Following is a selection of license templates, primarily for materials from Sweden and Finland, but including the most common or recommended license templates for self-created materials. Lists of license templates, which should be complete, can be found in Commons:Copyright tags.

Templates for user-created material[edit]

Released or completely free works[edit]

Note that according to Swedish and Finnish (and many other countries) law it is impossible to completely abstain from the so-called moral rights and that the legal significance of this template is therefore unclear.

  • {{PD-self}}: when the author holds the copyright and uploads the work themselves
Public domain I, the copyright holder of this work, release this work into the public domain. This applies worldwide.
In some countries this may not be legally possible; if so:
I grant anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.
  • {{PD-user|username}}: when another Commons user is the author and you upload a file the other user has released as the copyright holder
Public domain This work has been released into the public domain by its author, username. This applies worldwide.

Public domain This work has been released into the public domain by its author, username at Swedish Wikipedia. This applies worldwide.
In some countries this may not be legally possible; if so:
username grants anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.
  • {{PD-user-w|user=username|language=langcode|project=projcode}}: when a user on any Wikimedia project is the author and you upload a file that they have released as the copyright holder. For the Swedish-language Wikipedia, the project code is "w" and the language code "sv". For many projects there are special templates, such as {{PD-user-sv}}. The template code is for the case (2010) somewhat broken: it should be possible to also enter the user's real name and the project name should be translated automatically.
This work has been released into the public domain by its author, username, at the Swedish Wikipedia project. This applies worldwide.

In case this is not legally possible:
username grants anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.

  • {{PD-author|author|explanation}}: when uploading a file released by the author who is not a user on any Wikimedia project. The template should also contain or be accompanied by an explanation, for example in the form of a link to the author's website where they state that the work has been released completely freely.
Public domain This work has been released into the public domain by its author, author. This applies worldwide.
In some countries this may not be legally possible; if so:

  • {{PD-because|explanation}}: when uploading works that are not protected by copyright, for some reason for which one did not find the appropriate template (more templates can be found at Commons:Copyright tags).
Public domain
This file is in the public domain because [explanation]

This template must not be used to dedicate an uploader's own work to the public domain; CC0 should be used instead.

This work must carry justifications for free usability in both the United States and its country of origin.

Works released under standard free licenses[edit]

A recommended license is Creative Commons' CC-BY-SA-4.0. GFDL on its own is not recommended.

  • When you yourself are the author, several licenses can be combined in one template, for example {{self|CC-BY-SA-4.0|GFDL}} (six different licenses can be specified, see {{Self}} for additional parameters, e.g. for the user's own name).

Works released under less common free licenses[edit]

See Commons:Copyright tags.

Templates related to Sweden[edit]

These templates are mainly for

  • some commonly used Swedish works that are free to use because their copyright has expired and
  • certain works by authorities that have never received copyright protection or which have been released by the authority in question.

{{PD-Sweden-photo}} is for older Swedish photos whose copyright expired (notice the difference between photographic works and photographic images).

{{Insignia-Sweden}} is a warning for Swedish heraldic weapon images: the insignia are protected by legislation regardless of copyright. It is only with regard to the latter that the weapons are under free license..

COM:TAG Sweden should list these templates and possibly some more.

Svenska Familj-Journalen[edit]

Public domain This image comes from the Swedish journal Svenska Familj-Journalen (1862-1887). The copyrights for that journal have expired and this image is in the public domain.

This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published (or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office) before January 1, 1929.

Nordens Flora[edit]

Public domain This image is in the public domain because the copyrights of the original work of art have expired. It is a reproduction of a painting by the Swedish botanist C. A. M. Lindman (1856–1928), taken from his book(s) Bilder ur Nordens Flora (first edition published 1901–1905, supplemented edition 1917–1926?).

See Projekt Runeberg for more information and for the source scans, and biolib.de/MPIPZ for processed image versions.

Public domain

The author died in 1928, so this work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 95 years or fewer.

This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published (or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office) before January 1, 1929.

