Central Field (Iwo Jima), also known at Motoyama Airfield No. 2 and Airfield No. 2, is a World War II airfield on Iwo Jima. It was headquarters for VII Fighter Command of the Twentieth Air Force (March 1 – December 1, 1945) and the intelligence-gathering 41st Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron (August though mid-September 1945). Central Field remained in U.S. hands until being turned over to the Japanese Government on June 27, 1968. It then became Iwo Jima Air Base, a navigation and weather station of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. It is still used by the U.S. military as an aircraft refueling depot and as a U.S. Navy special pilot training facility.
