Porting AjaxQuickDelete to it.wikipedia
[edit]Hello,
Can you help us with the creation of this tool also for Wikipedia? I requested it in it.wiki ([1]). If you need more informations contact me :) --Gce (talk) 13:23, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Gce, which features of AjaxQuickDelete would you like to use?
- {{X-To-DR}}?
- Processing duplicate files?
- Creating deletion requests?
- Auto-error tracking
- The „Quick-delete“ features like adding template to file description page and notifying uploaders?
- Or one of the scripts that make use of AjaxQuickDelete like the RenameLink?
- Are you aware that en.wikipedia has e.g. WP:Twinkle that may also fit your needs?
- Note that this script has some code dependencies so you'll have to import some library gadgets as well.
- -- Rillke(q?) 14:00, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- We don't need Twinkle :) We need a tool that create deletion requests, the "Quick-delete" features and all dependeces necessary to make working it. --Gce (talk) 15:04, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
- How about that: I port it to test.wikipedia.org, you can watch my contribs there and tell me what to tweak and finally you port it to it.wikipedia. Please tell me when/if you have community consensus so we can start. “Hotlinking” (using the script directly from Commons) does not work due to dependency issues (ResourceLoader isn't aware of Commons modules/gadgets when running on it.wikipedia). So we have to port it. -- Rillke(q?) 15:20, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
- They all agree and want to see it work right away. In other words you have great success. You can proceed. --Raoli ✉ (talk) 21:11, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
- I talk also with it.wikivoyage and we agree with your script as a gadget. :) --Raoli ✉ (talk) 22:57, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Re: File:De paseo en la cascada
[edit]Si saque esa foto --TinistaMartina (talk) 15:51, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
Hello!
You inserted an illiterate Russian text without specifying its exact source, but you mentioned another user. To my perception, it is next to defamation. I am astonished that you demonstrated an activity about translation to a language which you, apparently, even do not try to understand. If it is, for some reason, important for you, then why you did not ask somebody who knows Russian to put the translation? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 11:52, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
- Because ArtTop is autopatrolled and filemover so (s)he enjoys some level of trust. If I would always wait until a native speaker of the language appears, Commons would leak a lot of translations. And yes, it is important to me that Commons provides a translated user interface. The source is the talk page of the page you linked to of course which you could have found by just one click. I'll see how to find a solution. -- Rillke(q?) 13:21, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
- Incnis Mrsi, you can be sure that it's not my intention to insult the feelings of great Russian speakers like you. And I would be happy if we could have more native speaking Russian administrators here at Commons who are willing to fulfill edit requests and who on top are tolerant and mellow (e.g. don't have strong opinions about administrators from other projects just because they are; this is BTW some kind of discrimination).
- As far as I can see we are talking about two simple literal error? If not, don't hesitate to correct me. It's nice that you found and corrected them but making such a fuss about this is some kind of overreacting, IMHO.
- But after reading your user page, your behaviour is a lot clearer to me. Thank you for being honest. -- Rillke(q?) 15:39, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. I did not look on relevant talk pages because I saw that the User:FlickreviewR/reviewed-pass page is not (fully) protected and was not so, by the time of your edit or immediately before. It means that the user had not any reason to ask anybody else to make an edit – he was able to do it himself. The only objection I'm able to mount is that "translations" like "Fkikr" can damage the reputation of the site, IMHO more than lack of translation of some minor template at all; but your action does not seem to be in any way incorrect since you just followed a request. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 19:23, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
- Of course I notice that your reply is meant ironically regarding to just followed a request, which I should have better checked. I am curious why Fkikr is that dangerous or why you think it drastically damages the reputation of our site. Thanks in advance. -- Rillke(q?) 01:21, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
- No irony at all (FYI when I want to say something nasty, I just say it). You forgot to put magic words "’s request" to the edit summary, which led to miscommunication as I identified the edit as your own initiative. You are not obliged to have an expertise in any Commons’ affair, of course, only in affairs where you participate in an active rôle. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 11:41, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

