Bot's tasks for which permission is being sought:

  1. On files listed in the Category:Pictures of volleyball players from Legavolley (2017), descriptions will be uniformed to a more consistent «[Name] [Surname], [italian] volleyball player» (+ italian) instead of only something in italian (italiano «Immagine del giocatore di Lega Pallavolo Serie A»). The personal player category is added to the file. (e.g. Special:Diff/263593147)
  2. If the personal volleyball category doesn't exist it will be created. It will be into the best national category available (e.g. in Category:Men's volleyball players from Australia) and, if possible, with the {{Wikidata person}}. (e.g. Special:Diff/263593150)

Discussion

I created a new template {{Wikidata person}} that adds a {{Creator}} template and interwiki links based on Wikidata. It also adds Category:People by name and birthyear/deathyear categories. Maybe something like that would be useful here. I also think it is a good idea to create category even for a single person if it is a notable person. Notability is a tricky business, but for people category if you can imagine that someone might upload more pictures of a person that is good enough for me. --Jarekt (talk) 01:08, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question Do you think that we should also add the DEFAULTSORT surname, name after that template? --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 10:09, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
yes, the Category:People by name and birthyear/deathyear categories will have proper sortkey, but it will be handy for other categories. --Jarekt (talk) 13:05, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I found existing {{Depicted person}}, may be we could just extend its functionality to use Wikidata? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:30, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That template is used in an individual file to list people depicted in the specific photograph. It has a different purpose. --Jarekt (talk) 20:33, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This is what this request is about as far as I could judge from test run. Of course, it may be widened. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 22:45, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You are right. I got confused. This is about file descriptions not category descriptions. I think it might be a good idea to add categories for a lot of those guys but that might be outside of the scope of this request. --Jarekt (talk) 00:19, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So, are these differences respecting your suggestions? file, cat --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 08:40, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The diffs look good. The infobox would look better if you add "Country of citizenship" and "occupation" properties to the wikidata item. But that is just a detail. --Jarekt (talk) 11:35, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Good point, that would be the next bot proposal in Wikidata. --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 12:33, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
TL;DR: We are ready :) Waiting for a kindly available bureaucrat. --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 13:05, 15 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In Wikidata or Commons? Depicted person: doesn't support Wikidata yet :-( --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:10, 15 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Commons :) I will work in Wikidata when I end here. --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 14:17, 15 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please make another test run, I'd say 50 or 100 edits. Thank you. --Krd 07:18, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OK ~100 tests done. --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 00:29, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good for me. Additional opinions? --Krd 08:29, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I still would like to see file automatic description generation based on Wikidata. --EugeneZelenko ([[User talk:|talk]]) 14:33, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@EugeneZelenko: Can you share an example about that? --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 16:31, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
See templates based on {{Creator}}. As I wrote, Depicted person: is proper templates for photos of people and it should be expanded to support Wikidata. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 17:15, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
What about something as the new {{Depicted Wikidata people}}? Requests for comments in its discussion page. --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 16:15, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think will be better to expand exiting template then create new one. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:12, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
OK, the code of the newer can work in the first. --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 21:53, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
E.g. we can apply this diff: test. --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 23:44, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@EugeneZelenko: So what about if you could specify Wikidata Q-code directly in {{Depicted person}} and seeing an automatic description from Wikidata if missing manually, and if there is only one subject in the picture? here a preview --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 00:39, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Seems fine for me, but please check template with several Wikidata items specified, since some photos may depict group of people. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:06, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It already works with multiple people (note that only with one person there will be an automatic description, in order to avoid confusion, or too text). I've added other examples. Do you have other comments? --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 20:23, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If there are no objections, I think bot status should be granted. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:24, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Approved. --Krd 15:05, 28 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
