Missing license tags
Hi, thanks for pointing out the missing license tags in my recent upload. Somehow they got removed in the script. I’ll add tags as soon as possible. Ambrosiani (talk) 06:44, 5 June 2019 (UTC)

Gargantuan gallery pages
Hi Magog - your OgreBot has created a number of gargantuan gallery pages, like Commons:Wikimedia Österreich/recent uploads/2018 October. These are so large that they do not load properly, and are impossible to edit without crashing the would-be editor's computer. Could you split them up into multiple smaller pages (e.g. uploads per day, not per month), please. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 10:34, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Jean-Frédéric: you added this gallery. Could you please this fix immediately? If not, I will delete the pages altogether, since large galleries are harmful both to the server and the user's browser. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:40, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for the action on this! - MPF (talk) 00:53, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, I had misconfigured that gallery (it was supposed to gather waaaay fewer files) and never got around getting what was wrong :-(
- Thanks for the ping − removed the config for OgreBot and deleted all the subpages.

Momni Page Deletion
Hi Magog the Ogre! I was wondering why you took down the Momni page, the wording was objective and it was not promotional. It followed the instructions when it came to references reliable and trusted sources. In my mind it seemed to fill all of the requirements it needed to be on wikipedia. I would love to know what your thought process was on this! Thank you!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Timtanman (talk • contribs) 15:15, June 14, 2019 (UTC)
- @Timtanman: The pages were deleted on English Wikipedia by User:Jimfbleak and User:SlimVirgin. The only thing I deleted was the logo you uploaded based on the deletions by the first two administrators. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:37, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
Query
Hello Magog the Ogre. Hope that you can clarify my doubts on this. You uploaded this file on en.wiki and tagged it with "Do not copy to commons". However, I found a similar file here on commons and it is used across 30-40 wikis at the moment. I wonder if the one on commons might be a non-free file. 大诺史 (talk) 10:57, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
- The file on commons is also used on the French Wikipedia, which is considerably more strict in its rules. 大诺史 (talk) 10:58, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

Re: Copyright status: File:Inti-logo.png
Hi Magog! The logo belongs to the Argentinian Government and therefore is in public domain. I work there and the logo is the one you can see here: https://www.inti.gob.ar/ but designed to fit in an email. In fact, is update of the file INTI.svg but I don't know how to replace it. It is the same licence. Can you help me with this? Many thanks --René Godoy (talk) 19:42, 6 June 2019 (UTC)
- @René Godoy: not all works published by the Argentine government are public domain. There are some exemptions laid out here: Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Argentina/es, but I don't see how any of them applies to a school. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:24, 6 June 2019 (UTC)
- Magog INTI is not a School, is an office from the Government under the . It is called "Institute" but it belongs to the Ministry of Production because it is focused on Technology research. The licence is {PD-AR-Gov} and should be changed. Many thanks! --René Godoy (talk) 10:49, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
The source information was there, but I've since made it more explicit and put it in the right place. If anything else is needed to get the nsd tag removed, please let me know. Wikiacc (talk) 13:52, 20 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Wikiacc: no it's fine, you can remove the nsd tag as long as it has a source. In this case I didn't realize the author was actually the source. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:58, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

Sorry, I was not the one to upload it, I just uploaded a better version. The original uploader was Xtreambar, and sorry, but I do not remember where I found the better version. Deleting Hockey Team logos?
Why did you delete a hockey team logo off wikimedia? (EC VSV) AlexMPgh412 (talk) 01:10, 30 June 2019 (UTC)
- @AlexMPgh412: The reason is linked right there in the deletion rationale. May I ask, are you the artist? If so, and you are willing to release the logo under a free license, we can undelete it. If not, we can upload the logo to English Wikipedia where it can be used. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:59, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

I mistyped "own" as "{own" on some uploads. The changes of 200 files by your bot made it not really better:

misbehaving galleries
Hello Magog the Ogre,
You have removed misbehaving galleries bur at least one part was ok - "* [[:Category:Media from the Israeli Police]] | [[User:geagea/Media from the Israeli Police/New files]] | 200x200 DAYS_PER_GALLERY(1)". It's ment to be for reviewing new files uploaded according to {{IsraeliPoliceLicense}}.
And about the other part/s. Can you help me how to fix them to be ok. They are needed. -- Geagea (talk) 10:26, 9 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Geagea: can you please monitor the galleries and identify any categories that should be removed if they fail? I got pinged for your galleries quite a bit before I removed them. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:21, 14 July 2019 (UTC)
- Ya. Will make 2 galleries. The first one definitely didn't made problems and will check every notification about the second gallery. -- Geagea (talk) 11:09, 14 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Geagea: so how would you like me to implmement this? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:09, 14 July 2019 (UTC)
- first I'll put back: "* [[:Category:Media from the Israeli Police]] | [[User:geagea/Media from the Israeli Police/New files]] | 200x200 DAYS_PER_GALLERY(1)". - this one does not make problem. I'll go through the problems in my talk page and tru to solve them. Then I will add category Israel and will see if there are more problems. Eventually I believe it will be ok. -- Geagea (talk) 21:15, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