upload_by_url
[edit]Die API meldet <error code="mustbeposted" info="The upload module requires a POST request" xml:space="preserve">
--McZusatz (talk) 17:15, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hallo McZusatz, aus irgendeinem Grund (Commons:Village_pump/Proposals/Archive/2012/11#Upload_by_URL Is there any particular reason to target Flickr for the testing, rather than, say, English Wikipedia? — The only reason is because we don't have it working over HTTPS yet.) sind momentan noch uploads von Wikimedia Servern gesperrt.
{{Information |description=test upload |author=[http://www.flickr.com/people/valerii-ukraine-kiev/ Valerii Tkachenko] |permission={{cc-by-2.0}} }}
- eingesetzt.
-- Rillke(q?) 14:24, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
Add a template to user notify script
[edit]Hi there, and happy new year. Have you seen Commons:Village_pump#Template:Commons_is_not_for_articles? Is this something you can do? thanks, Rd232 (talk) 23:31, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
- I wish you a happy new year as well, Rd232. I've done so; but the script is cached for a while and I see no immediate danger so I don't force a change/purge through editing the actual gadget file. -- Rillke(q?) 14:49, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. Rd232 (talk) 15:52, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

POTY
[edit]Saw you editing the galleries, need help?
-- Rillke(q?) 23:13, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
VisualFileChange
[edit]Hello Rillke !
I have just a little suggestion for the VisualFileChange tool : Is it possible to integrate the management of exact duplicates in the tool ensuring that deleted files leave a redirect, or they are replaced in all other wikis? It would be processed more quickly growing number of duplicates in the categories of maintenance.
Thanks for this greats tools !
Greetings. --M0tty (talk) 21:41, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
- Honestly, this will take quite a while to implement. Not all requests are valid. This should go into a different/new tool. Perhaps something like RTRC where you work on a list. -- Rillke(q?) 14:19, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
POTY 2012
[edit]Hello,
In Commons:Picture of the Year/2012/Galleries/Nature views for instance, I read == Nature views ==
. It should be translated. Is there any plan to do so ?
Cantons-de-l'Est (talk) 01:13, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hmm. Grübel… Do you have a suggestion how we could translate this efficiently? I'd even say, create MediaWiki:POTY-Cat-Nature-View since this is needed every year again. I could fetch the required strings from the templates where it is already translated. -- Rillke(q?) 14:11, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
--A.Savin 14:51, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
Welche Software benutzt Du? Adobe Photoshop Elements? Also die Optionen gibt es? Oder diese? Dann nicht "progressive" auswählen, sondern baseline. -- Rillke(q?) 16:37, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- Meine Stalker haben Deinen Post hier schon entdeckt und prompt Help:JPEG#Progressive JPEGs geschrieben. -- Rillke(q?) 16:50, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
--A.Savin 17:36, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
Danke. -- Rillke(q?) 18:10, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- Z.B. hier: File:Spb 06-2012 MichaelPalace.jpg --A.Savin 18:48, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
-- Rillke(q?) 22:16, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Further translations
[edit]I've just created a small translation for a couple things.
Missing c20 cat in Commons:Picture of the Year/2012/Galleries/pl Video & Animations = Filmy i animacje
Done
And (Especially I dunno where can I translate this) a dropdown on the left of the searchbox on file pages and user pages:
Move = Przenieś Done
Gallery = Galeria
Orphans = Osierocone
Untagged = Bez tagów
Find categories = Znajdź kategorie
Purge = Oczyść
Usage of all files = Wykorzystanie wszystkich plików
Global usage = Globalne wykorzystanie
And on WikiLove applet:
Barnstars = Gwiazdy
Food and drink = Jedzenie i picie
Kittens = Kociaki
Could You add this?
P.S. Why theese translation platforms are on commons, and (for example) upload wizard translation is on translatewiki.net? --Rezonansowy (talk) 22:26, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- These translation are on Commons because they are self-made extensions to the user interface and are at Commons only.
- The move link comes from RenameLink, but this has a Polish translation now; other links come from MediaWiki:Gadget-ExtraTabs2.js and for Wikilove, I have to lookup where it has its config. -- Rillke(q?) 22:47, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
- ExtraTabs has a bug; that's why not all users see the translation.
- About Wikilove, I asked at MediaWiki talk:WikiLove.js. -- Rillke(q?) 23:01, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
- I think WikiLove translation is fixed, yeah! -- Rillke(q?) 11:08, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Question about copyright of NFL teams logo
[edit]Hi there my friend! I have a Question and need an answer as soon as possible. I'm translating all NFL teams wiki articles to Arabic wiki, can I use their logos to put on the Arabic wiki or not? b/c it says that the team's logos are all under COPY RIGHTS? ... for example, can I use this logo File:San Diego Chargers logo.svg in the team's Arabic wiki article or not (without creating any problems for myself)? And can I use the NFL logo on the Arabic wiki article? --- I'll be waiting for your answers, Thank you very much! --Qrhoo (talk) 04:46, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, we all need the aswers as soon as possible :-); Can you give me a link to the file in question? A simple URL is enough.
- And did I understand you correctly that you like to know whether you can upload the file to Commons? Or is it already here?
- Kind regards -- Rillke(q?) 22:43, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Verschieben & Ersetzen
[edit]Kann die Funktionalität Try to replace usage immediately using your user account auch nicht anschliessend an eine Verschiebung eingesetzt werden, beispielsweise wenn es eine häufig eingebundene inkorrekte Grafik gibt und man die Einbindungen auf die korrigierte Version umbiegen möchte? --Leyo 09:43, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
So lange kannst Du ja mal User:Sreejithk2000/JustReplace.js probieren.

