- You're welcome. Please see my post to Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Max mosley.jpg. Thanks! — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 17:35, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Sorry
Jeff I assure you there was nothing personal intended in my posting (had I wanted to direct something at you I would have), it was directed at Commons as a whole. Yours happened to be the last of a long line of postings. My view is that we need to try and improve the collaboration of some users (& JL is one) however for me that will be done by example and discussion - fighting fire with fire merely leads to far larger conflagrations in my experience! I certainly intent to devote some time to trying to solve some of our problems here on Commons however I hope to do it in away that has as many folk as possible in agreement and does not attack anyone in the process - it will be good to have as many as possible working in that direction.
In passing I reverted your reversion of JL on the de-admin bit - I knew Bryan had closed it while I was on holiday as that was what we arranged before I left. All the best --Herby talk thyme 08:43, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
- Herby, thanks for getting back to me on this. Like Bryan, I see JL as a disruptive influence. However, I will try to be more cooperative with him. I would have closed the de-admin poll, but I didn't have the templates for it and felt that it would be best closed by an actual admin. Please close it. Thanks! — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 10:05, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
- No problem - the poll was closed on the 13th June when is was scheduled to end - cheers --Herby talk thyme 11:17, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
Kamui99 images
You seem to have uploaded some Kamui Flickr images - uh-oh. See this discussion. [[1]]. These are apparently those again. One is, in fact, this one from Terababes: [2] Are you quite sure these images are OK? --AnonEMouse 17:47, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up. You're absolutely right. Please express your opinion and introduce any additional evidence at Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Briana Banks 2.jpg. I have now salted and flagged those two images at Flickr. Thanks again! — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 21:53, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
[Loud, foul language]
Annoyingly enough, my power company decided to ruin my machine while I was away. I've fix it now and the three files are back. I've also gotten a web server that shouldn't corrupt the files. Also, I can recompress them as .RAR or something else if you prefer. Sorry for all that and thanx for the patience. 68.39.174.238 02:07, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
- Never mind the bit about RARing, I found the compression to be equally poor for both. 68.39.174.238 15:24, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, I had already gotten them. I now have 215 files taking 2.37 GB on my hard drive, ready for upload. The following is a draft of the information for the first file. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 16:00, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

This is one of a series of 215 images from National Geographic's Scenes From Every Land: Third Series.

Permission (Reusing this file) |
{{PD-US}} (template would be expanded in production) |
- Shouldn't there be 216? Anyway, the description is excellent, I'll start work on another book soon. 68.39.174.238 16:41, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, there should. 151 is missing. :( — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 16:45, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
- OK, I've uploaded that one separately. 68.39.174.238 23:53, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
- Got it, thanks! — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 09:56, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
Do you think this template is really necessary? It strikes me as overkill... firstly the "browser problem" with editing pages is mostly removed when people use edit section headings, which on talk pages I imagine they mostly do. Secondly Commons has no guidelines about how a user talk page should be archived. People can simply blank the page with an appropriate edit summary if they want. So I don't think there's a need to tell people to do it a certain way. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 14:46, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
- To my mind, it is a kinder, gentler, AGF version of {{Dont remove warnings}}. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 19:25, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
- Er, but they're like the opposite message... don't remove warnings (which I also don't think is such a great idea, anyway) is about removing warnings... people's talk page is only going to be long if they don't remove warnings...? pfctdayelise (说什么?) 21:37, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
- It can also get long if they upload and discuss really good images (QICs and FPCs), or if they delete lots of files people get very upset about. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 04:05, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
Learning experience
