Hello Psubhashish.

You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful.

This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions.

File:Saci-rautara.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Please add the source of the logo -file in the source section of the information template like this . Then, everything should be ok. --RE RILLKE Questions? 11:40, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry if I made you uncertain. It was just intended to draw your attention to the fact that the Wikipedia logo is not free. That seems odd, but if you imagine what people would do with the logo if it wouldn't be protected, you'll understand. I hope I’ve not discouraged you from joining graphics at commons. Yours sincerely --RE RILLKE Questions? 11:33, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use content.

We do this because Commons is a shared media repository. Downstream wikis have different policies based on local laws. Uses that are acceptable under US law, for example, may not be acceptable in many other countries with more restrictive rules.

In addition, fair use is not compatible with our aim as a collection of freely distributable media files.

Therefore, Commons cannot legally rely on fair use provisions.

Non-free content that may be used with reference to fair use may be uploaded locally if your project allows this.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Thanks for uploading File:Swabhaba kabi Gangadhara Meher Odia poet.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Swabhaba kabi Gangadhara Meher Odia poet.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Hello, Psubhashish!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

I have changed the permission, as I myself have shot the video in a cafe which has background noise and public and not just the performer, moreover it was a public gathering and there won't be any copyright issues in my understanding. What you suggest?--Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 13:44, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, first of all: I understand your opinion and I don´t want to see the file deleted (in fact I would like to select it as MOTD on the commons main page). However I think (I am not a lawyer) according to the Indian Copyright Law we may need permissions both from the composer and the performer. Would it be possible for you to get such permissions? Greetings, --Pristurus (talk) 18:27, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The song is actually a folk hymn and not a new composition by the band or the performing artist. In my belief, Folk songs are not to bound to copyright irrespective of the country. I have tried to reach out to the band and Rahul Ram, the performing artist has replied back saying the same that he/his band don't hold the copyright and as it's a folk song none knows about the ownership of it. What I could possibly do when he declined to send the mail for OTRS stating it is too complicated. --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 06:31, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Psubhashish, if the song is folk music (as described by you) I think we only need the permission of the performing artist. Sorry for giving trouble to you, but music in a video is generally complicate in legal sense. Regards, --Pristurus (talk) 19:42, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Psubhashish, referring to your uploads of the past days, thx for using meaningful categories, p.e:

  • Category:Kamakhya Temple instead of "Assam" + "Culture of Assam" + "Buddhism in India by state or territory" + "Guwahati" etc.etc.etc.

btw: imho it's recommended to add the template {personality rights} so an image identifies "common people".

For questions referring to p.e. categorisation please feel free to contact Commons:Help desk.

Hi, as imho mentioned before, thank you for using >meaningful categories< and respecting {categorise}, i.e. please avoid to use 'main caregories respectively avoid 'over-categorizing'

p.e. Category:Roads in Bangalore etc. instead of Category:Bangalore etc.

So you have questions, please feel free to contact the Wikimedia Commons help desk, regards, Roland zh 18:47, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi, saw your tag removal on the CIS logo. The usual process on Wikimedia Commons is to run through the deletion process via debate and an admin will take the keep/delete decision. Regarding the claim that the logo is just text, I believe it would be an inappropriate claim to make, but it would be better to make this claim on the nomination page. A more appropriate approach would to ensure that the logo is indicated on the source website as being freely-licensed. Shyamal (talk) 08:30, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Another option would be upload to the language wikipedias and perhaps Meta and use fair-use rationale as these are admissible on those projects. Shyamal (talk) 08:34, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot Shyamal for pointing. I'm sorry for removing the template. will do one of the ways you have mentioned. --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 09:20, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Category discussion warning

Category:The_Kings_School,_Goa has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Millipede video

[edit]

I have a question about the millipede video you uploaded and added to Harpaphe haydeniana. Was it recorded in Odisha? If so then it is probably not Harpaphe haydeniana, which only lives in northwestern North America, but rather another species with similar colors, and if it's the wrong species it may confuse people. On the other hand, if you add the location in the video description it may help other experts determine the correct species, or at least narrow down the choices. Request

[edit]

Hi,

This is a request from Marathi language wikipedia. at Commons:Graphic_Lab/Video_and_sound_workshop. Your support helps great number of people to get connected with wiki projects.

