Regarding Copyright Violations
Hi, I have received a warning recently from you to stop uploading content that is copyrighted, but the posters i used for all the articles i have been editing are very low resolution and they are just to provide a visual to the article and in wikipedia many movie posters and few personalities posters are represented in the same way. I would love to know what was the mistake with mine. I loved the way wikipedia is useful to all the people so i want to edit and make few pages that are known to me, and i find it very difficult with these warnings. I apologize if my tone sounds a little harsh, i am used to it like this. I would love to hear from you.
Thank You — Preceding unsigned comment added by Trulypradeep (talk • contribs) 11:14, September 23, 2015 (UTC)
- @Trulypradeep: the legal term for what you are describing is "fair use." Wikipedia does allow fair use. Wikimedia Commons does not allow fair use. You will need to upload the images to Wikipedia. Let me know if you need help uploading them to Wikipedia, as the process there can be daunting for new users. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:08, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Correction of License
Hi Magog, Have I completed the license correctly? for [File:Photo of John F.Kennedy in New York City, two weeks before the election in November 1960.jpg] --Koheli (talk) 15:54, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Koheli: Did you do due diligence to ensure that the photograph wasn't taken by a third party and included from there? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:45, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Magog the Ogre Yes, it is even visible on the actual photo the credit to George Vlasto (photographer)(deceased)--Koheli (talk) 16:37, 26 September 2015 (UTC)
Hi! I see you've blocked this user for copyright violations. Two things: I don't know how things are done round here, but it looks to me as if most or all of his/her uploads are unambiguous copyright violations, from the sources given, and perhaps should be speedy-deleted as such. Secondly, I've had zero success communicating with this editor, and suspect this may be because of poor understanding of English; do you have someone here who could try communicating in Portuguese? It would be good if permission could be obtained for some of those images; this is probably a well-informed or expert editor, a shame if he/she were lost simply because of a language problem. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:23, 26 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Justlettersandnumbers: not really. Users who come onto the project and promptly break our rules and ignore all messages are a dime a dozen. Competence is required to work on this project, and this user ignored a bunch of messages in his native language on his talk page. And that's the polite assumption; the impolite one is that this user knows precisely what he is doing and was pretending not to understand while hoping the problem would go away.
- I appreciate your assumption of good faith, but I guess I've been at this too long, and I know you can't fix stupid. It's unlikely that any messages in the user's native language will help him be a positive contributor. But be my guest if you'd like to find someone. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:37, 26 September 2015 (UTC)

Fancy QR Codes author
Hi there. I have found these cool-looking QR Codes (this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:OgreBot/Uploads_by_new_users/2014_January_20_12:00#General_Info_.285_edits.29 and this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles&user=General_Info&ilshowall=1). I'm especialy interested in this one: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:QR_design_beachclub.jpg . Any chances, you can help me tracking the source / original author of this work or let me know, how should I attribute this image (when using it outside Commons), if Commons' author page is blank? Thanks you! Trejder (talk) 09:11, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Trejder: technically, you should be able to just follow the license the uploader provided. But I am skeptical that s/he is in fact the author. I've nominated four of the five images for deletion. I would definitely not use those outside Commons if I were in your shoes. As for attribution, it's usually best to just use whatever the uploader initially specified. In this case, s/he simply gave his/her username and a link to his/her page on Commons. I would follow that format with a link back to the original image for licensing details. If it is in print, a statement along the lines of "Image by User 'General Info' at Wikimedia Commons, CC-BY-SA-3.0".
- Standard disclaimer: This should by no means be construed as legal advice, as I am not a lawyer, except for maybe of the armchair variety. I am just telling you what I would do if I were in your situation and you are at your own risk if you're dumb enough to follow it. Please don't sue me. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:41, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Trejder: I just realized I failed to answer half of your question. The images come from a few sources; it's unclear to me if the user was uploading work s/he was contracted for or is just an amateur. I found some other amateur links here. You might consider getting in touch with one of them and asking for them to do something for you. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:46, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

CMA CGM Logo
The French shipping company CMA CGM has changed its logo some time ago. I have managed to update the logo in the English version of the page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CMA_CGM with the official logo (suppplied by CMA CGM communication department) I have the original EPS version.
However when I try to edit the French page https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compagnie_maritime_d%27affr%C3%A8tement_-_Compagnie_g%C3%A9n%C3%A9rale_maritime it refers to a file which I cannot update and is also used on other pages (German page)
Can you update this file so that the change is taken to all language pages that use it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tim baker (talk • contribs) 08:50, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the fix Magog the Ogre. There is still one page that uses the old logo. The Slovenian one https://sl.wikipedia.org/wiki/CMA_CGM and again I don't know how to change this one or how to contact Paul28 https://sl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uporabnik:Paul28 who seems to be the contributor behind this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tim baker (talk • contribs) 12:18, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.
I wanted to follow-up on an message I sent you in September regarding the need for you to sign a confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 31 December 2015) in order to maintain your access from Wikimedia to nonpublic information.
As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are transitioning to the new policy.
An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.
The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that anyone with access to nonpublic information sign the new confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 31 December 2015) to retain their access. You are receiving this message because you have access to nonpublic information and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy. If you do not sign the new confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015, you will lose your access to nonpublic information.
Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign
If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnumwikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 31 December 2015) to retain your access to nonpublic information. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.
Thank you,
Gregory Varnum (User:GVarnum-WMF), Wikimedia Foundation