Thanks Jeff G. for your edits of my first uploaded image. Image:Ednah Dow Littlehale Cheney.jpg I learned a lot about watermarks & cropping just by studying your edits. I am blown away with what can be done at the Commons. Daytrivia 01:00, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- You're very welcome! I was new here just a few months ago, and am still new to certain areas. Please be aware of the new Category:Ednah Dow Littlehale Cheney and Image:Ednahcheney.jpg, and let me know if there's anything else I can do to help! — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 04:02, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
I've added a new image to replace one already uploaded but so faint as to be illegible. Licence is PD-Art/PD-US, if you want to upload it. 68.39.174.238 00:04, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
- Which image does this one replace? — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 15:15, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
- w:Image:1832bank1.jpg — I hope my scan has better legible speech-text for the characters. 68.39.174.238 22:15, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
Tks for fixed it. Supertoff 08:05, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Coats of Arms
Hi, Jeff
The problem whth CoA is that while the design (general conception) is indeed PD (this is what is ment by some national laws statements) the graphical rendering is still a work of art, and has its own separate rights (think of it as a free patent, and a derived artistic work). CoA must be sourced, and those "found on the net" that are not "self" or "old" will eventually have to be suppressed, apart from some free sites (the italian one, for instance). Michelet-密是力 05:37, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. I have asked about the source on the German Wikipedia in this edit. Anyone more fluent in German is free to comment there. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 06:50, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
Template:LviatourCredit
(answer) Image deletion warning
I English does not include/understand well. And I does not include/understand what does not go in my image. You want to remove all my work why? --Luc Viatour 09:02, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
- Jeff, good grief!!! What kind of way is this to go about things? Are you trying very hard to antagonise some of our best contributors? Commons:Deletion requests/Images of Fir0002, Commons:Deletion requests/Images of Benjamint444, Commons:Deletion requests/Images of Lviatour! This is not how we go about things! Did you even TRY discussing the issue with any of these users? Oh my God!
- Who do you think this helps?? How are your actions improving Commons? Because I sure don't see how wikilawyering all over the place helps anybody. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 11:24, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
- I'm sorry about angering and alienating good contributors. I was trying to help clean up the template namespace and at the same time reduce the possibility of mass unlogged license changes. I'm also sorry I didn't start with postings to user talk pages. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 11:45, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thankyou for your quick apology.
- May I suggest that policing user templates is not a high priority for Commons. We need helpers who will clean stuff up, but template space is not at the top of that list. Copyrights and image annotation, and even image cleanup, are much higher priority, so if you are at loose ends for things to do I suggest you start with those. cheers --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 12:02, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
- You're welcome. Copyrights I can examine and make progress with, "image annotation" I need more definition on, and image cleanup is not happening at present because I don't have a working copy of the gimp (and it would take ridiculous amounts of expensive RAM). But first I need to clean up this mess I've created, and get current on my watchlist. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 12:15, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
Possible closure
I am inclined to close those two on the basis that the discussion had been unnecessarily overheated. I am not blaming you or anyone for this so as not to fuel the fire. Seeking blame wont help anyone.
I do want to point out Commons talk:Deletion requests#Invalid deletion request. Now, I am not claiming the noms were valid/invalid but am merely pointing out a discussion on preferred conduct for future reference.
What do you think?

- I have withdrawn my nomination of Commons:Deletion requests/Images of Lviatour. I always make every effort to notify the uploaders and other interested parties about my nominations. I didn't get a chance to notify the other interested parties yet in these four cases. And I see I may have an edit conflict. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 12:09, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks! It's not like I was about to run off in a huff without any explanation but a label of "former Wikimedian". :) — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 12:23, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
Re:please link images.
