Confusion

At https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Superseded&curid=787205&diff=243937476&oldid=209441601 you say you are fulfilling an edit request I made, but in fact my only involvement was to argue against one of Sarang's requests. He then made this rather bizarre edit removing comments to which I had already responded. - Jmabel ! talk 16:13, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmabel: "Fulfill edit request" script is dumb and takes user name of the last person who edited the talk page instead of name of the person who actually placed the request. And I didn't notice that someone edited the page after Sarang. I noticed it just after I saved the page. --jdx Re: 17:41, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Nikon thumbnails

Hi. Re this edit, Nikon really includes ~0.73 MB of thumbnails? That seems rather wasteful.   — Jeff G. ツ 16:44, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Jeff G.: It looks so. However it's not only Nikon: Special:Contributions/Embedded Data Bot. On the other hand I don't remember a photo with additional embedded data taken with a Canon camera. --jdx Re: 17:08, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please edit

Hi, an error had been dedected in the new version of the template Superseded. I made the correction in the sandbox and tested it, now it should be replaced.
Please copy the content of {{Superseded/sandbox}} to {{Superseded}}. Thank you --sarang사랑 05:47, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done --jdx Re: 06:13, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again, after this correction (working fine!) another not yet detected failure became visible. Sorry, I did not see it earlier! I made the new correction in the sandbox and tested it carefully, now it should be replaced again; it's not so urgent. Thank you --sarang사랑 14:06, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A persistent vandal you blocked

Hi, I'm BlueHypercane761. I'd like to thank you for blocking that vandal who was screwing around on my talk page. Apparently, he's been doing it on and off for months now.

I noticed that he has changed his IPs before each new wave of vandalism. Coupled with the fact that his IPs are dynamic, I would like to suggest a rangeblock if he returns to vandalize again, since these types of vandals are quite persistent, and will usually change their IPs to continue vandalizing. Anyhow, thanks for containing his vandalism. BlueHypercane761 (talk) 05:46, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New version of template

After three month there are some new features in {{Image generation}}; would you please copy the content of the {{sandbox}}.
There are also some small expansions for {{Vector version available}} as mentioned at the talk; would you please replace the two lines. Thank you -- sarang사랑 15:39, 24 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Removing chunk data

Would you consider removing the chunk data from files which have it, rather than just removing the template? Like this: File:Golden State Warriors text wordmark logo.png, File:20170401 162508 copy.jpg. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:15, 30 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Magog the Ogre: I used to remove redundant data, but then I came to an conclusion that it doesn't make much sense unless old versions of these file are deleted. Also I have an impression that the number of files with embedded data (not necessarily containing warez) is growing and stripping redundant data is a kind of tilting at windmills, at least for humans. I was even going to write to Zhuyifei1999 with a proposition of turning off this feature of the bot. --jdx Re: 05:57, 1 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The bot has a high threshold for JEPG before considering that there is something (when the type cannot be determined) suspicious in the file. Bloating up 2MB JPEG to 18MB is ridiculous, and we don't know what the other 16MB is... --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 07:23, 1 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Translation administration

Hi. Can you please pay more attention while administering the translations? You cause way too much pointless work for translators and other translation admins. For example, you don't check the "Do not invalidate translations" option while marking pages for translation. You should do that if the translations don't need to be updated. Half of the translation units for Ukrainian have been falsely marked as outdated because you marked this Revision #239929868 without ticking an appropriate option. Things like Revision #244818130 don't need the translations to be updated.

On Commons:Bad sources you restored the removed translation units and marked the page for translation, creating a single huge translation block, after what I had to do all the translation admin work: Revision #246243708. Idk, is this just a bunch of mistakes, or some kind of negligence? I hope it's the first. Please take some action to prevent such things in your translation admin work. And excuse me if I used some inappropriate tone here – I just hate having to waste my time on doing some pointless work. Some TAs often force me to do that and that makes me angry. You seemed to be an experienced admin, so now I feel kind of disappointed...--Piramidion (talk) 06:26, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Piramidion: First of all, I am sorry for so late answer, but besides my usual tasks on Commons I was also quite busy in real life.
  • Help:Vector graphics tutorial – I am pretty sure that I checked some "don't invalidate" boxes, but apparently I was too conservative, so sorry for the inconvenience.
  • Commons:Bad sources – I deliberately left one huge translation unit because it is one unit from logical point of view. Just like an ordinary paragraph. Translators can see the whole list in translation interface what IMO is convenient. Your approach, i.e. making each item of 2nd and 3rd level lists a translation unit is even worse. IMO you shouldn't have split these lists.
--jdx Re: 10:26, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The whole article is a single unit from logical point of view, this is not a relevant argument. And no, leaving a huge block of text is not convenient at all. I'm saying this as a translator. Please read the documentation (mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation administration, especially look for "lists" in the table), and try to remember this, quote:
"The core idea is that the source text is segmented into smaller units, each of which will be translated individually. When the source text is segmented into units, all changes can be isolated and translators only need to update the translations of units which have had changes in source text. This also enables translators to work on units of manageable size and share the work between multiple translators or continue the translation in later sessions, because they don't need to do all at once."
I made that page relatively easy to translate, while after your edit everyone trying to translate it would leave after seeing that huge translation block. Please don't make such mistakes, don't scare away the translators.----Piramidion (talk) 14:23, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Persistent IP Troll