Thanks and warm regards

Mahitgar (talk) 03:34, 24 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mahitgar, thanks for reaching out to me. I am moving the details you have provided to ensure it does not get deleted from anywhere else. Lets work together on this and get this done. To begin with I have copied your post below. I have one question. Do you have a shortlink for the help page you had mentioned about earlier? A short link, preferably in English would be easy for a new user to go and find more information. I am going to flash the shortlink on the screen so the user reads this. Thanks. --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 05:20, 24 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I updated screen shot of link from 'question mark' to help page below. If you are reffering about creating a short URL for help page. One is I am not aware how to make one. Secondly at mr-wiki any way from so many places/(and ways) we divert users to help page (including we use edit filters for this purpose), so that is not a major concern and short URL we can include in subtitle later too.
  • Main new thing from video clip user need to understand there is a question mark and by clicking there also, he can go to help page. (As far as possible Media Wiki ULS help page we will be maintaining bi-lingual)
Thanks for considering this request. If needed, we do have more screen shots available in Marathi. If you have any further querries please let me know. With, Warm regards and best wishes Mahitgar (talk) 07:38, 24 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Since I posted help requests else where else earlier those people are giving links to online free software tools for down load. But as of now frankly enough I will prefer to have the clip same from you. And in longer run focus is to develop some Marathi Wikipedia users for this task but certainly that would take time. This is just to keep you informed. rgds Mahitgar (talk) 03:09, 25 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Mahitgar, I will certainly help. I have seen the changes you have suggested in the steps and they sound useful. I am going to work on it soon and share a rough draft. Once you are good with that we could post it and you can create the Marathi subtitle for it. If I need any screenshot for clarification, I will certainly ask here. --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 04:28, 25 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Details of your request go here...

Hi, I dont know if this is the right place to make this help request.

  • requesting help for 'help video clip'

We came across one video clip for Universal Language Selector help for Telugu language wikipedia as shown below. The clip is usefull but it does not show how to access help page.

  • In ULS user help link is available after user clicks 'question mark sign' next to the selcted input option; in this case अक्षरांतरण. Screen Shot file link is given above.
  • Confusing part for user in ULS is just by selecting the input option user does not realise, that to reach to a help page he will need to click the option sign (in this case अक्षरांतरण) again to see the question mark. (So your short URL idea is good but I do not know how to create short URLs)

We will apreciate if some one helps us with simmiller clip for Marathi language with w:mr:Marathi Wikipedia background/or commons Marathi main page background. This shall be usefull to marathi language users on commons too and many more wiki projects including that of Marathi Wikipedia.

  • We prefer video clip for अक्षरांतरण input option in ULS (after selecting अक्षरांतरण if you type marAThi it gives मराठी - i.e. Marathi)
    • I am not sure if We can have a chance to fit Following sintence in subtitles
"अक्षरांतरण मध्ये टाईप करा/Type (मिळेल/get): marathi (मरथि), marAthee/maraaThee (मराठी),mahaaraaShTra (महाराष्ट्र), Jnaaneshvara (ज्ञानेश्वर), teMDUlkara (तेंडूलकर) KShaNaardha (क्षणार्ध) pravaasa (प्रवास) pRthvee (पृथ्वी) • rrya ऱ्य, rrha ऱ्ह, E अ‍ॅ, O ऑ."

