SVG problem[edit]

doesnt rasterize
File:Delet.svg
ok

Same problem as reported above. im using illustrator cs2, after i updated my rail map the image failed to rasterize on the filepage, but the svg open fine.

I thought id upload the same file to another test page and was surprised to find that it rasterizes ok. there cant be anything wrong with the file as its the exact same one on both pages, but the one on the left doesnt work while the one on the right works fine. solutions anyone? --PlaneMad 07:56, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Both look fine for me. Try clearing your browser cache. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 08:32, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The thumbnails here are okay but got to the filepage. cleared my cache, tried in both opera and ie, no luck. But if you click on the blamk image, you can view the full size svg. --PlaneMad 12:34, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed it. It's just the thumbnail doesn't render properly. Seems to be bugzilla:2888, or at least caused for the same reason as that bug. You can force it to re-render by doing this:
  • Click "edit" on the image page
  • In the URL bar, change "action=edit" to "action=purge"
  • Hit Ctrl+Refresh to force new rendering of thumbnail
  • Repeat if necessary
--pfctdayelise (translate?) 15:28, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's not really clear to me how to force a re-rendering of other thumbnail sizes, though (like the one on this page). Although I note it is fine in the category view. pfctdayelise (translate?) 15:31, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And the bug strikes again Image:India map en.svg. The above procedure does not seem to work. The full size svg opens up fine. The thumbnail was fine for some time but then mysteriously stopped working, pls help -- 17:27, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
I guess you were talking about the category-size thumbnail. I got it back (by following the above procedure: note REPEAT if neccesary). pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:42, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

english[edit]

how do i set my defaut to english the page i'm trying to view is in german

Which page is it? Are you logged into an account or not?
One way to force the page to show English (which it should by default, anyway) is to hit "edit" and then in the URL, change the end of it "action=edit" to "uselang=en". pfctdayelise (translate?) 14:30, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Filename guidelines[edit]

Are there available guidelines for naming uploaded files, or do we just wing it? =) Powers 23:53, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Dbenbenn provides some tips on his userpage. There are official instructions on file descriptions, but apparently not for filenames. However, the rule of thumb is to keep it short, sweet, but nevertheless expressive. Keep numbers, dates, years, and such out of the filename, as they are seldom useful, except for special cases, like flags and maps, which make sense better with years. Strive to name the subject unambiguously in as few words as possible :) —UED77 00:09, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Be descriptive enough to avoid a nameclash (don't call your photo Sunset.jpg or Flower.jpg). I personally don't object to dates in the filename, it's reasonably common. You can use whatever language you like - English is not necessary. Some people feel a latin script should be used (ie not CJK/Arabic etc characters), but I disagree (officially, you can use whatever you want). But it should make sense whatever language you choose. pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:28, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

what links here[edit]

How do articles that use the image show up in the what links here section?Oldwildbill 12:30, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's a software feature. To make a page be listed there, you have to insert the image into that page, like this:

Is that what you want to do? pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:40, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I used the picture in an article info box. When I checked the picture and click on what links here - it said no article linking to the picture? I was just wondering how to make it happen. For example I used a map of maryland as a thumb in the article - wikipedia:1st Maryland Regiment. When I look at the map - it states no article link to it.--Oldwildbill 12:57, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, right. It's a technical limitation that "file links" only works for the same wiki, i.e. Commons articles. You can see where the image is being used over all wikis by clicking the "check usage" tab at the top of the image page. Oh but wait... it doesn't show English wikipedia usage due to a problem with that database. (Should be fixed soon.) So actually it won't give you much joy at the moment. :) You can see where the image is being used in English wikipedia by clicking the "en" tab at the top of the image page, then scrolling down to the "what links here" on that "fake" image page. pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:04, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Thought I was doing something wrong.--Oldwildbill 13:19, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

question[edit]

KimMart83.71.2.192 11:24, 9 June 2006 (UTC) Can you use images from the Commons to use in writing/ preparing articles for Wikipedia? Is it best to save to a computer and then insert into article page? Thanks[reply]

Yes. Any image at Commons can be automatically used at Wikipedia or any other Wikimedia project, as if it was already hosted there. So to insert Image:Example.jpg into an article at Wikipedia, just type something like

and it will automatically pick up the image from commons without you doing anything.
The only exception is if there is a photo already uploaded at Wikipedia with the same name -- then it will use the Wikipedia photo always, and you won't be able to use the Commons image. pfctdayelise (translate?) 11:37, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Commons is not an image hosting service, isn't it?[edit]

I think that it should be stated that images hosted on wikimedia commons shouldn't be used to be linked from other websites (no wikimedia related) without a link to the wikimedia commons page.. I asume?

Have you noticed our images being used on another website? Where?
Of course they are free to use (that's rather the point), but (A) they shouldn't hotlink and (B) in most cases they should recognise the source (us). pfctdayelise (translate?) 15:09, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

regular image not displaying[edit]

I uploaded a new version of Image:World 1898 empires colonies territory.png but the regular image isnt working. The same thing happened with several other images i loaded today (such as this). The high resolution works and also the thumbnail on wikipedia works, so it isnt a major problem, but still it looks like the image isnt there. Is this something temporary or should I try to load it again later? Thanks --Astrokey44 10:08, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed it. Rendering seems to have had some problems today and yesterday. You can force the software to redraw a thumbnail by:
  • clicking the "edit" button on the image page
  • changing the URL from "action=edit" to "action=purge"
  • hitting Ctrl+Refresh until the thumbnail renders correctly... usually repeatedly. took me about 6 goes for these ones.
I can't figure out exactly how to make it redraw other-size thumbnails, though. pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:03, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that worked, but there now seems to be some trouble with displaying the thumbnail images in the wikipedia articles - such as w:FIFA World Cup hosts the image is not displaying. This is only with these new images that were loaded or updated in the past day or so --Astrokey44 23:49, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, the devs are aware of the recent problems and are working on it. pfctdayelise (translate?) 07:57, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've had the same problems with Images uploaded the last couple of days but it has only happened to PNG images /Lokal Profil 23:28, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Scrap that, it just happened to a JPG file as well, has happened to every PNG but not every JPG though. /Lokal Profil 23:58, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it happened to me too that some of them worked but others didnt, I was only using PNG but some of them did work --Astrokey44 01:56, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can't create account to upload image[edit]

Panic over! I've now managed to create account. The problem below was resolved by turning off spyblocker which prevented security image being displayed. (For what reason, i do not know.) Hope this helps some one else.

Hi, Can you help me, Ive been trying to login using my wiki username and password to commons so i can upload an image. That didn't work so i tried to create an account particular to Commons. The form says... As a protection against automated spam, you'll need to type in the words that appear in this image to register an account: ... There is no image displayed saying anything. The image address is http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Captcha/image&wpCaptchaId=1465599669 file type unknown. I tried to just enter a username and password, but that failed to create an account.

Can you please advise me where i am going wrong? Thankyou

Sorry, I don't know what the problem with our CAPTCHAS is at the moment. I'm trying to get a solution. In the meantime, all I can suggest is, keep trying? You definitely don't have any image-blocking software installed? pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:51, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I was not able to reproduce the reported problem with SpyBlocker 8.5 or 9.3 on Windows 98 with IE 6.0. Note that the captcha (and logins in general) do require cookies to be allowed for the site. --Brion VIBBER 07:57, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another SVG rendering problem[edit]

The image http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:I-5.svg is having rendering problems on both its own page and almost every referenced page (for example the I-5 thumbnail on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_8).

