Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:52, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Greg Goebel's images
Hi. Please provide exact sources of this images - in most cases you link to something what doesn't exist (like in here: File:Avmig15 2 03.png). Second of all, please provide the author's permission for the certain free license or provide the link to his webpage where he wrote terms of use of his images. Otherwise images will be deleted. Masur (talk) 09:29, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Hello!
Please read COM:OVERCAT - very important. You are adding Mi-8-categories spuriously to images. --High Contrast (talk) 17:09, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry, obviously don't know what I am doing. Can you fix it?? and give me a precis of the problem and solution.Petebutt (talk) 17:14, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- Nothing serious; you were simply adding files to Category:Mil Mi-8 parent category when they had already been sorted into subcategories. For example, File:Mil Mi-8 pitot tube Torpin Tykit.JPG is in Category:CCCP-25267 (aircraft) and File:SPARK+ Mil Mi-8.jpg is in Category:RA-24653 (aircraft). Both of these aircraft categories are subcategories of Mil Mi-8; hence it was not needed to add them to the Mil Mi-8 parent category. To keep categories at a manageable size (usually below couple of hundred files; frequently smaller) files are preferably sorted into the most specific subcategory. Your edits did not break anything, they were simply redundant. MKFI (talk) 17:54, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- ...but serious enought to be mentioned. Anyway, Petebutt, happy editing. Regards, High Contrast (talk) 18:07, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

File:AW650 USGov.jpg
Hi Pete, Can you explain why you uploaded a low resolution image over a higher one, generally we prefer the highest resolution that we can get, if a lower resolution image is needed one can be loaded under a different name, e.g File:AW650 USGovlowres.jpg. You used the rationale "Low resolution to allow use on Wikipedia pages", the only reason I can think of where this would apply is if this was not a free image, and a lower res image was needed to comply with fair-use criteria. I can see why it might be possible that the image is not free, that the FAA used an image from someone other than a federal employee and that it is infact not PD. If you believed this to be the case then the proper thing to do would be at the very least tag the file as fact disputed.--KTo288 (talk) 00:27, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
- I don't remember that, but if I did, the intention was not to replace it but ADD a lowres version that loads easily when embedded in articles. Apologies if this has caused problems.--Petebutt (talk) 09:56, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
- Well I guess you know better now, but to recap if you load an image to Commons with exactly the same name, then the new image overwrites the existing one and the overwritten image is no longer available to use, if loading alternative versions of an image change the name slightly, and by alternative just reducing the resolution creates an exact dupe which are usually speedily deleted (cropping it I guess will make it even smaller). No harm done as no one else seems to have noticed it, but to reiterate we prefer to have the highest resolution possible of an image. I'll recover the file later. Thanks.--KTo288 (talk) 11:14, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
I know that it patently isn't a commodore or a falcon, however, it isn't patently obvious that it isn't a rumpler. Please provide some supporting information for your request. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:44, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
- Compare strut arrangements and also the faired over lumps just behind the propeller, position of the footstep in the side of the fuselage. attachment of the landing wires to the fuselage top longerons, etc. etc. Apart from that the administrator ignored my note and didnt re-name it to AEG C.IV.--Petebutt (talk) 05:28, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
Hi, I would recommend, that you use the "duplicate" tag in such cases as the above, not a deletion request, as this is mostly for copyright violations. Also, just add the ":" in front of "File:" so only the file name is displayed and not the complete photo. You can also use the tag "rename" for files with wrong names. When files are duplicates, it is common to keep the one which was uploaded earlier. Cheers Cobatfor (talk) 13:21, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info, didn't know about the duplicate feature. I will use it in future if required, assuming I can find it!--Petebutt (talk) 14:49, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
- The template is just ((duplicate|File:name of the original one)). Use these brackets: "{" "}" instead of (). I am not using these brackets here - otherwise we would have the template here. Cobatfor (talk) 16:35, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
Copyright status: File:Besson H-3 at Paris Salon 1919.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Besson H-3 at Paris Salon 1919.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

The Editor of Flight Global, Michael Targett, wrote the following on 13:01, 12 February 2009 (UTC) at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Aviation/Style_guide/Layout_(Aircraft): However one thing I am happy to do from this moment on is agree the reuse on Wikipedia of any material from the actually PDFs in the archive (as long as there is a credit and link back to the original). By this I mean that any reference in the text can be used and importantly any of the images replicated in the PDFs can be used. It's not a perfect solution as there would have to be an element of screen grabbing the images and saving and formatting etc ... However the images in many cases would still enhance a large number of Wikipedia entries and, from my point of view, the images are obviously not of a high enough resolution to be reused in print by a random commercial entity.
If that doesn't constitute a licence I don't know what does.--Petebutt (talk) 08:20, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
