New species of crane fly?

[edit]

Hi Jeevan, I just saw this blog post stating that you helped identify a new species of crane fly. That sounds great — can you give me some pointers to more details? Thanks, -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 00:39, 9 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daniel Mietchen, it is File:Megistocera at Kadavoor.jpg as mentioned in the comment of that blog. I got both male and female from the same location in different years. The antenna of the male is very unique; so Pjotr Oosterbroek quickly identify it as a Megistocera sp. While comparing with specimens of existing species in that genus, he concluded that it is different from Megistocera filipes fuscana which is the existing species in Asia. It also looks different from the American and African species. We need further study on it. He published them at http://ccw.naturalis.nl/detail_images.php?id=18546&image_id=18546&width=740#18546 See file description for more details. (The details are published at http://ccw.naturalis.nl/ too; but accessible only through searching Megistocera at http://ccw.naturalis.nl/search.php and selecting "Megistocera species Jeevan Jose, 2015".) Cheers, Jee 00:49, 9 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks — fascinating! Have you discussed how to proceed? Do you have any further materials (photos, sound, video, samples, local name etc.)? I am interested in such online discoveries (a similar one is here) and would like to help document what is known about this taxon. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 04:46, 9 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It is interesting, Daniel Mietchen. I know Kurt; he is my friend in Flickr and Facebook. I'm a fan of his works too. I too was advised by Pjotr Oosterbroek to collect specimens and hand over to local universities or natural history museums for further studies. I will try though this is not very common here. I had studied related literature available in http://ccw.naturalis.nl/ and other sites (1, 2, 3) to understand their habitat. It is interesting as their larvae occur in aquatic and semi-aquatic freshwater habitats as of odonata.
I definitely interested to study more, especially about their habitat. I will try to record their behavior too in a video. It is very interesting as I mentioned in file description. Thanks; your help is highly appreciated. Jee 15:41, 9 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That all sounds good. Another interest of mine are taxon descriptions that are rich in data (e.g. this one) — would be happy to help with that. Please keep me posted on how you move forward, including on problems you might encounter on the way. Thanks, -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 01:28, 10 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Daniel Mietchen, I wish to proceed that way; but still don't know how to collect a specimen and to preserve it without damages. I've some contacts with entomologists in nearby colleges and Zoological Survey of India. But none of them have good experience on Tipulidae. I'll try my best to find a suitable expert.
One general issue I am facing is we've not enough experts in all Arthropoda orders in India (or may not available to help us). So I usually get helps from outside India for orders like Ascalaphidae, Tipulidae and Asilidae. It is very difficult to make species level identification from photos of such small animals.
Another issue we're facing in Wikimedia is our ID help forums are scattered in several language Wikipedias like English, German and French. It is very difficult for us to participate in other language forums. So I tried to set up a common platform in Commons. But that discussion seems dead after some initial comments. Hope we can do something. Jee 03:07, 10 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that specimen identification is an issue we have yet to address efficiently, but I am not sure what the best approach would be, since such a page can only function well if people with relevant knowledge come in on a regular basis. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 03:29, 11 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Jee, I have always thought that too much discussion kills goodwill, if we want such page, we must create ourself a draft, and subdrafts, in small people groups to avoid endless discussions on the color of the sky...and when we have a satisfying page or page system we move them to Commons namespace. Christian Ferrer (talk) 08:34, 10 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes Daniel Mietchen; I agree with you that we can't do much without the support of subject experts. And those experts may not be much in photography; so their presence here may less compared to Wikipedia(s). Christian, I pinged Arp on his talk to know the status of his efforts. I think he setup a test page long ago. Jee 17:51, 11 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
hm; the idea is not bad, but I think in another way, we have an exemple just under our eyes : the FPC page, if transposed is needed
  • a ID request page
  • a ID request list (transcluded in the page above)
  • for each image needing ID, a subpage (all transcluded in the list above)
  • a ID request archive (to stow the closed identifications)
  • a template to put on the file page for when the request is open "there is currently a discussion regarding the identification of this species, see Commons:ID request/File:thing needed ID.JPG
  • a template to put on the file page for when the request is closed "this species have been identified following this discussion, see Commons:ID request/File:thing needed ID.JPG, if you want this discussion re-open please follow these instructions.....".
Of course we have no BOT and all must be done manually, but if it run for FPC with a lot of candidate, I don't see why the system will no work here, the nomination are kept in the log, we can access it from the FP template on the page...that can easily work for identification in this way IMO...Christian Ferrer (talk) 05:49, 12 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good start! -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 06:00, 12 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
+1. Jee 06:33, 12 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, the draft is available, the request process seems to work well...
On the exemple of ID requested, I put a template on the file page in the purpose the visitors of the file page are aware and can access to the discussion. But the template need to be reworked and to accept parameters...Christian Ferrer (talk) 05:32, 16 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nice attempt. I think the caption ("Arthropod identification") can be more broad to accommodate other organisms too, including plants and fungi. Jee 16:22, 16 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
What's the current state here, Christian — why has that page been deleted? -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 20:53, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello :), an opinion? Christian Ferrer (talk) 06:01, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks; commented there. Jee 07:07, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Licence and review

