September 2021: it's Wiki Loves Monuments time again!

[edit]

Hi

You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in Ireland. We'd be delighted if you would enter again this year, and continue to build on the image archive of Ireland's built heritage.

You can find more details at the Wiki Loves Monuments Ireland website. If you have images taken in other countries, you can check the international options. Once again, this year's contest runs until 30 September 2021.

Thanks again for your help and enthusiasm! Smirkybec (talk) 04:40, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I did? Can't remember when or in what capacity I contributed. I was in Dublin once, but I don't recall uploading any photos from that trip. --SVTCobra 13:13, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Karpov in actie (tegen Smyslov), Bestanddeelnr 930-5424.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Koen Suyk

[edit]

Hi, thanks for all your work on categorising the Anefo photographers, and for clearing out Koen Suyk. Well done! Andy Dingley (talk) 11:41, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Andy. There's still a bit of work to do in the Koen Suyk archives, but I'm getting there. Cheers, SVTCobra 13:24, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Or maybe you already took care of it. Cheers, SVTCobra 13:38, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Just looking, you seem to be using HotCat. That's good, but it only does one at a time. Have you considered using VisualFileChange?

It tends to need a lot of regexes, but it will also do large bulk operations very quickly.

I split the Koen Suyk Tweede Kamer ones by year today using these:

Selecting by year:

\s*\|\s*[Dd]ate\s*=\s*(\{\{[Tt]aken on\|)?\s*1963

Changing the categories:

/\[\[Category\:Photographs by (\S+[^\|\]]+) in (.+)(\|.*)?\]\]\n?/
[[Category:Photographs by $1 in $2 (1963)$3]]

Give it a go and play around a bit. Happy to help with any of it. Andy Dingley (talk) 20:31, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I am aware there are bulk tools such as Cat-a-lot and, now VisualFileChange. Thanks. I have resisted the temptation so far as I want to give each file a good look. I do a lot of research into the location and names of the subjects. Not all is revealed in Anefo's descriptions, which in most cases I run through Google translate, but I have begun to recognize faces and backgrounds. Cheers, SVTCobra 21:17, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A lot of them are like this: Category:Photographs by Eric Koch at Verolme Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (1962)
It's far from obvious to connect Napoleon on a horse to a shipyard! (I still don't get the point. 1812? OK, but why ships?) But once you've spotted one of these, there's a sequence in the naming which allows you get the lot in one go. Also some respond to things as simple as [Aa]ankomst (\S+\s+)*Schiphol on the filenames for the many arrival photos. Andy Dingley (talk) 22:27, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
1812 is right around when Holland became part of the French Empire and the invasion of Russia was launched. Not sure if there was a naval component tied to this shipyard. I do see your point and may tinker with VisualFileChange. Thanks, SVTCobra 22:43, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Andy Dingley: Relying too much on scripts and VisualFileChange can lead to compounding mistakes like this which I don't think should have happened. Obviously, the error originated with the upload (I have notified them) but it ought not have been compounded by adding the {{Anefo}} template when it was wrong. Maybe you can tweak VFC so that it kicks out an error message? (I really don't know how VFC works). Anyway, I like to look at the images and see what else is missing from them. You do good work. Cheers, --SVTCobra 20:26, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and just so you can see an example without any changes by me there is this which I left intact. Cheers, --SVTCobra 20:32, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's not scripting this that's the problem, it's relying on the metadata here and it's hard to find a way past that. Some of that metadata is quite broken (Hans van Dijk in particular). If the error rate is high enough, then it would be worth running a comparison of the categorization and the embedded Fotograaf field in the raw Dutch content. But we have so many of the things that only scripting them is really viable (I've just had to sort about 3,000 of the Hans van Dijks that were inconsistently formatted, thus hard to process).
Thanks for spotting this, and it's nice to hear that there's one person who doesn't want to ban me for this. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:21, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Stilsteeg te Amsterdam

[edit]

Hallo Vysotsky, zonet afbeeldingen met verwijzing naar de stilsteeg ontdekt. Kan dit iets kan zijn voor een Category:Stilsteeg (Amsterdam)? Thanks. Lotje (talk) 04:39, 23 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Did you intend this message for me or for Vysotsky? SVTCobra 11:03, 23 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Daphne

[edit]

I would think the upload was ok, the block on Daphne was for a totally different situation and this photo seems ok. If you want to nominate it, let me know the link to it and I will comment what I know. Total Disclosure, INC/Daphne is the administrator who suggested I become an administrator also, but that was years before the problem that caused INC/Daphne to be blocked. Copyright on images was not that final issue, I don't think - but I did stay out of it because of the prior connection. I still have a great fondness for INC/Daphne even if they could not contain their issues and ended up blocked. I hope this helps! Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 20:01, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think it is OK. I contacted you because you had previously deleted File:G. Hokken.jpeg and did not know if you were aware that it had been re-uploaded. The source link is no longer valid and I could not find a blanket copyright notice for Europeana.eu. The fact that the license review was carried out by a blocked user was simply the final red flag that caused me reach out to you. Since you know all the history and are a trusted administrator, I trust your judgement and defer to you. I was just making an inquiry due to the "weird" history. I consider the matter closed and I am sorry if that wasn't clear in my last message on your talk page. Cheers, SVTCobra 22:04, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT.
