Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open!
[edit]You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear SanoAK,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.
In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
--Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 08:43, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
Distribution maps
[edit]Hi Sano - nice work on making new maps! Just to mention though, one you made File:ThalasseusSandvicensisIUCNver2018 2.png uses an out-of-date taxonomy, this has now been split into two species, Thalasseus acuflavidus (New World) and Thalasseus sandvicensis sensu stricto (Old World). To check up to date taxonomy, please see the IOC World Bird List; Commons follows this. Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 01:40, 21 February 2019 (UTC)
- Hi MPF! Thank You for help and infos! I see, I have to check IOC WBL, HBW and BirdLife Datazone before I try to prepare a new version of map according to IUCN. I will continue by creating of maps (colors, dpi, zoom, projection).. if you have some instruction about regulation for preparing maps (e.g. projection), write me links, please, to be able do it correct way. Thank You! Best regards, --SanoAK (talk) 09:12, 21 February 2019 (UTC)
- Glad to help! The IOC list is the important one, as theirs is the taxonomy followed by Commons, Wikispecies and most wikipedias. Yes, do please continue making maps! It does no matter which projection you use, just select the map you like best in Category:Blank maps (and its subcategories). The most important is to remember to link to the maps you use, it is a condition of the creative commons license (in the past, some maps have risked deletion, because the creator forgot to do so .... mea culpa ;-)) - MPF (talk) 21:54, 21 February 2019 (UTC)
- Thank You very much! Ok, I will study the links.. I use as a background: Natural Earth. Free vector and raster map data @ naturalearthdata.com. Plus... I splitted the map File:ThalasseusSandvicensisIUCNver2018 2.png and corrected the legend and legend description, is no more outdated.. I see more details and new teritories at east Afrika. best regards! --SanoAK (talk) 15:33, 22 February 2019 (UTC)
- Hi MPF! I prepared a File:ThalasseusAcuflavidusIUCN2018 2.png.--SanoAK (talk) 18:31, 22 February 2019 (UTC)
- Excellent, thanks! MPF (talk) 00:27, 23 February 2019 (UTC)

ButeoButeoIUCN2019 1.png
[edit]Hi! I noticed a problem with Eurasian Buzzard (Buteo buteo) map on IUCN site. Try zooming the map in and out - range of this species will change in Eastern Europe (Lithuania, Poland...) and north and east of Black Sea. Therefore the current version of your map looks strange, because eastern range of resident population lies exactly on countries borders. Looks like some kind of error on IUCN site. Can you investigate it, please? Pikador (talk) 11:55, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
- Hi! Thank You very much, really! Some areas are was with double values both breeding and resident at east-west border in the IUCN original shape file. I let the resident overlap (higher) the breeding to correct this mistake. Done. have a nice day!--SanoAK (talk) 13:08, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. ~riley (talk) 04:56, 25 March 2020 (UTC)
- Thank You very much! --SanoAK (talk) 06:30, 25 March 2020 (UTC)
Could you please update this map according to IUCN? Their map looks quite different now (breeding and non-breeding sites are separated). Pikador (talk) 09:32, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, done, plus I need adjust a legend in the main sites /later evening/, where this map is used. I see is not a good idea to give year into a name of file - without that were easear upgrade. --SanoAK (talk) 11:39, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
Request
[edit]Hi, SanoAK! Are you still creating distribution maps? Could you please create and upload a map for Asio flammeus? The one we have on Commons now looks bad quality and outdated. Greetings. Pikador (talk) 09:08, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Pikador, yes, ok, I am working on, regards!--SanoAK (talk) 20:50, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Pikador, I added a new IUCN map as svg - File:AsioFlammeusIUCN.svg, greetings, --SanoAK (talk) 10:19, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
Common chiffchaff
[edit]I've removed your map File:PhylloscopusCollybitaIUCN.svg from the English wiki Common chiffchaff article. Note that English wikipedia uses the IOC taxonomy and your map is based on the IUCN/Birdlife International taxonomy that unfortunately treats Phylloscopus collybita tristis (Siberian chiffchaff) as a separate species. Please take care when adding new maps to English wikipedia articles. Cheers - Aa77zz (talk) 18:24, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Aa77zz, thank You! I have to be more carefull, with regards --SanoAK (talk) 06:12, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Aa77zz, I check the situation at the adding new maps now, I see in IOC_12.2_vs_other_lists.xlsx, do You have another way, how to check the map from IUCN is suitable or not for english wikipedia?, with regards --SanoAK (talk) 09:24, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
SerinusSerinusIUCN.svg
[edit]This map has an error, I know it's based on IUCN map but they made it wrong - populations from N & NW Africa, most of south Greece and mediterranean islands are resident. Correct version of this map is HERE (click it to zoom in). Could you update your map according to this map? Pikador (talk) 13:56, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thank You Pikador, I corrected it, done. --SanoAK (talk) 14:47, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
Another request
[edit]Hi again! Could you create a map of range of Alauda leucoptera? We have one at Commons but it seems incomplete compared to IUCN and Birds of the World maps. Pikador (talk) 08:53, 10 February 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Pikador, You are welcome! Ok, done, here is AlaudaLeucopteraIUCN.svg with regards! --SanoAK (talk) 09:55, 10 February 2023 (UTC)
