Questions about copyright
The Emirr, do you work for IUCN? Unless you created the images, you cannot claim copyright ownership, yet you have doctored the copyright notices to add your name. I see you've done this with many (if not all) of the images you have downloaded from IUCN at Commons. Unless I'm mistaken, IUCN retains copyright on those images.
Here is the copyright notice from IUCN:
- 2. Copyrights and ownership
The IUCN Red List contains copyrighted material and/or other proprietary information and thus, IUCN Red List Data are protected by intellectual property agreements and copyright laws and regulations worldwide. IUCN and/or their collaborators are the sole and exclusive owners of all rights, titles and interests, including trademarks, copyrights, trade names, trade secrets and other intellectual property rights, contained in the data and software of The IUCN Red List.
You agree to not alter or remove any copyright symbol or other identification concerning authorship of any of the materials contained on or otherwise made available to you in The IUCN Red List. Source: IUCN
You have violated the last paragraph and that's a serious thing. You risk getting banned from Wikipedia for such a serious offense, so I suggest you immediately fix this matter on every single image. We have permission to use their images, but not to "alter or remove" the copyright notice. If you will replace the images at Commons with the original images (unaltered) and the original copyright notices (unaltered), that might be enough to save your skin. -- BullRangifer (talk) 17:39, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
- 3rd party comment: Could you be a little more specific? I see no evidence of copyright violations. Either I can't find them, or then IUCN really does not make available any such SVG maps like The Emirr has uploaded here. Note that the IUCN does not own the range information. For example, any Wikipedia/Commons user is allowed to take one of our Blank SVG maps of the world as basis, and retrace an approximation of the IUCN range from their web site using a tool such as InkScape or Adobe Illustrator. Such is not a copyright violation, as the range information is by its very nature not copyrightable (information is not copyrightable, while an artistic or technical rendition of that information usually is.)
- It would be a different case if you were able to provide evidence of actually verbatim copying of materials owned by the IUCN. However, I could not find any such materials by comparing some of the range images uploaded by The Emirr to the materials on the IUCN website.
- A further clarification on your part is needed. Meanwhile, please bear in mind our core policy of Assuming Good Faith. You can familiarize yourself with the work by The Emirr on their Commons user page. The Emirr is a valued and productive long-time contributor, and allegations of copyright violations are a serious matter. However, I am not at all convinced by any of the evidence you have presented so far. --Hydrox (talk) 19:58, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- I have mentioned this matter to The Emirr before the comment above, but have not received any real clarification. All I got was edit warring and then some comments on my Wikipedia user talk page. I think you need to read this section before continuing:
- Without getting any real response to my questions (do you see any response above in this section at Commons?), it's hard for me to know what's happening. AGF is good, but the one being questioned is expected to respond. Without a response we have to move toward DR (I was told to do that when I nominated the image for deletion). Before that I want a response from The Emirr. Dispute resolution is a disruptive and time-consuming process which can be avoided when the involved editors just talk together. That's what I'd rather do.
- My concern here is that it appears to me that The Emirr is violating the last paragraph written by IUCN (see above) by altering their copyright notice. Am I mistaken? It isn't necessary for The Emirr to alter the IUCN copyright notice. Their images can be used by us for free! The Emirr claims the images are from IUCN (and they are, since they are identical, including a copyright notice that's obviously from the IUCN), and thus there is no need to alter the copyright notice, and in fact it MUST NOT be altered. Why is The Emirr taking credit for them? Is The Emirr the actual creator of the original image at IUCN? (The Emirr has claimed to be the creator of the image(s).) Does The Emirr work for IUCN? I have asked some of these questions but have not received a response. Plagiarism is also a possible issue. Are my questions fair?
- I'm completely willing to totally change my approach to this situation if The Emirr provides good explanations. I think you should urge The Emirr to respond to each of my questions, rather than questioning my motives. I'm seeking to protect Wikipedia and Wikimedia from possible copyright problems. We do have those problems all the time, and maybe that's what we're dealing with here. I don't know for sure, so I'm asking. Is that fair enough? -- BullRangifer (talk) 02:29, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
- Again, I see no evidence of copyright violations. My hypothesis is that The Emirr has made the maps presented here by using a public domain blank SVG atlas map as a basis, and then adding range information using Adobe Illustrator, a vector image processing software. Technical analysis of the uploaded file supports my view. He has then uploaded the image to Commons, licensing it under CC Attribution 3.0 (which he is allowed to do as the rightful holder of the copyright.) Such method does not violate the IUCN's copyright, and he and Wikimedia Commons would be not bound by the IUCN's Terms of Use license you cited in your original post. --Hydrox (talk) 18:59, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
- I just did some more investigation and I discovered an error I made. I thought the copyright notice was originally from IUCN, but it's not. It uses the name of Cypron, a company which makes computer games, but is probably unrelated to them. I'm guessing it's his own copyright notice, so he's apparently on safe ground. Therefore I'm going to drop this whole thing and apologize to him for my error. Otherwise, I still stand by my position (and the position of others), that the original map we've been using at the reindeer article is better than this one. To prevent anyone from thinking he's a copyright violator, I've changed the heading for this thread. -- BullRangifer (talk) 02:59, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

South Sudan
Hi, your maps are great, but could you please include the boundary between Sudan and South Sudan? Thanks! —Angr 00:21, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
- Basically I mean all of your maps where Sudan can be seen. I know you've made hundreds of maps and it would be a lot of work to go back and fix them all, but at least for maps you make in the future it would be good to keep the boundary between Sudan and South Sudan in mind. Thanks! —Angr 16:14, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

File:TE-Collage Tel Aviv.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

File:Greater London Authority logo.svg requires updating
Hi The Emirr,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:Greater London Authority logo.svg is out of date. Could you update it? Thanks again. Further notes: there is no official colour scheme so you should be able to improve it by making it monochrome and remove the colour background. --Marianian(talk) 17:19, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
Omura's whale range map
Hi. The Omura's whale page needs a range map. You don't appear to have been on here for awhile though, so I don't expect a reply. If by the off chance you do edit here again, I know the coordinates or at least the provinces/prefectures/counties various specimens have been found in Southeast Asia and elsewhere, so if you need that info just post here or my wikipedia talk page.
--Cobija (talk) 12:06, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
