English: Veranda

Characteristically a veranda is a roofed and otherwise only partially enclosed exterior extension of the ground floor of a building. A balcony, in contrast, is a platform typically above the ground floor. In Queensland, especially on the style of building known as a Queenslander, this distinction is confused, because the "ground" floor is a platform elevated on posts to well above ground level.