I read bugzilla:2888 so I can understand what's going on however I can't figure out how to fix it completely. I did the edit=purge trick and that seemed to have fixed the Interstate 5 article image however the I-5.svg page and smaller thumbnails are still broken. I ran the CheckUsage tool on it and for en.wikipedia.org it reports "The database copy for this wiki is marked as broken, please check manually!" How can I check it manually or can an editor only do that? Fourpointsix 18:10, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I usually just klick on the text en.wikipedia.org to the left of The database copy for this wiki is marked as broken... this brings you to the info page on en.wikipedia, from there you can see the usage on english wikipedia /Lokal Profil 23:36, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but maybe I clouded things. The core problem is the I-5.svg file has broken thumbnails all over the place. What's the best way to fix this? Fourpointsix 02:08, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This is actually probably NOT bugzilla:2888 but just the fact that the last few days, the software has done a really bad job at producing thumbnails. People have posted about it on the Village pump. The dev's are looking into it so I think all we can do is sit tight and wait. pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:28, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How to register[edit]

I can't register me, because I don't see the Captcha-picture. What can I do?-- 84.44.156.27 14:33, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Make sure cookies are enabled for this site. Find out why you don't see the captcha. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 10:39, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Several people have reported this problem. The developers are aware of it but no idea how to fix it yet. Can you report what browser you use? pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:17, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Same problem here, Netscape 4.x is unable to render the captcha, maybe because of its file name. It's also impossible to load it again for analysis. With more limited browsers it would be a hopeless case to start with, m:User:Omniplex 89.51.16.165 14:46, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Large 1bit PNG image problem[edit]

I uploaded a large map and it dispalyed fine on the Special Upload page but I tried to view it again and the image page is now blank. If I click the download high res version link i get an image cannot be displayed because it has errors!

Any body got any idea what the problem is? It is a big file 1.9MB 1 bit PNG.

The image is at (or was!): http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Kilkenny_city_map_circa_1780_%282006-06-16%29.png

--Trounce 18:17, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

wow that is huge! but I was able to download it alright so i dont know why you werent--Astrokey44 05:15, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, the problem is when I try to link to the image from an article in wikipedia. If you go to the article on Kilkenny http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilkenny ,go down to the history paragraph and click on the link to the map of Kilkenny circa 1780- it won't display! Any ideas? Cheers.--Trounce 10:22, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thumbnailing of PNGs is limited to about 12 Megapixels - thumbnailing larger PNGs uses too much RAM. If you use a larger PNG, it will be served to your browser "as is" - the browser then downloads the entire image (which may take quite long) and does the scaling, which may fail for large images, or bog down your box.

A workaround is to upload the full scal image first, then replace it by a scaled down version smaller than 12 megapixels. That way, the full scale version is available in the history, but thumbnailing still works. But it would be preferrable to use SVG for this type of image anyway. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 10:38, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have checked again and its now downloading- weird! Anway that sounds like agood idea.I did'nt realise large PNGs caused problems. Thanks again for the help.--Trounce 10:53, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why doesn't the new account signup page load?[edit]

The new account signup page doen't load at all for me, neither in Internet Explorer 7 nor Firefox 1.5? I just created an account on Wikipedia, and would like an account here to upload my photos. I am having an identical problem at other Wiki sites such as Wiktionary, Wikinews, etc.

This is a fact of Wikimedia, at the moment you have to create a separate account for each different wiki you want to use. Hopefully we will one day migrate to the "universal login". pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:18, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please replace older (too large) image[edit]

I was directed to the Help desk by your program. Please eliminate "Clamtones.jpg" as it was far too large. The replacement is "Clamtones-for-wiki.jpg." Thank you. DeHypnotist

Uh, how about we fix the licensing on Image:Clamtones.jpg first. Exactly what permission did Kathryn Frederick grant? Where? pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:38, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Upload an article[edit]

I would like to upload a couple of articles, but every time I try I get the message that I can't upload a ".doc" (Word) file. How do I upload my files?

Upload of Word documents is not allowed, mainly for three reasons: a) Word documents can contain malicious code (viruses, etc), b) Word uses a propriatery, undocumented file format and c) all text should be on wiki pages, freely editable online. File uploads are for media files (images, audio, video), not for text documents. Furthermore, Wikimedia Commons is a media repository, not a place for textual content beyond media descriptions and navigation.
So: Articles are not uploaded, they are created and edited - for textual content, Commons is not a good place, please have a look at en:Wikipedia, en:Wikibooks, or en:Wikisource. Please tell us what exactly you want to upload, and why. If you must upload a text file here, you can do that in PDF format - but as I said, it's trongly discuraged.

More SVG shenanigans[edit]

Okay, I'll be honest. I barely know what an SVG is, much less how to create one. But I just had to go download Inkscape and upload this: Image:Asclepius_staff.svg. I've seen other SVG files with a PNG preview on their image page-- is that supposed to be the case with my image? Did I, in my ignorance, do something wrong? Lusanaherandraton 09:29, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rendering fails because the image declares height="1e-006" - i.e. one millionth of a pixel. I don't know why that is, though...
PS: please always post new comments to the bottom of the page. Thanks. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 10:15, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Weird. Well, I tried making the image again, and it seems okay this time. Thanks for the assistance! And sorry about the top-post. I'll move this section to the bottom and be more careful in the future. Lusanaherandraton 01:40, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Connexion terminated[edit]

Whilst endeavouring to upload an ogg sound file (to wit a Dutch-language article comprising about 23 MB), the connexion will keep breaking off halfway. Is this problem to be imputed to my personal Internet connexion or have flaws occurred in the Commons software? Best regards, Lord P in the Commons 02:32, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can I upload a picture of a passport[edit]

Hi, I took a picture of a passport. Can I upload it, or is the design of a passport copyrighted? Udv 04:47, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can't say with certainty because I have not seen any previous discussion about this. But, look in Category:Passports -- as long as they are there, you can probably also upload your picture.

Database error and resulting glitch[edit]

I just attempted to upload Image:Global-local-alignment.png, and got a database error in response. So the file exists, but doesn't appear in my contributions or have any summary/licensing/other text, and I couldn't upload over it to correct the problem. The image was re-uploaded at Image:Global-local-alignment2.png and is now linked from en.wiki under that name, so no need to move the correct version, but it might be worth removing the botched original. Opabinia regalis 04:03, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That is so weird (and cool :)). I don't know how to delete an image that doesn't exist... pfctdayelise (translate?) 07:47, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hm I now have deleted the version that looks like uploaded by Pfctdayelise but was never uploaded according to the logfiles: [2]. Strange. Arnomane 10:32, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. That really is strange. Of course the second version Image:Global-local-alignment2.png might as well get deleted too, because I was too busy puzzling over nonexistent files to notice that I left an amino acid out of my alignment, so the corrected version has reclaimed its original name. Opabinia regalis 00:50, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Deleted. NielsF 00:59, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Good lord I'm incompetent. I think my brain is having database errors now. In fixing it I made the same mistake backwards. The correct one (really!) is at Image:Global-local-alignment2.png and the old Image:Global-local-alignment.png has a mismatched sequence. If you want to delete that one that would be great. Opabinia regalis 05:01, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. I've uploaded the correct version (g-l-a2.png) over the incorrect version at g-l-a.png, so that one was correct as well. Afterwards I deleted g-l-a2.png, so the image with the most logical name (g-l-a.png) has been retained. Fixed 1 place where g-l-a2.png was used (en.wikipedia), couldn't find others through checkusage. Hope everything finally ok now. NielsF 09:58, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it was made for the sequence alignment article over there. Thanks! Opabinia regalis 01:47, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

wich license?[edit]

I have some photographs in 72dpi. The originals are in a dutch archiv. I asked permission. They wrote me "The image can be used free of charge as long as you mention the ***". Can this photographs be used on commons and under which license? Thank you to any spezalist who ansers. --Eruedin 15:30, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest you forward the email to permissions@wikimedia.org and if it is OK they will tell you what license tag to use, if it is not they will tell you what else you need. It's best to use Email templates to avoid problems. pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:06, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
if the images can be used by anyone for any pupose under those conditions, the appropriate tag would be Attribution. Otherwise, they are not appropriate for Commons. And, as Pfctdayelise said, permission mails should be forwarded to the foundation, and the boiler plate text should be used to request the permission. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 08:28, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alexander Turnbull Library, New Zealand[edit]

