Was mit den automatisch hochgeladenen Bildern noch getan werden kann/sollte:

Automatisch erzeugte Kategorien anlegen

• Die automatisch zugeordneten Kategorien unbedingt drinlassen!
• Diese sind zunächst rot und müssten noch manuell angelegt werden:
  • die „Batch“-Kategorien einfach zu Category:Images from the German Federal Archive Done
  • die „Jahr“-Kategorien zu Category:Images from the German Federal Archive und zu der einfachen Jahreskategorie, zum Beispiel Category:1968 Done
  • Die „location“-Kategorien zu Category:Images from the German Federal Archive und den entsprechenden Orts-Kategorien. Dies wird am ehesten manuelle Arbeit erfordern, weil nicht alle Orte botgestützt zugeordnet werden können (zum Beispiel „location Westfront“)
  • Bei der Kategorisierung darauf achten, dass die Sortierung sinnvoll ist. Eine Kategorie wie Category:Images from the German Federal Archive, location Polen sollte also unter "P" wie "Polen" in die Überkategorien einsortiert werden und nicht unter "I" wie "Images from...".

Kategorien zuordnen

Für die Zuordnung zu (oder Schaffung von) Kategorien liefert der Beschreibungstext meist die wichtigsten Anhaltspunkte. Man gebe einem Bild mindestens die folgenden Kategorien:

• Abgebildete Personen oder Gebäude (idealerweise mit einem Link zum Wikipedia-Artikel)
• Name des Fotografen

Es sollten mindestens alle namentlich im Beschreibungstext genannten Personen kategorisch verarbeitet werden, auch wenn man sie für wenig bekannt hält. Man täuscht sich, wie oft die Person noch auf anderen Bildern erscheint. Weiter darf man natürlich auch Menschen nach Kategorie einordnen, die man (sicher) erkennt, auch wenn sie nicht namentlich erwähnt werden.

Die (neuen) Kategorien, die einer Person gewidmet sind, sollten nach Möglichkeit bereits recht zielsicher eingeordnet werden. Ein gutes Beispiel ist Category:Alfred Dregger. Wem dies im Moment des Anlegens oder Entdeckens zu aufwändig erscheint, sollte die einer Einzelperson gewidmetete Kategorie mindestens in etwas wie Category:Politicians of Germany einordnen. Dies bietet sich vor allem für nichtdeutsche Personen an. Wenn ein Minister aus Thailand Bonn besucht hat, sollte das Bild also mindestens nach Category:Politicians of Thailand kommen. Ansonsten wäre dieses für thailändische Wikimedianer vielleicht sehr wertvolle Bild kaum auffindbar. Die genauere Zuordnung mögen dann aber die Thailänder vornehmen, die sich mit ihren Landsleuten besser auskennen.

Sinnvoll sind oft auch zeitliche oder räumliche Zuordnungen. Allerdings muss nicht jedes Bild vom CDU-Bundesparteitag Köln 1983 der Kategorie Köln zugeordnet werden; es reicht, wenn die Kategorie für diesen Parteitag in der Kategorie Köln steckt. Meist aber wird der Ortsbezug kategorisch schon per Images from the German Federal Archive by location hergestellt.

Nach einer mehr oder weniger perfekten Zuordnung sollte die Zeile '{{Uncategorized ...' gelöscht werden, es sei denn man ist sich unsicher, ob nicht doch besser noch ein weiterer Wikimedianer einen Blick darauf wirft.

Alle unkategorisierten Dateien sind der Kategorie:Images from the German Federal Archive needing categories zugeordnet (Anfang Februar 2009 über 32000).

Personenlinks aktualisieren

• Nur etwa 30 % der abgebildeten Personen haben bereits einen Link zu Wikipedia.
• Weitere Links sollten entsprechend hinzugefügt werden.

Durchsuchbarkeit

(wohl eher etwas für Entwickler)

• Metadaten auf einer Toolserver-Datenbank erfassen
• User-Interface zum Durchsuchen der Bilder, mit Links zum Bundesarchiv und zu Commons.

Problem der propagandistischen Bildbeschreibungen

Viele Bildbeschreibungen wurden aus der Originalquelle übernommen und enthalten beispielsweise Nazijargon (zum Beispiel Image:Bundesarchiv Bild 183-E10855, Polen, Juden zur Zwangsarbeit befohlen.jpg). Es gibt eine Bot-gestützte Lösung, um zu kennzeichnen, dass es sich dabei um historische Inhalte handelt. Bitte keine Änderungen an der jeweiligen Description vornehmen.

Bei sehr extremen Beschreibungstexten kann ein zusätzlicher Parameter in die BArch-description-Vorlage eingebaut werden:

|biased = (Art der POV, z.B. "NS-Propaganda")

Jeder hier eingesetzte Wert führt zusätzlich zu einer roten Hintergrundfarbe des Hinweistextes. Zusätzlich werden die Bilder in die Kategorie Images from the German Federal Archive with biased description eingetragen.

