I wish to volunteer to add high resolution material to the Google Art Project.
1. I need pointers to the specific objectives, guidelines, nomenclature and tactics without having to plough through the way too many links (none specific so far).
2. It is a huge area with a lot of work. How can I undertake specific sources, without repeating other's work?
3. I can submit both source material and also professionally color corrected images. The images will be edited to remove varnish, balance light and contrast etc and standardised to RGB 300dpi resolution jpeg. What color target is preferred?
What level of jpeg is acceptable?
I do not intend any blemish or spot removal, just accurate color and legibility.
I wish to show before and after examples of my work to double check that it conforms with the guidelines, before I undertake the considerable work involved.
4. I would like to use a clean, consistent, user friendly, natural order, word spaced, fact and spell checked, concise nomenclature of: Artist (Surname, First names), Work Title, date:
eg Anthony, Edward and Henry T. & Co. - American Falls and Ice Mounds 1860-1900.jpg
Any objections?
5. Initially I would systematically target the Getty Open Collection but am happy to take on any other sources.
6. I am a bit of a perfectionist, I believe in getting it done right, once, and to the maximum benefit of the maximum number of users.
- Hello Johnbrack! I'm not really sure what you mean totally, but I'm going to do my best to help. The en:w:Google Art Project is run by Google and its partner museums. We have no access to that, we can't add photos to it or anything like that as far as I know. However, we have many photos here that were originally uploaded by Google as part of their Art Project, Category:Google Art Project. This is legal because those images are considered to be in the public domain in many cases. The official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation is that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain", so Google's use of a scanner does not take public domain art out of the public domain.
- If you find public domain art on Google Art Project you'd like to upload to Commons that you can't find via the Commons search tool, feel free.
It is unlikely that two people will decide to upload the same un-uploaded work to Commons at the same time, so don't worry about work duplication. You can also upload art that isn't part of the Google Art Project, of course, as long as it is in the public domain -- in all cases the highest quality JPEG (100%) and highest resolution is always preferred! I don't think we have a preferred color profile, so just try to keep your digital images close to the original. Psiĥedelisto (talk) 10:03, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