I just have received permission from this library to use certain pictures from their website on Wikipedia - here is an example of one of the images I have permission for [3]]. They have just these conditions attached 'a condition of using images from the Alexander Turnbull Library is that they are correctly cited. The citation must include, where applicable, the photographer or artist, the title given by the creator, the name of the collection and the Library's reference number, such as the collection number and negative number. The citation must also include the words 'Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, New Zealand.' ' Just wondering how I should tag the images when I upload them? Most of the photos I have permission for are dated around 1905 or before. They are very useful source for New Zealand historical photos and Maori photos too. Cheers Kahuroa 08:42, 29 June 2006 (UTC) en:User talk:Kahuroa[reply]

Note that the permission must be given to everyone for any purpose - if that is the case, the correct tag would be Attribution or with an appropriate condition. Please use Commons:Email templates when requesting permission, to avoid any ambiguity.
Btw: some of the images my be PD by NZ law... if so, the conditions of the archive can be ignored, and the images should be tagged accordingly. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 11:45, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Photos of x-rays[edit]

Is it OK to upload a photo I have taken of an x-ray? The purpose of the photo is to illustrate a common medical condition. I have access to the x-ray where I work, but I am not the owner of the clinic. There is no personal information about the patient visible in the photo. Just for clarification, I am a veterinarian. I did not get permission from the clients to take the photo, but they do not "own" the x-ray. --Joelmills 01:40, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

...So are they x-rays of people or animals? If they're of animals, and you created them, then I guess you would own the copyright. For people I am not as certain. pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:30, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They are x-rays of animals. I created the photos, but not the x-rays. I guess it is similar to taking a photo of a 2 dimensional work, which I know does not transfer copyright, but x-rays aren't exactly copyrighted anyway. --Joelmills 16:47, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

X-rays aren't copyrighted, what makes you say that? It's entirely possible, but in my experience most things tend to be copyrighted... pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:52, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So is the answer "no"? It's not OK to upload these photos? I guess it comes down to whether or not the x-ray is copyrighted. If it is copyrighted, I would think the copyright would be owned by the clinic, so I would have no right to upload the photo. I did a google search on x-ray copyrights and came up with squat. --Joelmills 03:23, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Permission to use[edit]

About a picture I want to upload, I was given personal permission to use it. What copyright license tag should I use? Commons caterpillar 02:31, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • You should forward the email to permissions@wikimedia.org and they will let you know if the permission is OK. Generally the best permissions will confirm release under a specific license. "Wikipedia only" permission is not strong enough. What exactly did they agree to? pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:29, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • I suggest you ask them to send you an email using Commons:Email templates agreeing to a CC-BY license (Creative Commons Attribution). Then forward that email to permissions@wikimedia.org . Yes it's a little involved but it's complete at least... also they should be aware that any 3rd party will be able to re-use the image, it's not acceptable to restrict its use to within Wikipedia. So make sure they're happy to agree to that and understand that implication. pfctdayelise (translate?) 15:12, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image from fr with attribution-type licence[edit]

I uploaded Image:Hotel de ville de saint ouen.JPG but wasn't sure what I was supposed to say regarding the licence. At the French Wikipedia (fr:Image:Hotel de ville de saint ouen.JPG) the licence information reads "L'utilisation de cette image est libre à la seule condition de mentionner son auteur, son origine." Roughly, I translate that as "Use of this image is free on the sole condition of mentioning its author and origin." It sounds like a Creative Commons licence but that is not mentioned explicitly, so what licence should I have selected in uploading the image to Commons? --Mathew5000 06:34, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mug shots[edit]

When I uploaded Image:Kozlowskimug1.jpg, I did not know that the status of mugshots was disputed. Should I use it for now on the article for Dennis Kozlowski on Wikipedia, or should I have it listed for speedy deletion, as I have done? I am posting here because I am not getting any reply at Commons talk:Licensing. Jesse Viviano 02:34, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think you should upload the image. That something is disputed only means that someone disputes it, but it hasn't been settled yet. Possibly, it will be disallowed in some future, but that's not certain. / Fred Chess 08:55, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Death penalty[edit]

I uploaded Image:Death Penalty World Map2.png per the instructions given me when I received an error about my account being too new to upload a new version of Image:Death Penalty World Map.png. This version, in addition to fixing the Belarus mistake, properly indicates the rather confused status in the United States: states where there is no death penalty statute (ergo it has not been abolished per se) or where it has not been used since 1967 are now orange, while Kansas and New York, where courts have ruled that the states' death penalty statutes are unconstitutional, are blue. (I realize the death penalty is legal at the federal US federal level, but from what I found it is not used in practice; but since it's obviously not appropriate for the whole country to be orange, I thought this best.) Paliku 08:44, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I linked to it on the original, but I didn't upload it over the top because I find the US states being marked the same as countries somewhat misleading. Perhaps they should have a different coloured border to indicate this, or a dotted white line instead? Plus, isn't every other country's colour based on their federal law? I'm not really convinced the US should be any different... --pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:59, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What licence would this copyright fit under?[edit]

I am unsure as to how a couple of images I wish to upload would be best licenced: they aren't my work but the author wishes to retain copyright and does not want them used for commercial/money-making purposes. The short but full text is here: http://www.lab.anhb.uwa.edu.au/mb140/addons/copyright.htm Thanks for your help! -- Serephine talk - 13:00, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Images on Commons must be available for commercial use. / Fred Chess 13:03, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ahhh ok, thats a shame but thankyou for your quick reply -- Serephine talk - 13:08, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
To anwer the original question: cc-by-nc-sa would be the correct license. It's not acceptable on commons however. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 14:23, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

--Isha 17:06, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you can provide a link to the image and/or article I'd know for sure, but I think that the image is uploaded only on en.wikipedia (Wikipedia en Ingles) and not on commons.wikimedia (este projecto).

This image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The copyright statement cited on the Commons page is from the Space Telescope Science Institute, http://www.stsci.edu/web/Copyright.html. The source for this image is given as http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap031103.html. On the latter page, the image is credited to "Stephen Smartt (U. Cambridge), HST, ESA, NASA", and there is a link to the original source site (follow the link under "this image"), http://hubble.esa.int/science-e/www/object/index.cfm?fobjectid=33854. Note that copyright is claimed on this site, directly below the image, and the legal disclaimer on this page says: "The contents of the ESA Science & Technology website are intended for the personal and non-commercial use of its users. [...] ESA does not grant the right to resell or redistribute any information, documents, images or material from its website". Is it still fair to assume that this is a free NASA image? --Vesta 08:06, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AFAIK no, as soon as ESA is involved it becomes non-commercial. The PD-NASA tag needs some more refinements what source can't be used at NASA. --Denniss 09:23, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That would mean that, for example, Image:NGC 1569.jpg, is also copyrighted? It was taken from hubblesite.org, where "Material credited to STScI on this site was created, authored, and/or prepared for NASA under Contract NAS5-26555. Unless otherwise specifically stated, no claim to copyright is being asserted by STScI and it may be freely used as in the public domain in accordance with NASA's contract. [...] This site also contains material generated, authored and/or prepared by individuals or institutions other than STScI, and those individuals or institutions may claim copyright.". [4] Credit for that particular image is given to "ESA, NASA and P. Anders (Göttingen University Galaxy Evolution Group, Germany)". So this is not PD either? --Vesta 10:14, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A few questions....[edit]

Galleries. I find conflicting information on what they are supposed to be. The "first steps" guide says; "Adding images and other kinds of media files to galleries is preferred over categories as they can keep more information and look more polished to an outsider." while another policy mentioning the matter says: "Galleries (on article pages) are useful as showcasing the best, most illustrative, informative and interesting images of a category."