Hi, it's me, BlueHypercane761. That IP Troll is back, and he's still vandalizing my talk page. He's been trolling me since March 2016, and the latest block seems to have had no effect at all in dissuading from continuing. Can you please impose a 6-month Rangeblock on his current IP range? He's constantly changing his IPs each time he vandalizes, and he's quite persistent, so a rangeblock will be necessary to contain his vandalism. From what I can tell, his latest IP range appears to be 181.49.92.0/22. Thank you. BlueHypercane761 (talk) 09:17, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please undelete page

Hello, Jdx. Please undelete File:DesiredFileName.ext. According to your comment you did a “Mass deletion of pages added by SQDQS”, but this cannot be true for this page: It has very probably been created by Rillke, because it was intended for use with his chunked upload tool, cf. Help:Chunked upload#How to use. While it still works for this matter, it is disturbing to see the deletion message. I do not know, what the vandal did to the page, but it would be nice, if you could you re-establish Rillke’s version, perhaps with some very short info and set full protection against new vandalism (and if necessary a version delete od SQDQS’ version, whatever you think). — Speravir – 20:10, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Speravir: I restored the file in order to you could see it yourself – it was created by SQDQS, a WP0 abuser. --jdx Re: 22:17, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, thanks, and you are obviously right. So, Rillke once intentionally linked to a non existing page. Hence there must have been the usual hint (“This page does not currently exist. You can …” etc.), but I cannot remember, mmmh. (Update: Arrgh, it’s a file page, so it’s “No file by this name exists, but you can upload it. …”, and now I see it I also remember again.) I added now some information about the page purpose. If you think it’s better you could now raise the page protection (registered users, patrolers?). — Speravir – 22:44, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ooh, unfortunately after you’ve set it to full protection I now had to notice, that the file cannot be used anymore it was designed for (at least with language set to German because of a changed upload link in toolbox). I added an internal link to User talk:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js (cf. Special:Diff/247238738), would it help to full protect this page (perhaps useful anyway) like files are fully protected, when they are File of the Day? Embedding seems not to work, becaue it links to upload form, but not the script. Otherwise it it would be better to remove the protection, and put the page on the watch list.— Speravir – 19:22, 9 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Speravir: OK, I lowered protection level. --jdx Re: 19:40, 9 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm writing you as one of the most active Commons users right now. Since a while now, the idea of a dedicated Commons conference has been floating around. But since the last Wikimania concrete steps have been taken to actually make it happen next year. If you're interested in participation or maybe willing to help organize the first ever Commons Conference, I invite you to check out the project page and leave your comments; or just show your support for the idea, by signing up.

Talk Page Vandal Troll is back

Hi, Jdx. The vandal IP that was previously trolling my talk page has returned. It seems like he just won't learn. Can you please re-block the IP range 181.49.92.0/22 for 6-12 months this time? He returned almost immediately after his rangeblock expired. The vandalism was much nastier this time, and it forced my browser to take a couple of minutes just to load the page. I really think that an extended block is needed to drive him off my talk page. And if he continues beyond that, regular long-term blocks may be needed. Thank you. Wiki Loves Africa

In English (lire en français plus bas)

Thank you for your contribution to Wiki Loves Africa 2017

The project is a celebration of the visual diversity of Africa on Wikipedia and its sister projects. There are several fun ways you can help us to make the impact of Wiki Loves Africa stronger:

  • Add more categories to your images so that people will find them to use them in articles ... you can see how to do this here: Quick Guide to Categories on Commons
  • Add your image to a relevant Wikipedia article, i.e. if your image shows a tailor sewing, then add the image to an article on Sewing or Tailors - this allows readers to see different global perspectives of a universal subject. You can see how to do this here: How to insert images into Wikipedia using WikiText
  • Improve the images description to make them easier to understand and reuse.
  • If there is no article that reflects the subject of your images, then start an article about that subject. If you are a new editor, you can see how to do that here: Creating your first article
  • Add more images - you can add more images or media that reflect interesting and encyclopedic subjects in your immediate community.
  • Become involved in (or start) your local Wikimedia community groups - it is a lot of fun, and is important! Find the existing groups here: Wikimedia groups across Africa

We look forward to seeing your contributions!!

