Scandic St. Olavs plass / Edderkoppen
Hi, I see you've added a category for Edderkoppen. I believe this is a theater within the Scandic St. Olavs plass category. Should we merge these categories, or maybe add Edderkoppen to the Scandic St. Olavs plass-category? Your thoughts? Toresetre (talk) 21:46, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
- I'm not sure. I think keeping these categories apart is the best solution for now? Perhaps we could add for instance "see also category:Edderkoppen" etc.? Wolfmann (talk) 01:53, 29 June 2017 (UTC)
categories of architectural elements
Hello Wolfmann, thank you for showing interest in architectural details and categorizing images in this matter. If you do so like here for example could you possibly pick more specific categories? The main category Category:Stairs actually holds over 450 images. If you add images there, sooner or later all of them have to be looked again and sorted into subcategories by someone else. Categorizing in this way is quite inefficient and very time consuming. Imagine: Would you like to do the work sorting allmost 500 images? In this chase if you had added Category:Outside stairs in West Virginia and Category:Wooden stairs instead of the general Category:Stairs you would have been a lot more efficient.
If I did the categorization of this image I would went even beyond that. I would also create a subcategory of "wooden stairs" (holds also 400 images) Category:Wooden stairs in the United States based on the similiar ones (of other countries) and listed in Category:Wooden stairs by country. It doesn't matter to have such a category with just one file in it, because it will eventually fill up with other ones.
I don't now the reason for your edit which I have mentioned and I also not know how you categorize normally. I just wanted to make sure that you are aware of this. Thank you. --Zaccarias (talk) 02:59, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
- Dear Zaccarias! Thank you for reminding me! As a procrastinating Illustrator loving pictures and avoiding work, I spend a lot of time finding and creating correct and more specific categories for images on Wikimedia Commons (as you can see from my contributions). Nevertheless, now and then I make it easy for myself by just adding a very broad category to an image. When I'm in a hurry or getting exhausted, I consider it to be better to add a top or parent category than no category at all. By giving images keywords we make them searchable, and many of the superb photos and illustrations copied from the big archives are unfortunately very poorly marked.
- Ok. I will try my best to put images into correct subcategories (but perhaps allowing myself to make some easy solutions from time to time).
- Once again thank you for keeping a sharp eye on contributors! All the best from me – and keep up the good work! --Wolfmann (talk) 07:47, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
- Dear Wolfmann, if you sometimes take the easy way I am fine with that. I thought that you might allready be aware. As you said adding a general category is also an improvement. Thank you for your very welcoming reply, I am also very pleased to see other users taking media categorization seriously. Like you said there is a lot of potential here to improve the usability of the allready obtained content. At the moment that is basically the issue I am focussing on. My skills are improving: I am shifting more and more from one by one categorization, to mass categorization. Right now I am learning search expressions helping me to automate some categorization work. I also wish you all the best! --Zaccarias (talk) 19:30, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Norsk Tipping Multix Joker Poker spilleautomat, Ågotnes Bensin og Storkiosk, Sotra 2017-10-31 g.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Please don't overwrite other people's images without consulting them
See Commons:Overwriting existing files, which is an official guideline. As it happens, your crops of File:FLMM - Nazi political and civil organizations insignia 35-40.jpg are improvements, and I'm fine with them, but this is not what you should have done. You should either have created your own version under a distinct file name, or you should have consulted with me first. - Jmabel ! talk 06:18, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
- Oh! I am so sorry! I hoped that giving the copyright free files new names (by adding "cropped") the slightly confusing file system on Wikimedia Commons somehow should have kept both versions available. (This is the third time in some years I upload new versions of existing images.) But now I have learned and know better. So thank you for the reminder and the advice. I will do this differently the next time. OK? All the best from me. Wolfmann (talk) 06:50, 10 October 2019 (UTC)

- Hi! Unfortunately, the illustrator's name is not mentioned in the book and apparently unknown to those (professional militaria stores etc.) presenting/selling this book on the Internet. The 1943 version of the ORGANISATIONSBUCH DER NSDAP was the 7th edition of the official Nazi Party guide published by Reichsorganisationsleiter dr. Robert Ley and the Zentralverlag der NSDAP in Munich. It was never for public sale. The organization (as well as its leader) ceased to exist in 1945, 75 years ago. The files on wikimedia are taken from this copy found at archive.org. scanned by The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM). The digital copy is marked with: The USHMM is unaware of any copyright restrictions for this item. The uniform plates by this illustrator was also published in the 1940 edition of the book. Earlier editions, for example the 1936 or the 1937 editions, show other illustrations. As unsigned contributions to an official handbook almost 80 years old, I considered the illustrations to have fallen into the public domain, and didn't see them as "genuie" orginal work of art by a named artist with copyright restrictions. But I am by no means an expert in this field, and the legal restrictions vary among countries. So what are we going to do to keep the image files in the wikimedia commons database? Find the correct tag? All the best from me :-) Wolfmann (talk) 15:32, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