Should galleries be reserved for the best pictures in a category, or should all pictures in a category be added to the corresponding gallery for easy access?

Also, about crowded categories, specificly the "Concert" category. this includes live pictures of various artists. Seeing as this category is getting a bit crowded, would it be wrong to create sub-categories for the artists with a significant amount of pictures? For instance, there are 19 Jad Wio pictures there. I am also planning to upload around 11 Roger Waters concert pictures. For these amounts of pictures, would sub categories be appropriate? Thanks Clq 00:18, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Adding images and other kinds of media files to galleries is preferred over categories as they can keep more information and look more polished to an outsider. Guh.... what? That's news to me. I stand by the second statement, which is possibly something I actually wrote. :) But they're not "Reserved for only the best (unless you plan to obsessively maintain a certain gallery and category, which should probably be discouraged...). Should all pictures in a category be added to the gallery? Well, then you have to wonder what is the purpose of simply duplicating that information. If you're actually adding useful information by presenting them in a gallery, such as more specific grouping, contrast/compare groups, or just adding useful captions, then that's fine. But if you're just adding them plain in one huge chunk gallery then I would say don't waste your time. For an example of a very good gallery, see Xinjiang. I quite like the "teaser" approach with "for more images, see..." links to categories.
Seeing as this category is getting a bit crowded, would it be wrong to create sub-categories for the artists with a significant amount of pictures? Yes, that is a very good idea. Or the alternative is to add them all to that category, and create a gallery for just those images. Either approach is fine. 11 pictures is fine. If you think there's potential for more images then it's fine to create a category even for as few as, say, 4 images. e.g. Category:Tennis players from France. Especially if the parent category (such as Category:Tennis players or Category:concerts) is very broad.
The most important thing is that all images are on at least one gallery OR in at least one category. We have enough trouble enforcing that to make many more specific demands than that. :)
cheers --pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:23, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Someone might just also want to change the wording in the Commons:First_steps/Sorting: So it is crucial to add your media files to specific gallery articles on Commons and/or adding it to a specific category otherwise your valuable media files won’t get used that much. Adding images and other kinds of media files to galleries is preferred over categories as they can keep more information and look more polished to an outsider. I guess this would generally be what people read first. Clq 08:27, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I will argue it out with whoever wrote it, if they read the talk page. :) --pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:40, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question about licences[edit]

I could probably figure this out with some reading, but since this is such a basic question I figure somebody will know right away, so I'm going to ask here: If I were to use image(s) from the wikimedia commons in a piece of software I am developing, would I be able to licence that software under the GPL? Also, would I be within my rights to release this software in a closed source but freeware fashion? Finally, would I be able to release the software using a non copyleft licence provided I documented what images were from the commons and made them available as required, seperatly from the bulk of my program? Please ask if any clarification is needed about my questions, it's late and I might not have been clear enough.

I'm not 100% positive, but I think you can. I don't belive the program would be considered "derivative work" of any icon images etc it uses. And the GFDL allows for GFDL work to be part of collections that are not GFDL. You just have to make clear which images are under the GFDL, who created them and where you got them from. You must also include a copy of the GFDL itself.
However, to be safe, just ask the creator to release the icons under GPL or give you permission to use them under other terms. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 08:20, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License question[edit]

I uploaded the Image:RobertFrost.jpg from the English wikipedia, which is a U.S stamp and is in the public domain, but I'm not sure I used the right license tag. Is it work of the United States Federal Government? Cult-p 17:46, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I guess that's correct. See the text at Category:United_States_stamps. Most other stamps in that category are also labelled with {tl|PD-USGov}}. NielsF 18:19, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Discuss license and move Anonymized_Cubitus.jpg to Cubitus.jpg pls?[edit]

Hey there admin folks...

Anyone told me, wiki(p|m)edia is a great thing to collect common knowledge - uh, uh, i just found out that it's more about getting a lesson in law and reading more about license than ever done with any M$ software package.

Now, please: i'd really love to give (yet german) readers of de:Cubitus (Comic) an impression of what character i'm writing about. After even causing speed-deletes of other people's very past uploads (i hope this was what Commons was about) i now anonymized my photography. Finally no one can recognize any of the original (copyrighted) artwork, but at least get a coarse idea of what the character MAY look like (it's white and black and yellow, period). I'd like to request to substitute the copyrighted version with the schematic, anonymized one.

Thanks, even for doing OR discussing it! --Cubitus 21:01, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I fear both images have to be deleted. Character copyright is a bitch: either the character recognizable and thus copyrighted, or the image is useless :/ -- Duesentrieb(?!) 09:31, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the comment. Please don't mind me doubting that "recognizeability" is the only criteria. Think about a pixeled version of Spiderman-or-Superman. Red/blueish pixels, a head, 2 arms, 2 legs. Which artist's copyright is infringed? Can a "coarse idea" of a charakter be copyrighted? If i would ask a friend to "draw a fat white dog with a big nose and a yellow tail", he'd probably create another Cubitus-style charakter -- and it would be his own copyrighted artwork then!
So where do we cross the border..? IMHO we (and the courts) have to talk about copyrighteable details -- not about "ideas"... (compareable to music works. Not anything containing a selection of special notes in a special order is equal to an original, copyright protected work!)

What's wrong with the gallery?[edit]

I created a a gallery of my images a couple of days ago and everything was fine, but now a lot of the pictures are missing. Nothing has been changed in the page, and the images still exist here in the Commons, but in the gallery I only see a caption and an empty box for most of the images. How do I fix this? --Joelmills 22:36, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can see all images fine. Try clearing your browser cache. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 22:44, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It didn't work, but I'm glad to hear that it's only me. --Joelmills 22:59, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just to be clear, not only is the image not present, but there is no functioning link to the image. --Joelmills 23:10, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No empty boxes here either... --Cubitus 08:00, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Someone told me they had the same problem a few days ago.
Could you please tell me what you are using for browser and what version of it, and if you have altered any settings in it? Could you then please go to Motala longwave and tell me if you have the same problem there? Thanks.
Fred Chess 11:44, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I have the same problem with Motala longwave. I use Internet Explorer 6.0, and now that I think about it, I did a Windows upgrade (XP) after putting together the gallery. Any ideas on how to fix this? --Joelmills 03:06, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can you see any gallery? Is the problem only on Commons or also on other projects like Wikipedia? (random commons gallery, Wikipedia) Can you see other images fine? --pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:26, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can see some pictures in the galleries, jusy not all. I have had the same problem on Wikipedia. All other images are fine, but when I go to a category containing the images that I can't see in the gallery, I also can't see them there, although the link to the image page is fine. When I use the gallery tab at the top of my user page, again the links are all fine, but the images that don't show up are the same that don't appear in the gallery I created. Hope that all makes sense. --Joelmills 22:08, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well what are the file names, what are the file types? What are the file locations? (do links) We need a bit more info to be able to narrow this down. pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:02, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They are all .JPG. For example, one image is . I'm not sure what you mean by file location (they are all here on Commons). Just to be clear, it seems that everybody else can see these fine, just not me. I even used a different computer, and they all appeared normally. Also, images I have added to the gallery since the problem began - some appear normally, some don't. --Joelmills 02:22, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When you click through to the original files, full-size, can you see them then? Have you tried clearing your cache? It could just be broken thumbnail renderings. pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:04, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I cleared the cache a couple of times already. When I go to the image page, I can see it no problem. But the thing is, at the gallery there is no functioning link to the image page, so I can't click through to the original image. There is just an empty box, with the caption underneath. Not that black and white box you get when when you make a mistake putting in the file name, just a rectangle (thin lined). --Joelmills 04:33, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I uploaded a screenshot of what I'm seeing. Hopefully, you will also be able to see it. Image:Gallery problem.JPG. --Joelmills 04:53, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can you load this image? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b6/Corneal_ulcer.JPG/120px-Corneal_ulcer.JPG It's the direct URL of one of the missing thumbnails. pfctdayelise (translate?) 07:41, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
(Try pressing Ctrl+Refresh about 5 times, if it doesn't work the first time, let me know if that works) pfctdayelise (translate?) 07:41, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am fairly certain it is a browser issue. Joel, do you run Internet Explorer v6.0 2900 (you can check in the Help menu -> bottom selection)?

