Thanks for uploading File:Andrew_Selkirk.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

Pay attention to copyright
File:Batista_as_WWE_Champion_in_2010.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Unfortunately, the license linked to on that page is CC-BY-NC-SA-3.0, which is not a free license by Commons's standards. Furthermore, I doubt that that license applies to the Forvo logo and just to the content. This logo should be a non-free file on en.wiki, not a file on Commons. Congratulations, Dear Reviewer

Hi Logan, thanks for your application to be a image reviewer. The application has been removed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can review all kind of image licenses on Commons. Please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. Backlogs include Category:Flickr images needing human review, Category:Picasa Web Albums files needing human review, and Category:Panoramio review needed. You can use the following scripts by adding them to your vector.js:

importScript('User:Patstuart/Flickrreview.js'); -- for Flickr reviewing only
importScript('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); for reviewing Panoramio and Picasa images as well.

You can also add {{User reviewer}} or {{User trusted}} to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons! — [ Tanvir | Talk ] 13:31, 25 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Logan!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

I'd already read the policy: COM:MOVE#5. 'Minature' isn't valid in English, or French to the best of my knowledge, and is considered a typographical error. 'No valid reason stated', isn't sufficiently specific. Best, Mephtalk 00:44, 16 June 2011 (UTC).[reply]

COM:RENAME states the following: "As a matter of principle it's best to leave all files with generally valid names at their locations, even if slightly better names may exist." Since this is just a minor typographical error that does not correspond to a proper noun or false historical date (as reason 5 gives as examples), moving this file is unnecessary according to policy. Hope this explains it. Logan Talk Contributions 00:48, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

your tag is better?

Hallo Logan, why is your tag better (File:LAVinaRock.jpg)? ;-) If you really want to add another tag it is okay - but why removing the old? Just curious. I will try to tell the quickdelete script to remove flickrreview request tags so you will not be bothered in future - or I will do it myself. Another solution: do not be faster than the copyvio admins in working on the flickr backlog. ;) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:42, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, about that. ;P My speedy tag was specific for Flickr, since it was automatically added by ZooFari's Flickr review script. Next time, I'll leave the original tag, though. Logan Talk Contributions 03:28, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for marking the flickr images. Just a brief note. If you tag an image with a nsd tag, try to notify the uploader of this fact. (I did this here) If not, they won't know of the problem. Here, the uploader found the right link after receiving the notification. Cheers and please continue flickrmarking images. Commons needs people like you as I don't have the time to mark them all myself. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:10, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree; a basic source is provided for the file, and you used the template claiming that it has no source. I transferred this from the English Wikipedia, and I thought that there was enough sourcing for it to be kept, at the least. I do agree that it needs a better, more specific source, though. Logan Talk Contributions 02:19, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It is not adequate. I can grab any photo I want and claim it's from www.ice.gov. The photographer must be shown to be a US government employee and not someone who simply took a photo of ICE agents. If you disagree with this tag I will do a full nomination for deletion because doing a Google Image Search with this image to try to determine an original web page for it, all the uses state that they pulled the image from Wikipedia. – Adrignola talk 13:58, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, the file is still licensed under a license that is not compatible with the Creative Commons. According to the current description page on Panoramio, the author has has changed the license to {{Cc-by-nd-3.0}}, which, as you can see, does not permit derivative works, and thus it is not accepted on Commons, which requires licenses to allow for derivative works. Rename guidelines

Hi there, I suggested to have File:CemetaryAuckland.JPG renamed because of rule 5 of the rename guidelines ("correct obvious errors in file names"). It should be 'cemetery' and not 'cemetary'. But if that's the only thing that gets mended, the resulting file name "CemeteryAuckland.jpg" would be somewhat presumptuous, as it's of course by no means the only cemetery that there is in Auckland. Hence I've come up with "Symonds Street Cemetery Auckland 01.jpg". If you don't agree with the second part, would you not concur that the first part, at least, is valid? Schwede66 03:12, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Although it is only a minor typo ("cemetary"), I have decided to perform the rename, as it could be considered part of the proper name of the cemetery. Sorry about the confusion. Logan Talk Contributions 15:08, 1 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings!

I saw you left a nice note on the flickr page of an image I recently uploaded here. Since November 2009 I have tried to inform and thank the flickr uploader. Someone (maybe you?) suggested I start explicitly thanking people for using a CC liscense.

