Please help replace this outdated license

[edit]

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

dégradés

[edit]

Merci pour vos belles cartes - J'ai extrait les dégradés d'eux et les a ajoutés à cpt-city. Ils sont très populaires !

Jim Green

Hello Jim.
I'm happy to know your interest for our Wikipedia elevation gradients and the success they have and I'm glad to see one of my maps on your interesting site.
For the “little history”, I created in collaboration with other “Wikicartographers” on WP-fr the first version of the gradient a few years ago when I started to draw physical maps using DEM data. Along the years I made several improvements to the template until the current stable 2.0 version. This template, used in all new physical maps created on WP-fr and also by several other map-creators in other languages, allows us to harmonize our maps and have a specific style on Wikipedia with colors specifically chosen for a display on monitor which permit good separation of the levels on topographic maps.

Sirs,

I would like to include in a Word document I have entitled "Developing an Uncommon Common Sense," which I am to use as the "text" for my Introduction to Philosophy students at Forman Christian College and University in Lahore, Pakistan, Eric Gaba's photograph of the bust of Socrates that you have included in your article of him. The photo is the following and I have included just below it all the credits that you have requested.

Thank you very much, Myron M. Miller mmmiller@tampabay.rr.com

Hi Eric, great map. I'm using it as a background on a page size display of Scotland with photos (for an open house at the Penn State University Maps Library). Just wondering what software you used to create the map....Thanks, Valerie (vmseb)

Hello,

I'm the author of GEMï and for version 2, which will be released shortly, I would like to use Isle_of_Man_topographic_map-en.svg. GEMï (LGPL. From v2 on -> Open Project) is a web operating system that loads svg works in wrapper windows and it would be nice to include that map as it is nice and with a relatively small filesize. When I tested the file it wasn't working well with all the svg implementations because of some style inconsistencies which I took the liberty to fix. Please, tell me if that's ok with you.

I would also like to know if I can use it with the demos of an svg library that I wrote for a company and that will also be released shortly. This other work is commercial.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Florida location map

[edit]

Hello Sting! I noticed that you created an excellent location map for the state of Florida. I was wondering if you would consider 2 changes to make this map consistent with all of the other US state location maps:

 1. Remove the scale
 2. Change the licensing from cc-by-sa to cc-by (which makes it a bit easier to reuse)

List of oil spills

[edit]

Hi is it possible to give latitude and longitude location details for all oil spills.

Hello. Unfortunately I will probably not add this information because many times this data is not given by the sources or very imprecise (approximate distance from the shore with a general bearing). If you are looking for this kind of data I invite you to follow the links given in the column < Liens > in the article page on Wikipedia in French which are reliable sources and are the most precise I have found. Map Question

[edit]

Hey there Sting. I really like your map of the Pyrenees. I was wondering how exactly you embedded the raster for the relief. I am currently making a map in Illustrator CS3, and am having difficulty placing a raster. So far the only thing that works is a GIF, but the results aren't as nice as I'd like. Anyway, tips or tricks of the trade would be greatly appreciated! Thank you and keep up the good work. --98.211.226.41 00:27, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and thanks for your support!
What I do is to take the GIS data of the area and display in the GIS software only the shadows with a lightning from the NW, without elevation information (all elevations are white). This gives me an image of the shadows in gray scale. I export it as PNG image with the same resolution than the one I used when exporting the elevation data. I open then this image in The Gimp and select Colors => Color to Alpha to specify a color as transparent. I start first with a gray one corresponding to the flat areas. When this is done, I repeat the operation but with the white. This will make that I will only keep the shadows of this image, the other parts beeing transparent: the clear gray of the flat areas as well as the white (illuminated side of the relief) would wash out the colors of the elevation data in the final image. I lower the general transparency of this layer to 25-35% (Inkscape doesn't handle it for raster images) so it improves the first-sight understanding of the relief without making difficult the reading of additional data. I save this image as a PNG, keeping the transparency of the areas where I deleted the colors.
After that and when I'm finished with the elevation in Inkscape, I import the image in that software and simply embed it: the file weight becomes heavier but this will assure that this raster image inside the SVG file will be displayed without error or bug in Wikipedia.
I don't know about Illustrator.
Hope this helps. Greetings. Sting (talk) 00:56, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request for permission to use English language political map of Africa

[edit]

Dear Sting,

I work for an environmental charity, we have finished producing a report on deforestation in Africa and I am very in using the English language derivative of your political map of Africa in our report, authored by user Bobarino (here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:African_continent-en.svg). The report would be made available for free online.

I am also interested in perhaps altering the image to highlight the specific countries of interest to our report (by tinting their territories in grey, for example).