I can load that image no problem, and it is IE v6.0 2900. --Joelmills 17:38, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is something wrong with IE v6.0 2900. You're the second user with this problem.
I don't have the possibility to check with the tech people right now on IRC, but perhaps someone else can?

Uploading PNG files[edit]

Hi,

I'm trying to upload a PNG file (I've done it many times before) and I get the error:

".PNG‎‎" is not an allowed file format. See Commons:File types for more information.

The link doesn't work and I don't know what the problem is. Help!

Sukh 00:00, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Since someone was able to upload a PMG quite recently, I'm not sure what the problem could be... what is the exact file name you were trying to use? Is the file corrupted? Does changing it to lowercase "png" make a difference? pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:55, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean Image:Ek onkar.png? It seems OK now. BTW please add a description to this image, the title is not a sufficient description. pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:06, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image size and other question[edit]

Commons newbie here. How large (in kB) should an image I made with my digital camera roughly be? The original jpg from the camera is rougly 900 kB. Which just seems too big (might be wrong there). It's probably on the help files somewhere but couldn't find it.

Another question. I recently uploaded some files, could perhaps someone look at some and check if I did it all correctly. Just to be sure. Thanks. Garion96 00:15, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Uploads are limited to 20 MB if I'm right; anyway, always use the highest resolution possible I'd advise. I looked at your uploads and they seeme fine to me (although I wouln't link the date, commons != wikipedia), so keep up the good work! NielsF 00:46, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply and checking. Concerning wikifying dates, I thought that since Commons also has date settings in preferences it might be handy. Garion96 01:52, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Obsolete Images[edit]

I've uploaded a PNG of the Phylogenetic Tree image to replace the scruffy looking JPEG.

Is there a standard way of marking images as obsolete? I tried "Category:Obsolete images" but that seems to be a wikipedia thing.

The original JPEG is used in about 50 different pages in many different wikis. Is there any way of updating them automatically to use the PNG?

Reilly 16:17, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately updating cannot be done automatically. You or someone else will have to do it by hand. You could use the template Superseded on the JPEG and/or nominate it on Commons:Deletion requests. NielsF 23:38, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I've added Superseded. Before I start editing, is it possible to create a single user account that works across all the wikis? Reilly 00:19, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No (or not yet), sorry. pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:37, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License of USGS image on Microsoft Windows Live Local Virtual Earth[edit]

I believe a "screenshot" (image cropped to show just the stadium in this case) of images on Microsoft Windows Live Local Virtual Earth should be allowed on Wikimedia Commons, but I'm not sure and figured I should ask first. Image I'd like to use (source): [5]. Since it says "Image Courtsey of USGS" in the bottom right, then the image belongs to the USGS, and then public domain. But there's also the (c)2006 Microsoft Corporation which I believe it really protecting the software used to search/obtain the image. Can someone clarify if I can upload an image of the stadium to Wikimedia Commons? And for future reference, can any image generated from this service, as long as it is only the satellite image portion (ie, all the surrounding items are cropped) be used as long as the "Image coutsey of USGS" is maintained in the bottom right of the screen? Thank you. --MECU 15:24, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely no. Screenshots don't take any new copyright - the only copyright that exists is of the original program. So therefore only screenshots of open source software are OK. There are some open-source equivalents, usually; have a look around w:Wikipedia:Maps. pfctdayelise (translate?) 15:54, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thank you. What about an image from [6]? I used their viewer so it should be okay, right? --MECU 16:39, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think so. And you can use PD-USGov-USGS. pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:11, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree: if no components of the program itself are shown in teh screenshot, but only free material shown by the program, thh image is fine - for example, a screenshot of wikipedia as renderd by Internet Explorer is OK if you crop away all the toolbarse and other controls.
That is to say: if what is shown is a plain, unprocessed image created by the US government, then it's PD, screenshot or no. But if and how this image was processed, I can not tell. To be safe, use open/free sources and programs only. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 18:25, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As an afterthought: using such a "free" screenshot of something shown in a microsoft program may be sgainst MS's terms of use or EULA. But that does not touch the copyright, if the content shown was not created by MS. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 18:27, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the copyright of the data itself also matters. Sorry I didn't mention that. pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:11, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cannot upload replacement image.[edit]

I'm trying to upload K5876-18.jpg (caution, large file) to replace Image:Cherry tree blossoms.jpg. (It's the original 300dpi version of the image.) When I upload it with that destination filename, I get a red message saying, ".jpg‎" is not an allowed file format. See Commons:File types for more information. I'm reasonably certain that .jpg files are allowed. Am I doing something wrong? I replaced Image:Boll weevil.jpg earlier today from another JPEG on the same site, and it didn't give me that complaint. Grendelkhan 15:39, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What is the file size? We have a 20mb limit. pfctdayelise (translate?) 15:49, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's 766kb. And I'd expect to get a message about a filesize limit if it were too large, in any case. Grendelkhan 18:59, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have had no problem replacing the image with the full resolution version. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 19:59, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I guess my browser must have been... temporarily cursed, or something like that. Grendelkhan 23:23, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Appropriate image tag[edit]

I'm aiming to write an article over at Wikipedia on the WWI magazine The War Illustrated, but I'm not sure whether the images I'm hoping to use qualify under Template:PD-old or whether I should be using fair use and uploading them to Wikipedia instead. The images in question are here (I note also that the Commons already has a couple of drawings from the magazine already, with outdated tags). Thanks, Ziggurat 00:40, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I've uploaded one to Wikipedia as a fair-use magazine cover, but I'd still love to have a picture of a WWI ski-bound bayonet charge to add to the Commons! Ziggurat 03:27, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hm. Published in London. Seems like they're probably still on copyright then (and those illustrations should probably be deleted, unless I've missed something). Sorry. :( --pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:40, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nuts, I was afraid of that. I wonder if the other two images were migrated over as part of the Victoria Cross reference migration? The articles in which they appear (en:John Lynn and en:John George Smyth) both were. Anyway, thankfully magazine covers are still fair use, so the main image can be retained in Wikipedia. Thanks for your help! Ziggurat 21:01, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Search Engine[edit]

I'm kind of confused about what the search engine hits and doesn't. For example, searching "pathetique" will hit , but searching "Für Elise" or "Bagatelle in A minor" won't hit . I'm just curious as to why this happens. Thanks Gaodifan 01:17, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:FurElise.ogg was uploaded today... the search index isn't updated automatically, only every few weeks or months. So you will have to wait a while. pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:26, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

I need help with my images...

Please read Commons:First steps and m:Help:Images. If that is not sufficient, please ask a concrete question. Please sign you contributions in discussions with -- ~~~~ (two minuses, four twiddles), this will generate a nice signature. That makes it easier to see who said what, when. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 16:18, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nonworking Userpage redirect[edit]

I'd like to redirect my user page to my wikipedia user page, as I only want to have one user page (I rarely use Wikimedia Commons). But, it doesn't seem to be working -- did I do it wrong? Banaticus 17:07, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, you didn't do anything wrong, automatic redirects between projects simply aren't possible. You do however have a huge link on your userpage here because of the redirect, I'd guess that's good enough for people to find you ;-). NielsF 18:29, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it's possible in theory, but it's turned off. Redirects from one wiki to anouther are considered confusing: when I click on your signature, I don't expect to end up on another project, where I don't have an account and perhaps don't understand the interface language. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 20:31, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Aah, I've learnt something as well. NielsF 22:51, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I make this work, it's based on this public domain NASA pic hosted at commons, the pic is about a NASA emblem. But when i was reading the guidelines regarding the use of NASA material, i found this point:
"12. NASA emblems should be reproduced only from original reproduction proofs, transparencies, or computer files available from NASA Headquarters. Please be advised that approval must be granted by the Public Services Division (see above) before any reproduction materials can be obtained.".