Shamir
Hola, Magog.
Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:38, 18 October 2015 (UTC)
Response to your question
Allow me to respond to you here as it is a little more private. The regular editors don’t like me because I make rules & enforce them. I don’t want them to hate me even more because I make SPI, 1RR, etc. reports. About a couple of dozen barnstars were handed for work on that article since its creation. Not one of them went to me… which tells you something. Managing the article has been a continual uphill battle… Having to deal with naysayers, POV pushers and incompetent editors… I just want us to respect Wikipedia rules and produce a quality product that is up to Wikipedia standards. But it seems like almost everyone else around me has his own different agenda… I want to spend my time looking for sources and making useful edits… But I often end up wasting my time having to correct other editors mistakes, revert their POV pushing, read their silly messages and drama, write to them trying to convince them of the obvious, and do administrative work relating to SPI, ANI, 1RR, etc… I would appreciate it if you could delete my paragraph after reading it. Tradediatalk 02:13, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Imagenes
Espero respuesta, gracias --Juandax (talk) 19:02, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:03, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Hola, Magog.

- Hi Magog the Ogre
I am very thankful that you helped me yesterday (moving the Main page in Sicilian).
These weeks I have been translating in Sicilian several pages (guidelines, etc.) in order to eliminate red links on the Main page in Sicilian.
I keep translating other pages.
Have a great day!
Best regards

Hi Magog. Could you please have a look at this edit (and 17 similar ones)? --Leyo 11:53, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
- It is adding a source field to the {{Information}} tag, which was missing one. The bot cannot tell that someone accidentally left out brackets. For that matter, neither can MediaWiki. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:44, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
- Well, it was there before, but just not recognized by MediaWiki. It is actually quite common that the missing bracket is at that position:

POV pushing/edit warring on certain nationalist topics
Hi there. I was reviewing some of the Golan Heights and Israel/Palestine images and noticed that a lot of these have over the years come under attack by nationalist editors rewriting descriptions and adding/removing categories in line with their POV - in particular a problem user named "Supreme Deliciousness" (you remember from the enwiki AE case a while back?) expunging mentions of "Israel" from all Golan Heights files and also from uploads by user "Gilabrand" (herself a known problem editor) in cahoots with another user, "Nableezy".
In some cases, these changes modified the descriptions imported from the external sources without discussion - is that considered appropriate? Some of the problem category removals were lame in the extreme, like this removal.
Would you and the project object if I want through and restored some of the original descriptions and categories? I intend to give precendence either to the original author's description, or that imported from the external source. AnotherNewAccount (talk) 19:00, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
- @AnotherNewAccount: please make a post to COM:AN/U. If you ping me in your post, I promise I will back you up 100%. I cannot block him because I am too involved in the subject; I did so before and it was a poor judgment call on my part. But please be prepared to use your primary account or providing a really convincing for not doing so, as sockpuppets making such complaints comes across as dishonest and hypocritical. I don't like drama either, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:26, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
- Just thought I'd clarify that there isn't any current issues, just a plan to fix those caused by historic warring; the problem editors have actually not edited here for several months and I don't plan to file any reports. What is the policy on changing imported descriptions? Things would be much easier if there was a presumption in favour of keeping the author's own description unmodified. AnotherNewAccount (talk) 01:17, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- @AnotherNewAccount: There is no policy. But we hate edit wars and we don't want them imported to here for any reason. People who do so get put on the very very naughty list. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs)
- That's okay. I wonder if we could create a template that says something like, "This description was provided by the original author of the work. It may be biased, inaccurate or misleading. However, please do not change it without prior discussion on the talk page."
- I wouldn't use it everywhere, just on files that may attract unwarranted attention from users with an agenda. Perhaps a bot could watch those articles and draw up a regular report of descriptions (and categories) that get changed? AnotherNewAccount (talk) 01:52, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- @AnotherNewAccount: I don't think that will work. Far more harm than good will come of it. See COM:OWN. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:27, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- But what will work is reporting blatant POV pushers to COM:ANU on a case by case basis. That's just not cool. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 11:59, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I've had a good look through, and I think I'll let most of the "Israel" removals slide; he's mostly been through User:Jakednb's uploads, and that user doesn't seem to be too upset about the changes. Also most of the category changes are sound - per the policy to use categories that are as specific as possible. So I'll concentrate on restoring original imported descriptions as appropriate, and reversing the worst category removals - there really aren't too many, actually - maybe thirty in total. AnotherNewAccount (talk) 21:07, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- By the way, I saw that File:Sternbergia clusiana3.JPG had been overwritten by a later upload, which presumably was a mistake. (Sorry, I don't know how to fix it.) AnotherNewAccount (talk) 21:10, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- @AnotherNewAccount: I history split it. It's been around long enough that the new image should probably stay at its current location. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:50, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Here he is at Special:Contributions/118.93.240.114. I'll bet you he's the only IP editor you'd see in a check on 118.93.0.0/16. I used to keep 6 soft /16 blocks going at a time to lock him out of Commons. It worked for the year or so I was a CU. I never saw any other IP editors on his ranges, and never got a complaint, except one from JB27 himself... INeverCry 05:16, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi, Magog the Ogre. How are you? In June 2014, you blocked the user Gabriel Estella (talk · contributions · Statistics) due to "Uploading unfree files after warnings". Today, he sent an email to me asking to be unblocked. I am in favor of a unblock. Gabriel has evolved very well in Portuguese Wikipedia and today he is a "autoreviewer". I think that he will comply with the rules of Commons. So, you can authorize the unblock? Greetings. Érico (msg) 02:03, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Consulta
Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:49, 6 November 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you, Magog, for your kind cooperation. Any suggestion on a specific tag? Should I "explain the situation"? (My English is somewhat rough...). Best regards, --Gabriel Sozzi (talk) 14:52, 6 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Gabriel Sozzi: In the permission field, I would place the following text:
- It is believed that this work is not copyrighted in the United States because it is a wartime work which belonged to a public entity of Germany, and was thus administered by the Office of Alien Property Custodian. See 17 U.S.C. 104A(a)(2) for more details.

