This page is a great idea, thanks User:Yug !Metoc 19:16, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What about artists? If I wanted someone to draw a picture, where can I find them? Do we need a new category? What about music performers? Richard001 02:12, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Support I think your proposal is quite good, but it should be even wider. Let me explain:

Q:Which are the main categories of multimedia content you see when visiting the Common's Main Page? A:Images, sounds and videos. Why? Because that's the simplest way to categorize all the multimedia content here. They are the superset which any other category could be make from. It looks like the approach of these templates is going from the narrow to the wide (i.e. audio edition was included). So I suggest adding sub-categories and templates according to this scheme. For instace, painting skills (both traditional and digital), bitmap graphics and vector graphics would become part of the imagery abilities. Musical production, composition, arranging, interpretation and digital audio editing could go as a more general audio-skills category. And the same goes for video, which could include stuff such as animation, film-making, recording, etc... By the way, why are we writing above the index and all the other topics? --Isacdaavid (talk) 03:43, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Might I suggest a Bitmap Graphics Creator Bottom Feeder option to rank oneself with? Something like a user BF-n?

BF-0 This user is able to create at a interested level on Bitmap graphics bottom feeders (PNG,...) 0 Graphics abilities

BF-1 This user is able to create at a beginner level on Bitmap graphics bottom feeders (PNG,...) 1 Graphics abilities

BF-2 This user is able to create at a intermediate level on Bitmap graphics bottom feeders (PNG,...) 2 Graphics abilities

BF-3 This user is able to create at a master level on Bitmap graphics bottom feeders (PNG,...) 2 Graphics abilities

For an "{User Encyclopedic}" template[edit]

Hello, I think it may be great to also make such template, for especially encyclopedic pics such those upload by Badagnani, Fir0002, Sting, LadyofHats. 03:08, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Using a scanner[edit]

Using a scanner is a graphic ability — like photography, but different enough to be considered separately. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 12:49, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

update tag[edit]

Resolved

Why is it not possible to put bg-X into the babel template? There is a overlapping of the language bg (Bulgarian?) - shouldn't so the babel changed/ the codeword for the bitmap editing possibilities. Regards, mabdul 12:50, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

{{User bg-1}}. All language babels have lower case letters. --Martin H. (talk) 20:23, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
But with big letters it is also not working... mabdul 21:09, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Then this is a problem of the mw:Extension:Babel that you try to use on your userpage. Its not a problem of this page or the templates. Simply use {{Babel|...}} insted of #Babel: --Martin H. (talk) 00:08, 20 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Thanks. Yes, it is a problem of the extension. Crazy. mabdul 11:49, 20 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Bugreport filled ;) bugzilla:34680. mabdul 09:22, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
issue remains as of today: if embedded in a babel template, the BG tag is interpreted as Bulgarian language ability if using the "#babel:" notation instead of "babel|". Icefield (talk) 00:47, 1 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Inaccurate Naming[edit]

Should "Multimedia Abilities" or something similar not be a better name for the category instead of "Graphics abilities" , given that the aim of this category is " ...to categorize users' function of their graphical and audio abilities..." ??? --Isacdaavid (talk) 01:49, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Or how about just 'media'? Since monomedia editors (such as those purists only willing to touch SVGs, for instance ;) would then be included. Also, this is the way Commons and Wikimedia generally have been moving (note that the file: namespace used to be image:). But yes, most things that can be represented digitally count as media, including the new COM:3D file capability! Arlo James Barnes 04:15, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks....[edit]

Just came across this page. I downloaded jpg's that Carroll Jones III sent to me. I have been in correspondence with him for over 4 years. I was amazed he agreed to put some of his work on Wikimedia. He is a brilliant and very kind man. I am honored you saw in him what I see in him!jrbwalk (talk) 03:02, 20 August 2016 (UTC)jrbwalk[reply]

User tag BG-4 does not work?[edit]

BG-4 is not recognized as a user tag (although BG-3 is). Icefield (talk) 00:47, 1 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Video abilities categories[edit]

I would like to have “video abilities” categories. I think it would need two categories, one for changing video files, similar to the Category:Audio file editors and one for making videos, more like the Category:Commons photographers category. What do you think about this? --GPSLeo (talk) 14:21, 19 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Minor change[edit]

Hi @Stang! Thank you for the marking page for translation! I made a minor change to the Category's tables to unsqueeze the columns. Would you mind to check it that I didn't break something. Thanks a lot! — Pacha Tchernof (talk) 10:07, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Pacha Tchernof: Looks good to me. Stang 12:29, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Stang, I have to tell that it wasn't the good idea to ask marking the page for translation. I noticed that when the category is translated, the new page with /ru in the address is created, and at the translated page, there is no one category from the initial page. I'm so sorry! How could I fix it? I imagine a way of creation a template with translatable content that could be putted into the Category. Does this sound ok? — Pacha Tchernof (talk) 20:10, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Pacha Tchernof: at first I marked the category page for translation by referring to POTY's (2019/2020) category pages, but, you are right, this cause no page inside the subpage (like /ru). I replaced those text with a template has the same name, and feel free to complete your translation at Template:Graphics_abilities/i18n. Stang 20:48, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Stang, thank you so much! It’s awesome! I’m going right now to complete the translation. — Pacha Tchernof (talk) 06:52, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What about users who create (many) charts?[edit]

Could you please add a row in the "Graphics abilities" table for these and how should that be implemented? I think a good example is User:RCraig09 who uploads many high-quality much-used charts on important subjects.

It would be good if more users did similar things and if it was better possible to find them via this page, such as for seeing how they create the charts to replicate that. Prototyperspective (talk) 11:06, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate the interest, but I want people to use the tools I created (see User:RCraig09/Excel to XML for SVG), rather than having them sent to me, personally. But, for what it's worth, I've just added my user page to Category:Wikipedians who convert raster images to scalable vector graphics, though that's not an exact fit. I don't think a category based on who creates "many" charts is easy to define. RCraig09 (talk) 15:47, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what I meant with such as for seeing how they create the charts – people could use this to find the XML2SVG page and see how its charts look like. It may also be good to add this more directly, so I think it could/should be added to Commons:Software (also see here) where I'm thinking of also adding a mention of for charts. This is partly because of the visibility of this page and also to more encourage people to produce more charts (which imo are needed here far more than photographs at this point).
It would be nice if more people could comment and/or contribute because I think I currently don't know of any editor who creates many charts other than RCraig09 and User:Wikideas1 so that's not (yet) a good starting point for a new category.
It's surely not easy to define but it works just the same way the other categories on the page work...they are not necessarily complete, just don't add users who merely created two charts (anything else could be debatable and/or criteria be defined in the cat description). That would be just one small step toward encouraging more user-created charts and is currently missing on the page where only other graphics abilities are featured. The main use next to encouragement I guess would be to share knowledge (teach/learn) with other Wikicommons users and editors. Prototyperspective (talk) 10:39, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
