Useful on Wikidata as well

[edit]

The tool is super cool! One thought: if there are no images at all on Commons, then there is no category either, and it gets harder to find images. Could the button also be adjusted so that it is also shown on Wikidata for taxon items? Ainali (talk) 12:46, 20 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Comments

[edit]

Thanks for initiating this tool! This has the potential to be valuable, but there are several elements that need addressing. I'm basing my comments on one image I have uploaded using the tool and the images already in Category:Uploaded with iNaturalist2Commons

  1. There seems to be no way to assess the provenance and details of the image before initiating the upload screen. All one sees is a grid of photographs, with zero information on taxon (can be inferred when using a species category, but not when using any higher taxonomic rank), where the photo was taken (very important for most organisms), who took, it, file size, etc. The ability to preview (and thus assess) a particular image before continuing I think is essential for quality control and assurance. It would be great if I could click a thumbnail to access the original photo/observation.
  2. In a geo-referenced website like iNaturalist, where most observations have associated geographic coordinates, place names, etc, it's a pity that none of that information is imported with the image(s). Perhaps future updates could add and populate the {{Location}} template as well as append the place name to the file description alongside taxon name (e.g. "Moyle, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom" to this file). Although this might need tweaking to avoid needlessly specific information (and potential privacy violations) like street addresses being displayed.
  3. The metadata of the files apparently does not transfer over. Compare the meta data at the original with the same image imported via iNaturalist2Commons.
  4. I would like to see more documentation on tool usage/background/guidance (what exactly is it querying? All observations or Research-grade only?) and a note of caution: As I and others have mentioned on previous discussions, in the wrong hands this has the potential to pull large amounts of out-of-scope observations that clutter rather than contribute (e.g. blurry, low-quality, but identifiable "Research grade" observations that do not contribute meaningfully to the collection already on Commons, nor will likely ever be used to illustrate the subject in any publication).
  5. With an assisted import tool like this, the {{LicenseReview}} template should be automatically added (and if its possible to get automatic bot review, à la FlickreviewR, all the better to reduce the backlog at License review needed). --Animalparty (talk) 23:17, 23 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Location

[edit]

Hello, I just try the tool, with File:Microhyla achatina 101396.jpg, that's great, however the source page contains geolocation: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?lat=-6.846322722&lng=106.9612652063, it would be great if you can grabbes the coordonates with your tool. Supplied a patch for this see below. In the meanwhile I could add 95% of the gps coordinates of the already imported pictures. The following 417 gps coordinates are missing Maybe we can fix the last part manually. Rudolphous (talk) 09:03, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

More feedback

[edit]

Hi, Ryan,

We (Ambrosia10, Yayamamo, Shahadusadik, Giantflightlessbirds, Jane023, Andrawaag and I) stress-tested this script during the iNaturalist workshop at WikidataCon today. It's very, very useful, and we all agreed we will be using it a lot, and hope the following feedback and suggestions will be useful:

  • ability to use per iNaturalist user (e.g. see & import all our own, or another user's, images)
  • ability to click on each the suggestions given for upload into Commons to double check the details in iNaturalist. [Siobhan explains: I want to check who actually made them research grade as for New Zealand I can work out whether it is an expert who has done this or a random stranger.]
  • it appears that the images uploaded from iNaturalist into Commons can be duplicated. The tool doesn't always take out those that are already uploaded.
  • is it possible to enter the species name into the structured data panel on Commons as and automatically (or optionally) have that entered as a "depicts" property?
  • ditto the structured data caption?
  • please add date categories, like c:Category:Photographs taken on 2019-10-27

Not working for me

[edit]

The message on the import panel I get is "Error: Loading images failed. If you are using a privacy plug-in like Privacy Badger, you may need to adjust your settings." - as far as I can see I have only AdBlockPlus on my Mozilla Firefox 70.0 and I have turned that off. Shyamal L. (talk) 10:15, 28 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to be working fine for me. Could you provide JavaScript console logs? Masum Reza📞 07:51, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Retried today and it seems to work fine! Thanks Shyamal L. (talk) 08:52, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
PS: I think it would be very desirable to get and fill up the location coordinates template. Shyamal L. (talk) 08:56, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

License Review

[edit]

