Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:16, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

re Mass OTRS permission
[edit]Yes, that should be okay, so long as the wording is specific. Commons:OTRS should be helpful with that. Cirt (talk) 19:26, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- If that one ticket specifically has wording from the copyright holder for those images, then yes. Cirt (talk) 19:29, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- You are welcome. Cirt (talk) 19:32, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Osama bin Laden photo
[edit]Obviously I know that, but files must be deleted. en.wiki accepts fair use content, but I can't upload it (I'm in Italy). On de.wiki and fr.wiki fair use is not allowed, so unfortunately articles will remain without images. Cheers--Trixt (talk) 18:58, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
File:Ammophila confocal.jpg may be deleted
[edit]Ammophila confocal.jpg which you uploaded has been tagged with OTRS pending for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the Volunteer Response Team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the Volunteer Response Team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have already sent the permission, please re-send it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org now. Please quote the file name ("Ammophila confocal.jpg") in your email. At the same time, please leave a message at the VRT noticeboard so that a volunteer can follow this up or contact a VRT member directly.

File:Electrolux addisoni dorsal.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
I've converted your speedy into DR, because this requires some discussion due to the heavy external use of the image. Túrelio (talk) 09:24, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Hi Smartse, did you already notify all non-WMF re-users of File:Electrolux addisoni ventral.jpg? --Túrelio (talk) 21:37, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
- No sorry, not yet. I'm busy and have a rubbish internet connection. I'll get on to it now, there only seems to be one. Thanks for the reminder! Smartse (talk) 16:09, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
Deletion?
[edit]Why did you mark File:Gaza rocket November 2012.PNG for deletion? If you click on the source link, click "show more" in the description section under the video, you can see that it clearly says: "License:Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)" --Futuretrillionaire (talk) 00:04, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 21:33, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
Ozone cycle illustration
[edit]Hi! I think there is a mistake in the text of your graphic content at Ozone layer
Current: "Ozone and oxygen atoms are continuously being interconverted..."
Recommended: Ozone and oxygen molecules are continuously being interconverted...
Ozone mulecules contain exclusively oxygen atoms.--Greenunit (talk) 09:29, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Greenunit. I just converted File:Ozone_cycle.jpg to .svg when I made the image so the text is as in the original created by NASA. I agree though that molecules is more accurate since O2 is also a molecule. I'll see if I can edit the file accordingly. Smartse (talk) 09:45, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
Could you ....
[edit]check your crop of Oren laurent.jpg. I can't see what you did wrong, but the photo doesn't look right in the article or at the top of the file page. It does look right in the version box. Thanks for any help. Smallbones (talk) 17:55, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Hey! I replaced your speedy deletion request with a regular RfD because I think the image qualifies for PD-chart, let me know what you think. Thank you. Doanri (talk) 14:33, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
File tagging File:Tan Sri Dr. Lim Wee Chai.png
[edit]This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Tan Sri Dr. Lim Wee Chai.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Tan Sri Dr. Lim Wee Chai.png ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

File:Oren laurent.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)