[edit]

Tamil Wikipedia has received permission for books from an institution under CC0 1.0 and they would like to upload in Commons. eg: File:க.அயோத்திதாஸப் பண்டிதர் சிந்தனைகள்-தொகுதி ஒன்று.pdf Is this license enough or approach OTRS? If it ok, could you review them? --AntanO 17:35, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Ellin Beltz: There about 2000 files to be uploaded. --AntanO 17:53, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AntanO: I'm not an OTRS editor, sorry. But in general books don't go on Commons. Ellin Beltz (talk) 17:55, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I am sure about general books as PDF in Commons, but I see big number of PDF files here. Can PDF can be uploaded here in Commons. Do we have any guidelines? --AntanO 18:04, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes; books in PDF is acceptable in Commons. Earlier, I had license reviewed Konkani Viswakosh. But we can review a license available in public space like http://www.tamilvu.org/. Otherwise this need to be sent to COM:OTRS so that they can verify the license. Pinging Ravidreams too as he seems involved. I just saw a post at VPC too. Jee 01:56, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Equipment Lending and Community Support

[edit]

WMIN is facilitating a camera and lens to support my Wikimedia contributions through its Equipment lending and community support program.

Following are the equipment:

1. Sony Alpha ILCA-77M2 Body Only DSLR Camera (INR Rs.75,325)

2. Tamron A005S 70-300 Lens (INR Rs.28799)

Please endorse this support so it can be formally documented.

Through this support, I intend to do the following:

As you know I had procured (through community support) a Sigma 150mm macro lens, flash and other related accessories for a Sony A33 camera that had been gifted by a fellow Wikimedian. But unfortunately that camera get damaged in an expedition at Thattekad Bird Sanctuary just after documenting a Gomphidia kodaguensis. This made the procured accessories not useful without a camera.

With the help of the new camera, I can reuse all those equipment and continue exploring and documenting the biodiversity of Kerala.

The telephoto lens will help to document the subjects less approachable.

Thanks. -- Jee 13:28, 10 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A humble call for prayers

[edit]

As many of my friends here already know, my wife is suffering from Endometrial stromal sarcoma, metastasis to lungs. She was in treatment since February and now the situation is going bad as fluid started accumulating in lungs. Now she is under palliative care, and the only curative medicine she daily receives is The Eucharist. The doctors well informed both of us about the situation, and we are prepared for our Lord's plan about us, whatever it may be. I'm using this opportunity to say thanks to all of our friends here who had supported us in our happy and difficult moments and humbly requesting to pray for strengthening us to accept our Lord's plan as it is. We know his decision is always perfect and best suited to all. Jee 01:41, 25 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am so very sorry, Jee, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Ellin Beltz (talk) 22:40, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

