I uploaded a version without a watermark. And why not take this picture, it is also without a watermark. --Pustekuchen2014 (talk) 13:33, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
Hello to all, since I could not answer the question of image rights, I made a request on the German side of the Wikipedia which is concerned with copyright issues. User Martin K. was kind enough to give a brief summary of the essential aspects. Since the discussion was in German, but in my opinion is important enough to make them accessible to other interested parties, I take the liberty to give the following translation of this section:
  • The actual motive is in the public domain because its copyright Jean-Pierre Moynet died more than 70 years ago. Therefore no copyright or exclusive rights for this image can be claimed - not even by Shutterstock and Antonio Abrignani. In this sense the copyright notice in question is a copyfraud (in German 'Schutzrechtsberühmung').
  • Irrespective of this, ancillary rights might occur at reproduction of this work. If this is really the case, varies from country to country and depends on of reproduction and original.
  • The Wikimedia denies such rights for 2D templates categorically because it would prevent the use of any digital stocks of public domain works - which finally all have to be digitized in any way. Whether this point of view may consist in court, is controversial, but has been used a hundred times and I know of no case in which any archive/stock would have successfully sued against.
  • Add to this, these ancillary rights are different from country to country; according to the country of protection principle in the network theoretically any legal situation could occur. Since it would be practically non-tradable, the WMF has decided on Commons, to take into account only the legal situation in the country of origin and the United States in each case. In the de.Wikipedia only the right in Germany, Austria and Switzerland is considered. This attitude is already a compromise.
In his statement he goes on: "In my humble amateur opinion, the scan of a 2-dimensional template is not a photograph within the meaning of § 72 the German Copyright Act and is therefore subject not to the ancillary rights. This attitude is consistent with the under "Wikipedia:Image Rights - Not protectable Photos (Reproductions) - 2-D rule" cited judgment."
I hope that this contribution will not only help me. Best regards MagentaGreen (talk) 08:15, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Could someone please help cleaning these images. Please upload the new ones over the old ones. Thanks in advance, --Yann (talk) 20:28, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s):

Hi Yann, do you really need this high resolution? An image size reduced to 80% might also be sufficient? This would make it possible to view the picture in landscape mode on a 19 inch monitor at 1440 x 900 pixels in size. Furthermore, the image processing would be possible with reasonable effort. In this case an upload of new images over the old ones would not be desirable, and a new version of each image should be created. Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 13:04, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
Well, the idea is that it should be possible to print the book. But maybe 1440 x 900 would be sufficient for that. I don't think duplicating images is good anyway. Just upload over the old ones. Thanks, Yann (talk) 13:23, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

I really don't like the change in contrast. It makes the image look really odd. --KAVEBEAR (talk) 16:51, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
I think that's your very subjective view. In fact, the contrast compared to the original version is greater. Depths are blacker, highlights appear almost lighter. Both are necessary in order to emphasize details. When in doubt, please compare it with suitable software by yourself or go to the eye doctor. Sincerely, MagentaGreen (talk) 18:18, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
I tend to agree with KAVEBEAR. You can only replace so much contrast before it begins to look odd. And the unsharp masking was less than subtle for such a little picture. Subjectively speaking, of course. *wink* Regards, nagualdesign (talk) 01:33, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

~300 articles about artists

Request:

Several years ago, user:Pantalaskas produced a lengthy video series about modern art, for which he filmed interviews with ~300 notable modern artists. He subsequently took screenshots from the interviews and uploaded them to Commons; full permission is on file with OTRS. Unfortunately, in order to make the interviews more visually interesting, he included very large and detailed images of their art in the background. For copyright reasons, this needs to be removed: >150 of these need to have their backgrounds either cropped, or judiciously blurred -- I'm told that Lens Blur will make it look like intentional depth of field. (Oh, and then the old diffs will need to be revdel'd, but that's another issue.)
There's 290 images in the category, plus one in a subcategory, but there's a few dozen that don't need to be processed because of blank backgrounds. Would anyone like to help out? -- DS (talk) 01:09, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s):