Your edit
Hi,
Concerning File:Tłok pieczęci powstańczej Rypina z 1863 r. - pamiątka rodzinna po powstańcu styczniowym Antonim Janowiczu (1839-1921).jpg and your edit there: the file did have a proper license tag, which was later removed by the original uploader in an attempt to revoke the license. As far as I understand, releasing the rights while uploading is irrevocable, and hence that action was legally futile. On the other hand, the file is a 2D copy of a 2D object (seal from 1863), which makes it dubious if the upolader indeed had any rights whatsoever.
Gżdacz (talk) 09:34, 14 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Gżdacz: on Commons, we consider coins to be 3D objects, so the license is not dubious. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:36, 14 July 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, Gżdacz (talk) 20:59, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

Mass remove
Hi Magog. Is there a way that you can solve the error "Unstrip size limit exceeded (5,000,000)" as seen on numerous recent upload pages. E.g. Commons:WikiProject Aviation/recent uploads/2014 May 3. Perhaps you can tweek the bot to just put the file name without the File: part and it can reduce the page size by about 30-40k bytes. 大诺史 (Talk/留言/토론/Discussion) 16:41, 17 July 2019 (UTC)

LGBT+ Conservatives
Hi there, I was somewhat surprised to see that File:LGBT+_Conservatives_Logo.svg had been deleted for Copyright Violation. Was this simply a tagging issue or something else? I am unable to see the deleted file to check, but blanket deletion of all political party logos would seem to be a fairly major step. Thanks. NoNotI (talk) 18:34, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
- @NoNotI: The source of confusion here is where we host the logo. Wikimedia Commons only allows free logos, namely, those that have fallen into the public domain, those whose copyright is explicitly released by the organization, or those which are too simple for copyright. Wikipedia must host all copyrightable logos with a fair use rationale. This image was improperly tagged as too simple for copyright, i.e., below the threshold of originality. It should never have been uploaded to Commons without permission from the copyright holder.
- Let me know if you have any other questions. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:04, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

- @Phyrexian: I've done this. Your license works well, but personally I prefer {{self|cc-zero}} since it carries more legal authority. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:08, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks. Also I have a question, I need to put a licence tag to wathever picture that is already in the public domain just because I shot the photograph? Like those pictures of anciend artworks I uploaded recently: 1 2 3 4 5. Could you also check if the tags in those pictures are allright? Thank you very much. :-) --Phyrexian ɸ 18:28, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Phyrexian: No, you only need to license 3D artwork photos, 2D artwork photographed at an angle, or 2D artwork with other elements. The first one you provided above has a frame, so it might need a license. The latter two defintiely do not.
- Nonetheless, you can add the {{Licensed PD-art}} template to be sure. Wikimedia generally takes the position that photographs of 2D artwork are not copyrightable, but that template adds special protection in court cases or countries where it is. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:37, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
- Done, thank you for the advices. I quite know how all this licence stuff works, but I always have troubles in finding the right templates here on Commons. :-) --Phyrexian ɸ 19:07, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

- @ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2: Thank you. Nonetheless, I don't see any particular reason to doubt these are self-created. They are from similar photography, and none appears via Google image search. I can't speak for your country but it's actually pretty common hobby to photograph trains.
- Also, may I recommend you make a small change to your signature to wrap it in <bdi> tags, as I did above? This isolates your signature so the date appears correctly. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:00, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