As my friends Amjith and Netha already mentioned, my wife Ranimol passed away on Monday morning, just after receiving the Holy Communion and swallowing a drop of holy water. As many of you already know, she was wearing the Crown of Suffering since 2003 with a smile without much complaints. Now her heavenly bridegroom decided to replace it with the Crown of Glory. The funeral was on yesterday 11 AM. I was very tired as I was looking after her for the last three months. Now I feel a hollowness in my mind as I've nothing more to do on what I was fully engaged in the last few months. I've no idea what my lord's future plans about me. But I'm sure she is looking at me with her usual smile, and will be careful everything about me as earlier. Need more rest before coming back, if ever. Thanks all for your prayers, well wishes and continued support! Jee 07:49, 18 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Oh dear Jee my friend, Slaunger send me the so sad new by private message right now... Nothing to say, just let you know that, on the other side of our earth, I feel very close with you. Deepest condolences for you and your family, in our common Hope of Resurrection. Stay strong, and have some rest, take care of you, and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need. I see you are back among us, and I'm very happy of that. I hope you feel as good as possible. Still with you, my dear !--Jebulon (talk) 19:53, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Jeb; it is much appreciated. This is indeed a hard time for me. But I'm trying my best to wander around my home, spending much time with my little friends. And it seems they to sympathize with me. Many extremely rare species of insects are visiting and posing for me nowadays. The monsoon just started and I saw many newly emerged Lyriothemis acigastra that I had first observed exactly one year ago.
When it rains, I will be back in home and trying process the images I captured when Rani took rest in March-April. I had shown her those photos through the camera and I still can remember her smile while seeing them. She had not much knowledge about what I was doing in Commons; but was very proud about my achievements. I can feel she lives with me through my little friends, wandering around! Thanks again for your touching words. Jee 02:23, 14 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Cool tool, but how do I use it to add a new cat to all my pics? --Don (talk) 03:08, 27 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Don, run COM:VFC and select "username=your username" in first screen. Select "append any text" in "action". Scroll down and click "more" until all files are loaded. Scroll up and select "select all loaded". Add your category (eg: ) in "please insert the text to be added to each selected file" and fire "execute". Jee 03:17, 27 August 2016 (UTC) Add an "enter key" prior to the category; otherwise category will be added on the same line of last category.[reply]
Thanks, that worked but it only seemed to pickup about 800 of the 1500 pictures I have contributed. Do you mind checking, my contributions are so overwhelming its kind of tough but VFC works great, I am just not yet too familiar with the interface. Cheers! --Don
Don, I had noticed it when a few files pope-up in my watch-list. Glad to know it helped you. If you've more doubts, can ask help on talk or to Rillke who is behind it. Jee 10:40, 27 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Seemed like it had a issue with any more then 900 rather large images but it would take forever to look at every one. Do you know syntax to do a if then with it, I.E. "if Cat:xx does not already exist create it" Thanks for your help, LMK if you have any suggestions. --Don

Don, I think this works. 1. Load VFC. 2. Click "advanced select files". 3. Add the category name (eg: D Ramey Logan) and click apply. Close that screen. 4. You will get all files having that category exist. 5. Click "invert selection". 6. Now use "append any text" function. Jee 12:28, 27 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

Just wanted to let you know that I will be the one dealing with this ticket. So if you need anything, just let me know. Natuur12 (talk) 19:07, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Natuur12. It seems he changed his mind after thinking more about the "commercial use" part. So nothing more we can do now. :( Jee 02:26, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Jee, perhaps he wants to go for a release under a gfdl-license? Natuur12 (talk) 10:40, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Natuur12, he said to me, (after a rethought) he is not happy with the "I acknowledge that by doing so I grant anyone the right to use the work, even in a commercial product or otherwise, and to modify it according to their needs, provided that they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws." clause in the OTRS sample template. So I think this as a lost case. If agreed, it will be a great addition to us. (You may reply to him and negotiate for further possibilities.) Jee 11:04, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Than it's final :(. Natuur12 (talk) 15:58, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jee, Can you identify File:Bat @ Kanjirappally.jpg. Photographed near Kanjirappally. "N+76°47'06.3"E/@9.5117503,76.7829083. Assume it could be Cynopterus brachyotis or Rousettus leschenaultii. Please check OLW also. Advance thanks and regards.--Praveen:talk 15:37, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jkadavoor. I noticed that you have the following code on User:Jkadavoor/Published: . About WikiProject Nature and Conservation in India

[edit]

Hi Jeevan, Glad to have your participation and contributions to the Wikiproject. I noticed that "Images by Jkadavoor" is already a sub-category here: Category:WikiProject_Nature_and_conservation_in_India, but the images you wish to contribute do not yet appear in the gallery itself. If you wish to have all your images or a selection of your images relevant to the Wikiproject to appear on this category page, please see: Making your images appear in the gallery on higher category pages. Would appreciate your comments and inputs into this as well.