I'm willing to help with some of them. It would be helpful to me (and other graphists) if someone would make a priority list of the images currently in active use. Also, it might be a good idea to post this request to Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop as well.
Since there are so many images to address, a way to insure attention over time might be to periodically insert some of the images into Anonymous requests after having posted the general request. --Kevjonesin (talk) 09:38, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
They're almost all in active use; let's start with File:Abeilleclaude.png, File:Aesbacherarthur.png, File:Abraham Hadad (1995).png, file:Alain Dupuis (1999).png, file:Alain Satié (1995).png, File:Albert Birtran (1997).png, and File:Albert Chaminade (1995).png. Then file:Albert Féraud (1995).png isn't in active use, and file:Alberto Guzman.(1995).png doesn't need editing because it's a black background. DS (talk) 18:45, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
The video quality some years ago was far away of what we see today. Additionally the pics are very small, some have have strange colours. That makes it not easy. And after I've done the first images I ask myself if it's a really god idea. The photos document the video series. They were exactly so. Should we manipulate these documents?--Hic et nunc (talk) 09:27, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
No, the resolution is too small and the art is not the focus of the image, therefore, de minimus would apply. DS, ask about it at the copyright desk, it should be fine as it is. Penyulap 13:29, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
Wait, I forgot how much those people waffle on and on and on and on and on and on and on. (Sorry you get the idea) just nominate one of the images for deletion, and you'll get fast, short, concise opinions about it. Penyulap 13:32, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
I don't believe the background images are de minimis here, in most cases - although they aren't the primary focus, they are still prominently featured, and usually take up more image area than the artists themselves. Resolution factors into fair use determinations but not into de minimis, which has more to do with how large a role it plays in the image as a whole. I think the backgrounds need to be removed or blurred, but to prioritize them, I would start with ones that feature artworks that are distinctive, complete, and complex. Note that old revisions will have to be deleted. Dcoetzee (talk) 22:21, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

I should also point out, the images aren't intended to represent the video documentary series. They're intended to represent the artists. DS (talk) 11:47, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

  • According to Commons:De minimis blurring the backgrounds will suffice. Since the videos are old and low quality then most may not need editing. The guideline also states that if the artist is the subject of use and they are categorized by artist and not the work then that should be satisfy de min. If graphists wish to crop and blur then that is up to them. If it were me, I wouldn't do any of them unless they are taken to DR. In that case then we could edit each one according to consensus of the DRs.--Canoe1967 (talk) 16:42, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Help remove/attenuate dust (white speckling under full magnification/resolution)

Article(s):en:Phillip Sekaquaptewa

Request:

At full magnification, dust is readily apparent. It occurs to me, that first stab at correcting the image would be to apply a mask in Photoshop to screen the color white. This would be simple to test. The signal contains no white. Even the whitest item here is a pink abalone shell in the bolo tie. Nothing else in the signal is white. Thank you for helping! • While this is a better digital image of this tree, based on the raw metadata of the two image files the current version appears to not to have been derived from the originally posted digital image, but is from an altogether different image file of the same scene which had been created 0:01:52 earlier on March 8, 2007. Centpacrr (talk) 09:42, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
  • I do not understand it properly, so a brief description of the operational steps: Since the image error mainly affects blue screen areas: Layer Style > Blending Options Default > Blend if "Blue" > Drag the slider to a value corresponding in order to wipe blue from the image. The next step is to replace the sky, then rotate the image slightly counter-clockwise and retouch missing image parts. Nonetheless it's not a good picture and it would be nice to find a better quality. Best regards --MagentaGreen (talk) 13:49, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Has anyone at least a suggestion? Thanks, Yann (talk) 06:15, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
Hello @Yann: , Thank you for proposing me for Auto Patrol Rights. I see you are very keen to improve the images of Romain Rolland. I understand if you've made only a very careful retouching so far. But I think if you decided to retouch, one should also be as consistently as possible. If do not like my approach, please feel free enough to revert it. Best regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 09:55, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
@MagentaGreen: Thanks, but why did you scale down the images? Regards, Yann (talk) 09:58, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
@Yann: , I have taken the original version of the file as the basis of my editing and saw no reason to enlarge the image, especially as the quality would not be improved. If you still feel it's important - this should not be a problem. Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 10:28, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
@MagentaGreen: The files are not enlarged. You cannot get this resolution straight away. You have to use a trick to bypass the viewer at the source. I think it is even possible to get up to 5000 x 7000 pixels from the source. See e.g. File:Gandhi et Mme Sarojini Naïdu.jpg. If you want to try see Commons:Gallica#Pictures. Regards, Yann (talk) 10:31, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
@Yann: , I'm sorry, but I'm not convinced. Do you really want a reason for this step back with the number of pixels?
A comparison:
Link Pixel Size
The source file 1032 x 1054 166 KB
Your 1. Upload 1.749 × 1.287 317 KB
My editing 1.696 × 1.232 655 KB
The actual version 3.428 × 2.432 3,21 MB
There are three options now:
1) I blow up my version on completely unnecessary 3,428 × 2,432 pixels - that I will not do.
2) I'll upload my version under a new name - too bad, but that it boils down probably.
3) You pull back your revert - that would be reasonable and least of work for me.
Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 12:23, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
@MagentaGreen: If you want to restore them, start from the real source (around 7000 x 5000 pixels). I got them back from Gallica, and uploaded them for you: File:Romain Rolland de face au balcon, Meurisse, 1914, source.png, File:Romain Rolland au balcon, Meurisse, 1914, source.png. And I repeat, these are not enlarged files. And I think that the result should not be smaller than 3000 x 2000 pixels. Regards, Yann (talk) 16:06, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
Sorry @Yann: , it's a bit annoying that you only now provide a file of this quality. Nevertheless, it will be necessary to reduce the size of the file. Here, a print resolution of 300 dpi would be desirable (currently 72 dpi), so that the effort pays off at least for printing. However, since I do not think that many users want to print the image, I think my version, is currently most appropriate at least for the screen, since I also can not understand in what an image size of 3000 x 2000 pixels would improve anything. So I will, as already indicated upload my version under a new name. A processing of the source file is for me at best in a few years in question, when the technical possibilities will have improved accordingly. Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 17:28, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Missing chunk of face