Suggestions
Hi Magog. I would like to discuss with you the feasibility of having OgreBot update all User:OgreBot/Uploads by new users/ subpages after a specific amount of time (e.g. update every week). This is to facilitate patrollers or whoever is looking at the pages to have a more up-to-date info, also the update reduces the clutter as there might be a lot of files that are deleted by are still linked at the page. 大诺史 (Talk/留言/토론/Discussion) 06:04, 27 July 2019 (UTC)
- @大诺史: that is a good idea. @EugeneZelenko: do you think I would need a separate request to authorize this, or can it go under the current authorization for the bot? Thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:49, 27 July 2019 (UTC)
- PS. Once a week is definitely too often, there are thousands of galleries. I'd go with maybe several times per year, tops. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:02, 27 July 2019 (UTC)
- How about having the first update to be 2 weeks later, and subsequent be per month? As quite a number of the files will be gone in the first 2 weeks. 大诺史 (Talk/留言/토론/Discussion) 01:16, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
- I think manual updates are good enough. It's always reasonable to have most up-to-date version before starting patrolling and automatic update could not archive this. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:59, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
Behavioural evidence
Hi Magog. As I’m unsure about this, I’d like to clarify some doubts. Will a CU conduct checks on accounts based on behavioural evidence (File naming conventions, way of editing, etc.)? 大诺史 (Talk/留言/토론/Discussion) 16:24, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
- @大诺史: yes, although I can't guarantee we will honor it. If feasible, the request should be made in public. If you are worried about divulging personal details or embarrassing current editors, you can send an email to any checkuser. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:01, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
CheckUser
Hi In others Wikimedia projects, CheckUsers requests who are the same than the last are rejected for lack of evidence. I could give you arguments that the request were not legitimate. Wawa and Berkshire Bank
Please update the Wawa map. Countless new locations in Florida have opened down there since 2012. Also, I'd love it if you create a Berkshire Bank map. According to their website, they're in CT, MA, VT, PA, NY, and NJ. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thomas J. Seymour (talk • contribs) 19:37, August 4, 2019 (UTC)
- @Thomas J. Seymour: I've uploaded the Berkshire map here: File:Berkshire Bank footprint.png.
- The Wawa map will be much more difficult. I can't promise anything. To explain: most sites have changed since I first created these maps, and they no longer list all of the locations in one place. Instead, one has to get clever about using zip codes and reading from their store locator. Even that isn't always possible, since they use protected APIs. File:Turin-a-i.jpg
Hello!
You sen me request for licensong status of the file Turin-a-i.jpg. But I already stored (cited) information about license on the wiki-page of the downloaded file. - @Grumbler eburg: all uploaded content must have a license tag, not just a text explanation. In your case, it looks like {{Copyleft}} would suffice. Please add the tag and feel free to remove the notice. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:06, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- OK. Thanks for explanation. I can't look {{copyleft}} on help page of the file-add-wisard as permitted (recommended) issue for the copyright notice. --Grumbler eburg (talk) 01:26, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
files I uploaded (copyright message)
Hi. I created and uploaded those files (oil balance, gas galance, coal balance) using a python bot. In the previous years, my script only created the files and I uploaded them manually.
Most of the new files replaced old ones, as updates. This the licensing was already in place. Indeed a few files came as new ones, not updates. They don't have a copyright choice, i'll look into it. Raminagrobis (talk) 11:26, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
If this is the same file as en:File:Logo of Hansa market.png, I'm not sure how it's above the threshold of originality. The ship shape is extremely simple, with only a silhouette, no details, and a solid fill color. As far as originality goes, it's just a hull with rudder, mast, and basic sail. These are very common and basic elements of old-style ships. Opencooper (talk) 03:09, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Opencooper: a simple shape is not copyrightable. A series of simple shapes eventually passes the threshold. If you look at COM:TOO you will see this is almost certainly above the threshold. As such, I cannot in good faith restore the file at this time. If you'd like to appeal, feel free to make a request at COM:UNDEL. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:56, 9 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi Magog. Please speedy this file. Thanks. 大诺史 (Talk/留言/토론/Discussion) 16:46, 9 August 2019 (UTC)

Would you mind if I made the block you did on this account indefinite? The chance of them learning licensing is incredibly slim and I already said that if they continued to upload copyright violations the next time would be indefinite. They appear to only be focusing on that one logo and will do anything to get it forced on here. --Majora (talk) 21:03, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Majora: no need, I've deep sixed him. CU evidence showed he's used abused at least one other account, and given this travesty, probably several more. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:58, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
What are you talking about "missing license"? It is clearly {{Kremlin.ru}} and labeled as such. If you question http://archive.government.ru/ as an official archive site, you only have to do a little reading. You can click "Eng" for an English version, but to be honest, Google translate is probably better. Cheers, --SVTCobra 21:40, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
- @SVTCobra: it is your responsibility to add a license to the images you upload. You have added a source but no license tag, which is why the page is currently tagged as missing a license in the categories on the bottom. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:38, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
- What are you talking about? Look at it! It has the {{Kremlin.ru}} license in the section called "Licensing". I added it upon upload. You keep insisting it doesn't exist! Are we in parallel universes? --SVTCobra 02:11, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
- @SVTCobra: if you read the documentation on the template you just provided, you will see that it is not a license template. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:25, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
- Yikes, because that is the license for a lot of photos as far as I can tell. But nevermind that, I added CC BY 4.0 without deleting the (whateveritis about kremlin.ru) in the hopes of solving this problem. --SVTCobra 02:33, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