Hello, I try to link the images, but sometimes it does not work. For example,. I did put category "sharks", but it did not show up. The same problems with all great white shark images I uploaded. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Maybe you could help me, please? Thanks.--Mbz1 12:46, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Mbz1
- I currently see "Categories: Sharks" (in part) at the bottom of Image:Great white shark 100.JPG. Such changes sometimes don't happen immediately. You may have to refresh/reload more (F5 or Ctrl+R, depending on your browser), re-request the cached page (Shift+F5 or Ctrl+F5, depending on your browser), or purge a cache at Commons (pretend to edit, then change "edit" to "purge" at the end of the URL) in order for such changes to show up. Changes in categories are reflected in the preview of the image, but you have to scroll all the way down past "Templates used in this preview:" to see the categories, and then you have to save the page before the servers will even think about having your changes affect the actual category or categories (I only see one edit to Image:Great white shark 100.JPG in its history. I hope that helps. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 13:04, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
Nomination of Fir0002 images for deletion
I can't help but wonder why you nominated Fir0002's images for deletion [4] and subsequently edited a policy page to make your nomination appear consistent with that proposed policy? [5] Please consider withdrawing your nomination, at least until others have an opportunity to review and comment on your change to that wording. Walter Siegmund (talk) 16:19, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
- My nomination of Fir0002's images for deletion was consistent with previous discussions here, and did not rely on Commons:User-specific galleries, templates and categories policy, although it could have relied on the 'should' language there, and I resent any implication to the contrary. I invite your continued participation in Commons talk:User-specific galleries, templates and categories policy#subst:ed of a user-specific license template, where I have provided a structure such that 'others have an opportunity to review and comment on your change to that wording.' I have considered withdrawing this nomination, but I have yet to see any indication that Fir0002 is willing to agree that standard license templates actually appear in the wikitext on his image description pages, and vanish (or be substed) from his templates. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 21:39, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
Gramophone company
My apologies for that incorrect move. Still learning. Ingolfson 05:52, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
- Apologies accepted. We are all still learning. :) — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 21:31, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
About your recent deletion requests
Although you are right that user license templates should be substed, requesting all images from a user for deletion, instead of even notifying them of the relevant policy, is not a good idea. Please consider changing this behaviour. -- Bryan (talk to me) 20:56, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, I won't do that again. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 21:30, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Re: Please use an Edit Summary.
You wrote:
When editing a page on Commons there is a small field labeled "Edit Summary" or "Summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:
The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.
Filling in the Edit Summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the Edit Summary field. If you are adding a section, please do not just keep the previous section's name in the Edit Summary field - please fill in your new section's name instead. Thank you. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 02:34, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- I of course use to use edit summaries, but while editing thousends of files I might forget about one or another sometimes. Since my percentage of forgotten edit summaries certainly ranges at far less than one I don't see a serious reason to remind me on that. Are you just trying a new template out? --Ies 14:19, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- Please keep this discussion on your user talk page, where it belongs, so as not to fracture it. Thanks! — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 21:14, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
Please use an Edit Summary
Hi, you put on my talk page the template {{Summary}}. Browsing my contributions I could verify that in the last 100 edits I did not put something in the summary in only 17, most of them beeing marked as minor edits. So, I don't think your warning applies to me and I have to confess that I didn't like to receive it. Regards. Dantadd✉ 15:21, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- Dantadd, I'm sorry I used such an impersonal template, but I had just finished going through your last seven edits to User talk:PatríciaR as listed here, none of which had an original Edit Summary. Flcelloguy's Tool is crashing when trying to review your usage here, but these results from Tool1 show much red, and these results from mathbot's tool show "Edit summary usage for Dantadd: 73% for major edits and 19% for minor edits. Based on the last 150 major and 150 minor edits in the article namespace." — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 20:49, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- Well...on user talk pages I rarely edit the summary. I don't think it's that useful. Anyway, on major edits I'm gonna try to always put something on the summary, but not on minor edits (I'm not going to write a summary that is actually longer than my edition). Dantadd✉ 21:30, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- It's more useful than you think. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 22:45, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
Candidacy
I am a candidate for Administrator. I welcome your opinion and/or comment at Commons:Administrators/Requests and votes/Jeff G. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 11:48, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
- Jeff G., I truly will support a future admin candidacy, and very soon, if you do some self reflection and change your style of interaction with other users. You do some fantastic work here now and I know you would do great work with your tools. But at this time I think you would too controversial an admin. I hope this honest feedback from myself and other people that see the potential that you have to be good admin will encourage you and not discourage you.