Nordisk Familjebok[edit]

Public domain
This image was first published in the 1st (1876–1899), 2nd (1904–1926) or 3rd (1923–1937) edition of Nordisk familjebok. The copyrights for that book have expired and this image is in the public domain, because images had no named authors and the book was published more than 70 years ago.
Public domain
This image (or other media file) is in the public domain because its copyright has expired and its author is anonymous.
This applies to the European Union and those countries with a copyright term of 70 years after the work was made available to the public and the author never disclosed their identity.
Important: Always mention where the image comes from, as far as possible, and make sure the author never claimed authorship.
Flag of Europe

Note: In Germany and possibly other countries, certain anonymous works published before July 1, 1995 are copyrighted until 70 years after the death of the author. See Übergangsrecht. Please use this template only if the author never claimed authorship or their authorship never became public in any other way. If the work is anonymous or pseudonymous (e.g., published only under a corporate or organization's name), use this template for images published more than 70 years ago. For a work made available to the public in the United Kingdom, please use Template:PD-UK-unknown instead.

Svenskt biografiskt handlexikon[edit]

Public domain This image comes from the online version of the Swedish Svenskt Biografiskt Handlexikon (1906). The copyrights for that journal have expired and this image is in the public domain, because images had no named authors and the lexicon was published more than 70 years ago.

Uno von Troil, image from Svenskt Biografiskt Handlexikon
Public domain
This work was published before January 1, 1929 and it is anonymous or pseudonymous due to unknown authorship. It is in the public domain in the United States as well as countries and areas where the copyright terms of anonymous or pseudonymous works are 95 years or fewer since publication.

Heraldiska vapenbilder[edit]

Note that this is just a "warning template". You also have to say which license the picture falls under.

Insignia This image shows a flag, a coat of arms, a seal or some other official insignia. The use of such symbols is restricted in many countries. These restrictions are independent of the copyright status.

Older Swedish photographs[edit]

Public domain
This Swedish photograph is in the public domain in Sweden because one of the following applies:
  • The photograph does not reach the Swedish threshold of originality (common for snapshots and journalistic photos) and was created before 1 January 1974 (SFS 1960:729, § 49a).
  • The photograph was published anonymously before 1 January 1954 and the author did not reveal their identity during the following 70 years (SFS 1960:729, § 44).

For photos in the first category created before 1969, also {{PD-1996}} usually applies. For photos in the second category published before 1929, also {{PD-US-expired}} usually applies.

If the photographer died before 1954, {{PD-old-70}} should be used instead of this tag. If the author died before 1926, also {{PD-1996}} usually applies.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States. Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 70 years: Mexico has 100 years, Jamaica has 95 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term. Honduras has a general copyright term of 75 years, but it does implement the rule of the shorter term. Copyright may extend on works created by French who died for France in World War II (more information), Russians who served in the Eastern Front of World War II (known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia) and posthumously rehabilitated victims of Soviet repressions (more information).

Road traffic signs from the Swedish Road Administration[edit]

Public domain
This image is in the public domain because it depicts a Swedish road sign produced by the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen). The image may be used freely (see Template talk:PD-Transportstyrelsen for proof). Other images than road signs published by Vägverket are not necessarily free from copyright [1].

Maritime fairway signs from the Swedish Maritime Administration[edit]

Public domain
This image is in the public domain because it depicts a Swedish maritime fairway sign produced by the Swedish Maritime Administration (Sjöfartsverket). The image may be used freely (see Template talk:PD-Sjöfartsverket for proof).

Templates related to Finland[edit]

COM:TAG Finland should list these templates and possibly some more.

Finnish photographic images[edit]

  • {{PD-Finland50}} – for Finnish photographic images that are no longer covered by copyright under Finnish law. Note the difference from photographic works. Discuss if necessary on Commons:Bybrunnen or on Wikipedia's Bildfrågor.
Public domain
This photograph is in the public domain in Finland, because either a period of 50 years has elapsed from the year of creation or the photograph was first published before 1966. The section 49a of the Finnish Copyright Act (404/1961, amended 607/2015) specifies that photographs not considered to be "works of art" become public domain 50 years after they were created. The 50 years from creation protection period came into force in 1991. Before that the protection period was 25 years from the year of first publication according to the §16 of the law of protection of photographs of 1961. Material already released to public domain according to the 1961 law remains in public domain, and therefore all photographs (but not photographic works of art) released before 1966 are in the public domain. See Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Finland for details.