I'm trying to add copyright information to File:Harvard Lampoon Basement Floorplan.jpg, but I'm not sure how. It's in the public domain, as it's a public record from the state of Massachusetts. Is there someplace I should add that in? Eddy23 (talk) 21:53, 24 August 2019 (UTC)

Am I getting someting wrong? Polegeek (talk) 11:18, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
- @PoleGeek: Commons has different rules than Wikipedia. Wikipedia uses fair use, but Commons does not. Do you have permission from the organization in question to post the image under a free license? If not, then you can upload to French Wikipedia as fair use. Let me know if you need help with that, and I can get a French-speaking administrator. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:28, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
I only credit Eliasdabbas because it's his tool, free to use, that generates those graphs. When the man himself uploads, he chooses the CC-4 license. It must have no problems. In any case, I asked Elias for input. Igordebraga (talk) 04:38, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Igordebraga: if Eliasdabbas created the HTML with the output, then he owns the creativity rights. If Elias confirms the copyright, it will be fine; that's all I'm asking for. We cannot choose a license on his behalf; that's not how things work. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:35, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi Magog, is there a way to configure Ogrebot to create a gallery just by reading the EXIF of the file? For example, a file that was uploaded from facebook will have FB........ in the EXIF. 大诺史 (Talk/留言/토론/Discussion) 05:53, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Excuse me, why you did not read the template with OTRS? Please do not cancel superficially the files, we had authorization to upload that. Please restore, thank you. --Sailko (talk) 05:50, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Sailko: I did, but it looks like I might have been confused. The page states that the files are authorized "only for 2019 WLM Italia", which I interpreted to mean they aren't allowed to be used elsewhere. Can you clarify why that wording is present? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:43, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi! it means upload can be done only during WLM 2019, but the use is free. This is a new template we made after we received many authorizations ofr works of art not in PD, so if you suggest we may make the text clearer. Thank you --Sailko (talk) 17:12, 6 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Sailko: You might want to rewrite it to say "this only applies to works of art uploaded during WLM 2019." This clarifies that anyone can use the images. Also, what is the license with which the museum released the work of art? I presume that Ardengo Soffici's estate transferred them all the rights? Also, why did you list yourself as the copyright holder? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:22, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help! The licence is the one that comes normally from Wiki Loves monuments (cc-by-sa). As regards the copyright holder, I am just the author of the photograph, and this is a problem of the Upload wizard we have noticed since many years... My name should come up in a "photographer" field, not as the "author", we all know, but nobody seems interested in fixing this problem we have reported so many times, and I cannot do it manually for my 200k files. Thank you. --Sailko (talk) 06:15, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Sailko: I'm sorry, but that doesn't fly. You have 440,000 edits and you know how to use wikitext. The license in question requires the actual copyright holder to be named, not for you to ignore it because you couldn't and still can't be arsed to do things the right way. Please fix your uploads; as it stands they're a copyright violation. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:25, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
- I cannot change manually each file I upload and I am not so familiar with alternativa upload template, but I have many users fixing files here and there. You deleted a picture that was already confirmed by FlickrevieweR 2 and was confirmed licensed under the term of cc-zero. Check this link which has clearly mentioned that Peter Golding has renamed his account and holds the authority to license this picture. He released the picture under the right license. I seriously don't understand the reason for deleting a picture that is confirmed. It was deleted first with the obvious reasons. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Peter_Golding%27s_Designer_Jeans_Showcard_1970.jpg (ScorpionShark (talk) 08:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC))

- @ScorpionShark: Files which were previously deleted in a discussion are automatically subject to speedy deletion per COM:CSD#G4. If you'd like to appeal, I recommend you speak with User:Ronhjones, and if you don't find that fruitful, you can appeal at COM:UNDEL. We take appeals seriously so if see a convincing argument, an administrator will undelete your file. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:28, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

Александр Мотин
I understand you, that block is too strong way in Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems#Александр Мотин, but what is about other ways from Commons sysop's arsenal - warning for example. He has proceed with personal attacks, and he as indef-blocked user in Ru-Wiki will have not heard any warning from ru-wiki sysop. Alex Spade (talk) 18:48, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Alex Spade: OK that's a bit worse. If it happens again let me know and I'll provide a polite warning. Honestly I'd suggest you let it go unless the attacks go over the top, or directs them at other users. Personal attack warnings usually induce the backfire effect and just make the situation worse. Illustrazione di Aleksandr Benois per "Il cavaliere di bronzo".jpg
Hi! I modified the license for the file as requested, following the instructions of another similar file. I had pud PD-Russia instead of PD-RusEmpire.--Carmela Angela (talk) 22:23, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Carmela Angela: your post didn't add the template, and even if it did, you didn't add a date, so how do I know if it was published before the Revolution? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:15, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