importScript('User:Rillke/createRedirects.js');
- Dann sollte es funktionieren. -- Rillke(q?) 00:01, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

-- Rillke(q?) 15:44, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

POTY
[edit]Please don't grow weary because of my remarks in the POTY discussion -- they are not intended to criticize you or anyone else, but to help better the process. — C M B J 15:31, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hi CMBJ, it's not because you criticised this year's POTY but for a bunch of reasons. As said by others, please join next year's committee. The time I am able and willing to spend for Wikimedia Commons and for POTY is getting less each year. I would be really pleased if I could pass the POTY-baton to you.
- The volume of votes and pictures grew from a few to an exhausting number (about 1000 pictures and about 130,000 votes in R1) now. That's why, of course new ideas required are welcome. And I am sure, if you try really hard, you can convince the next year's committee by your opinion and views. It's just a lot of work. -- Rillke(q?) 19:33, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Cat-a-lot
[edit]Hello Rillke,
I've been running quick tests with Cat-a-lot at tr.wiki, and I noticed that since the script does not recognize localized equivalents of the word "Category", it is causing certain errors. When the word "Category" is used, everything is a-OK. Therefore I was wondering if the localized term for "Category" could be made a variable, and translated through "/Translating".
I could take the entire code, localize it (as I usually do), and replace the word "Category" with "Kategori", but in that case, it'd not recognize rare instances of "Category", which obviously noone wants.
What do you say?

CommonsDelinker and filemovers
[edit]There's a discussion at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems#Fry1989, regarding the use of User:CommonsDelinker/commands/filemovers by a filemover for a bad request (diff). Perhaps by preventing all requests that don't match the scripts output?--Nilfanion (talk) 23:26, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
- I could insert some invisible characters to the edit summary or make the script and abuse filter calculate some difficult stuff but if a file mover really wants to trick it, they would be able to. DelReqHandler issues
[edit]Hi Rillke. I noticed the message at the top of this page, but I hope you're still around. Commons would just about fall apart without your tools and help.
Anyways, I've been having some problems with DelReqHandler over the past week or so. The functioning has slowed down considerably, meaning that deletions and closes are taking much longer to do. I also get 20+ errors per day, causing me to have to re-load the page and re-click [del]. The error message is
API request failed (internal_api_error_DBQueryError): Database query error
Thanks for your time. Take care. INeverCry 00:04, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
- Hi INeverCry, I am sorry, I know a new version of delReqHandler is overdue. And some day it will come. I was just ill and have a lot of dev work for another project (a rewrite of a program for my fellows so they don't have to buy MS-Excel and MSWindows)
- The error is an API error which I can't change. If you don't mind, I'll forward it to bugzilla. Currently I am not in the mood talking with someone in IRC at #wikimedia-tech webchat but if you would, this will certainly bring a faster resolution. -- Rillke(q?) 23:27, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick rsp. I've never used IRC, so that route isn't for me either. Anyways, today's DRs were pretty bad, with many errors in Firefox and IE. I think I may have to leave the DRs alone for awhile, until this issue gets fixed. INeverCry 00:50, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