We are in the process of similarly adding categories to our contributed images so that they will also appear in the relevant higher category pages. Cheers-- Shankar Raman (talk) 14:59, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Shankar Raman. I think by "gallery" you meant thumbnail views under Category:WikiProject_Nature_and_conservation_in_India. Usually it is not needed as it is against Commons:Categories#Over-categorization. If you want to see all files under the subcategories, just enabling FastCCI in Preferences is enough. Jee 16:11, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Jeevan. That is very helpful. I am still new to editing and the options available here, so was not sure what the best approach would be. I have edited the text to refer to thumbnails rather than gallery, but I wonder if it is still useful to have the thumbnails show up directly rather than via the FactCCI (which is activated in my prefs). As you can see from the very first entry on Commons talk:WikiProject Nature and conservation in India, we were trying to model this on other projects/contributed content. Having the thumbnails show there, an indication of the total number of files in the Wikiproject category, and a search box to find specific files (to be implemented), all in one place, would be useful, I thought.--Shankar Raman (talk) 16:45, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I need some time to think about it. Jee 16:53, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Jee, this goof ball: Ariadacapo has removed my cat from just about every one of my photos. The user made no comments and has no reason for this, but it looks like this person has undone everything I have done over the last few months. Perhaps you and Ellin can help as it is yet another frustration from this site I do not want to deal with. Thank you. --WPPilot (talk) 18:49, 3 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Said vandal goof ball acted in good faith (also did use edit summaries for all to read…) and expects more civility. Feel free to revert this (in spite of COM:OVERCAT). I do not care enough to continue this discussion. Ariadacapo (talk) 19:23, 3 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any way to automate undoing the users edits? I do not have the time for this... --WPPilot (talk) 00:03, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm; Commons:Categories#Over-categorization is not very important for user specific categories. I'll try to restore them (without further discussions) as Ariadacapo seems has no complaints. Jee 02:07, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • The rule is "Two different versions of the same picture cannot both be featured, but only the one with higher level of support, as determined by the closer. Whenever the closer is not sure which version has consensus to be featured, he/she should attempt to contact the voters to clarify their opinions if not clear from the nomination page." Harsh? For me, they are just facts. Please look on what he had offered in his rfa. This seems another example of how easily people spoiled when get power, forgetting early promises. I don't know much about his years of experience in wiki; here listed a few.
Regarding OV rights: Earlier it was supposed to be a simple role. But now the OV team is considered to be a highly trusted group to whom community and m:SuSa can trust though it was not community endorsed. See Commons_talk:Oversighters and Commons_talk:Blocking_policy/Archive_1#Confidential_evidence for related discussions.
The timing of the request also seems very inappropriate as many of us are in a vacation mood. Anyway the community almost decided to appoint him and my single vote is not going to make any difference. Hope he will take my criticism in a positive way and he will be more careful in future. Not that it matters, but the 'date' given by CentralAuth is wrong (by a lot)... my enwiki account was created in April of 2007. Reventtalk 00:14, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This incident and Revent's lack of action even if explicitly asked clarifies I'm 100% right on my evaluation about him. He promised to handle it. Another admin later handled it when I asked again in another place. Jee 13:04, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Your comment at COM:OS

[edit]

I'm not going to ask you to reconsider, and I don't expect you to, but I do want to say that some of what you seem to take as 'preferring to keep my mouth closed' is not that, but instead simply not seeing a discussion until it has moved on, and some is in fact 'that', but not for the reason you seem to think.... I simply think it is often counterproductive to pile on with a 'me too' comment after a point has already been addressed, when it's not a 'vote', and sometimes I'm simply waiting to see how a discussion develops before I weigh in. I don't expect that you see 'all', or even a significant portion, of what I do on Commons, but I have disagreed and criticized, more than once, several of the people that you seem to think that I am biased towards as my 'friends'.

