Should this be moved to "Railway stations" like on English Wikipedia? / Fred Chess 08:41, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes
And three years of inaction is long enough, let's be bold and get it done. See also Category talk:Train stations in Germany about the same issue. -- KlausFoehl (talk) 13:12, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. should we engage the help of a robot to get all the changes done?
Use discussion per {{Cfd}}. --ŠJů (talk) 13:50, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Will consider, but first I shall look again at en:Talk:Train station before taking any further action. -- KlausFoehl (talk) 11:26, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If we're voting, I vote to stay with "Train stations" for neutrality but local cats should follow local custom. Of course, if we follow the French "Gare" or German "Bahnhof" or Japanese "Eki" we get terms that don't mention either trains or rails; just stations. Jim.henderson (talk) 04:34, 25 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
German "Bahnhof" is equivalent of English "Railway station" - Bahn = Railway. In the Czech Republic, the official term is "železniční stanice" (railway station), but e. g. mapy.seznam.cz uses "vlaková stanice" (train station). "Train station" is less official in Europe, but more compatible with "bus stop" or "tram stop".
The second problem is to decide which term is more universal. In some countries there are two types of "stations": the first are railway stations (Bahnhof, nádraží, stacja, dworzec...), the second is railway stops (Haltestelle, Haltepunkt, zastávka, haltă, przystanek...). We need a term which includes both types. --ŠJů (talk) 05:53, 25 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In my place of residence for long years station is mostly used like in "when do we have to take you to the station to be in good time for your train", and that was in Britain. I was just reminded of this usage last weekend. And I'd say that "how can I get to the station" would certainly be understood to be railway-related. I'll also comment on en:Talk:Train station. -- KlausFoehl (talk) 13:46, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And then when we want to make sure it's not a fire or police station, for non-English-speaking countries there's the question of translation into British or American. Does the "Bahn" in "Bahnhof" translate correctly into "railroad", or "railway"? It depends on whom the translation is directed at; German speakers are more often addressing their EU neighbours but Wikipedia has no reason to choose one over the other. So, yes, the status quo name of "Rail stations", poor as it is, looks most neutral, thus least bad for our purposes. Jim.henderson (talk) 06:37, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean Train stations, not Rail stations? --ŠJů (talk) 07:26, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oops! Yes, either would be neutral and suitable, the reason to prefer one of these over the other is that one is already done. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:09, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I do not mind whether the categories will be called "railway stations ..." or "railroad stations ...", as both "railway" and "railroad" have historically been used on both sides of the Atlantic. In a particular geographical context, go for the name that is locally used. For the main category, just throw a coin if you cannot decide. But "train station" is just a slang expression that IMHO should not be used in an encyclopedic context. --Schlosser67 (talk) 07:44, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Railway stations instead of train station at least for Europe?[edit]

While it has been declined to generalize the term "railway station" it was accepted that there are no train stations in the UK and Ireland. Many subcategories and descriptions contain the term Railway station also for other European countries. Shortly said, it's a mess. I propose that British English is used for European railways and American English for the A-continents. -- Gürbetaler (talk) 19:41, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
