Category talk:Writers from Czechia

This category is not good. The Czech Republic exists since 1993. Czech lands were for some time independent (the Middle Ages), then a part of Austria, then a part of Austria-Hungary, then a part of Czechoslovakia, then a part of Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, again Czechoslovakia, finally(?) the Czech Republic. Some writers (and artists at all) worked during several periods (for example writers Jaroslav Hašek, en:Bohumil Hrabal, painter Alfons Mucha). They could live in Prague only, but in several states (see above which states). So somewhen int the future I activate only category:Czech writers, and I empty this category as nonsensical one. --Ludek 18:37, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

This is a broader problem with categories related to Czechia. Most of other countries have their categories named by the country, Czechia by the state form (existing only since 1969, or 1993). Unfortunately, "Czech lands" had very variable scope during ages - Commons use the today's administrative divison for the basic categorization. I would prefer the timeless term "Czechia" but it is felt as problematic word by some people.

The second problem is whether the category should be defined by location of the writer (his adress or origin) or by his language. Franz Kafka wrote in Bohemia but only in German language. Comenius was of Moravian origin but he wrote most of his works in Latin. Many Czech emigrants wrote their Czech-language works (or also local-language works) outside Czechia. If we prefer the nationality (language), "Czech writers" would be the better name. If we prefer the location (country), Czech Republic or Czechia need to be understood as the area definition through the today's territory of the Czech Republic. --ŠJů (talk) 00:55, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