All of that is really irrelevant to the actual role of oversight, however... it's not about having any extra 'power' to win or affect arguments, but instead about being able to redact people's personal information when asked. All of the 'hidden' oversight actions are in fact highly visible to the other oversighters (there are not a large number of logged actions) so any attempt to 'win arguments' via oversight would actually create a sort of 'Streisand Effect' by prompting them to all look at it. Talk page warnings

[edit]

It's well understood that editors 'own' their own talk pages, and can remove comments after they have read them as a matter of keeping them clean. What editors 'cannot' do is simply act as if a warning was never issued to them, because they disagree with it... they can remove it, with some edit summary that acknowledges it, or archive it, but an actual 'revert' is well-understood (and Colin is experienced enough to understand this) as an explicit rejection of the original edit, and Colin's later comments make it clear that I was correct in interpreting his reversion that way. The warning against him stands, unless there is an actual community consensus that I was wrong, regardless of if he reverted it, and regardless of if I noted it at a community venue or not. I noted it at AN/B because he had apparently attempted to erase it's existence, through his revert. Reventtalk 07:52, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

For the record: I do reject Revent's bullying threats. I do not recognise his authority over me, for he (and all admins) have none. Revent needs to learn to how to seek, gain and summarise community consensus, not to lecture and threaten as though he is a god. -- Colin (talk) 09:05, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Revent, it was my early understanding too. But the community had already made me know that it is wrong. I remember very well that Fae re-reverted me when I restored a talk page warning on a user's talk page. In another VP or AN discussion when another user asked whether undoing such warnings without even an edit summary is acceptable. I mentioned this incident and stated it seems OK. Then you commented that a person undoing a warning means he saw that comment. We can't predict his intentions and there is nothing wrong in it. The discussions here also supports this argument. It is difficult for me to find the diff; but I still remember it. Jee 09:31, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Right, I realized after a couple of minutes that I was wrong to re-add it to his talk page, and reverted myself. Per a suggestion, I noted it an AN:B instead... and other admins have stated that it was not 'abusive' of me to do so, despite Colin making the claim repeatedly. Please revert yourself

[edit]

