Commons Picture of the Day

[edit]

Hi King of Hearts,

My name is Jawad Qadir and I'm a communications intern with the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco. We have a feature on the Foundation blog [1] to profile the photographers behind the beautiful photos that become Picture of the Day (POTD) on the Commons home page. You can see some of our past POTD posts here: https://blog.wikimedia.org/c/communications/picture-of-the-day/

Given that your photo is scheduled for 25 January 2013, we'd love to do a short interview with you either by phone, Skype, or email to discuss your work and your POTD. If you're interested, please email me at jqadir@wikimedia.org.

Thanks, Jqadir (WMF) (talk)

Got your reply today. I'll be sending you some questions by email. Thanks!

Jqadir (WMF) (talk)

Hello ! Can give me your opinion of cropping please ? Bourgeois.A (talk) 18:39, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. I take this opportunity to change camera... because the HX7V is too noisy ! Bourgeois.A (talk) 18:49, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
last question : File:Sony NEX-5N with 18-55.jpg This similare pictures have a chance ? Bourgeois.A (talk) 15:25, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly. But the background is a bit distracting; you should really be using a huge piece of white paper. -- King of 01:23, 5 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Please re-review

[edit]

Please re-review Commons:Featured_picture_candidates/File:Thyssen-Krupp-Quartier-Essen-Q1-2013.jpg and support if possible. I think have corrected your main (halo) issue. --Tuxyso (talk) 08:17, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, the issue is still there. Could you upload an unprocessed version so we can see what it originally looked like? -- King of 09:51, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Uploaded unprocessed versions (-2 EV, 0, +2EV): File:Thyssen-Krupp-Quartier-Essen-Q1-2013-01.jpg, File:Thyssen-Krupp-Quartier-Essen-Q1-2013-02.jpg, File:Thyssen-Krupp-Quartier-Essen-Q1-2013-03.jpg. It would be great if you could take a look. Thanks! --Tuxyso (talk) 22:08, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Then the problem is with the HDR. I don't think HDR should be used unless absolutely necessary to capture the entire dynamic range, and part of the reason is the halos that can occur. -- King of 11:16, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please look at this again, it is back to the full resolution version again which is a copyright issue with respect to the sign. I am still of the view that this should not be on commons but left to being uploaded to local wiki's under a claim of fair use. LGA (was LightGreenApple) talk to me 23:32, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Done. The problem with your argument is that then, wikis without a fair-use doctrine would be unable to use a perfectly free image. -- King of 08:54, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

POTD Mar 5 2013

[edit]

Since you moved the proposed image, may be you could make sure that we have some image for Mar 5? I do not particularly care which one, but I am organizing translation of POTD to other languages, and now it might be time to do it. Thanks in advance.--Ymblanter (talk) 12:08, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I guess someone has selected it now. My intention was to wait a few days to see if anyone else had any ideas, and then do it myself if no one bit the bullet. -- King of 09:42, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just saw it, thanks anyway.--Ymblanter (talk) 14:03, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

Don't you think that we need a permission for this file? Best regards, Yann (talk) 05:45, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No. If you look at the dates, it was clearly uploaded to Commons 6 days before it appeared on the blog. -- King of 07:36, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OTRS

[edit]

Hi KoH- Thanks for the support on WP:FPC. Based on the comments made and that I have requested an OTRS ticket to cover works (banknotes) I upload from the Smithsonian, should I wait before nominating another on WP? I'm not sure I necessarily need one, but that is why I am consulting you... Thanks in advance--Godot13 (talk) 17:22, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What does your OTRS ticket consist of? Is it just a statement from you from your regular email, do you have a Smithsonian email address, or does it contain some official document covering each work individually? In the first case, I wouldn't even bother sending the OTRS, because it contributes no new information. In the second case, a single email to verify your status with the Smithsonian is sufficient, no need for more. In the third case, it is probably best to wait for all the permissions clear. Now, I don't really think any of the images would be deleted without OTRS confirmation, but it's just nice to have in case any problems arise. -- King of 19:41, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for responding. I sent OTRS an email from my Smithsonian Institution email account very briefly describing the digitization project and identifying myself as User:Godot13 on both Wikipedia and Wikimedia signed with my name and title (Research Associate). What I would ideally like is a single OTRS ticket that I could attach to each image of an item in the collection indicating that it was produced by me. I know you are part of the OTRS volunteer team, I would be happy to send you a similar email when I return home on Sunday. I don't have the remote access software on my laptop. Thanks--Godot13 (talk) 00:27, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have replied to your OTRS and created Template:Godot13 Smithsonian. Please review it and make sure the information is correct, especially the attribution line and license (you probably need to make some changes, because I'm going off my best guess). -- King of 00:49, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, thank you. My only technical concern is that I am a consultant/volunteer and therefore I don't think I am an "employee" despite having ID, being fingerprinted, etc... What do you think? And thank you so much for the extremely fast assistance with this, it is much appreciated.--Godot13 (talk) 03:44, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
These works are all PD because they are U.S. currency however...--Godot13 (talk) 03:46, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Closing required

[edit]

Hi KoH:

Why nobody is closing those two nominations at COM:FPC? It seems I too learn that art. :) JKadavoor Jee 16:32, 10 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I guess because there's a slight taboo against voters closing nominations that they've voted in. Whatever, they're not even close so I closed them. -- King of 00:50, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. :) JKadavoor Jee 02:07, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A mass license change of WEF flickr images (per my village pump discussion)

[edit]

Hello King of Hearts, You answered my village pump discussion about the license changing issue of WEF images as an expert in OTRS, but my question is still unclear to determine how we treat WEF images existing on Commons and new uploads of the ones. Although I'm not sure whether WEF does not perfectly understand "free" licensing as Multichill said or does intentionally betray us and reusers of their images deny their original permission now, it's certain that we loss a useful image source which has a significant number (over 10,000) of the images that depict the most influential figures in the world. To resolve this problem, I think we need to contact and ask them for an explanation about this major license change and clarification whether they really want to revoke their OTRS permission or not. --Puramyun31 (talk) 15:48, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of map reopened

[edit]

Hi King of Hearts, a map I had traced two years ago and you had defended against deletion is up for deletion again at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Ciudad de la Costa.png. As I said then, all the legal stuff goes way too far above my head and I have no further arguments I could add this time either. I also ignore completely what the "precautionary principle" of Commons is, so if there are no other principles applying here, I would rather let it go. Thanks anyway.
