How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

multimedia files on commons

hello Mr. Racconish,

I am writing to ask you something, to load a file of a period video of a few seconds using the normal commons loading ?? and for epca movies a different loading method is used, because I didn't see anything in the loading rules about the loading of that genre of file?--2.36.106.85 15:23, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

if I want to upload a movie of the time since here on commons if I have seen many, of the lumieres genre (late 19th century). here I was wondering if to upload one I have to use the commons upload that is used to upload files normally (I also know that those movies are light, given that during about 3 seconds and a little less).

Hello @Yann: je n'arrive pas à reproduire ton problème, je peux ouvrir le fichier avec différents navigateurs sur différentes machines. Pourrais-tu stp vider le cache sur le navigateur que tu as utilisé et essayer avec un autre navigateur ? Si ton problème persiste je referai un téléversement. Bien le bonjour Racconish.

Je viens vous demander un petit coup de pouce si vous êtes disponible. J'aimerais revenir contribuer sur Wikipédia, mais mon compte est toujours bloqué. J'hésite et je jongle entre deux idées, mais il me semble que le plus simple pour moi serait d'entamer un Nouveau départ afin de laisser derrière moi mes démonstrations d'intolérance à la bullshit et au trolling. Alors voilà, je ne sais trop comment m'y prendre concrètement. Que dois-je faire précisément et où dois-je aller précisément? J'ai notifié deux administrateurs sur ma page de discussion (Jules et JohnNewton), mais aucun ne me répond. Quand je lis la page sur le Nouveau départ, c'est dit qu'il faut que je dois débloqué avant de pouvoir l'effectuer, ce qui n'est pas mon cas. Je vous sais érudit en les matières wikipédiennes, aussi c'est vers vous que je me tourne afin de lancer cette démarche pour qu'elle arrive à terme. Je crois aussi que mon adresse IP est bloquée, ce que je trouve étrange un brin.

Misuse of Template:No permission

I see you tagged several files with {{No permission}} like for example File:WikiCheese - Queso de Cabra con arandano 01.jpg. The english version of this template is "This media file is missing evidence of permission. It may have an author and a source, but there is no proof that the author agreed to license the file under the given license. " For this file it's clear who that author is and no reason to doubt that so your usage of the template is incorrect. So please stop using it this way. Multichill (talk) 21:45, 10 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello Multichill and thank you for taking the time to comment on your multiple reverts. The common problem raised by these photographs is they represent food packaging bearing an image for which no evidence is provided it is copyright free. In that respect, there is a need of permission to reproduce the said image. Now I would agree such absence of permission (speedy deletion criterion F5) can also be described as a derivation of non free content (speedy deletion criterion F3) and that the template {{Dw no source since}} might actually be more appropriate since it highlights the derivative issue, though I am not comfortable with the wording of this latter, as it says "the author and source must be given", when I would have preferred it in such case to simply say the absence of permission must be clarified. In any case, as I said, I would agree that replacing {{No permission since}} by {{Dw no source since}} would have likely been an improvement, and therefore, as Carlo Cipolla said, "like most works of supererogation, better done than left undone". On the other hand, not replacing the template and merely reverting might have been "suberogatory", if only because - at least such is my understanding - the normal outcome of declining a speedy deletion should have been to start a regular deletion. At this point would you prefer me to tag these files as derivative works for speedy deletion or to start a regular deletion? Cheers, — Racconish 💬 08:07, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

The speedy and semi-speedy deletion templates are (and have always been) for the obvious cases. For more complicated cases (like packaging, toys, freedom of panorama, etc. ) the regular deletion process should be used. This way it can be discussed properly as these cases are rarely easy. I would just do one deletion request for all the packaging you think is not free.
Files tagged with an obvious wrong reason for deletion can just be removed. The burden of filing a proper deletion request is with the nominator. Oh and I happen to be an admin so this was me closing some deletion requests. Multichill (talk) 13:31, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Thesupermat, je ne sais pas précisément à quelle photo tu te réfères, mais d'une manière générale les photos de fromage dont j'ai proposé la suppression sont des photos qui sont des œuvres dites dérivées, c'est-à-dire des images d'images, où l'image représentée est en même temps suffisamment originale pour être protégée par le droit d'auteur et suffisamment importante dans la photo pour ne pas être couverte par l'exception de minimis. Cela étant tout le monde peut se tromper et il vaudrait mieux que tu me dises précisément quelle(s) nomination(s) te pose(nt) problème. Cordialement, — Racconish 💬 16:09, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Previous deletion discussions

Hi Racconish; it's only now that I notice that you deleted the files nominated in Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Katholische Kirche St. Verena (Rickenbach TG) in March. Did you notice that for three of these files, there were previous deletion discussions with a "keep" decision in 2020? In Commons:Deletion requests/File:Rickenbach TG katolika preghejo 181.JPG, I wrote "We could either obscure/blur the copyrighted 1993 painting in the apse, or we could argue that it falls under COM:DM as part of the interior of a church that it is otherwise most likely out of copyright due to age, as the church was built in 1845." User:Pi.1415926535 then kept these images (also Commons:Deletion requests/File:Rickenbach TG katolika preghejo 176.JPG and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Rickenbach TG katolika preghejo 177.JPG) "per Gestumblindi", so, I think, following the de minimis argument. I wonder, was it a conscious decision by you to overrule the original decision (it's not an entirely simple case), or didn't you notice it? The problem is still there. It's still wobbly (the still frames prior to impact). On a different note, the original video transmission has historic/documentary significance.