If you think this picture should be considered a work of art, nominate it for deletion.
To uploader: Please provide where the image was first published and who created it.
The material with this copyright tag should not be used on the German-language Wikipedia. See Talk page of this template.

Finnish art and Finnish photographic works[edit]

Finnish authorities' decisions and opinions

  • {{PD-Finland}} – for photographic works and other Finnish art that is no longer protected by copyright under Finnish law. Corresponding to {{PD-old-70}}.
Public domain This image is in the public domain because the Finnish Copyright law of 2005 specifies that all ”works of art” become public domain 70 years after the death of the creator, or 70 years after the date of publication of an anonymous work if the identity of the author was never disclosed within 70 years from publication.

Note: Photographs which are not considered to be works of art and are created before January 1, 1966 are in the public domain (§49a). See {{PD-Finland50}} for details. This template claims only that the image is public domain in Finland. An additional template should be included to explain why the image is public domain in the United States.
To uploader: If you know, please provide where the image was first published and who created it.

Finnish authorities' decisions and opinions[edit]

  • {{PD-FinlandGov}} – for legislation, governmental decisions and statements by authorities that are not covered by copyright.
Public domain
This file is in the public domain in Finland because it is a part of a decision or a statement issued by a public authority or other public body in Finland and is not an independent work. Section 9 of the Finnish Copyright Act specifies that no copyright exists in such material. (Link to the Act)

Coats of arms for Finnish municipalities, counties and landscapes[edit]

  • {{PD-Coa-Finland}} – Heraldic arms for Finnish municipalities, counties and provinces are not covered by copyright, either because they are old, because they are part of government works or because the difference from a previous arm is too small. Do not use the template for new arms that may be covered by copyright.
Public domain
This file depicts the coat of arms of a Finnish municipality (kunta), district (maakunta) or administrative or historical province (lääni). According to Finnish copyright law and opinion of the Finnish Copyright Council (statements 1997:11 and 1998:5) these coats of arms are in the public domain. Note: The usage of coats of arms is governed by legal restrictions, independent of the copyright status of the depiction shown here.

Insignia This image shows a flag, a coat of arms, a seal or some other official insignia. The use of such symbols is restricted in many countries. These restrictions are independent of the copyright status.

Older stamps[edit]

Public domain
This postage stamp published by Posti- ja telelaitos before January 1, 1990 is in the public domain in Finland because it has been extracted from a decision or statement issued by a public authority in Finland and is not an independent work. Section 9 of the Finnish Copyright Act specifies that no copyright exists in such material. (Link to the Act). See COM:Finland#Not protected and COM:Finland#Stamps.

The document containing the decision or statement has been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons at [[:Error: |source=file name not specified.]]

This template does not apply to postage stamps first published after 1989. Because Posti- ja telelaitos was changed from an authority to a company in the beginning of 1990, postage stamps published by Posti- ja telelaitos were not anymore part of decisions by an authority. Most probably the copyright owner of postage stamps published after 1989 are Itella Oyj or the designer of them. All postage stamps first published after 1989 marked with this tag should be speedily deleted.

National archive[edit]

Public domain
This file has been downloaded from the digital archives of the National Archives of Finland (Kansallisarkisto). The National Archives states that there are no copyright or privacy protection restrictions for the use of the files in its public archives database. The files here may be Public domain either due to age or due to their being official statements or decisions of Finnish authorities as per of the Finnish copyright law.

However, the National Archives asks that when material from the National Archives is used, the following information is given [2]:

  • The name of the archive unit holding the original material
  • The archive or collection where the material is kept
  • The unit code or name of material within the collection
