I am attempting to navigate my way safely through US and NZ copyright waters, uploading and editing as I go. I tend to upload photos I've taken of New Zealand wildlife or interesting/notable people and places I've met or visited. I am working with the BHL-Wiki working group to come up with an agreed SDC schema for BHL illustrations and am keen to do the same for natural history specimen image photographs. I've also completed some SumOfAllPaintings work for some New Zealand GLAMs. I'm an avid fan of the iNaturalist2Commons tool. For more on me see my Wikipedia user page.

Currently working on (August 2024)

[edit]

Currently working on Biodiversity Heritage Library images and working on a data model. Also working on New Zealand moth species - creating categories and importing research grade images from iNaturalist, BHL and other openly licensed or public domain publications. I then add them to Wikidata and Wikipedia. Particularly working on this category and this category.

I'm also adding appropriately licensed images of NZ species, particularly from GBIF, Landcare Research Ltd, Auckland Museum & any appropriately licensed iNaturalist images. I'm also improving metadata associated with already uploaded images, particularly Biodiversity Heritage Library images. Also continuing to work with BHL images imported into Wikicommons, adding creator and category pages for artists and combining this with my Wikidata work.

Completed work

[edit]

Organising the collections section of the Category:Te Papa Tongarewa category, cleaning up and adding metadata to the images including using the artwork template for images in the paintings section and connecting the digital surrogates with the Wikidata items for the works. This cleanup and enrichment is the first step in my aim to help improve Te Papa Tongarewa data and images covered in the Sum of All Paintings WikiProject. I am also uploading Te Papa Tongarewa openly licensed specimen images, adding them to the appropriate species Wikidata items and Wikipedia articles and also importing them to the iNaturalist website where appropriate, for use by New Zealand citizen scientists to improve to collection of data on New Zealand species. This work has now been extensively improved by Te Papa staff.

How to bulk edit categories of images - Example Category:Landcare Research.

  • First create category and if needed Wikidata entry for institution.
  • Next go to Help:VisualFileChange.js
  • At present I'm only using the "Just try it before installing".
  • Search for text that is in all images you want to categories. For Landcare Research images I used "landcareresearch.co.nz".
  • Scroll down the list to the end to ensure all images can be selected.
  • Go back up to the top of the page.
  • Then select "append any text" and tick "(De-)select all uploaded" box.
  • Type in category markup ie [[Category:Landcare Research]]
  • Then press "execute" and wait for it to run.
  • To get result of views per page see - GLAMorgan tool.
[edit]

Rawpixel appears to be a company that takes public domain images and makes minor changes to the image and then claims copyright over them. Where I come across these images the appropriate tag is Modifications-ineligible without the :. See this as an example of how to for metadata.