Warmest,

Anthere for the Wiki Loves Africa Team

Want to show your participation in Wiki Loves Monuments 2017? Add {{User Wiki Loves Monuments 2017}} to your userpage!

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,400 people (the most of any nation this year) contribute over 8,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate pages on various Wikimedia projects.

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States! These photos are recognized for their photographic quality, artistic merit, and their encyclopedic value as illustrations of unique historical sites. We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret only being able to formally recognize the top 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other national contests, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 winners.

If you would like to view all the photos submitted for the U.S. this year, you may do so here.

Finally, we have also created a feedback form for all U.S. participants to fill out. The survey is optional and anonymous, and only takes a minute or two – we hope to use the feedback to organize better events in the future!

A quick thank you to our national jury, as well as Commons editors who have helped categorize and place photos for the event. And finally, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments and helping to preserve our history through photography - we hope to see you again for future Commons photography events!

The IP Troll is back again

@Jdx: Hi there. The IP troll on my talk page has evaded his rangeblock. Just today, he vandalized my talk page multiple times, with a possible threat. He has also been vandalizing some other pages on Commons recently. Can you please expand the current rangeblock to the IP Ranges 181.49.88.0/21 and 181.57.240.0/20? There is evidence that he managed to evade his current rangeblock to vandalize in June 2017 and today; both ranges effectively cover all of his known IPs within the past 6 months. Can you please rangeblock both ranges for 6 months, with account creation blocked. There is evidence on my talk page and at a couple of other sites where this IP may be involved in sockpuppetry, so it would probably be best if the IP troll were unable to create new accounts during the block. By the way, you can probably unblock the 181.49.92.0/22 range after expanding the block to the to ranges I mentioned above. Thank you. BlueHypercane761 (talk) 01:36, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please also indef block this account: Categoría Inventos de Alemania? This is basically a sockpuppet of this IP troll - in the personal attack, he linked a picture that he himself uploaded on the same day. (The IP troll also has a history of vandalizing pictures in the same category.) Also, the account name is entirely in Spanish, which this IP troll is known to be fluent in. The edits basically amount to a Duck admission of socking. He also used to image to vandalize the Spanish Wikipedia, where he also vandalized a number of articles, effectively being a vandalism-only account. BlueHypercane761 (talk) 02:43, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@BlueHypercane761: I have blocked the first range just like you wanted, but the second one haven't caused (yet) so much harm to justify a rangeblock. Regarding User:Categoría Inventos de Alemania – he hasn't vandalized Commons yet and fake images are allowed here, so he can't be blocked. If you feel this account and 181.57.240.0/20 should be (b)locked due to cross-wiki vandalism, you might report them on m:SRG, although in my opinion its highly doubtful that the stewards will block the range. --jdx Re: 03:51, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I already posted a Global Lock request for the sock account on Metawiki, though they haven't responded to the request yet. I rolled back all of his vandal edits on the Spanish Wikipedia (using my main account, User:LightandDark2000). There is evidence that the IP troll (probably User:Anibal1 editing while logged out) is switching over the the 2nd IP range I mentioned, but if the new range has become his primary range, I'll let you know. BlueHypercane761 (talk) 03:59, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Jdx: Hi there. The named account Categoría Inventos de Alemania finally vandalized Commons (my own talk page!) [1], which pretty much reveals it to be a sock of User:Anibal1/the IP troll. Can you please indef block that account, and also block the possible underlying IP 181.57.247.205, because given this troll/vandal's history, the second his named account is blocked, he will probably resort to socking via is IPs again. The IP was blocked for 3 days, but it expired today, which also means that any autoblocks triggered earlier would have expired by now as well. BlueHypercane761 (talk) 08:21, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Allow pronunciation files through ABF/180

