the pulley is vertical and parallel to the cable on the right side of the pulley. (Only then will the forces be in balance.) I do not have the appropriate software to correct this picture. license question: painting image

I want to upload a painting done by a close relative. I have permission from that person to do so. What type of license do I need in order for the painter to preserve some control over the use of the image?

That depends of course of what kind of control the painter wants, if you specify that a bit more I could help you better. Please take a look at our licensing page to see which licenses are possible (for all possible licenses see this list), and keep in mind that any license here must a) allow republication and distribution, b) allow publication of derivative work and c) commercial use must be allowed. Please also be sure that when you upload the image you include an e-mail from the author, see for instance Commons:Email templates, that clearly specifies that he/she releases this image under the given license. Uploaded images not available using the Search feature

Hi. Since June I uploaded 20 photos. All are accesible with the Image:imagename photo URL, but any of them are visible when using the Search feature.
All are put in categories, and some, used in galleries and articles of the Spanish Wikipedia.

categorizing a picture: problem

Localization question

When an image on commons is referenced on Wikipedia, a mirror of the image description page is shown. Is it possible to make only the conent relevant to the language of the Wikipedia used show up?

That is, is it possible to have e.g. English and German text on the description page here, but only English text visible on the English Wikipedia and only German text on the German Wikipedia?

If the answer is "yes", I would appreciate a reply on my Wikipedia talk page, since I'll probably not be able to watch this page. Thank you.

It would be possible to make this true for you personally, by modifying your monobook.js file, but sitewide, no. A major problem holding this back is the fact that most text is not tagged by language, regardless of what it actually is. pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:08, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Romanian copyright law, Art 25: "The economic rights provided for in Articles 13, 16, 17, 18 and 21 shall last for the author's lifetime, and after his death shall be transferred by inheritance, according to civil legislation, for a period of 70 years, regardless of the date on which the work was legally disclosed to the public."

Category:Slovak ice hockey players review

I am having a hard time believing that the owner of the website which provided the pictures in Category:Slovak ice hockey players was the copyright holder. I don't believe that these images are truly free use... can anyone verify this? ~MDD4696 17:11, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Using GFDL images in educational poster

I work for an educational company and we are preparing a poster called "The Countries of Africa." The poster will be marketed to educational institutions.

I would like to use several of the GFDL pictures I have found here to help illustrate this poster, but I do not know a) whether this is legal / ethical and b) how to attribute the pictures I want to use.

I could list the individual pictures here if you want but I will not do that yet because maybe the answer is simple one way or another.

It's both legal and ethical. However, the GFDL is cumbersome for images and media files, because it requires that a copy of the GFDL be provided along with the work. Also, your poster would be a derivative work of the GFDL images, which means that your poster must in turn be licensed under the GFDL... that might hurt its marketability since people would be able to freely copy it. If you look around on Google and Commons or Wikipedia there are many pages that describe how to use the material here. ~MDD4696 01:42, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Duplicate name with en.wikipedia.org image?

Hi, I'm trying to work on en:Turkish_Delight and I uploaded what I think is a better image for the page to commons.wikipedia.org (Image:Turkish_Delight.jpg) but the page loads the image with the same name on en.wikipedia.org by default when I try to include it. Anyone know a way around this other than changing its name at commons? Sorry if this was answered elsewhere - I did look around for a solution before asking. Yes, in hindsight, that's what I should have done, but I didn't know there was an image called Turkish_Delight.jpg on en.wikipedia.org since it wasn't in use. I didn't check, but obviously should have, and I will next time. Are you going to move this picture or should I try to rename the commons image?
