Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

 Support I prefer this image to File:Lanzarote 6 Luc Viatour.jpg as this gives full view from bottom to top and the clear reflections as well. The English WP article says that the cave is called "Cueva de los Verdes" i.e. "Cave of Greens" because it was occupied by the "Verdes" family. Although Verde in Spanish means the colour green, i don't think the caves are called so from the colour's name. Of course, i am completely stranger to the caves and the Spanish language. But both the image seem to be using artificial lights, yellow and green, for the effects. Although other majority of the images in this category show yellowish-redish stones, the only one with natural green colour is File:Cueva de los Verdes - Lanzarote - CV09.jpg. If the caves are really called after the colour and not surname, we have no quality image that gives natural green colour. I confirm that the cave is named from green mineral that composes it, is enough rare. But in this case the color is very bright, without the need for projector with green filter. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 06:57, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

 Support I visited the cave two times. Both times the guide said, that "verde" has nothing to to do with the colour, but is named after the family Verde. In the guide book of Polyglott is said: "Die Familie Verde, nach der sie benannt ist, nutzte sie als Ziegenstall" and the guide book of Dumont: "Die Farbe Grün, nach der die Kaverne benannt zu sein scheint, bezieht sich tatsächlich auf den Familiennamen Verde. Die Verdes hatten die Höhlen im 17. Jahrhundert wiederentdeckt und dort samt ihrer Herde Zuflucht während zahlreicher Piratenüberfällen gefunden. Mit Proviant versorgt, bot sich hier ein praktisches Versteck für Tage oder Wochen." The guide book of Baedecker mentions as colours "white, red, yellow and black", not green! Please have also a look on the name itself: "Cueva de los Verdes", not "Cueva verde". The green colour you see here in the background is green artificial light, not the colour of the cave. The other picture mentioned shows not minerals but green algae at the entrace of the cave, where we have sunlight.
Perhaps one should create a subscope "lake", for the cave has many other interesting parts, e.g. the hall (Auditorium) where there are concerts and already Yehudi Menuhin had played, the galleries and so on. --Llez (talk) 07:33, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