You made a direct allegation against me, and now you have reverted the comment I made concerning your unfounded allegation. Please can you undo the edit you made here. Thank you kindly in advance. Nick (talk) 17:14, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There is no allegation from my side; but your's. If you are away, take time, relax. Read everything that happened in between before making such a rude post about my behavior. How can you make such a remark about me as you said you didn't see ANU? Jee 17:20, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You're making another allegation, this time, you're suggesting that I'm lying. You need to stop this destructive behaviour, Jkadavoor. If you would kindly remove your allegation above and at the FPC talk page, it would be much appreciated. I am intending to go to COM:AN/U and to Stemoc/Comets talk page (for the record, his comment is absolutely unacceptable) to say a few words and in the case of Stemoc, issue a warning. I do not expect to be accused of turning a blind eye to comments, presumably because they're somehow 'anti-Colin' when I've not had the opportunity to first review and now deal with them. I also find it laughable that you're also suggesting there's some form of reading order or that I'm somehow supposed to be psychic and just know that there's been another enormous failure to remain collegial. Nick (talk) 17:36, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Are you joking by asking to "If you would kindly remove your allegation above and at the FPC talk page, it would be much appreciated" when I am blocked? Jee 17:39, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi Christian Ferrer, Nick is indeed welcome to post there. I just moved his opinion about my post as a separate section as it is off-topic to my post. Anyaway I reported it to my Wikipedia Facebook group. No plan to continue util a solution is achieved. Jee 17:34, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You can not choose where he comments, he is free to answer to you in the same section. You don't own the FPC talk page. Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:39, 8 December 2016 (UTC) Furthermore he asked you not to do so and says his will to post there. Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:41, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry Christian Ferrer, you're terribly wrong. Jee 17:45, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Jee, you were edit warring on the page, and doing so over adding a subheading is really not worth getting yourself blocked for. Nick, you say to Jee "now you have reverted the comment I made concerning your unfounded allegation". I can't find the removal of a comment in any diff or the link you give. All I see is Jee adding a subheading, to a long section (twice here and here). I see Nick removing the subheading twice (here and here which is also edit warring. Christian, why is Nick not also warned? Perhaps I miss an edit that is key, but it seems both editors equally guilty of warring over a subheading. Neither have crossed the three-revert-rule which WP has. So don't see how we can't live with both editors being warned to stop reverting each other and no need to escalate to a block yet. -- Colin (talk) 18:07, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't believe it really was edit warring on either part - I only removed the section header the second time because I had an additional comment I intended to make which would have been completely in the wrong section had the section header remained, similarly, Jee made additional comments which made sense at the time to be under the section header he put in - can we just chalk it up to a bit of a misunderstanding on both parts ? I'd be happy if Christian Ferrer was to unblock (I'd happily unblock but given so much of this mess has been caused by people blocking when they're involved, or by people lifting blocks when they shouldn't do, I won't, as much as I would be happy to do so). Nick (talk) 18:46, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • ✓ Done unblocked, if it's not "edit warring", then all as much as you are, you can chose one of this rationale :"disruptive editing", "editing in the purpose to be unpleasant". Nick have the right to comment and edit in the section oh his choice in the FPC talk page, that's all. Jee's edits were disrespectful and discourteous. Christian Ferrer (talk) 18:59, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Nick's edit summary + his message were widely sufficiently explicit to make Jee understand the issue. Jee has deliberately chosen to go further in this direction, that's all. Christian Ferrer (talk) 19:04, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Christian as I said to Nick, I think Nick's opening remarks here contain a misunderstanding as no "comment" was removed. I agree that Jee was rude in reply but the misunderstanding has not helped. However, Nick your comment "just the latest in a long line of simply terrible posts they have made in recent days", falls into the trap we are concerned about: that some admins see only contributions to AN pages and conclude the user is a disruptive part of the community only posting terrible things about terrible things. They ignore that many of our contributions involve discussion at FP/QI/etc which you guys don't see, and much of our work on Commons is with a camera in hand or on Lightroom/Photoshop, which you also don't see. Jee has just returned from a field trip to photograph and catalogue the wildlife in his area. So when you are negative like this, and only make negative comments, it is dispiriting. I also like Jee feel dispirited about several users -- and one admin in particular who picks on me relentlessly, ignores all the other nastiness towards me, and is unable to bring himself to say one nice thing other than patronising crap about being "valued". So please, I don't think your opening words at talk-FPC were fair in general (though might be accurate about specifics -- I'm not commenting on that). -- Colin (talk) 19:26, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A terrible block. I'm not watching all that noticeboard shit anymore, I'm not able and not willing to read all that drama of last few days, as I've neither time nor desire and it just makes me sick; also I don't know what happens on FPC talk and what's the meaning