Volcanic fissure eruption graphics[edit]

As I am rather often working with volcanism reps. Iceland related issues, I would very much like to get integrated esp. in pages on Icelandic volcanism one / some good graphic/s on volcanic fissure eruptions. There are very good graphics for most other types of eruptions (Valued image set: Types of volcanic eruptions), but there is only one for fissure eruptions at Kilauea, which are different from many Icelandic types. The Icelandic fissure eruptions are not only on the flanks of shield volcanoes, but also (and more often) take place at up to rather big distances from the volcanic center. Perhaps somebody among you would like to design some graphics for these types of eruptions. Reykholt (talk) 15:39, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

PS: A fissure eruption on a shield volcano would look like this one: . Reykholt (talk) 15:49, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Animated gif with different delays between images[edit]

I uploaded a new version of File:Tianeptine3DanBS.gif that had different delays beetween images, because the old version is very turbulent and it's hard to keep the fast rotating structure in mind. But after the upload, the five ne long delays have gone. What has gone wrong? Can someone fix the issue?

Dosenfant (talk) 11:32, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Haven't taken a look at the image page, but it could just be a caching issue... AnonMoos (talk) 11:49, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it was, I overlooked the obvious... Thanks! Dosenfant (talk) 13:38, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree AnonMoos. But would it not be better to slow only the general fps? -- Perhelion (talk) 12:51, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I tried also slowing down the general fps, but the stuttering was awfull and got worse with further reduction of the frame rate, but still the molecule structure was't easy to trace. So I kept the general fps and just added some five pauses. Dosenfant (talk)

SVG improvements for MediaWiki toolbar[edit]

