Pay attention to copyright
File:מיכל טמיר.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Thanks for uploading File:Michal Tamir.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

Dear Túrelio, I had the creator of the image send confirmation of copyrights in accordance with the relevant instructions. Could you let me know if this has been resolved and the picture can now remain stabley? Thank you! YR on wiki (talk) 14:11, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yours sincerely, Belbury (talk) 14:24, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Belbury, thank you for the alert. The picture I used is in the public domain, it is on the university webpage and its subject (Adam Shinar) may use it freely - as is the practice with faculty member photos. Could you please help in clarifying this? This is also true for the media relating to Shelly Kreitzer, Gila Stopler, Yael Ronen (who is me!!!) and Pamela Ukeles. Many thanks!--YR on wiki (talk) 14:35, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying! Do you mean that the university web page says that the image is explicitly "public domain", or is there just an informal agreement that the subject of a staff photo can use their own portrait freely on other websites? Commons is very careful about licencing things correctly, so we'd have to make sure that whatever terms the university releases these images under meets Commons:Licensing#Acceptable licenses.
By putting the images on Commons under a CC-Attribution licence you're saying that anyone in the world can use the photos for any purpose, with no royalties or permission required, which may not be what the university wants. Belbury (talk) 15:29, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is no formal statement, but it is indeed the practice that the photo can be used by anyone for any purpose. Is this statement sufficient? YR on wiki (talk) 17:27, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Commons:Licensing#Acceptable licenses says that broad permissions phrased as "the material may be used freely by anyone" aren't sufficient for Commons: the copyright holder must be explicit about redistribution, derivative works, commercial reuse and the permission being irrevocable.
Is there a page anywhere on the university website where they say something specific about the copyright status of such images? Belbury (talk) 19:04, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough :). I don't know of any page on the university website to this effect. So if I have a set of pictures taken by a professional photographer (in my case I can even give credit), they are on my computer for my use. They were taken precisely for this purpose, both the photographer and the university allow me to make free use. There is no formal document in my possession to state this, this is probably somewhere in his contract with the university. What do I need to do so I may use these photos? Even if it's not a university matter, how do I show that someone who has taken my picture allows me to use the photograph? Presumably this would apply even if the person is a personal friend. I'm at a loss here. Any help would be highly appreciated. YR on wiki (talk) 07:17, 20 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest I'm actually not sure where Commons draws the line between the work of a friend taking a photo for you (who would expect no control over your use of the image) and of a professional photographer (who might).
But Commons:Volunteer Response Team is the standard route for confirming permission, just an email from the photographer or copyright holder. Belbury (talk) 07:53, 20 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll try to sort this out for myself and for my colleagues. In the meantime could I ask you to still not remove the pictures? Thanks! YR on wiki (talk) 08:14, 20 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The act of submitting permission should put the deletion on hold until that permission can be checked; you'll have seven days to do that. If it takes longer for you to submit the permission, the images can always be restored afterwards. Belbury (talk) 14:17, 20 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Margit Cohn.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Dear Yann,
I'm sorry I only noticed this message now, for some reason my watchlist is not operating properly.
I uploaded 2 photos of Margit Cohn's, she herself confirmed via the link that they are her work (selfie) and she allowed their use. She received confirmation for both. Nonetheless, the picture in the entry was removed. Could you please see what happened to the confirmation? I see no point in uploading and going through the process again if for whatever reason it does not register properly. Thank you! YR on wiki (talk) 11:40, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, There was no license. Please ask Margit Cohn to send a permission for a free license via COM:VRT. Thanks, Yann (talk) 12:31, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