of that all. I looked, however, at the history and failed to see an edit war. There were a couple of reverts, I failed to see in which way the edits were disruption and/or otherwise blockable. But whaever happened — an edit war always takes at least two participants, but in fact only one was blocked. That reminds me of my own block, where my only fault was to have reported the one who harassed me. Not the one who harassed me was blocked in the end, but me, and... surprise... the same admin applaused. Really, it is not me who "creating a hostile environment", because I'm only content contributor + doing some maintenance (on Russian categories, but Russia doesn't interest anyone here except some few colleagues coming from RUwiki and/or Wikivoyage). Yes, corrupt admins are the ones creating hostile environment. Let's hope desysop votes for all of them (fortunately, they are a small minority) will come some day. Maybe only in two or ten or twenty years... but as long as I'm alive and not bullied out of Commons by such people, I will patiently wait for this request, and continue contributing more quality content. --A.Savin 20:58, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Info This was written before the above message, that I did not read and will not read.
Sorry guys, but I did what I thought I had to do to avoid another conflict, do we need that at this time? really? what are you doing guys? I did not judge the substance but the form, Nick said something wrong? I don't know. Is this a valid justification? no it is not. Please stop, you both, Colin and Jee, to jump on administrators, because they wrote a comma in the wrong place. I'm very sad to all those conflicts, do you think the communauty will win something in that? I don't know if Nick is wrong but if he is, you're pretty smart, you both, to give him answers and gentlemen behavior. This is part of my job to watch that. Are my actions a bit borderline in regard to some guideline or policies? well guys maybe, but the life is a bit much more complicated than some policies, and sometimes, proportion wise, a line can be crossed to adapt. It is called taking responsibility and I take this responssability here. I have no regrets nor I will justify myself more, you can open another (yet another) war/conflict in the administrators noticeboard, against me, or against Nick, or against both. You will not need a de-adm with me, you know well me, I am able to withdraw a fp candidate with a ration about 8 support/1 oppose, if I feel the oppose is justified ... then if the community make me understand I'm wrong, I will the same day give back my rights. Please stop to accentuate all the things/discussions in conflicts as soon as you see what you think is an enemy. I'm still wrong to your eyes? maybe i'm not smart enough? or I'm a kind of traitor as I was made to understand by Alexander Savin? or I am not worthy or not able to have the adm tools? Do/think what you have to, I will do the same from my side. I keep a benevolent eye on you both and I will continue to do that, or at least I want to continue, but stop to jump on every user name with a (A) who disagree with you as for Revent. The administrators are not perfect? as you see me too, and you're certainly not better than us. Do not create a difference that does not exist. I will not answer anymore about this block, nor I want to continue this discussion. I will continue to discuss photos or what you want with you both, and I will continue to be friendly if I can, but I don't think I will answer any additional words about this block. Christian Ferrer (talk) 21:04, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Done, I putted back your comment. Jee, I never said you removed Nick text, my concern was the creation of the subsection [4] and recreations of the subsection despite the clear will of Nick (that you made 2 times, [5] and [6]), Finally I'm not sure the rationale for the block is so untrue. I don't agree for to oversight anything at this stade. Or at least if something is oversighted then just the rationale but not the block itself. As the block was justified, I give as evidence that since you were blocked the discussion was able to fully start again. Christian Ferrer (talk) 05:52, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Jee, Nick has no right to comment in the same section as us!?! he is not worthy of it!?! no sorry, more I think to about that you done more I think I'm right, it's exactly that, my job. Regards, Christian Ferrer (talk) 06:16, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. Christian, you seems roll-backed from your previous stand while unblocking per Nick "can we just chalk it up to a bit of a misunderstanding on both parts ? I'd be happy if Christian Ferrer was to unblock." If so just restore the block and ask at COM:AN/B for opinions. Note that I didn't asked anybody to unblock me if the block is justified. I neither wish to make counter arguments to your new comments as it makes me feel your are very unstable on your opinions. I can't predict what new argument you will make later. Jee 06:37, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Let me try one more attempt to explain: Did you read my first reply to you: "Hi Christian Ferrer, Nick is indeed welcome to post there. I just moved his opinion about my post as a separate section as it is off-topic to my post. Anyaway I reported it to my Wikipedia Facebook group. No plan to continue util a solution is achieved. Jee 17:34, 8 December 2016 (UTC)"? Could you check how the page looks now. All parties who expressed a "support" or "oppose" provided their rational with clear bullets or intends as a reviewer can follow. The "comment" which is not a support or oppose and a wall of text questioning my intentions and explanations about IRC and many people's reply now stands between them as a stopping block making new people confused about where to add their opinion. It is quite a standard practice that when unexpected comment appears, the OP creates appropriate sub-heads to allocate space for the. Didyou see this first time? That's why I can support Nick's argument that both me and he were in a confusion on what other is doing. Jee 07:00, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Christian, your block of Jee was for "edit warring after warning". Both Nick and Jee made an identical number of reverts over a section heading, yet you did not