Should i delete my image?, isn't any image at commons able to be modified?. --Martin Rizzo 13:23, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Images that are on commons can be modified at will - or they should be deleted from commons. NASA material is PD in general, but there are restrictions for the use of NASA "emblems"; As far as I know, mission logos are not "emblems" - only the official "NASA meatball" and perhaps a few more. But i'm not entirely sure - you can probably dig up a discussion about it somewhere. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 13:50, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Consensus[edit]

What is the procedure to solve a dispute about the version of an image?--FlagUploader 21:23, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Upload one under a different name and take the fight to the talk page of the article where one of them is going to be used :P -- Duesentrieb(?!) 22:21, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And what is the serious answer?--FlagUploader 14:18, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It is a serious answer: if both versions are acceptable by commons policy, then both should be available at commons, under different names. If you think one of the versions is not acceptable because POV/misleading/plain wrong, you can bring it up on the Commons:Village pump so some more people can look at the issue. There's no official mediation procedure or anything like that here. If you can't work an issue out by yourself, ask more people to look at it. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 19:40, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, is this about Image:Flag of Italy.svg vs. Image:True Flag of Italy.svg? Apperently, the color definition was recently changed by law, right? In that case, the old and the new version should be available, each mentionen since/until when those where the official colors. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 19:44, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Music album[edit]

Hi! Am I breaking any copyrigth by using a image of a cd album? If so, and I can't download from internet: If I take a picture with my digital camof a cd and post it, is that ok? I rather use the first one if allowed...

Thanx =)--Tom2112 22:41, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

it would only be ok, in both cases, if the cover art was in the public domain (i.e. the artist has been dead for more than 70 years) or it's under a free license (given explicitely by the artist). For details, see Commons:Licensing. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 22:46, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In general, most album covers are copyrighted and they cannot be uploaded to the Commons. However, as Duesentrieb said, if the album art is freely licensed, it can be uploaded here just fine. Whether or not you have the original image file or you take a photograph or scan doesn't matter--in both cases the file/photograph/scan would have the same copyright as the album cover. ~MDD4696 14:48, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I prefer to solve problems on my own but unfortunately I cannot find my mistake. I have updated a picture that I had uploaded several months ago. But since I uploaded the new version (I tried it twice), the image is not displayed any more. Before uploading, I tested the SVG in MS IE, Firefox, Opera, all worked fine, I even validated the code. This is not my first SVG. But now it doesn't work any more. It would be very nice if someone could help me as it is a picture that is used on several articles. The Picture: Image:Epsilontensor.svg Thanks a lot! Akriesch 23:24, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Did you use Adobe Illustrator to create the image? If so, try this: download Inkscape, open the image in Inkscape and save it as a "plain SVG". pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:29, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The image was originally created by the use of Corel Draw. All latest edits have been done with InkSkape, the file has also been saved with InkSkape... as "plain svg". I really do not know how to solve the problem... :-( Akriesch 14:16, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hm. Yeah, I can see it fine in Firefox. Very pretty. :) Check the bugs listed at Commons:Bugs#Image_rendering_problems. Do any of them cover possible problems with your image, do you think? If not, either open a new bug request at bugzilla:, or tell me and I will.
Also if you have access to a *nix machine, try using rsvg-view to check your SVGs before uploading them, because rsvg is the program MediaWiki uses to render them. HTH. pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:27, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
@pfctdayelisethanks a lot. Unfortunately I have never done this before. Trying to solve the bug on my Unix machine also did not lead to solve the problem as I am not used to use the program and to work with svg at Linux yet. It would be great if you could help me! I will follow the discussion and help where possible if this is OK. Akriesch 22:31, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Did you read the bugs at Commons:Bugs#Image_rendering_problems? Do any of them seem like your bug, or not? pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:26, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If I have understood the discussion at bugzilla:5463: there seems to be a problem like this. But am I right that there is no solution referring to the discussion? Akriesch 13:10, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have a upload-probleme to. I had updated the Image:Interval diagram.svg and Bild:Tonleiter_bildlich_schema.png. The grafik has been uploaded but I can't see an effekt on the pages. And it is not a mater of the internet catch. I check with the IE and Opera. When you can see a 4#/5b, the problem seemed to be fixed. But when you only see a 4# the problem still exist. I think, the "120px-Interval_diagram.svg.png" have to be deleted but I don't know how (De En-1) --Mjchael 18:22, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr copyrights[edit]

Apparently a few (at least) images were deleted because of a simple statement at the bottom of Flickr pages that says "All rights reserved." One example is Image:Sunbathe breasts.jpg. However, after a glance at Flickr's terms of use, I can't find any reference that they own the copyright to any images uploaded to their servers. Thus, "All rights reserved" probably only applies to the site design and non-uploaded content. I believe these images (one that still exists is Image:Leopard sunbathe.jpg) claimed to be released under CC BY 2.0. I don't think the "All rights reserved" text is sufficient to but the kibosh on that claim. Of course, I could be wrong, as I can't see the deleted file descriptions. =) Powers 14:10, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If an admin deletes a picture from flicker simply because of this "all rights reserved" notice, he should get a whack with the clubat. That notice applies to the site layout, etc, not to the images uploaded, to which flickr does not have any rights.
However: The image you refer to was deleted for an entirely different reason. The deletion request by Wiggum states: Neither here nor on flickr is any hint about agreement of the pictured lady to the publication of the photograph under a free license - i.e. the person shown did not consent to publication, thus is was a violation of personality rights. Looking at the picture, I agree with that. Image:Leopard sunbathe.jpg is borderline, since it doesn't show the woman's face. ALE! did in fact use a misleading comment when deleting the image - drop him a note about it.
Also note that Flickr has many mistagged images - probably even more than we do. People take a picture of a CD cover and slap "cc-by-sa" on it - such an image is a copyvio and has to be deleted, no matter what the flickr page sais. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 14:25, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I did eventually find the deletion discussion (it's here: Commons:Deletion requests/Archives12#Image:Sunbathe breasts.jpg). It appears to me that ALE! truncated the deletion discussion (which really had no consensus yet) because of the "All rights reserved" clause. So in that respect, I don't think the deletion comment was misleading at all, but I do question the basis for deletion on those grounds. Powers 15:16, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think ALE! made a mistake: look at the Flickr page, under "additional information" on the right it says "All rights reserved". This is not a generic site notice that appears on every page, but a copyright status chosen by the user. Probably the user has retroactively changed the license, and when it was uploaded here it was CC-BY or whatever. This is happening more and more often. pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:25, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If someone publishes an image as cc-xy then i think technically it does not chage a bit, if he later publishes it under another license. As he has the right to publish it under as many licenses he likes. Maybe a proof like a screenshot mailed to the ticket system should become mandatory for flickr uploads and the like. --Schizoschaf 20:23, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading problem[edit]

I made the image with Inkscape and i save as a plain svg. Someone can help me?