I used to leave the note when I uploaded the image. But, now I wait until after the flickrreview.

About eight months ago I thanked a flickr uploader, who went ballistic. One might think he would have understood the CC liscense, as he had personally uploaded four or five dozen images here himself. But apparently my thank you triggered him to check to see if any other commons contributors had uploaded any other images.

One surprising thing is that other contributors had uploaded well over 200 of his images over the years, and I was the very first person to thank him.

So I welcome someone else recognizes the thank you is a good idea. Geo Swan (talk) 02:40, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, I have found the thank you comments on Flickr photos to be very effective; they both make the creators of the photos feel appreciated, and they also allow for, as you said, the verification by them that they actually wanted to license their photos under the Creative Commons licenses. Glad you appreciated it. :) Logan Talk Contributions 02:42, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Bot move checked"

Hi. Re File:Valentines.day.blizzard.mansfield.ohio.jpg -- you edited the file with the remark "This bot move has been checked" [1]. The file was clearly labeled as being in Ohio, but was categorized as being in New Orleans. Note that the transfer bots are by nature stupid, and sometimes generate text or categories that to humans are obviously absurd and inappropriate. That's a reason why we need people to check on them. I fixed this file, changing to more appropriate categories. For future reference, this is the type of bot garbage that one should keep your eye out for, and fixing this is part of the process of "checking". Thanks for your work. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 01:28, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, the spelling "userpage" is also quite common, and your move created double redirects which broke the functioning of some aliases (i.e. Template:Userpage image)... AnonMoos (talk) 07:22, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, used to the double redirect-fixing bots over at enwiki. I performed the move based on the spelling of WP:USER and just to make the template name more legible. Logan Talk Contributions 20:35, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bollywood Hungama

I noticed you have tagged a couple of pictures I have uploaded here on common for deletion, I understand that the links for the sources give a 404 message, just wanted to let you know that it is because when the host site "bollywood Hungama" changed their layout recently, something went wrong with their archives and all old links are dead. Now I understand that pictures uploaded preferably need to be reviewed when uploaded so to avoid such problems. Cheers. --Meryam90 (talk) 23:34, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes; unfortunately, the files were not reviewed soon after uploading, which is due to a general license review backlog. Do you have updated links for these photos so that they can be verified, or did Bollywood Hungama remove them from their site on purpose? Logan Talk Contributions 23:43, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have noticed that they have changed the format of their links, some pictures still exist on the site, but with new links. The problem is there are above 300 pictures in the archive of SRK alone, and I can't go through all of that to find them again. So, I guess I am just gonna let them go and find some new ones to replace them with--Meryam90 (talk) 00:35, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

MediaWiki will support basic XCF-rendering in 1.19

Hello Logan, sorry for bothering you with this but I decided to contact you as an administrator. Can you please take a look at these two files: File:DC-10 of Air New Zealand at Heathrow - 1977.jpg and File:Air New Zealand DC-10-30 ZK-NZP LHR Jul 1977.png. Is this user's behaviour acceptable? I have uploaded a newer version of the image, placed a tag to merge the old one into mine's, and the user that originally uploaded the older version opposed. I uploaded my version to replace their image, and the user refuses that change too. I just don't know how to proceed on cases like this one, so I decided to contact you for help. I guess it is not the first time this user behaves this way, according to their talk page. There has to be a single image depicting the same topic the way I see things. I believe s(he) is not aware of the fact that another user is able to change any of their former contributions. Thanks in advance for your help.--Jetstreamer (talk) 03:30, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tm may not have liked your contrast change, which is why he recommended that you upload the new version with a new file name rather than replacing or uploading a new version over his original version of the photo. There is nothing wrong with having two versions of the same photo on Commons; it happens very often, whether they be coloring differences or cropping. I'd respect his opinion about the contrast change and leave your new version in a separate file. You can then use the version with more contrast wherever you want to use it, and Tm's version can be used as well. Hope that makes sense. Logan Talk Contributions 03:36, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your response.--Jetstreamer (talk) 03:39, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Logan, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons on irc.freenode.net. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators:#wikimedia-commons-admin.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