I just uploaded File:Diplodontias miliaris 1199072.jpg, I see that now a {{LicenseReview}} is added when we use iNaturalist2Commons, however, as(if?) the tool is trustable to sort the free images from the others (as only the free images are uploadable with the tool), then the license review should maybe done automatically... Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:22, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Today one of the images I uploaded using this script was nominated for speedy deletion because the license was cc-by-nc (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Andrawaag#File:Humulus_scandens_24905628.jpg). I was under the assumption that the tool is selecting and only uploading compatible licenses. The copyright violation noted by the bot was accurate. I really love this script, so I would really like to continue using it. Any advice on how to prevent this for the future? --Andrawaag (talk) 22:01, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe the license have been changed since the time of the upload here. Christian Ferrer (talk) 03:36, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Some features

[edit]

Hi Kaldari, you made a marvelous script! I managed to include also the gps coordinates - maybe you like it. [1] Rudolphous (talk) 08:10, 24 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

And the following diff performs the upload in a new window - which make it easier to upload pictures from the same species [2]. Rudolphous (talk) 11:45, 24 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Patch is active from now on. Rudolphous (talk) 19:08, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Rudolphous: Thank you for the new features! I've added them to the script. I also improved the GPS feature a bit. On iNaturalist, when a user sets the geoprivacy for an observation to "obscured", it can place the coordinates in a misleading location, even in another country. So I changed it to only use the GPS coordinates when geoprivacy is off. I also did a few other minor tweaks: [3]. Kaldari (talk) 19:46, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Looks great! Rudolphous (talk) 19:58, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Milestones

[edit]

Currently 25K pictures have been uploaded with inaturalist2commons. I see regularly great high quality pictures uploaded and also of species where we didn't have any pictures of before. Nice milestone - up-to-the next one Rudolphous (talk) 22:17, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Currently 50k images uploaded. Rudolphous (talk) 05:33, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Down?

[edit]

Is there a possible reason why the "inaturalist import" button does not show up anymore, at least to me (using Firefox and Chrome)? Lymantria (talk) 08:53, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Solved. Lymantria (talk) 16:42, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Does it takes time to load?

[edit]

If you check Catergory:Abablemma bilineata, a new gallery with one photo, it has the taxon gallery category on, nut it doesn't shows the tool. It this intended or a bug?Leomk0403 (talk) 02:40, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the time this happens if the category or gallery is not connected to iNaturalist via wikidata. Rudolphous (talk) 07:20, 25 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Location category and showing more images

[edit]

I really like the tool. It saves a ton of time. Two improvements would however be

  • It would be great if the tool would also add a category like "iNaturalist uploads needing categorization by location" since there are coordinates, but automatically no location category. Otherwise adding these location categories might be forgotten
  • There is only a limited number of images shown, although sometimes there would be more available which might have better quality or show a different aspect of the animal/etc

Lupe (talk) 22:13, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks that you like the tool. Already 66k pictures now and we are running towards 100k. I use it myself also often. About the first point do you mean Hymenoptera of Peru, etc? I sometimes add those categories and most of the files have those categories. I can soon do another run to close the gap. About the second point you can already do this using the inatquantity parameter, see also [4]. Best regards, Rudolphous (talk) 06:33, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what I mean. It would be a placeholder and reminder. Many images don't have those categories. If a location category wasn't added it is hard to find these images in the masses. About the second: How/where do I set that parameter? Thank you Lupe (talk) 12:35, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The parameter you can add to url of the category, so instead:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Homodotis_megaspilata
Use
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Homodotis_megaspilata?inatquantity=200

Upload fails

[edit]

Hi, for Category:Cratogeomys merriami the tool shows me images, but when I try to upload it fails (4th image and I tried a few others). There is an error message that the file extensions png/jpg are not matching. In the past when I had that error message with other images I could just edit the extension manually and then try uploading again (succesfully). Now it just empties all fields. Lupe (talk) 12:58, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

These emptied fields also occured with a few other uploads recently (without mismatching extensions), but usually when I try again, it works. Lupe (talk) 13:00, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Troubleshooting

[edit]

Hi, I was trying to see if iNaturalist2Commons could work for Category:Eubasilissa but it seems like the button that would usually show up for it wouldn't show up, despite the category being connected to the iNaturalist taxon ID. Is there anything I could do to remedy this, not sure where to start so thought this might be the best venue to ask. Ornithoptera (talk) 03:28, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
