Hi, just a question: Is there no 'bot' to tag/categorize uploaded photographs by date/day, p.e. by using exif-data ? Kindli regard, Roland zh (talk) 21:28, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: note that exif dates are not always reliable; also that sometimes more than one date is included in the data, & that exif data (when it exists at all) does not always follow the same format... there doesn't seem to be a way to make it fully-automatic (i.e.; bot-sorting would need human-review); although partial automation might speed things up & increase the "population" of the daily categories. the place for "date" in commons' upload form is also ambiguous/used-ambiguously, AND mediawiki's search/sort functions are rather limited; this was why i started making categories with the formula "photographs taken on xxxx-xx-xx" in the first place. Mhm, a good question! As it seems to me, there is none. But not all images, taken at one certain day, are typical for this day: Cars, stones, ships, buildings, monuments without the surrounding place or nature, normally look nearly one and the same for a long time. And many of the fresh uploaded files are nominated for deletion: A 'bot' would increase the problem of spams or "selfies". And: many photos do not have EXIF-informations, but the description, the title or a link tells us the day. So it may be better in future, to tag it manually like now, not with a bot! (but more people should help to categorize) If there are enough photos for a month, we can create a page like March 2014, April 2014, May 2014 and so on. Or even for days, like 2014-04-12, 2014-04–13 (where are "enough" photos taken in that overloaded categories), or days with public attention: Holy Saturday, Easter sunday and monday (Cat with pope), 1 May (Workers' Day), important decisions in politics/parliament, polls, catastrophes, demonstrations, relevant festivals, conferences. So I found your photos of "Sechseläutenplatz-'fäscht'" and some more, and added them to Category:Photographs taken on 2014-04-26.
Possible perspective
My questions:
  • Is there a Commons-project or portal "Media by Time"? Or is here the place to talk about, how to organize the "Commons time categories" and link them to the Main page for Users and visitors? Or where is the talk-page? We should avoid a low structured Category here, like the parallel Category:Days by day: Subcategories or templates are necessary, to navigate through months, years and centuries (there are very old photos in Commons!). If it works, we can link the access from Main page #Content: "By time" to a central page, with direct links to 2014, April 2014, the countries in Category:April 2014 by country, the cities in Category:April 2014 by city, the day before and the day before yesterday. (today, from the gallery April 26 there is no direct link to Category:2014-04-26). A little step for a photographer: Add your good photos, that you will take tomorrow, to April 27 and include a link: " ....event... (27 April 2014)"! April 25 normally is visited of less than 24 viewers, yesterday you have had the chance to present your photos a little bit more Commons-visitors.
  • And what about the back-links from the global Wikipedia's to April 2014? Shall we discuss it in the sister-projects, or add a Commonscat or direct link to the "Up-to-date-Month-gallery-page" (April 2014), to activate our WP-readers to add new photos to Category:May 2014)? --LudwigSebastianMicheler (talk) 00:57, 27 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
CommentHi, btw, so you'll still interested in, please also check such imho 'handmade' and imho incohorrent categories as p.e. Category:9th December 2011 in Switzerland, please see also User talk:Abderitestatos started as of February 2013 by User:Docu, kindly regards, Roland zh (talk) 20:06, 24 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Interested to contribute to a "time archive", yes I am! Nearly every day I start a new day-category (help, if you want!), and it is very good, to organize photos in subcategories: If you look to Category:2014-05-25 (European Parliament election, 2014‎, many files!), only single maps, videos or one typical photo for a huge and important subcategory should be in this "day-category"! (okay in 2014-05-10, subcategories would be nice to have, for the dominant Viktor-Orbán-photos besides the single video of US-First-Lady Obama – nothing is perfect ...). Overview about files in subcategories: It is possible in month-Category:May 2014 (for new users: click "►" not the link to the category!). The "National subcategories" you told, like 9th December 2011 in Switzerland, are not really necessary in a global project: events, locations, villages, (National-)parks, people are better to name and tag with a subcategory, if there are more than 10 photos for a day. But they are no problem for me, if someone want to have that Cat(')s (complicated discussion you have linked).
Additional to day-categories: If you have visited gallery Mai 2014, the linked daily categories in Photographs by date are a possibility to find connected photos of one event, a global overview for a typical day in northern spring (Kirschblüte müsst' ich suchen → nette April-Gänseblümchen-Seite), or to link to a real 3-day-photo-report like the (bicycle-)Paris-Arras Tour 2014 (impressive! but too much files to upload hundreds of photos – ask for subpages of that huge gallery?). So, day-galleries maybe a Commons-field in future for historians in combination with linked Wikipedia-articles, where too many photos are not welcome ("überbilderte"/overpictured? Kleinstadt ←–→ big "money-machines"). Should we start the missing-link-page "Media by Time"? --LudwigSebastianMicheler (talk) 22:39, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
i support "Media by Time" as page and/or category-structure. when i originated the "photographs taken on" cats, it did not seem like we had much material, other than photographs, being uploaded in (very) large quantities; hence i did not worry about making parallel categories for other types of media files (audio, video, graphis, text,etc....?) right away. but if somebody want to organize this, please go ahead! :) Lx 121 (talk) 08:59, 15 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Today we have 3,576 subcategories (= days with photographs) in our "Photographs-by-date-archive", wow! --LudwigSebastianMicheler (talk) 10:01, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

...more than 1 year later, on 2015-11-27 we have 7,761 subcategories in total. Meanwhile I have started the page Commons:Media by time, please help to improve it! (Info and Discussion: Talk:Main Page#Make a link to Commons:Media by Time?( ▶ By time ). I hope. --LudwigSebastianMicheler (talk) 17:21, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hidden categories[edit]

Please, can you make hidden categories from all these categories, as is done for photograph source categories? --Havang(nl) (talk) 12:39, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, now this is the first category. The first category should be the most important. This is not.--Htm (talk) 19:23, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Contains generative photography, please move them[edit]

Please make sure AI-generated images are not contained in subcategories here. See Category:AI-generated images by Magdalena Roeseler – those don't seem to be actual photographs but Category:Generative photography (generated images that look like photographs). Not sure whether anyone is watching this page, but I opened an RfC which could directly affect the content of this category. Ymblanter (talk) 10:18, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
