Tip: Categorizing images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]][[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Naming your media
[edit]Hey, lovely images of bird's nest fungus etc. Please ensure that you give a proper name for the media though. See Commons:File naming for details. Many thanks for participating in the SVG Translation Campaign 2019 in India. It had been quite a successful campaign—194 users from 19 Indic languages took part in the campaign for 38 days, and have created more than 2,500 SVG files, all of them having labels in native Indian languages. Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.
If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.
If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.
Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".
If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Exact location?
[edit]Hi PJeganathan - I just added one of your inaturalist photos to Commons under its cc-by license File:Cupressus torulosa, Dharchula, Uttarakhand, India 1.jpg. The location you gave there is to only ± 1.1 km (from here on google maps). I know it is nearly 5 years ago, but can you remember its exact location in any more detail, please? Share Your Struggle 2021 (15 - 31 August 2021) is a public photo competition on Wikimedia Commons. The goal of the project is to improve coverage of free usable media files related to various struggles, such as, natural disasters, health crises such as COVID-19 pandemic, social movements, conflict-torn areas, and any other humanitarian crises. The goal is not only to document crises, but also humanitarian efforts and acts of kindness that happen during such crises.

If you want to take part in WSC2023, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.
If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.
If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase (such as Russia), please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2024.
