Hello, PJeganathan!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Commons:categories and avoid "over-categorization"

[edit]

Hi, categories of some of your uploas have been checked, thank your for checking Commons:categories for further hint and avoid "over-categorization", see p.e. here. btw: please avoid to upload media with Commons:Watermarks. Best regards, Roland zh (talk) 21:09, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello PJeganathan! I couldn't find the other Mongoose picture from your friend. Is it already uploaded here on Commons? Let me know, I can do the deletion as soon as I know where the replacement is. Thanks for your time! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:04, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Thanks for this. The other photo is here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Indian_Brown_Mongoose_Herpestes_fuscus.JPG

Thanks for the info! Hmmm, the picture is not really the same. The new one is more distant. I'd like to keep them both, if your friend agrees? --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 15:45, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the information in the old file in order to properly attribute your friends work. I hope this will be satisfactory for your friend. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 15:48, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Hedwig! This is what we wanted. BTW it is the same photo but cropped one to show the animal closer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.216.96.237 (talk • contribs)

Wonderful! Thanks for the upload! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 18:58, 23 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Permission of photo usage

[edit]

Dear Mr. PJeganathan, I am writing to you for your kind permission to use the nice photo of Sus scrofa(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wildboar_in_Anamalai_hills.jpg). I want to use it in our student textbook about invasion biology. The URL and your name will appear together with the photo in the textbook. Thank you in advance. Sincerely, Mingxing

No Problem. Go ahead and use it. If possible please do send the pdf of that particular page (of the textbook) in which you use the photo. Email mail me - pnagej@gmail.com. Thanks.

Naming your media

[edit]

Hey, lovely images of bird's nest fungus etc. Please ensure that you give a proper name for the media though. See Commons:File naming for details. This is very important because renaming media is not straightforward as it is a function that is only available to admins. Prashanthns (talk) 17:39, 13 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Prashanth. I normally do this but somehow missed it during the bulk upload I did sometime back. Have just sent a request for renaming. PJeganathan (talk) 04:07, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Comments Very nice composition, but to my eyes, the lorry could be a little sharper and the background behind the lorry is too bright. Could you fix those things? If not, I'll have to decline the photo, in view of its small size. -- Ikan Kekek 05:51, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

File:Fish fry shop in Poompuhar JEG6166.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Linear infrastructure intrusions has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, Wiki Science Competition 2019 and Wiki Science Competition 2021, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2023 has started in almost all the countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2023, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase (such as Russia), please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2024.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.