- Wow, that was quick. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Pikador (talk) 09:58, 10 February 2023 (UTC)
Platalea leucorodia
[edit]This species has only map of european range on Commons, which is a little outdated compared to IUCN and BotW maps. It would be nice if you create a map of global range of this bird. I noticed it breeds in one place in your country. :) Pikador (talk) 08:18, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Pikador, good idea, thank You! It is done: PlataleaLeucorodiaIUCN.svg SanoAK (talk) 20:58, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
Anser indicus map
[edit]Hi SanoAK - unfortunately, the IUCN map from which you created File:AnserIndicusIUCN.svg is very inaccurate, mapped with poor facts and an apparent failure to understand topography. There are no feral populations in Britain, nor in southern Denmark or northern Germany; these (all the yellow currently on the map!) should be removed. There is however a feral population in the west and centre of the Netherlands and northern Belgium, which should be added. References: BOU British List; European Breeding Bird Atlas 2. Further, the western green breeding area marked in northern India / Pakistan / Afghanistan etc., mostly does not exist; there is a small breeding population in the western Himalaya in the extreme N of Indian Kashmir and then north through westernmost China (W Tibet, W Xinjiang, in the Kunlung Shan & central Tien Shan mountains) and the southeast of Kyrgizstan, but none in Pakistan or Afghanistan. The rest of this green area (most importantly, the southern part suggesting widespread breeding in the lowlands of NW India and N Pakistan) should be removed. An additional small breeding area exists, just off the eastern edge of the current map, in the far east of Mongolia and adjacent far NW China. The wintering area in southern India is too broad at its southern end; this should be cut back from the western edge to avoid the Western Ghats mountain range, where they do not winter. Wintering is however more extensive in the Ganges lowlands of northern India and southern Nepal than shown. Finally, there is an additional wintering area in central-southern China around the Yangtze river in eastern Hubei (Wuhan-Huanggang area). References: multiple regional field guides. Could you edit the map as per these details, please? Thanks! - MPF (talk) 21:31, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi MPF! Thank You for the information! The yellow on the map first. Source is the datazone birdlife factsheet, map. Online map of the eBird has lot of observation in Europe. To see eBird map without escapees it required to be logged on.. I will send You screenshot via e-mail. --SanoAK (talk) 16:49, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks! Yes, that birdlife map is as I mentioned, very inaccurate. Note in particular the way the breeding range in central Asia bears no relationship to the topography of the area, showing a claimed (but non-existent) breeding area across a swathe of the lowlands south of the Himalaya. This simply does not exist. The southern limit of the breeding range is in the high altitudes of the Karakoram, not lowland southern Asia. The ebird map too has difficulties; single vagrant individuals will show as equal as a population, so it gives excessive weight to occasional extralimital records (and also reduced weight to areas with few or no ebird users). Yes, send me screenshots if you wish; what I can also do is produce a .png version of the map showing the range more accurately which could then be converted to .svg (I don't have .svg editing software myself). Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 19:50, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
Hi, I restored this file. It was tagged as a copyvio in error. I rather like that you write to my talk page instead of writing emails, unless there is a privacy issue. Thanks, Yann (talk) 20:24, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
- Dear Yann, thank You very much! I will change the licence as "IUCN map permission" to all maps created by me from IUCN maps. Ok next time I will use Your talk page. best wishes! SanoAK (talk) 20:32, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
Maps of corvids
[edit]Hi. Would you mind if you create range maps for Pica asirensis, Cyanopica cooki, Corvus rhipidurus, Corvus ruficollis, corvus/coloeus monedula, Corvus splendens, Podoces pleskei According to IUCN maps? I'm expanding corvids of western palearctic in Arabic wiki so I need a uniform maps. عثمان (talk) 17:16, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, Coloeus monedula is already done and for Pica asirensis I prepared 2 versions:
- with all others maps I continue in preparing.. best wishes! SanoAK (talk) 09:33, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

Map update
[edit]Hi SanoAK - I updated your map File:FicedulaHypoleucaIUCN2019-3.png to (1) remove the split species Ficedula speculigera (Atlas Mts), and (2) to add the migration area in Europe as well as Africa. I don't have svg editing software, so could you edit the svg version File:FicedulaHypoleucaIUCN.svg to match it, please? Thanks! - MPF (talk) 16:24, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
Another map request
[edit]Hi SanoAK - File:Anser Brachyrhynchus IUCN v2018 2.png needs an update to extend it to the east to include Novaya Zemlya, as the species has started breeding there in recent years. Can you do this? I would also be happy to do it myself, if you can let me know which base map to use for the extension. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 23:06, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi MPF, sorry, I was not here.. in a next day I will work with maps, best wishes! 178.40.242.96 04:41, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi MPF, Novaya Zemlya added to map, but I not used Your previous update (east Eng.). SanoAK (talk) 13:40, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