File replacements with enWP in no-edit mode

Just wondering whether it is worthwhile holding off on further file replacements until enWP is back into edit mode. I am holding off on the replacements on CDL talk page until that time.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:02, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I was thinking the same thing earlier. I think CommonsDelinker just gives up if the database is locked, so it might be a good idea to wait on all replacements for enwiki until the blackout is over. Logan Talk Contributions 00:03, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'd nominated the above files for renaming to SeshadriinBengaluru2010.JPG and NarasimhaninBengaluru2010.jpg resp., as the numbers "182" and "214" don't signify anything meaningful here. It might perhaps be from the way the uploader's instrument stores the images. Does it not warrant for reason #2 mentioned at Commons:FR to be invoked. Please guide. Regards, Lovysinghal (talk) 17:21, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lovysinghal; I believe that you are reading the policy a bit incorrectly. COM:FR reason 2 states that files can be renamed to "change from completely meaningless names into suitable names, according to what the image displays." Note the bolded "meaningless;" this does not apply to extra numbers at the end of a meaningful file name. Such file moves put unnecessary stress on CommonsDelinker and are wholly unnecessary. Please let me know if you have any further questions! Logan Talk Contributions 12:33, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help in resolving this doubt but moving these two particular files won't put much stress on CommonsDelinker IMO as they are not much linked to at this stage. Is it not? Eitherways, I'll keep your point in mind while doing future tagging/edits. Thanks, Lovysinghal (talk) 12:40, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I've seen that you deleted the two photos File:2011-12-13 Ludwig Erhard Mycologist.jpg and File:2011-12-13 Frieder Gröger Mycologist.jpg because you haven't received an OTRS permission. Renaming file Fiat Panda

Image query

Hello. I am almost exclusively an editor at the English Wikipedia, though I do upload and visit here time to time. Recently, a Wikipedia article on which I have been working for quite some time got a new map, which I requested at the Map Workshop. One of the source images for that map was this one. During the featured article candidacy of the article, it was noted that the said image shows a 404 access error for the first listed source (named Indian Railways). Since the image is protected, only administrators can edit it; could you solve this dilemma for me? It would be really helpful in the FAC too. Thanks! Ankitbhatt (talk) 18:48, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have tagged the source as a dead link. I looked in the Internet Archive, and none of the snapshots of the page had all of the images, so an archive link wouldn't help too much. Hope this helps! Logan Talk Contributions 19:02, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! However, is it not possible to remove the source entirely? The presence of a dead link is affecting the FAC process actually, so I'm rather more concerned about this one. Ankitbhatt (talk) 03:22, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, just because a source is a dead link doesn't mean that it wasn't a source for the original image - it's always good to provide attribution. What specific issue is this causing? Logan Talk Contributions 05:12, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As with every FAC, each image has to be perfect - and I mean perfect. That means that none of the images should have incomplete or lacking rationales if non-free, and that free images must have spotless sources and attribution. So if this problem isn't fixed, the FAC can get failed on the basis of the image problem. Ankitbhatt (talk) 06:10, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Are you still there? Ankitbhatt (talk) 12:28, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, sorry, yes. I doubt that anyone at FAC will give you any trouble for that file, since people on en.wiki recognize that a source is still a source, even if it is dead. It is tagged properly. If they give you any issues about it, then please let me know and I will jump in the discussion. Logan Talk Contributions 17:28, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The link provided doesn't include full source information, which makes potentially updating or archiving it more difficult. I wonder whether there is a possible replacement source somewhere? Nikkimaria (talk) 17:49, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Image Vandalism

Hello Logan, Delta Quad referred me here in reference to the "Photo Vandal" who leaves little dirty notes (and sometimes big ones) in the summary section of hundreds of photos a week. Delta said: "It's no big deal" after speaking with you about it. Rather than get into a long debate about it being a big deal or not, let me vent a short concise opinion: "NO ONE belongs in, or should have editing privileges to a Photo file except the "Uploader" (artist or submitter) and Admins needing to clean up an improper upload". A photo file is nobodies business, and should not be Editable by anyone other than the aforementioned. Thank You. Pocketthis (talk) 14:00, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Hi, I noticed you have set up User:MiszaBot to archive your talk page. Unfortunately, the bot has stopped working, and given how its operator is inactive, it is unclear when/if this will fixed. Thanks for uploading File:Tenth Street - Promenade (Metromover station - Miami, Florida).jpg.

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Tenth Street - Promenade (Metromover station - Miami, Florida).jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.