- Yes, I ran into this too but maybe there are scenarios where the new line would be disturbing. I think a warning / "remember when inserting templates ..." would be most appropriate. -- Rillke(q?) 21:00, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
- Of course. Would be just fine. Though I am not sure where to put the reminder. (
mdInsertGeneric
is used by append as well as prepend and the reminder is only required for prepend.) --McZusatz (talk) 21:34, 13 March 2013 (UTC)- I think it will be something more sophisticated: A check whether a new line is added and if not, display the warning. -- Rillke(q?) 12:16, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
- Imo there are more instances where the new line is missing than instances where the new line is not missing/not wanted. (another diff). A new line would also comply with the behavior when appending a text (the text also get's placed into a new line and not on the end of the last line). --McZusatz (talk) 18:56, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

-- Rillke(q?) 09:48, 2 April 2013 (UTC)- Danke! Move cat
[edit]Hi Rillke,
Could you have a look at how the auto-delete in {{Move cat}} works?
Its use in practice results in categories being deleted, with no consideration as to whether a redirect is appropriate. In most cases, a redirect will be appropriate but they are not created as a result of the drive-by automation.
I'd suggest the following behaviour is preferable (for the green auto-delete link):
- Instead of deleting the old page, edit and replace it with {{category redirect|new name}}
- Additionally, remove the template from the Commons Delinker command page (if original is empty). Ideally this would have client-side behaviour similar to Cat-a-Lot: Highlight the "done" template instead of removing it until the user refreshes their browser.
Would this be feasible?--Nilfanion (talk) 12:43, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- No need to. --Foroa (talk) 13:47, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- Oh yes there is - there is no valid reason to remove redirects. Question stands - is it feasible? If it is can establish if there is consensus for it.--Nilfanion (talk) 14:05, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- Technically possible, yes but I am terribly busy. N.B.: I guess that not all moved categories should be converted into a redirect and I see that the user who is responsible for 1/2 of the category work done does not agree so it is questionable whether it will be used at all. Please discuss this matter first and if you found consensus, drop me a line. Thank you. -- Rillke(q?) 08:59, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Just a question, is this script capable of detecting and resolving cascade movements, i.e. files moved a second time and the first movement target may have already been deleted for errornous movement? I don't know how Delinker handles this but this may a problem if it first replaces it with the deleted target and later apllies the current location. --Denniss (talk) 13:37, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- It isn't. Otherwise it would be much slower and more complex. IMHO CommonsDelinker should have an admin-interface where one can clean-up mess before it is being processed. Perhaps we should file a grant request (or request-support) so a more reliable tool than CommonsDelinker is developed instead of more fancy things like moodbar and mobile upload. We could make a page where Commons users (and others) sign that it is in their interest something like this is developed. Would you join/sign? -- Rillke(q?) 18:06, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