Hi, recently a Google Code In student worked on converting a few of the WikiEditor toolbar icons into SVG. These are now live in the software, but really could use a bit of refinement as mentioned in bugzilla:35342. If anyone is able to spare a bit of time to polish the work of the student, that would be really appreciated by the volunteer developers. TheDJ (talk) 08:35, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Replied there that you may get more comments if the SVG code were available as a separate file, for those who don't feel like putting themselves through a crash course in Gerrit/Git... AnonMoos (talk) 13:45, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What is the background on this topic, how does it work? -- Perhelion (talk) 07:56, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You click on it and it takes you to the edit page for this month's GVP archive, apparently. I don't know what the use of these links is, since new requests are usually added at this page, but the automated links have been there for more than seven years. SiBr4 (talk) 08:36, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that is (a bit?) mystical, see on this /May 2014 (someone used this link) this topic don't appear here, nobody see it!?! Maybe User:AnonMoos knows more? -- Perhelion (talk) 08:50, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I mean this a outdated archive-technique, as we can see in the given Diff-link there is a transclusion of the actual subpage. It seems AnonMoos does archive everything manually!? So we let it be manually or automatically? (I see now this discussion should be better placed on the talk-page.) I suggest to completely remove this technique by a auto-archive, anyway this transclusion thing also does not work. -- Perhelion (talk) 10:02, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We could also force everyone to put new requests in the subpages by month and transclude those pages here, much like at w:WP:TfD for example. Though if the subpages are only used for archiving requests, I agree it doesn't make sense to create a button for editing them. SiBr4 (talk) 11:00, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The page did formerly transclude the monthly subpage when this section was added, but doesn't anymore. Apparently someone removed this invocation somewhere in the page history. SiBr4 (talk) 11:13, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
FYI it was this edit which removed the subpage transclusion. SiBr4 (talk) 11:19, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's been here since I started working with the page, and I never fully understood it, and never changed it. I do the bulk of the archiving manually. AnonMoos (talk) 02:31, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks your both for a bit clarifying. The (above) mentioned transclusion technique like at w:WP:TfD don't work for common discussion-pages as here, because nobody has it (the new subpage) on his Watchlist. It "could" be helpful for archiving, but this also don't work, because this {{LOCALMONTHNAME}} {{LOCALYEAR}} dynamic variables (and the links) must be laid in each users responsibility, that has absolutely no reliability. So I suggest the install the system from COM:VP (bit smaller)!? -- Perhelion (talk) 12:32, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I usually have the current month's subpage on my watchlist (even if it's so far non-existent), though this doesn't guarantee that I'll always respond quickly to questions left there...
On the general Commons:Village pump page, they have a system of archive bots with complex parameters; I'm not sure how that would work with the much more low-volume forum here... AnonMoos (talk) 13:50, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Perhelion and AnonMoos: Can't bots archive discussions by month? The automatic archive setup, which User:ArchiveBot follows, has an option to, used at the main Village Pump. I don't think it'd be hard to enable automatic archiving here too. SiBr4 (talk) 09:25, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes we do so, this bots are full flexible to configure (it seems only in the first view complex), we made it as in the common VP and use the same bot. The archive form/structure can we let (the same) as it is. I could do this, but only later, or your as your want. -- Perhelion (talk) 13:40, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I just did, changing the inactivity time limit to two weeks and correcting the archive names to the "Commons:Graphics village pump/Month Year" pattern that is already used. SiBr4 (talk) 14:12, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I changed a bit the values (from the high frequented VP)
@AnonMoos: how could you made none existing pages on your watchlist? -- Perhelion (talk) 11:23, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Either clicking the "add to watchlist" star on the pages themselves or adding them using the raw watchlist editor. Both work for non-existing pages as well as existing ones. SiBr4 (talk) 12:53, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Is not much more sensible to link (per already given parameter) to the true originated from Graphic Lab? Is there also a template special for the Commons Graphic Lab?? -- Perhelion (talk) 07:37, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Since having to specify the exact link for each transclusion is not an option, the trick is to link to the correct page (for example w:de:WP:Fotowerkstatt) given only the language code (for example "de"). I don't know whether there is a way to invoke site links from Wikidata; if there isn't I think a {{#switch}} case is the only possibility. SiBr4 (talk) 14:50, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@SiBr4: yes per switch that would be a good way! So we have no template for the Commons-Graphic-Lab? Then I would made this as default value!? -- Perhelion (talk) 11:50, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Using links from Wikidata should really be possible but unfortunately doesn't seem to be yet. I'd keep the English WP as the default link because it has always been the default. SiBr4 (talk) 12:50, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the default link is the Graphic Lab of the language the tag is in. I'll make EnWP the default for the "This image is from the Graphic Lab" link in all languages, and keep the respective language GL link for the second sentence "you can make requests too". SiBr4 (talk) 13:34, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok let keep the En. as default. But Wikidata-links are not necessary, we take the current Wiki-link until the Wikidata-links are fixed, that is not the problem! Let's roll! -- Perhelion (talk) 14:17, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I just got AWB access here on Commons, which I can use to update the language subpages of Template:Graphic Lab to use the switch case from Template:Graphic Lab/link. SiBr4 (talk) 15:30, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done It works great, many thanks man! -- Perhelion 17:41, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, when I made these changes ten days ago, I skipped the Hebrew version since it uses right-to-left text and is therefore rather prone to bidi problems. Changing that template would take somewhat more than just Google Translate to figure out which part means "Graphic Lab" :) SiBr4 (talk) 18:15, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

{{merge from|Commons talk:Graphic Lab|Commons_talk:Graphic_Lab#Commons:Graphics_village_pump}}

This talk page should be completely merged and redirected to this one. As we can see this:

Notice This page is for discussion of the Graphic Lab page in general. Please place any requests in the appropriate workshop page. Commons:Graphics village pump is available for other discussions. Thank you.

notice is completely ignored and the page misused. Keep it simple, keep it central / collectively. -- Perhelion (talk) 10:42, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

De-activated the merge request. As told by Patrick87 in the parallel discussion at the other page, this page is for questions about images, while Commons talk:Graphic Lab is for discussion relating to the Graphic Lab itself. SiBr4 (talk) 18:22, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