Steps

[edit]

Hi Mahitgar, to simplify the work flow I am summarizing the major steps below. Please check and let me know if this is fine or need anything more. --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 09:23, 24 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Our Marathi Wikipedia is available at mr.wikipedia.org
  2. Click on the "'Search box" (top right corner), select Marathi
  3. You can type using one of these methods: अक्षरांतण, मराठी इनस्क्रिप्ट २...
  4. (SUBTITLE) अक्षरांतण is easy - you type "a" to get "अ", "rA"/"raa" for "रा", "Na" for "ण" and so on. Click on the question mark that is on the right side of अक्षरांतण to more input-output combinations.
  5. Inscript is different - what you type and what you see is based on certain rules. Click on the ? mark to see more about it.

Hi
Please do change 3rd point as below
  • 3 You can type using one of these methods:अक्षरांतण, मराठी इनस्क्रिप्ट २... but अक्षरांतण, and मराठी लिपी are prominent.
(Reason for suggested change: In ULS-Marathi-set actually मराठी लिपी is Inscript; And since as of now in ULS मराठी इनस्क्रिप्ट २, and फोनेटीक options are not properly supported. Where as अक्षरांतरण and मराठी लिपी are properly supported.)
Please do change 4th point as below
  • 4 Inscript (i.e.मराठी लिपी option) is different - what you type and what you see is based on certain rules. Click on the ? mark to see more about it.
(Reason for suggested change: मराठी लिपी option stands for Inscript becomes clear to the user.) (Some inscript fan got changed earlier nomon clature Inscript to मराठी लिपी to get more users but actually it is happening opposite effect can't help :))

The rest is quite okay. Thanks it is very nice of you. Mahitgar (talk) 11:08, 24 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mahitgar, I have uploaded a draft version of the video. There is little problem with the resolution - it is too very wide. I will fix that. Please have a look at the content part and let me know. I guess, once you add the subtitle it will be alright. --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 12:40, 25 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I liked this draft very much, speacially liked new conceptual additions such as showing What to type during presentation of typing word अक्षरांतरण itself.
Secondly liked usage of that red circle to focus user attention towards the search field (In this only I wish, That in one instance red circle moves upward near "Sign in" (Marathi:स-नोंद प्रवेश करा) whether we can bring down red circle near search field in that frame too so user remains focused at search field).
Third I was concerned how that question mark and help page link can be displayed but you have done very well on that.
I have added subtitles at TimedText:Marathi_Wikipedia_ULS.webm.mr.srt.
Would like to discuss three aspects. The first is if above mentioned red circle remaining focused at search field can be revisited.
The second is at media wiki help page now I have replaced earlier Telugu Clip with the new one Marathi created by you. Since any way new clip at the begining itself Marathi Word अक्षरांतरण is any way displayed so if at all that frame can be replaced or rerecorded with the new one it would reinforce in users mind that help page being shown is for अक्षरांतरण. Ofcource this is not very essential aspect
The third is currently I used bi lingual support in subtitles so each sub title is getting at the most one second and is not enough. Either I separate english subtitles is one option or if we can slow down clip by some thing like 10 seconds to give more time for reader of subtitles. Since I am new to these technical aspects I do not know how good it is to make clip leanthier by few seconds just for subtitle readings sake . So I will prefer to go with your guidance only in this respect.
On subtitles front only two more querries one is in "00:00:01,000" format how(and the purpose?) last three digits are to be used. Seondly I want to add subtiltes for Kokani and Ahirani dialects both these languages use Marathi Script and have language codes but I could not see these language listing in drop down for adding subtitles. I will get added subtitles even for Sanskrit since Marathi people on sa wikipedia are like to use Marathi input system more often.
I am do not understand technical aspect of resolution, for my main purpose practically even this draft file is very good and usable and even if you, update the file as per your time and convinience, I suppose file name/address on commons will remain the same, so I have almost started adding this new file at all the help page locations on mr-wiki.
Thanks again for all your kind support in this respect. Very nice of you.
Warm regards Mahitgar (talk) 03:39, 26 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Mahitgar, I have cleaned up the video and made the changes you had suggested. You need to change the timings for the subtitle in order to match the current one. In my opinion, it should be only in Marathi. Additionally, you could add an English subtitle separately later once the tutorial is finalized as an option. We could keep the the Marathi subtitle as default subtitle. I think it is a brilliant idea to have Konkani and Ahirani subtitle as well. I will also connect you to Konkani Wikimedians who would help to add the Konkani subtitle. I have not made any contact with any Ahirani Wikipedian. May be, we both could reach out to them. I have kept the pace of the video at this moment in this logic - when something is important, I have purposely slowed down to show it to the user for long and sped up the obvious and less important portion. Please have a look and let me know if the current version needs more correction. I have looked at a sample subtitle to understand how TimeText works. it looks like, we have nothing to worry about them as the last three digits remain 000 all the time. Leave the technical part on me, I have cleaned it up. Look forward to hearing about the updated tutorial. Cheers! --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 10:16, 29 July 2014 (UTC) :)[reply]
Thanks This new update has made it short, swift, and much more self explanatory. With this new version I could reduce many of subtatitles. Without increasing present length of the clip (Which seems to be ideal now) I wanted to accomodate few (frequently asked) letters through subtiltles namely rrya ऱ्य, rrha ऱ्ह, E अ‍ॅ, O ऑ. etc I could not do for want of sutable clip time. But neverthless there I am thinking of another option of using a flash strip I will add the example in some time. For Inscript learners further userfreindly tips I am contemplating for flash strip support. With the support of one Marathi web service we have data of most frequently used words on Marathi Wikipedia and I wish we can show most used spellings through flash strips for inscript users. This may take time but will be usefull. In Maharashtra inscript Marathi is made part to 10th exam for english and Marathi midium both. to them also such support will be usefull and we will be able to connect to them thats my wild guess.
I have verymuch liked the latest version and added to many help pages on mr wikipedia. except one place I will right about that after a while. Reagards and Thanks angain.