API errors when deleting
[edit]Hi Rillke! This is related to "DelReqHandler issues" further up the page. I deleted some files with VFC, and there is kind of a pattern. Out of 32 files deleted, in the order they were on the page (and presumably submitted?):
- 11 succeeded
- 4 failed (with
API request failed (internal_api_error_DBQueryError): Database query error
) - 12 succeeded
- 4 failed (with the same error)
- 1 succeeded
This all happened v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y (3-5 seconds per successful deletion). I know this is not something you can fix, but I thought the way the failures were clumped together may be meaningful in some way. –moogsi (blah) 04:48, 12 April 2013 (UTC)
- Deletions are usually slow and, depending on the file size, it can be a real pain. The reason is that MediaWiki (the server sofware) moves the files from one folder to another one (archive). Now you can assume that these folders are not on one machine or server (consider the enormous size of Commons Uploads) but somehow split across a storage network. So the file has to be transmitted through a network and success-handlers must be called etc.
- An improved software would assign a random name to each file (which isn't publicly exposed) after uploading (e.g. an UUID/GUID) and it would not even attempt to touch the file's location or name in the file system but simply "mark" a file as deleted in a database table when admins pressed the delete-button or change the file's public name in a database table when the file is renamed. This would be just a matter of milli-seconds.
- The pattern you found could be interesting for the devs; I am going to forward it.
- I have improved VFC's error handling. It will now automatically retry deleting the file when receiving this internal error.
- The API-server's name should be now included in the error-messages by VisualFileChange. If you find a pattern there, please let me know. -- Rillke(q?) 16:25, 12 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks! Unfortunately these errors started happening just before I got admin so I'm unaware of how anything works when it's "normal". That deletion is always slowish is quite reassuring :) - I will let you know if I notice anything else –moogsi (blah) 16:44, 12 April 2013 (UTC)
DelReqHandler issues 2
[edit]Hi Rillke. I've posted about this ongoing issue on COM:AN. I don't want the DRs to pile up, but this problem has been going on for way too long, as you know. I'm trying to get some ideas on how to speed up the Bugzilla people on fixing this. This bug also makes it difficult and inconvenient to use VisualFileChange to batch delete images, which is too bad because it used to be so great for that. INeverCry 19:14, 12 April 2013 (UTC)
Associating upload log entries with actual images
[edit]Hi, I came across your comment "MediaWiki (the servers) were to slow and the log-timestamp differs too much from the file-version timestamp: Yes that is stupid but nothing I can change, sorry. Each file version should have a stable ID that is logged but MediaWiki does not implement that. Complain at Bugzilla (you have my blessing), please. You could also request a new API module there, that allows me listing user uploads directly." at User:Rillke/Gallery_tool/FAQ. I thought at the very least we could record img_timestamp and img_sha1 in the log entries for upload (on new one's anyways, can't do anything about old entries). Anyhow I did gerrit:59766, I'd appreciate if you have any thoughts. Bawolff (talk) 23:54, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
- This is quite an improvement. As soon as a few examples are available at Commons, I will update GalleryTool and VisualFileChange. You are right that SHA1 and the image timestamp should be sufficient to create an association between the log entry and the image revision. Though, I still hope that media-handling is generally improved. There would be so many benefits assigning IDs to the files that are physically written onto the disk instead of messing with directories, timestamps and a lot more. Thank you for your work and for notifying me. If you like me to test your change in my local wiki, please let me know. -- Rillke(q?) 01:05, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
- btw, I'm going to be trying to do MediaWiki improvements aimed at commons over the next little while, so let me know if there's anything else in particular that you think could really do with improvement. I don't think a unique id (I assume you mean like revision id but for files) probably isn't going to come in the near future, as that would probably involve a significant schema change, which usually doesn't happen unless there is significant motivating factors. Bawolff (talk) 23:28, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
- Its live now - example. (Sorry, I meant to tell you that earlier, it slipped my mind). Cheers. Bawolff (talk) 22:42, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Superseded by UpWiz