I'm sorry, but something seems to have gone wrong with the upload, when I go to the image itself it's empty. Por favor, un otro vez. NielsF 01:32, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Your svg contains a reference to an external jpeg file. This is not supported by MediaWiki, you should embed external files inside the svg instead. However, this svg has nothing else than the jpeg, so it would be better if you just uploaded the jpeg itself. --Para 12:42, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Description languages[edit]

How do I enter a description for an image in different languages? For example, the image Gorinchem_old_townhall.jpg from my contributions has the English description "The old Gorinchem townhall", but I'd like to add the same sentence in Dutch as well ("Het oude stadshuis van Gorinchem"). Also, when using the search form, are these descriptions searched through? Bvankuik 08:26, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome to add description in other languages. You can do this by using

If you want to create sub-category Category:People of Sweden in Category:Sweden, you edit Category:People of Sweden and add the text "Category:Sweden" in it. When you then upload an image, add Category:People of Sweden to the image.

User wants to restrict a once given free license retroactively[edit]

Could an admin please decide, what is appropriate in this case (image was released in the public domain in March 2006, now the author wants to put it under GFDL/CC-by-sa only)? There are more such files presumably.

I really don't want to annoy the author personally (what is my impression, that I do, so far), but on the other hand I'm not willing to ignore this legal problem. So a third persons help is appreciated to clarify this case. Thanks a lot --Überraschungsbilder 23:50, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not exaclty sure this is the way it goes, but maybe... Since the uploader is from UK, we should ask if the UK law has something like "public domain" for works by individuals. If not, there may be moral rights you can't give away, like that of being attributed as the author. If this is the case, the uploader could, imho, change the license to Attribution or maybe . -Samulili 13:39, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The source image, on wikipedia has cc-by-2.5 on it, that it should have been loaded here with that in the first place. The author is just requesting attribution as per the original uploaded image. Though the image may have been utilised prior to this without attribution, correcting the error shouldnt be an issue, the bigger concern should be that the license was change when it was brought across from wikipedia. Gnangarra 16:20, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There is no source image on wikipedia anymore. It was deleted after the commons upload took place. I believe Überraschungsbilder that it was originally in the PD, so your concern about the license change is misplaced. NielsF 16:50, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Correct, NielsF. As an admin there, I'll copy what the descr. page said before deletion:
Summary
Photo of Manta Ray taken by me at Rasfari North Island, Male Atoll, Maldives
March 14th 2006.

Licensing
PD-self
I haven't seen any policies about this, but it is my personal view that we needn't bother being too strict... I don't see the big issue with changing from PD to some other allowed license....
Fred Chess 17:35, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion there is absolutely no way to change a license to a more restrictive license subsequently. This is like making a present and demanding it back later. If we allow this to happen, a lawyer could earn much money by
  1. uploading an image as public domain
  2. waiting until many people have downloaded it
  3. changing the license to GFDL for example
  4. demanding compensation for license violation
This scenario is not unlikely to happen!
--Dralon 23:19, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
the scenario wouldn't be possible as the license on the image at the time of copying was PD and subsequence changes were after that, the file history shows when the change took place. I agree as PD was the original license PD is what it has to be. Gnangarra 17:32, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think that maybe Commons should be more helpful to uploaders(espesially novices) and recommend the use of a GFDL/CC-by-2.5 type of license for all new images. Alternatively there should be a warning that when a PD license is selected advising the uploader that they are relinquishing all rights to the image including attribution. I have loads of essays sitting on my computer of varying standards. They're not really much use to anyone just sitting on my PC, and ideally I'd like to share them out on GFDL/CC-BY-SA basis. Is commons an appropriate repository for them? --Cfp 17:16, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hm. Not really. We accept source material for use in Wikisource, but that tends to be well-established works and old works. Copyright status of Cambodian photos of DC-CAM[edit]

I got an inquiry about uploading images of the Documentation Center of Cambodia which I forward to here. The documentation center has allowed use of the images at its site according to this mail exchange with User:Albeiror24:

Subject: Asking for some pictures for wikipedia
Dear Mister Youk Chhang,
DC-Cam DIRECTOR
I have been working in the development of information in Spanish about the Khmer Rouge in the Spanish Wikipedia (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juicio_a_los_Jemeres_Rojos)
It is only that I would need to complete it with some pictures for example of the Khmer Rouge leaders and others. You can check the work already done and how I have used some of my own pictures there in some links.
As it possible to get some pictures and the right to use it? Or may you tell me how can I get them?
Thank you before hand for your attention,
Albeiro Rodas (Samnang)" (originally posted here)

I can't find any mention on the center's website that the center is not only in possession of the images but also of their copyright. This comment of an author does not give the impression either. This would mean that any licence of the center was void (this one certainly is because it does not specify neither licence nor the images licenced).

I'm absolutely no expert on Cambodian copyright. From my understanding these images are copyright protected almost anywhere for at least 70 years. Are there any reasons why the images could be used at all? --Wikipeder 09:36, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Could anyone please check the currently uploaded stuff by User:Pred? There are various images taken at Wacken Open Air, a german music event. Pictures were taken from different photographers of the german Bright Eyes Magazine. Now they are uploaded by a Danish guy, labeling them as GFDL and CC-BY-SA-2.0? I think he isn't allowed to release these rights. --Polarlys 23:00, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I added No source to these images. --EugeneZelenko 15:45, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If not given by the user who uploaded the image, is there a general photo credit for an image uploaded to Wikipedia that isn't from another source?

Could you please link to whatever image you're talking about? Because generally images that have no source information whatsoever should be deleted. pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:37, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright concern[edit]

The description of Image:Pixelart-tv-iso.png says it was made by the uploader, but it looks to me like it's copied. At least, it's very similar to the pixelated isometric TVs in last holiday season's Bell Mobility print ads in Canada. Seahen 17:38, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with using a file outside of wikipedia in power point[edit]

Hello everyone,

I have found a perfect animated gif for my evening school course power point presentation about ancient Rome. It's : http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ea/Roman_Republic_Empire_map.gif But I cannot download it as animated gif, only as bitmap or jpg. I have tried anything. I would be so grateful if anyone could help me and explain me how to download the animated files from wikimedia.

Sincerely

Lilly

Did you tried to right-click on image and then choose Save Image As?
You could also try to do so, by right clicking on Download high resolution version link on Image:Roman Republic Empire map.gif.
EugeneZelenko 15:29, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I did right-click and 'save image as' with the picture and with the picture in high resolution version. The problem is, that the image is saved, but it is not animated anymore. It is saved as the first 'picture' in the animation. So, I wanted to 'Save target as', but it's not possible as it is not marked.

Lilly

The animation works fine after download. Many programs don't support animated gifs - try to drag & drop the downloaded file into a borwser window. I bet you'll see an animation.
You can try to split the animation into individual "frames", using ImageMagick or some freeware windows tool (tehre must be hundrets that can do it). You can then use the individual frames in your presentation and click through them. Try google for more on power point and animated gifs -- Duesentrieb(?!) 22:10, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jimmy Wales in the Tom Ashbrook's NPR on point show[edit]

It is an interview with the founder of Wikipedia Jimmy Wales in Tom Ashbrook's NPR on point show. This interview has been distributed as a free podcast downloadable via iTunes etc. The content of this National Public Radio show is the Wikipedia project, its history, growth and reliability. Many callers share different opinions and Jimmy Wales answers interesting questions. Can I upload the file into wikimedia commons for further use? What is the appropriate licencing? ---Jiri.pekhart 19:07, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It depends on the license of the show. If you can find evidence that this show is generally released under a free license (usually unlikely, unless the author is a particular open source/content advocate), or this show in particular has, then you can upload it here. Otherwise, no dice, sorry. pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:47, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion over copyright of keyboard layout screenshots[edit]

Image:Dvorak keyboard2.png is a screenshot from the Mac OS "Keyboard Viewer" — is it really ineligable for copyright? Should I just change the tag for all those images to PD-ineligible? Hello...I need assistance[edit]

I would like to have the photo DeBarraFit2.jpg added to Wikimedia under the name DeBarra Mayo, which is listed as a Wikipedia article. I would like to add Wikimedia Commons to the bottom of the DeBarra Mayo article so that people can click on the link to see the photos; I have a few more photos to add that will help to clarify the article and may be useful for historical reference.