Mahitgar (talk) 14:47, 30 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your appreciation! Your timely inputs helped a lot to shape this. Please do let me know if you need any corrections in this. After doing this, I began thinking about animated GIF that could even work in a mobile phone. The flash strip you have shared is a GIF animation. I worked a bit on creating vector files and animate them. Here is the result. It is in Odia and you might not be able to read it. But, do let me know what you feel about it. In case of GIF animations you either need to explain the steps in text or create hard subtitle (only monolingual for one file). Creating GIF is painful and time consuming though. BTW I found the last three digits of the TimedText of Videos. It is the position coordinate for the subtitle. If the total coordinate is divided into 1000 parts (in X axis - hirizontally), 0 is the starting point (far left) and 400 is in the middle. You can check any existing video to find out about it and experiment in our video. This option is mainly used to keep the subtitle in the center.
I could not totally understand what you are thinking of doing using the flash strip kind of animations. Is that an animated strip that shows the most used key combinations (Input -> Output) for Marathi "अक्षरांतरण"? If so, it is possible to create. It is just a matter of time. :) --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 22:09, 30 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, First of all let me share good news of very positive impact. If you see stats mediawiki help pages history here 1 and here 2 you will see sudden substantial increase in help page views at media wiki.(and also at mrwiki help pages). That means many number of users are interested and are activating ULS and reaching out to help pages. (At mediawiki, for some reason, to access stats from page history one needs to be logged out and not logged in). Not only that anon and new user edits have increased since yesterday. Trial and error roman script edits have gone down substantially. And the credit goes to you and your video clip.
So it seems we are inching ahead in clearing one tricky bottle neck in native language wiki growth. At mr wiki we were having a good number of reader hits. Looking forward to getting some thing like atleast 20% of visitors on board for ULS every day. In couple of months we will get to know how much that means in actual edits.
Ceratainly at every entry point I have introduced typing help (except one I could not, to that I will come latter) besides I have used even portal site notice with a random helpnotice for Marathi Typing you can visit the same here. Let me know if, you want to know rest of mr-wiki help structure in this respect.
  • GIF Clip: I liked your GIF clip Idea and Odia clip too specially focussing Mobile phone user audiance is great. Only lettle additions as I have done at mr wiki site notice(मराठी मित्रांनो मराठी वापरा=Marathi friends use Marathi), You may give thought to add simmiller in Odia at begining of the GIF clip; end the same with request to share with other mobile users. Secondly it can draw more people to wiki if it spreads viral through mobile to get that effect one thought came to my mind to include seasons Greetings in the clip that apeal particular language people and we introduce it on some festive occassion or say for Marathi Bhasha Divas comes in Feb and in feb usually we get lot of enthusiastic support.
    • GIF clip for mobile can be usefull to introduce commons to upload pictures from mobile. For example upload wizard at commons is well translated in Marathi language. One of our wikipedian has created some app also for wiki-uploads. I dont know after end of GIF clip if some one can reach directly to commons upload wizard link.
    • Either screen capture video clip or GIF clip (language neutral format) I wish (If mediawiki helps) we should be able to introduce at account-creation screen globally (If possible on the basis of IP origination). The reason being If you study newuser account creation. At Marathi Wikipedia Out of total new account creation 98% is still is in roman script since currently Typing help is not available at account creation screen (My efforts to add the help at local level were unsuccessull for technical reasons best know to mediawiki). The second aspect 70% of our new users are actually creating an account first at en wikipedia and then visiting Marathi Wikipedia. At en wiki account creation users of other languages do not get to know that typing in their own lnguage is possible with ULS. If people get to know at that level of account creation itself globally the languages can progress faster is my guess. Ofcourse once some system is up its difficult to get mediawiki peoples agreement to some new ideas. So this may take time but I feel we need to give a try with a slow pace.
  • Thanks for inf on subttile location
  • अक्षरांतरण GIF; You rightlly said,an animated strip that shows the most used key combinations (Input -> Output) for Marathi "अक्षरांतरण" basically to include in the same awareness through iste notice and on help pages for frequently asked combinations and most frequently used words on Marathi wikipedia. The same for inscript too. Actually inscript needs this kind of support more.
Following is the list of frequently asked combinations. I will give you list of most frequently used words on mr wiki in couple of days. (Dont know why show button is not apearing for below table tamplate.
Thanks (Thanks also for coping with my long wish list & long replies :) ) and regards