Would you be happy for me to use in this way and under the Creative Commons license, and if so do I attribute the image to you or the author of the derivative Bobarino?

Many thanks,

Jonathan

I'm a little disturbed by one thing on your otherwise excellent French-language map of Scotland (and a lot of the other versions actually). The problem is why are only some of the place names in French, whilst others are in English. An example is The Pennines? Hi Sting. I saw that you uploaded Seagate ST33232A hard disk head and platters detail.jpg and Seagate ST33232A hard disk inner view.jpg. If you want to include Created with CombineZM to an image please use Created with CombineZM. If you still know how many images you have shot for this image you can include this information with <NUMBER>. It would look like this:

This image was created with CombineZM.

or

This image was created with CombineZM by 10 ( It was created out of 10 single images.).

May you can add the template and the number of images which were used to create this image.
--D-Kuru (talk) 19:22, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's better to use the template directly. However, if the image is created with CombineZP Created with CombineZP would be the better choice. This template autocats the image in category Created with CombineZP so there is also no need for extra categorisation.

I made w:Template:Location map Sint Maarten on Wikipedia based on your w:Template:Location map Saint-Martin. It now uses the same location maps as the French part, but it would probably be better to use a map that emphasizes the Dutch part. My estimation is that creating such a map would be pretty easy for you, but for me it's very cumbersome as I don't understand SVG at all. Tissot's indicatrixes

[edit]

Hello Eric, You have made some very informative and convenient displays of map distortion with Tissot Indicatrixes on numerous map projections. However, there are a few equal are projections whose articles will be much more informative, as well for comparison purposes, if Tissot Indicatrixes existed for them. Three projections for which Tissot Indicatrixes will be useful, but doesn't currently exist, are the Gall-Peters, Brehmann, and the Hobo-Dyer projections. They are three equal-area projections, and having tissot indicatrixes means that those and the Lambert cylindrical equal are can be easily visually compared. Would you be able to create Tissot indicatrixes for those projections?Logos161 (talk) 01:25, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

LANDSAT

[edit]

Hi Eric,

I would like to know what program do you use for creating LANDSAT composite images. I use Global Mapper (I bought a licence as I told you about 1 year ago) but I'm not completely satisfied with the results. I have recently discovered that the European Environment Agency has created some datasets (CORINE LAND COVER - http://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/data/clc-2006-vector-data-version) with the land use across the EU. I'm a bit puzzled they used LANDSAT to create their database, as I could hardly trace anything other than major rivers, lakes, forests and some urban areas on my own RGB images. Do you happen to know a guide for creating more complex Landsat composites or a better program for handling the Landsat bands?

Pentaspastos scheme

[edit]

Your numbers don't add up. It appears that you neglected to consider the 20 cm diameter when calculating the force the user must exert on the machine. Unless you meant for the force to be applied 10 cm from the end of the handles (in which case, please note that in the diagram), the values should each be 120 N, not 150 N. Also, it would be more clear to note that the 1200 N force is in tension, and therefore acts in both directions.

You are perfectly right, this was an error mine when I made the drawing. It is now corrected. Thank you very much for your attention and pointing out this fact, helping Wikimedia getting a better content. About the direction of the force, the point of view showed is the force needed on that rope to counter the one due to the weight of the object. You can of course consider that the same force exists in the opposite direction resulting from the hanged object. Sting (talk) 15:03, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RE: LANDSAT

[edit]

Hello,

Well, I believe that even my own composite Landsat images are better than the Landsat ETM+. See this self-made image of Bucharest for example: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/82/Bucuresti_satellite_2005.jpg

You can use the following combination in Global Mapper to get the same results:

 • band 5 - RED
 • band 4 - GREEN
 • band 2 - BLUE
 • band 8 - SCREEN
 • band 3 - OVERLAY
 • band 7 - RED

And I still have two more formulas if you are interested, one for improved vegetation visualization and another one for the water courses, urban areas and transportation network.

BTW I just found out that 1:50.000 scale topographic maps were also used in creating the CORINE LAND COVER database so I think I already reached the limits with Landsat.

Cheers,

Hello, Sting!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

(Map use permission)

[edit]

Greetings, Sting! I was editing the article about Rouen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rouen) in the Greek wiki (http://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ρουέν), and I'd like to know if I could use your regional map of France with the city location on the Greek wikipedia article, and how do I give you credit about your map in it. Do I have to provide a link of your user page at the bottom of the article? Just a note that material from the English article was used in the Greek one?

Thanks in advance, GutsHead (aka Alex!)

Coulées du piton de la Fournaise,

[edit]

Cordialement. --Channer (talk) 12:43, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