[edit]I notice you marked sections about good descriptions obsolete with {{Superseded by UpWiz}}, although good descriptions are as important as ever. The specific technical advice is of course mostly obsolete and should be rewritten, but the advice about the descriptions themselves should stay. A "this section should be updated, as the Upload Wizard handles these fields differently" would be OK. I hope you can do something about this - I do not want to make big changes to a template without knowing the intended use, nor revert. --LPfi (talk) 11:52, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
- The template is only used at Commons:First_steps/Quality_and_description#Good_file_descriptions (so you can change it, if you think it's inappropriate) and the parts that were marked as obsolete, are indeed outdated: You can't decide whether {{Artwork}} or {{Information}} is used, nor which language templates; other versions and permission are also not supported. Don't forget that this is a First steps-page.
- The sections marked by me are merely about technical stuff than about what to consider when describing the work (photo, painting, …) to be uploaded. -- Rillke(q?) 15:54, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
Perhaps you have some ideas...?
[edit]Hi Rillke, I've raised a discussion at Commons:Village_pump#Making_it_easier_for_problematic_files_to_be_brought_to_our_attention, and someone has mentioned "I think we could add an option to Stockphoto gadget where registered and unregistered users could report the files for different reason by choosing different options from a dialog box, it could also point users to AN or the file talk page." Would you mind having a look at the discussion, provide opinion, and if there is some degree of consensus, perhaps suggest ideas on how to implement, etc? [edit]Hi Rillke, I saw that you took part in the Labs-Moving-Survey for the toolserver. You specified your reason like so: "content that is free but not free enough". I understand this is about a non-OSI approved license somewhere? Could you please elaborate on this? What are you using? Are there free alternatives? Can you estimate the workload it would mean to port your software to a free alternative? Silke WMDE (talk) 13:49, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Silke, I just requested an account for hosting JSHint and JSLint, these are JavaScript validators written in JavsScript, following a discussion at our local Village Pump that the JSON-License (under which both tools are licensed under) is not sufficiently free (so I can't host them here anymore) due to the don't use it for evil-clause. There are no (more) free alternatives with a similar quality around. They are just 2 static files (which are currently at Commons but I'll have to delete them soon). They will be used (instead) in JSValidator which prevents accidentally saving invalid JavaScript. This is important because Commons is an image hoster but MediaWiki was written for building an encyclopedia; thus we need a lot of JavaScript to accommodate its shortcomings and syntactically invalid JavaScript can and did cause a major service disruption here.
- Best -- Rillke(q?) 16:02, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
Examples where JavaScript errors that would have been detected by the tool had serious impacts:
- All users with Spanish interface language were unable to see the links for reusing our content — diff=96327430
Examples where broken JavaScript caused a major service disruption:
- Special:Permalink/96312807 — last 3 sections; all created within 3 hours and not all users were affected
- Hello Rillke, sorry for getting back to you late... I posted this as a question to labs-l. I'll let you know if the json license is really excluded, that would sound... funny to me. Silke WMDE (talk) 08:02, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
- It's obviously less fun involved than one may think. One possible solution is getting something licensed from IBM ;-) And personally I only care that software is openSource + free of charge + well designed -- OSI is a misnomer and should be renamed to FSI if they don't approve every kind of OpenSource software. -- Rillke(q?) 12:51, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Template:Information
Danke. Raymond 11:13, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
- Oh no.
<tr>
other_fields=
kaputt gehen) - Das
<div class="description">
- -- Rillke(q?) 14:10, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
-- Rillke(q?) 14:48, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
Raymond 16:20, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hallo Raymond, gerne. Der Fehler liegt bei dem, der die Anweisung „This template shall be added within the template {{Information}}, within the parameter description, at the bottom.“ schrieb, wahrscheinlich ohne überhaupt zu wissen, warum dieser Hack funktioniert und wie lange noch. P.S. Danke für die Nachfrage hier. -- Rillke(q?) 17:44, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Template:Adminstats
Danke. --Túrelio (talk) 07:34, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