Hi Mahitgar, thanks for reaching out to me. I faced similar problems with Odia text where the rendering was breaking up. The one stop solution is to create PDF by making all text into curves. You could do that with InkScape. It is a free software and is good for Indian scripts rendering. Try to convert all text into vector curve and mail me so I could help with creating the SVG. In the mean time I will sit on this in the evening and try to do myself in you fail to have proper rendering. --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 06:45, 10 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Chaculia panda

[edit]

Why do you removed the category:People of Odisha from this file? One file can have many categories. You add it to a category which doesn't exist, so the file is uncategorized now. I don't know, why do you want to rename this file, too... I don't know the language of this file, but if it's proper, the renaming isn't necessary. The categories names should be in English, but the names of the files - not. Look at criterions -- "which files should not be renamed". Wieralee (talk) 09:52, 12 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wieralee, Does it look fixed now? I removed that category to make it more organized as I created a new w:Category:Chakulia panda and put that category under w:Category:People of Odisha by occupation. :) I have made a request to move the file titles in English for easy search option. --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 10:02, 12 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, the category is fixed. But the renaming... You are not an uploader of this file. Maybe the uploader preferes his own name. The decline renaming criterion 2 is: "Files should NOT be renamed only because the filename is not English and/or is not correctly capitalized (Remember, Commons is a multilingual project, so there's no reason to favor English over other languages)". Wieralee (talk) 10:13, 12 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dear ଶିତିକଣ୍ଠ ଦାଶ, I thought the names in English would be easier for searchability. The description could have both English and Odia name. Could you let us know if you're fine with the two files of Chakulia Panda having titles in English? --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 10:19, 12 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
See Commons:Language policy too. Renaming files to English is not recommended as we respect all languages. Jee 11:15, 12 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Subhashish, I do not agree with your suggestion. If searchability is the matter, then we can put a redirect from english to odia (same as we do in odia wikipedia). This Chakulia Panda file will be more searched by Odia people than by other. Move it proper to odia name with suitable category. Then leave description in English. --Shiti (talk) 20:10, 12 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Nalabana from far, Chilika.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Hi 大诺史, did you just nominate the file in a hurry or actually checked the summary/permission section about the multiple Commons files this file uses? I am sorry to say that not checking the file attributes simply leads to collective waste of time. Of course I used Photoshop for making this GIF. How one would otherwise make a GIF? A raw file from a camera, if I am not mistaken, does not animate by itself and one needs to use some sort of editing software. --Psubhashish (talk) 16:58, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There’s no need to rename Lingua Libre files