Article(s): Not in any article yet, but I'm planning one, and we might as well get this patched up anyway.

Request:

Picture was scanned in from a 1903 newspaper that had a small but noticeable hole in it; could anyone smooth that over, perhaps fix the other little spots where ink flaked off, and maybe even blank out the traces of ink from elsewhere in the newspaper? Thanks. --DS (talk) 14:49, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s):

Damage is rather extensive; not sure at lot could be done. Anyway these newspaper prints are all rather poor quality. "Chronicling America" has two more photos of her from the Washington Post, 1902 and from the Saint Paul Globe, 1902, but why not use one of the cabinet cards from the UK National Portrait gallery instead? Lupo 06:01, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
Ah, that's disappointing. Anyway, "why not use one of [these]" - because I was doing a little project of scraping those old newspapers for their PD photos and editorial cartoons. The prints may not be great quality, but in some cases they're the only images we have. You're right, though -- the newspaper prints appear to be derivatives of the topmost image in the cabinet card list. DS (talk) 12:00, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

Advice/assistance on cleaning up lithograph scans

Article(s): Serpent Mound, Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley, etc.

Request: I have been planning to add some more images to Commons from Squier and Davis's Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley. My motivation is that Squier and Davis remains a key primary source for most of these midwest and southeast archeological sites, many of which are sufficiently notable for Wikipedia coverage. And the Squier and Davis images are a great way to quickly appreciate what was present at the site before (most) European disturbance.

I have been working with a 2011 scan of the entire original edition that is available for download as a 268 MiB PDF from the World Digital Library. From there I can create PNG versions of individual plates, and (using Paint.NET) can crop them, rotate them and so on. I can also convert these to grayscale. From there my next step has been to adjust the black/white levels to get a white background while still preserving the fine detail of the lines. I'm having some success, but shadows from the scanning are darker than the lightest detail I want to retain.

Can some kind person take a look at the example images above and (1) see if you can edit the original image (center) to create a better result than the one at the right, and (2) give me some pointers on how to do that job myself? Thanks, Rupert Clayton (talk) 16:52, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s):

I figured out how to change it. If not to your liking just revert it ~ R.T.G 12:26, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
Although the removal of the black ring around the coin is an improvement, that version left some distracting dark area at the left center, to the left of the coin. To me, something distracting like that bothers me more than the now-removed ring did. It should be white there, the same as on the three other sides of the images. Can you clean it up there? If not, it's OK, but in that case I'll probably revert to the earlier version. Steve Morgan (talk) 13:41, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
That's now the closest I can get it the way I do it. I just put a circle around it and painted the edges white but there is still a bit of black either side that I just couldn't bring any tighter without actually leaving some of the coin outside the circle which would have deleted part of the coin itself. I think it would be better if it was taken on a white background. ~ R.T.G 15:47, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
That looks good to me. By the way, it was taken on a white background (white paper), but for some reason, when I take photos like that, my camera makes the (white) paper come out looking light brown/tan. I have tried several different settings on my camera, and I have not found a solution, and my photo application (iPhoto) is not able to correct it afterward, either. However, I am not asking for advice on that problem, because this page is not the place for that. Steve Morgan (talk) 04:51, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
You are here for the right reason. You can talk about whatever you want as freedom, in the restricted (good) sense, is half of what these projects are about. And to me, if the coin is not sunk into brown card in a display mount, then it must be the shadow of the flash against the edge of the coin, so I guess to fix that you'd need to light it from two or even three sides (instead of flashing), possibly with diffused light... a lot of investment for a picture of a coin, but I am not a trained artist so that's not a professional opinion. But no matter, someone can eventually paint the edges soft by hand and ring it off again and it will look spot on. If you are interested in trying different graphics apps you might try the GIMP (free) or, my personal hidden gem fave, Project Dogwaffle (cheap when on sale) (but PD is more of a painting app than a photoshop whereas the gimp is a fully functional photoshop and pencil app, just a bit less intuitive). ~ R.T.G 08:45, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, but that is more trouble than I am willing to go to. (By the way, this was not a flash photo, but the flash photos I tried were even worse, in the lighting of the coin itself.) This was the first coin photo I have taken for Wikimedia/Wikipedia, and I am not planning to do many more (if any). Steve Morgan (talk) 11:27, 13 September 2014 (UTC)

