Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.

Look at Commons:File renaming page, please... Harmonization reason is dedicated for templates and Wikisources only: Just because images share a category does not mean that they are part of a set. If you are not an original uploader, you can choose between Criterions 2 and 3.

Cropping images

By way of information for the future, when you want to crop an image, as you did with File:Union Black at Tate Britain, 2010 edited.jpg, I suggest you use the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops you should upload the cropped version as a separate new image, but you have a choice. It looks like you retouched this image so you can use the CropTool first, and then overwrite it with the retouched version after all the details are transferred by CropTool. Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 1 May 2023, 23:59:59 UTC.

Not sure if your aware of this but you may have noticed that we don't as a practise crop tiff files. We use them purely as reference files Best practise is to convert them to jpg, using GIMP. While doing this, GIMP will also allow you to fine rotate images which may be of use. jpg files scale well on websites whereas tiff doesn't. They are also dramatically smaller without losing definition, and therefore upload faster. For Example a tiff of 32.65mb, could be converted to a jpg of as little as 300kb, without showing any noticeable degradation on a website. Broichmore (talk) 12:55, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