[edit]

Hi,

I come here to talk with you about your massive renaming action. Files uploaded from Lingua Libre don’t need to be renamed. This name format ensures that we can benefit voice samples produced by different speakers. The way you renamed the files prevent another speaker to record the word. It is very important, at least for the French Wiktionary, because we present all the available samples for a given word. You can have a preview of this on this page. We try to present the different accents for the word. I know that some wiktionaries only present a unique sample, but it is not the case for us. I hope you understand. :)

Bye, Lepticed7 (int:Talkpagelinktext) 07:17, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Template:Ping, thanks for flagging. I hear you and other friends who have shared the rationale behind the naming conversion that Lingua Libre follows. However, I would like to follow the Commons naming convention (e.g. these pronunciations]) over the Lingua Libre one. If you check the aforementioned link, you'd find more details about why I'd like to follow the ISO 639 based simpler convention. For starters, it is useful to name files that way from a linguistics standpoint. Here are some examples () of multiple pronunciations of the same word which can work for any number of new pronunciations:
For the matter of fact, I strongly support the idea of multiple pronunciations for quality, diversity -- representation of multiple genders/accents/dialects/environments. There is no real issue in having names like "File:FILENAME_01.wav", "File:FILENAME_02.wav", "File:FILENAME_(ACCENTNAME).wav", etc. It's a standard practice in many places to have numerals as suffix to indicate versions, variations, occurrence, etc. In the examples above, I have uploaded myself all the three files. Would love to hear your thoughts. --Psubhashish (int:Talkpagelinktext) 08:01, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In addition to what I shared earlier, there are other benefits of using ISO 639 standards. When it's not important which user uploaded a particular pronunciation, it is important to distinguish one recording from another just by seeing the name. For instance, File:Or-ଉଦ୍ଦେଶ୍ୟରେ.wav has "or" as the language code (standard w:Odia language, ISO 639-1) whereas File:Ori-nor-ଉଧୁରା.wav has "ori-nor" (ISO 639-3, w:Baleswari Odia). Just looking at the names of two files one can quickly figure out that the first one is the standard pronunciation whereas the second one is a word in the Baleswari dialect. Also, it's easy to club all the recordings of a particular speaker using a category (like this). Hope all these clarify. But happy to hear if you think differently. --Psubhashish (int:Talkpagelinktext) 08:11, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I agree that suffixing with numerals let us indicate different versions. About the LL format, here is how it works: "LL-<wikidata element for the language>-<speaker>-<word>.wav".
The fact is that there are many differences in records, and a numeral doesn’s let you express this. How can you know that Fr-président01.wav is the noun or the verb. How can you know which speaker is? Finally, if we want to rename, we have to take extreme care of the LL elements. For example, by renaming your files, you broke a lot a LL elements, such as this one. It is not unfixable, but it creates dead links. I hope my explanations are clear enough. Bye ! Lepticed7 (int:Talkpagelinktext) 08:24, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
About the dialects and the languages, I don’t know how it work. I thought it was possible to indicate any language in LL, but it doesn’t look like so. I suggest beginning a discussion with Template:U and Template:U. Bye ! Lepticed7 (int:Talkpagelinktext) 08:28, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for sharing these. I am actually aware of the LL naming convention. As I shared earlier, I am not yet convinced that a filename needs so much details when there are other ways to do the same. For instance, your explanation about the French heteronym answers your question about using numerals for heteronyms. Odia script being w:abugida and having so many characters does not have the complications of heteronyms. But one should not use numerals but use the form in bracket (like examples of (nom) and (verbe) that you have shared above). I still don't get the reason to add a complex filename when a) adding numerals can fix the issue with multiple files (either multiple recordings by