DeBarra Mayo is also listed in Wikiquote.

Thank you very much for the help. :)

Hello,
You want to add Image:DeBarraFit2.jpg to w:DeBarra Mayo, is that right?
Follow the image syntax:
It produces this:
File:DeBarraFit2.jpg
Mayo in her fitness days.
However, this image is missing some source information. Who created it - the original image, not the scan? Who is the copyright holder? What are the terms of use or what licenses has it been released under? Stuff is generally copyrighted unless you have a good reason to think otherwise. If you don't, this will have to be deleted. pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:50, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Picture update problem[edit]

Three hours ago, I updated Image:BlueLine.jpg with a revised version. The new version is correctly displayed in thumb mode everywhere, such as at w:Blue Line (Lebanon), and the high-resolution is also correct. However, the normal display still shows the old image. Isn't the normal display updated when you upload a new version of the same file? As people often click on a thumb in order to get a better look, this can cause quite a bit of confusion. Thomas Blomberg 18:16, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect it's just a cache thing. Try this: click edit on image page, then in the URL change action=edit to action=purge. Hard refresh on that URL a fe w times until a new, correct thumb is generated. pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:40, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mistake in a picture[edit]

There is a serious mistake in this picture. The force on the left of the pulley, represented by the red arrow, is not directed vertically. Therefore this force has a vertical and a horizontal component in a cartesian system and will pull the pulley to the left: not a static but a dynamic situation. To keep a long story short: the picture will be correct when the cable (and with it the red arrow) on the left of the pulley is vertical and parallel to the cable on the right side of the pulley. (Only then will the forces be in balance.) I do not have the appropriate software to correct this picture. Maybe someone here has the right software to correct this, please? --Johjak 12:54, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Talk at WP:Physics was that the picture is indeed broken in several ways, but no one has the paint program to fix it. Linas 04:16, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

license question: painting image[edit]

I want to upload a painting done by a close relative. I have permission from that person to do so. What type of license do I need in order for the painter to preserve some control over the use of the image?

That depends of course of what kind of control the painter wants, if you specify that a bit more I could help you better. Please take a look at our licensing page to see which licenses are possible (for all possible licenses see this list), and keep in mind that any license here must a) allow republication and distribution, b) allow publication of derivative work and c) commercial use must be allowed. Please also be sure that when you upload the image you include an e-mail from the author, see for instance Commons:Email templates, that clearly specifies that he/she releases this image under the given license. Please sign your posts with ~~~~, that will automatically insert your user name and a timestamp as it does for me: NielsF 02:21, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Uploaded images not available using the Search feature[edit]

Hi. Since June I uploaded 20 photos. All are accesible with the Image:imagename photo URL, but any of them are visible when using the Search feature.
All are put in categories, and some, used in galleries and articles of the Spanish Wikipedia.
Thanks. Hectorblanco 12:31, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See answer to Commons:Help desk#Search Engine. --EugeneZelenko 14:19, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much. I searched but not realised on this answer this morning. Then, I will mantain a gallery of my contributed photos in my spanish user page.

categorizing a picture: problem[edit]

Hello everybody, I'd like to categorize a picture I uploaded today (Image:Warsaw Trade Tower 112005.JPG) but unfortunately I can't find out how to perform that since there's no "edit" button over the "Summary" field. Anyone can help me? Best regards, --grippenn 21:10, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, grippen. There's an edit button on the top of the page, but I've added the relevant sections, so you can edit it inside as well. Hope this helps. Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 22:21, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot Bastique, it worked. --grippenn 09:03, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Localization question[edit]

When an image on commons is referenced on Wikipedia, a mirror of the image description page is shown. Is it possible to make only the conent relevant to the language of the Wikipedia used show up?

That is, is it possible to have e.g. English and German text on the description page here, but only English text visible on the English Wikipedia and only German text on the German Wikipedia?

If the answer is "yes", I would appreciate a reply on my Wikipedia talk page, since I'll probably not be able to watch this page. Thank you.

Yours faithfully, Shinobu 00:30, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It would be possible to make this true for you personally, by modifying your monobook.js file, but sitewide, no. A major problem holding this back is the fact that most text is not tagged by language, regardless of what it actually is. pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:08, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Romanian photos prior to 1989[edit]

Comments needed!

See User:Oliviu1's gallery. The user claims that photos from communist Romania are not covered by copyright, as there was not such a ting as a copyright law in Romaina back then. Is he correct? --Kjetil_r 23:23, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that this is the case for all Soviet images. Linas 04:20, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Romanian copyright law, Art 25: "The economic rights provided for in Articles 13, 16, 17, 18 and 21 shall last for the author's lifetime, and after his death shall be transferred by inheritance, according to civil legislation, for a period of 70 years, regardless of the date on which the work was legally disclosed to the public."
As Romaina has signed the Bern convention, I guess all works are put under copyright again. --Kjetil_r 20:23, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Linking or Embedding Photos in article[edit]

Please help this user!

Hi -- new user here. Trying to figure out how to link, or preferably embed, two photos I just uploaded to an article I just posted.

The photos are 'johnlake.jpg' and 'johnlake9-67.jpg'

The article is 'John Lake'

Thanks. If you'd like to just go ahead and do it, please feel free.

I am having a hard time believing that the owner of the website which provided the pictures in Category:Slovak ice hockey players was the copyright holder. I don't believe that these images are truly free use... can anyone verify this? ~MDD4696 17:11, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I understood Slovak, image description contains only answer, not question. So terms of use are unknown. Somebody should send them Commons:Email templates or re-request terms of use. --EugeneZelenko 14:49, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Using GFDL images in educational poster[edit]

I work for an educational company and we are preparing a poster called "The Countries of Africa." The poster will be marketed to educational institutions.

I would like to use several of the GFDL pictures I have found here to help illustrate this poster, but I do not know a) whether this is legal / ethical and b) how to attribute the pictures I want to use.

I could list the individual pictures here if you want but I will not do that yet because maybe the answer is simple one way or another.

Thank you. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.95.179.175 (talk • contribs) at 18:53, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's both legal and ethical. However, the GFDL is cumbersome for images and media files, because it requires that a copy of the GFDL be provided along with the work. Also, your poster would be a derivative work of the GFDL images, which means that your poster must in turn be licensed under the GFDL... that might hurt its marketability since people would be able to freely copy it. If you look around on Google and Commons or Wikipedia there are many pages that describe how to use the material here. ~MDD4696 01:42, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate name with en.wikipedia.org image?[edit]

Hi, I'm trying to work on en:Turkish_Delight and I uploaded what I think is a better image for the page to commons.wikipedia.org (Image:Turkish_Delight.jpg) but the page loads the image with the same name on en.wikipedia.org by default when I try to include it. Anyone know a way around this other than changing its name at commons? Sorry if this was answered elsewhere - I did look around for a solution before asking. Themightyquill 05:05, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just ask some sysop on en.wiki to move that picture. --Nux (talk) 06:14, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I?ll do it. Drini 22:31, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
On the other hand, why did you upload the same filename? Couldn't you just used a differnet name and then changed the article on en: to point to the new image? (just food for thought for the next time) Drini 22:34, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, in hindsight, that's what I should have done, but I didn't know there was an image called Turkish_Delight.jpg on en.wikipedia.org since it wasn't in use. I didn't check, but obviously should have, and I will next time. Are you going to move this picture or should I try to rename the commons image? Thanks. - Themightyquill 01:25, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Better rename the Commons image, imho. So upload it with another name and tag the original veriosn with Duplicate. NielsF 01:28, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