This could be an option. Please revert if not satisfied. Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 14:29, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
MagentaGreen, thanks for your attention, but this became totally artificial, and created some chromatic aberrations. Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton (talk) 16:38, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
Well, then I do not know what you are expecting. Could you please be a bit more precise? In addition, chromatic aberration results from a distortion due to an inaccuracy of the lens and not of the software. Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 19:45, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
The question is very simple, there is a way to improve that photo?
Shoot it in a different angle, increase light, decrease light, change exposition, change aperture...
Balance in more warm/cold colour, put more vibrancy...
Ore it's ok, it's a good quality image? Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton (talk) 23:52, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, Yann (talk) 20:00, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Yes we can recover exif data--Pierpao.lo (listening) 18:20, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Yann I means that I can retouch the PNG files, save it in JPEG, copy the exif data in the retouched JPEG and upload both PNG and JPEG files. PNG does not support EXIF. I wrote something about this problem in Help:PNG.
That would be great. Thanks, Yann (talk) 15:06, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

The de-skewing is great, but it is a little stretched out—compare it with the image it's intended to replace on the template. It might also look best if the tall central pavilion is in the centre of the composition. Ham (talk) 19:13, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

To the left of the fatalities list are various details regarding the fire; I suppose that can stay. To the right, however, are some other news stories which had nothing to do with the fire in question. Sorry but no offense and thanks for the effort. Trying to be as polite as possible here...Can anybody else do a better job without the great contrast change and brightening? Thanks.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 07:54, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
@KAVEBEAR: I´m sorry too, but I think it's neither purposeful nor particularly polite when you are not trying to debate on the result with the last editor, but immediately after the edit is done, calling for another, who should do a better job.
One can talk about everything. For example, about the areas in which very concretely the image is too bright. I can agree with darken the facial area and have changed that in the meantime. On the other hand, it is normal if the image becomes brighter when a "Clean up" is required. I would appreciate it if you could be more precise in both the request and the subsequent criticism (with you hardly avoidable). Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 08:51, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
I have replaced it with a copy of MagentaGreens "BW restored" version with some softening of the facial area. I believe it looks much clearer. ~ R.T.G 19:03, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
@RTG: Sorry, but your editing looks like a fake and the softening rather like dirt. The fine strokes results from the technology used by the illustrator and therefore need not be blurred. On the contrary, they should be preserved, because it's not a photograph.

New photo montages of Seoul needed

This section was archived on a request by: Kevjonesin (talk) 14:53, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Article(s): Between them these two are used in about 35 different language versions of the Wikipedias for their respective articles on Seoul

Request: Hi all, we need new photo-montages of Seoul suitable for use in infoboxes, the two widely used one in the wikipedias both contain non free content, File:Seoul landmark picture 2.jpg contains three images that have been deleted, and File:Seoul montage 2013.jpg is unfree as there is no FoP in South Korea and the N Seoul Tower is included in the montage. We need either to create a new photo montage from scratch that is clean FoP wise, or remove from the two we have those elements which are not free. My preference would be to rework File:Seoul landmark picture 2.jpg or to create a new work, as the copyright of individual elements in File:Seoul montage 2013.jpg is unclear. Any takers? Thanks in advance.--KTo288 (talk) 20:26, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Article(s):

Request:

This is an interesting hill whatever way you look at it. But when I put it in the article and it appears as a thumb, the turbines disappear. I can't just paint a blue sky in because the shading on the mountain would be obvious. I can't just cut to a close up of one turbine because then the picture is fairly unnotable with no hill in it. I think if the turbines were more visible in the thumbnail it would be nice art for the article. ~ R.T.G 02:00, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s):

✓ Done Just a suggestion. Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 07:43, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
@MagentaGreen: I'm amazed at the amount of improvement you have made to the image. I think if it was uploaded separately it could improve the en:Image editing#Contrast change and brightening section, but I think nothing but a blistering day or a closer perspective would really make those things stand out. It's like the moon. It's huge until you take a picture of it. ~ R.T.G 18:48, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Despite the attempt to separate the contrast of color processing, it is not easy to edit separately these two aspects. Since I was not even suburb, I have to rely ultimately on other photos in the net (e.g. here) and on feedback on the color scheme. Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 21:11, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

Did an extra edit. Sky is more dramatic but I'm not sure if its any better. Amada44  talk to me 14:20, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

@Amada44: Great colour improvement. Amazed again. I tried that one in the article. Great example between the 3 pictures of what is possible ~ R.T.G 14:53, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