the same speaker or by different speakers), and b) adding bracketed forms (like (nom) and (verbe)) can help deal with situations like heteronyms. Devising a complex naming convention is more like reinventing the wheel when existing systems are still capable to handle the need. My apologies that LL links are broken now. I LOVE LINGUA LIBRE and I love using it. If you look back, I have been an active user of Lingua Libre (with a hiatus) from the very beginning and have recorded thousands of pronunciations using it. I met the team in two Wikimanias, have gotten on a call to provide inputs, and have created OER and have hosted live tutorials to offer help to others. But I just love simple naming and Commons naming convention seems to have a solution. --Psubhashish (int:Talkpagelinktext) 09:14, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Psubhashish, I’m happy to read you !
I will answer about why we have choose that naming convention for LL (LL-<wikidata element for the language>-<speaker>-<word>.wav) :
  • First, it’s for help the research. A simple glance is enough to identify a file. When you have just a numerals to heteronyms, it’s impossible with a glance to determine who have created the file. There is already 250 000 files created with LL, and given the ease of the tool, it’s close to exploding the scores. There is therefore a risk of having the same word recorded more than ten times.
  • Second, your codename have a big problem with dialects or languages without ISO code. Our solution juste need a Wikidata code, so you can register every idioma that you want.
  • Commons naming convention just say to have a comprehesive name, ant LL isn’t so cryptic…
I hope you like the news LL version ! Lyokoï (int:Talkpagelinktext) 12:20, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't think that introduction of new schema for naming pronunciation files was good idea. Does source of pronunciation (LL) matter at all? Why speaker name is more importance then word itself (order in file name)? --EugeneZelenko (int:Talkpagelinktext) 13:46, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Ping It’s not new, its have 2 year old ! Yes source matter for showing the process, the quality of files and to separate oral corpus when files aren’t categorized. The order in file name isn’t by importance… Is just more readible to put the word at the end and not between other informations. Lyokoï (int:Talkpagelinktext) 16:55, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Ping and Template:Ping: I love the new interface for Record Wizard. I think one can record up to 1000 words a day. :-) Just to clarify, I am not saying why LL style naming. What you said about languages lacking ISO code is very true. There are oral languages too which do not have any formal writing systems. I in fact secretly wish that there is a way inside Lingua Libre for uniquely tagging each word in oral languages too so that the native speakers can contribute in building a library of pronunciations (as it would eventually help them for speech synthesis projects). But LL rules should not be written in stone. Meaning, a user should see recommendations on LL name convention. So, by default all users would not worry about the naming and LL's defined system will take care of the names. But if there are advanced (read disgruntled!) users like myself, they should be able to define a certain way of naming. As I mentioned earlier on the LL Discussion page, they [advanced users] should also be able to add metadata, custom categories, etc. This is an example (it has bilingual description, IPA and Romanization for a non-native speaker to learn about the pronunciation, and has a custom category for the date it was uploaded). The example file was uploaded using PattyPan which allows a csv creation (so you can have more customized metadata and categories) as opposed to a simple wordlist.

To sum up, please do add an option to customize naming, uploading a csv template (Pattypan does a really good job at this) to customize metadata including category. (I was going to write this in the LL Discussion page but you all engaged here :D ) --Psubhashish (int:Talkpagelinktext) 17:44, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you moved files like this one File:Or-ଏକ.oga. That's fine. You suppressed the redirect. That's bad. Why? How shall links on pages on wikiprojects that link to former titles of File:Or-ଏକ.oga get fixed? Now COM:CDC bot can't do that because of missing info and the links will be removed as broken.