Georeferenzierung

Wenn möglich und sinnvoll können die Bilder georeferenziert werden. Relativ einfach geht das mit dem Tool GEOLOCATOR. Kurzanleitung:

• Mit ALT+Linksklick Kameraposition festlegen.
• Mit SHIFT+Linksklick Aufnahmerichtung festlegen.
• Jetzt in die Bildbeschreibung die ausgefüllte Vorlage LOCATION , z.B.: {{location|51|54|40.91|N|8|50|19.26|E|region:DE_heading:NE}}, kopieren.

Für folgendes Bild Image:Bundesarchiv Bild 118-30, Hermanns-Denkmal, Jungdeutsche Tagung.jpg ist das Ergebnis exemplarisch dargestellt. Es erscheint in der Bildbeschreibung folgende Infobox:

Camera location	51° 54′ 40.91″ N, 8° 50′ 19.26″ E	View all coordinates using: OpenStreetMap

Noch zu referenzierende Bilder könnten durch {{location possible}} gekennzeichnet werden.

Personen wiedererkennen

Wer sich bei der Identifizierung einer Person nicht sicher ist, kann sie bei Commons:Unidentified people of Germany eintragen.

Nach Fotografen kategorisieren

Bei vielen Bildern ist der Fotograf angegeben. Sie sollten entsprechend kategorisiert werden (category:Name des Fotografen). Diese Kategorien müssen ihrerseits als Unterkategorien von Category:Photographers from Germany (oder ihres Heimatlandes) eingeordnet werden.

Create the categories that are automatically assigned

• Batch categories just get added to Category:Images from the German Federal Archive Done
• Year categories get added to Category:Images from the German Federal Archive and the appropriate generic year category like Category:1986 Done
  • All year categories have been created and are automatically placed in the year category by the template
• Location categories should get added to Category:Images from the German Federal Archive and the appropriate generic location category like Category:Berlin, but that can't be found automatically in many cases.
  • Categories are created, topic categories can be added in the template.

Topic categories should be assigned

Some hints that can be used to assign topic categories:

• description text (perhaps in combination with time/location)
• people depicted (ideally, with a link to wikipedia)
• image use (eventually, if ever any)
• Bot working in a similar way as the bot doing {{Populate category}}: users order a bot to place all images from a certain category in another category
• Bot to convert location categories to topic categories. (Working on this. Multichill (talk) 20:07, 5 December 2008 (UTC))

Make it searchable

• Put Metadata into a DB on the toolserver
• Make a nice UI for searching, make it link to the Bundesarchiv and to Commons

Update Person Links

• Only ~30% of all people mentioned as depicted have been processed for links to wikipedia yet.
• When more mappings become available, update the description pages accordingly.

Problem of biased/propaganda descriptions

The image descriptions were taken from the original source; they i.e. contain Nazi jargon, There is a bot-supported solution to mark them as historic content. Please do not change the original description. Very extreme descriptions can be marked by an additional parameter in the BArch-description template:

|biased = (fill in type of bias, i.e. "Racism")

Any parameter value at this place will cause a red background color of the information text. Additionally, these images will be added to the category Images from the German Federal Archive with biased description.

Geotagging

It may be possible and useful to geotag the images. The GEOLOCATOR is my favourite tool to do so. Here is how it works:

• ALT+left-mouse-click in the map defines the camera position
• SHIFT+left-mouse-click defines the heading
• Now copy the LOCATION line, e.g.: {{location|51|54|40.91|N|8|50|19.26|E|region:DE_heading:NE}} to the image information.

Pictures with possible geolocation could be marked with {{location possible}}.

Not recognizing a person

If you are not sure about the identity of a person, please report the picture at Commons:Unidentified people of Germany.

Categories by photographer

Many files contain the names of the photographer. The pictures should be categorised accordingly (category:Name of photographer). These categories again must become subcategories of Category:Photographers from Germany (or their home country).

Images from the German Federal Archive needing categories

Many of the pictures in this category are already categorized. Can someone run a bot, which clears these pictures out of the list?

Who can check, if the 40.000 pictures are correctly categorized? And if you like to do this work, you can do this, because they are still in the other Bundesarchiv-categories. It is absolutely not necessary to keep them in the wrong category for this purpose. --Mbdortmund (talk) 09:31, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Well, if there are categories added directly to the image (not via a template), chances are good they are "real" categories. A bot that removes the "uncategorized" template from all pages that have a "direct" categorization will probably make few mistakes. And it would allow people to focus more on the images that still actually need categorization. -- Duesentrieb ⇌ 21:00, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

I often find pictures with only Person A categorized, but not Person B and not the photographer. Should the "uncategorized" really be removed? Isn't it more difficult to find them later for full categorization?--Ziko (talk) 21:08, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Yes, we have this problem, but that cannot be solved by going through 81.000 pictures twice or more. And if someone categorizes this way and uses hotcat the picture will get out of the category, too. There are ways to get better categories later

1. they are attributed to locations and will be analysed there.

2. authors will surch pictures for articles and will perhaps add categories, too.

We will have to do many jobs later. Some of us try to develop category-systems "on the fly" and we will have to analyse these structures later. Our first task is IMHO to get a first impression of the material and do our work as good as we can, but we cannot afford perfection. Many of the pictures which are left now are not so easy to categorize, but it is very slow, if you open hundreds of pictures which already got categories. --Mbdortmund (talk) 02:51, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