warn or block Nick, and Nick's complaint about removal of a comment was his misunderstanding. Even you joined with the reverts. So I say all three of you were warring to a limited degree and nobody to the extent where a block is justified. You claim "after warning" but I see no warning from you or anyone else for "edit warring". Indeed your first action yesterday evening was to revert Jee and your next was to block Jee. Yet another admin using a block to enforce their edits and win it seems. Nick was in the middle of a discussion with Jee, asking him politely to make an edit at FPC which was now impossible because of your block. Jee, with this edit made it clear he wanted to take the dispute with Nick off to his talk page, and so he himself ended the "disruption" at FPC, not you with your bad block. If every petty squabble on Commons resulted in a block, where would we be? How were you working construtively with others yesterday evening? By reverting and blocking over a petty subsection heading? For crying out loud Christian, how lame is that? I support the request to User:Odder to have this block log fixed. This was a bad bad block. Christian, did your new friends LOL when you blocked your old friend? -- Colin (talk) 08:22, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • As far as know Nick is administrator, and when an administrator says something like that [7], you have not to revert 2 times that's all. If I came here saying Jee to stop that, he would have say no "I 'm right and you're very wrong"(see above), and then you would have say I'm involved. My new friends?! pff! I think the only time I ever talk to Nick (online or ofline) was in the noticeboard regarding a block of Tulkavin, and he even did not ever answered. This point of view of "two camps", of "your new friends" confirm I was right that all discussion possible was dead in advence. I will not answer anymore about this topic, even if pinged here or in the noticeboard, and whatever the consequences. I said all I have to say, I did my job as I think it would have been done, and I will continue to do my job in this way. If it is not the good way, it's better that the community ask me to give back my tools, and I will. Regards, Christian Ferrer (talk) 12:14, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Christian, which part of "Apart from roles which require use of the admin tools, administrators have no special editorial authority by virtue of their position, and in discussions and public votes their contributions are treated in the same way as any ordinary editor." are you having problems understanding? Nick made a request to retract an allegation. He used the word "please". He cannot (and did not) demand this with any more authority than I can or Jee can. We discuss disputes, we don't settle them by blocking people. The reverts that occured (and which you and Nick participated in) have nothing to do with that allegation. And stop making criticism of yourself something that requires a de-admin from the community. You misunderstood. You continue to misunderstand. You screwed up. That isn't a sacking offence. But a silly revert war, involving yourself too, about a sub-section header, is no reason whatsoever to block a friend. -- Colin (talk) 12:43, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@User:Colin and Jee: Thanks for pinging me about this. From a quick read of the above discussion, it all looks like a big misunderstanding to me and I'd rather we didn't have to deal with situations like this. As far as Jkadavoor's request for suppression—which Colin above appears to support—is considered, I am afraid there is nothing I can do it. The oversight policy is very, very clear as to the four cases in which the use of suppression is permitted (see the policy page) and misplaced or over-reacted blocks do not meet any of the criteria. The only solution to the fact that this block appears publicly would be for @Christian Ferrer to revision-delete the log entry. I don't think this has ever happened on this project before (it might have, however I don't remember it at this time) and it would require Christian's participation or at least agreement to do so. Oversight, as I said, is not available for this purpose. odder (talk) 22:01, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks Odder for your response. I'm sorry if my request was ambiguous; what I meant was oversight/rev-deletion which ever applicable. My request came from the previous precedent that you had executed. I'm not overly demanding as my online reputation is almost recovered by your comment. I can preserve this discussion in a closed form on top of this page without being archived as an explanation to everybody who simple look on my block-log alone. I'm considering it as an alternate solution too, if my request for rev-deletion is also rejected. Jee 01:16, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks also Odder. I wasn't sure what could or is normally done when a block is universally regarded as bad/unnecessary. Jee, I wouldn't bother drawing any attention to it on your user/talk page, as the block log is quite hard to find and only really know about by wiki nerds. The fact that it only lasted an hour demonstrates it was (a) not serious and (b) quickly undone by the admin with a link to why. I suggest you just archive or delete this as you see fit (you aren't required to archive anything). -- Colin (talk) 12:37, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

POTD

[edit]

Hi Jee, like me you insert your images as POTD. I try to make the description informative and relevant to the day, month, or year. If we don't, we run the risk our images being deselected as being too boring - as well as others saying there are too many wildlife images of insects that are only of marginal interest!! Best wishes, Charles (talk) 11:22, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Charles, COM:POTD is volunteer maintained; no specific team to select or deselect. The fair thing we can do is to keep a gap (7-10) between our nominations that I always maintained. I'll skip that much space if I find another insect by someone else too. (English Wikipedia has an volunteer in charge to manage the POTD there. Here not.) If someone ask me to change a date as they want to use it (due to some specific reasons), I'm always happy to do so. Jee 11:44, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