-- Rillke(q?) 16:05, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Watchlist notices
MediaWiki:WatchlistNotice.js. Siehe auch seine contribs, und COM:VP#navigation boxes moved to bottom of watchlist page. Lupo 09:15, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
- I am going to create {{WatchlistNotice}} which will be "save to use" for everyone. -- Rillke(q?) 10:15, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
Lupo 11:21, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
-- Rillke(q?) 11:52, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi, in these days I'm reviewing the JS used by it:voy:MediaWiki:Common.js in order simplify them. Today my attention has been caught by the recalled script MediaWiki:Gadget-LanguageSelect.js where you are the main contributor.
I'm not sure to have understood the purpose of this script. Here in commons I suppose that it create the link above on the right side of the user name (please confirm), but in wikivoyage I don't see any effect.
Could you help me on understanding?
Thanks, --Andyrom75 (talk) 07:09, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Andyrom75,
- The link next to your user name is mw:Extension:UniversalLanguageSelector which was just activated at Commons. The purpose of MediaWiki:Gadget-LanguageSelect.js is collapsing multiple languages that are at the same page (e.g. using {{Mld}} or {{En}}{{It}}), for instance at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard: Directly below the heading, there is a select element (ugly, compared to the ULS one, but we aren't paid for software development). -- Rillke(q?) 08:22, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for the answer. Now I've understood the "visual effect". Now I would like to verify if inside it:voy there's at least a page that is using that script. Do you know if there's a specific text that I can search with a bot?
- My point is: if no pages in it:voy is using that script, I would remove it from Common.js.
- Let me know, --Andyrom75 (talk) 08:47, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- You should test whether the window has a console before writing console.log, at least I remember that users of my tools got js errors when I forgot this.
- As for searching, I just know that the script looks for elements having the class description. This is not much but perhaps Raoli who seems to have imported/requested import of a lot of these scripts may help. -- Rillke(q?) 09:21, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- In it:voy:MediaWiki:Common.css it's not present any class named description. I've also performed a text search over the site, but I haven't found any "description" linked to a class name or in general to a JS. Do you think that enough to state that I can remove this script from Common.js?
- Regarding Raoli he stop the collaboration with wikivoyage and wikiquote because of some past issues, so currently I have to unfortuntely manage it by myself. --Andyrom75 (talk) 10:16, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- You have to make a test to know it for sure: Create a template containing
<span class="description en">Abcdefghij</span>
, wait until the search index is updated and then search for it. -- Rillke(q?) 10:56, 22 May 2013 (UTC)- Maybe there's a misunderstanding. I've searched "description" within the wiki code not within the HTML code. Because is somthing that I can perform in very few minutes. Is it correct or the only way is to look inside the generated HTML? --Andyrom75 (talk) 12:35, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- If you can say for sure that this class never appeared in the wiki markup (especially templates are important), it can't be in the HTML output. -- Rillke(q?) 14:01, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- I've searched for "description" into the following domains: main (articles), Wikivoyage, Mediawiki but I missed Template! Thanks for you advice I've found one template (it:voy:Template:Lang) that use that class. This template it's not used directly by any article, but just from this template it:voy:Template:Metacat/Layout. Do you think that it's easy to eliminate Template:Lang from here, in order to eliminate the relevant JS from common.js? --Andyrom75 (talk) 18:34, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- So it looks like you can remove the script; the template seems to be used in metacat but does not really require the script. Nonetheless, you can send e-Mail to Raoli (or if you prefer, I would also offer to do it) and ask. -- Rillke(q?) 19:53, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- There's nothing personal between me and him (at least I think so :-)) because excluding few messages during my entrance in the project I've never had the chance to meet/know Raoli. So I can contact him in case of need. However, for this specific topic I think that as you have said, I can remove the script without affecting anything in the wiki. --Andyrom75 (talk) 20:57, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