Add The Last Door graphics to Wikimeda Commons
Hello Magog, i'm creating an article called The Last Door and i saw on a post from the creators of the videogame (the last door) has released all the assets and graphics from the game to creative commons as Atribution 4.0. I wonder if can upload it here without problem y si tú puedes respaldarme todas las subidas. Saludos.--VictorPines (talk) 21:25, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
- @VictorPines: Yes, you can use it. You should link to that page. Add {{LicenseReview}} to the page and a trusted user will come along and note that the license was at one point present. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:14, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
OgreBot not recognizing license?
I noticed, that after my update of File:Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List.pdf this is now added to User:OgreBot/Notable uploads/2015 November 2#No recognized license or NLD tag found. It seems to me, that OgreBot does not recognize the en:LaTeX Project Public License. This is an accepted free license, and I used an existing template (Template:LaTeX) for license tagging. So from here it looks to me, that either the bot or the template must be adapted, or may there be another mistake on my side? --Speravir (Talk) 22:08, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Speravir: nope, nothing wrong. There are a lot of licenses, and the bot didn't have that one programmed into it. I've fixed it. [4] Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:20, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

Gallery
Dear Magog,
I would be grateful if you could add the following script to your Bot page:
* [[category:Luxembourg]] | [[User:Zinneke/Nei Biller iwwer Lëtzebuerg]] | 130x130 |
Does this take into account the sub-categories? If not, could you maybe add the appropriate code (sorry, I have 'two left hands' in informatics)?
Many thanks in advance!
Best regards, --Zinneke (talk) 11:15, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Zinneke: yes, I can. In the future, please make requests at User talk:OgreBot/gallery and ping me so that I don't miss it. Yes, it does take into account subcategories, all of them, so you should immediately tell me of any subcategories you want excluded. As an example, Category:Georgia has as a subcategory anything remotely related to Stalin (who was born there), including artifacts in museums which sit on streets in Eastern Europe named after him. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:50, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
- Great, many thanks! And apologies for the wrong address. --Zinneke (talk) 23:22, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

Deleted photos
Hi. I recently added some a new photo and some sport logos to commons. It is an old photo and various club logos of Stevnsgade Basketball Club. I have spoken to the club directly, and they gave consent that it could be uploaded to wikipedia. I see, that fx Manchester United and Chelsea have logos and crest, so why mine deleted?. There was also a photo, stevnsgademestre1995.jpg, that I did not take, but again, the club gave consent and it was their property. Did I not fill in the form correctly or what was the problem? Thank you in advance for your attention :) Thomasbasketball (talk) 12:51, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
- @Thomasbasketball: hello. The issue isn't quite cut and dried, but I will try to make it as simple as possible.
- The logos you uploaded didn't satisfy Commons licensing requirements, even though you had permission to upload them here. However, we are prepared for this situation and even have an email already typed up which you can modify for your needs, if you are willing. See Commons:Email templates.
- The clubs have logos uploaded as fair use, which is a peculiarity of common copyright law which we don't recognize on Commons but which is allowed on Wikipedia under limited circumstances. You'll notice that w:File:Manchester United FC crest.svg is on Wikipedia not here, and that it has a tediously long legal justification for its usage.
- Some clubs may have logos on Commons which are free for other reasons, such as being in the public domain due to age or being below the threshold of originality.
- Let me know if you have any questions. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:47, 3 December 2015 (UTC)