VisualFileChange: alle Dateien auswählen
[edit]Hi Rillke/Discuss/2013. Speziell geht es mir um Category:Language templates with no text displayed, wo man mittels freiem Ersetzen wohl einige Standardprobleme lösen könnte.
--Leyo 22:58, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
- Doch, doch, das hat es: VisualFileChange starten → Kategorie eingeben (oder so lassen) → Amount of files to be loaded when clicking on more or when scrolling down auf 500 setzen → erst jetzt auf weiter klicken.

noun 1. a photograph of a person's head 2. an attempt to put the soccer ball into the net by using the head / an actors portfolio or resume including photos of the head 3. a shot aimed at a person's head (esp. in computer gaming)
-- Rillke(q?) 16:10, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

With regards to [4], simply because I don't wish to publish my source code at the moment does not mean that it is either 'closed source' or malicious in any way. I have not decided on the licensing terms for my software, and I'd like you to respect that. -FASTILY 09:14, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
- The choice of license is yours. But you have to accept that I don't like that and it is unusual that closed source is advertised and endorsed through an official statement here. If you think, this deserves dispute resolution, please ask for a second opinion. I would be happy to correct my views, if I recognize that I was wrong. Also I didn't use the term malicious anywhere and I trust you in this regard but that's a decision everyone should make their own. Ok for you? -- Rillke(q?) 15:04, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
- I am not asking for dispute resolution, I would just like you respect my decision, that's all. I don't believe my software is 'proprietary' or 'closed' when I'm planning to publish it under a free license. At the moment I'm cleaning up my code and putting together a github repository to host all my source files, including those of GlobalReplace. All I ask is that you not jump to conclusions and attempt to portray me in bad light when all I want to do is share my creations. It's honestly quite disappointing, especially when it's coming from you, an editor whom I hold in quite high esteem. -FASTILY 18:49, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
- As long as the source code is not available it remains closed source software. Whether you plan to publish it or not doesn't matter in this case. Also, you wrote “Source code is not available at the moment. In the future perhaps, but not at the moment.” which means that it is possibly available but not for sure. You go far to far assuming that I want to portray you in bad light. I never intended this nor do I think that propriatary software /closed source software is something bad per-se; I find it great that you develop software that will help Commons and are relieved that you decided to publish the source code now. THANK YOU. -- Rillke(q?) 19:52, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

- closed source ≠ bad faith. If I would have assumed bad faith, I would have removed the message completely. -- Rillke(q?) 20:26, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
- Well, call it what you wish, this isn't something I want to argue about. Sorry to bother you. Regards, FASTILY 21:07, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
- You don't have to be sorry. It is important to talk about issues, I think so I am glad that you came here. -- Rillke(q?) 21:30, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

rfCU
-- Rillke(q?) 20:03, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
Translate
[edit]Hey Rillke,
I noticed you enabled translation on Help:Gadget-Stockphoto − thanks!
I think there is a lighter way to achieve the same results though − see User:Jean-Frédéric/Sandbox2
The translate extension automatically cuts small chunks − there is no need to multiply the <translate></translate>>
all over the page (except of course with thumb captions and the like).
Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 12:13, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
- Very well. I didn't expect that the extension would be smart enough -- in this case, it wasn't hard work putting some translate-tags into the source. Your version looks fine and knowing about this feature will hopefully save me a lot of work when processing larger pages. One advantage of manual segmentation is that you are forced to read everything carefully again. Would you like discourage adding unnecessary translate tags or was this merely meant as a hint? Thanks -- Rillke(q?) 17:32, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
- The
{{anchor|turnoff}}
shouldn't be included and the== How to turn this feature off ==
should be a separate part. Also, translation unit 7 is a bit cumbersome. When using smaller units, the translation cache can often provide better suggestions… and personally I like smaller units when translating. How do you think about that? -- Rillke(q?) 09:48, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
- What do you think about the translation of Commons:Gadget? Is it intention to have a list of lists (look at the HTML output)? Do you agree (or not) that links like mw:ResourceLoader should be variables? I would appreciate if we would find one line that we can write into a guideline. -- Rillke(q?) 12:42, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
bigChunkedUpload.js
[edit]If I understand correctly linking the
importScript('User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js');
script via my common.js should have resulted in a second "chunked upload" option appearing on file pages beside the pre-existing "* Upload a new version of this file" link. But nope, nuthin'. ? Would you mind helping me to troubleshoot this? I recently had another script (to enable WikEd) fail similarly and am wondering if there is something about my settings or some such that's interfering. Do I need to add something to my monobook.js to facilitate stuff in my common.js? Feel free to look through my .js pages and such. And/or to invite others to do so. Thanks, --Kevjonesin (talk) 00:52, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
- Done Kleines Syntax Problem. --McZusatz (talk) 11:00, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
- Ah, this explains a lot. I had a glad look at the scripts this morning and everything just looked like it should. Thank you, McZusatz. -- Rillke(q?) 11:11, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

In diesem Sinne: weiter so! -- Rillke(q?) 09:47, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