I've been designing a global filter phab:P6086 similar to ABF/180. An improvement I'd like backported is allowing pronounication files, typ. 2-10 second @ 96 kbps. So allow .oga, .webm files <120 kB. —Dispenser (talk) 03:26, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dispenser: I don't have permission to view phab:P6086 nor m:Special:AbuseFilter/144. Could you send me source code of the global rule via email? Or, perhaps, it would be better to turn off rule #180 on Commons? --jdx Re: 07:31, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dispenser and Zhuyifei1999: What change? Do you mean returning to the latest pre-24th October version? And what "some" means? Some autoconfirmed users are able to upload audio files and some aren't? That's strange. BTW. I like your code because it catches sleepers. --jdx Re: 06:43, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Neilsaunders: It seems that all photos on that site are copied from Flickr, so it offers nothing new. --jdx Re: 06:34, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It is correct that the site uses the Flickr API to display a subset of images from the Commons program. The site helps users to search only that content and is popular for that reason. In addition it tasks users to add new metadata which in turn is shared with the participating cultural institutions at Flickr. This functionality is new and not available on Flickr. New Sock of Troll

Hi there. Can you please indef block TroppoRoxxo? He has been CU confirmed on Wikipedia as a sock of ROXELANA22, meaning that this was the vandal that we were dealing with the whole time. This is the newest sockpuppet of the troll, and he's managed to circumvent his latest blocks and create this new account (and he also used it to attack my talk page again, as usual). He also used this account to vandalize the English Wikipedia (where he is frequently active as well), so the Stewards should be notified of this cross-wiki abuse. Vandalism-only account

Hi there. Can you please indef block User:Jeseschristsuperstar!? This is an obvious vandalism-only account, which you can tell by the user's only contribution here on Wikimedia Commons, uploading a junk image to vandalize Kellyanne Conway on the English Wikipedia. (The user has already been blocked on the English Wikipedia, along with a couple of sockpuppets.) On that note, this junk image that they uploaded should be deleted, because it is obviously just pure vandalism, not to mention a personal attack against the article's subject. Thanks. Hi. JDX. I uploaded a better quality picture of File:Riza-i Abbasi Young Portuguese 1634. Detroit IoA.jpg from DIA but it does show the old version when you click on the image for the highest quality! can you help with fixing this problem? Thanks --Gnosis (talk) 21:03, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Gnosis: It's normal – caches need some time to update. Anyway, it is OK now. BTW, I would suggest uploading the file under a new name. It is a different picture – not only it has higher resolution but also colours are different. --jdx Re: 21:18, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I tried uploading it under a new name but the system prevented me from uploading it, saying same file exists under different name! --Gnosis (talk) 21:32, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Gnosis: As far as I remember it's only warning and you can force uploading of your file. Just look for three buttons at the bottom of the upload page. --jdx Re: 21:40, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I tried again, it won't allow it as says there is another version (which is File:Riza-i Abbasi Young Portuguese 1634. Detroit IoA.jpg). Thanks for your help anyway. --Gnosis (talk) 21:45, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Images deleted

Hi JDX, As suggested by you, I have created the Archive... I need your help in a topic where my some of the images were been deleted which I had clicked and I am the copyright owner for the same. For eg.

Can you help me to understand, where could I get justice in this? Kautuk1 (talk) 08:08, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Kautuk1: In my opinion the first two files have been deleted by mistake. I'm not sure about the third – it has low resolution and no Exif data. Anyway, you may request undeletion of these files on Commons:Undeletion requests. --jdx Re: 08:27, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How do you remove embedded data

Hello, I have been noticing that you have been removing redundant data from some of my uploaded images. Thank you for this work, as I'm sure tiff files are a bit large and need to be optimized. However, I would like to know exactly how you do this, so that I can do it myself and make your job easier. I'm also concerned that I would be blacklisted or reported for constantly uploading these kinds of files, as wikipedia has stated that files uploaded with embedded data are candidates for speedy deletion. Is there a program or method of editing my images which could do this, or is it simply an issue with tiff files. I don't want to make you work to edit my images every time I make a small change to one of them. Fanboyphilosopher (talk) 02:36, 13 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Fanboyphilosopher: In case of TIFF files I use two commands: tiffcp -c zip:2:p9 old.tif new.tif and (optionally) exiftool -tagsfromfile old.tif -all:all new.tif. The first command strips redundant data from the source file and recompresses real data using Deflate algorithm instead of commonly used, but weaker LZW. The second command copies Exif data from the old/original file to the new one. The tiffcp utility is part of libtiff and if you running Linux, you probably have it. If you running an other OS, you have to download it (or compile from the source) by yourself. And don't worry about being blacklisted. The Embedded Data Bot is a tool created against pirates who upload illegal software inside specially prepared image files (mostly JPEGs, but also TIFFs, PNGs and others). Such files are automatically deleted. As a side effect the bot also tags suspected files which require human attention. Vast majority of these file are legit files which might be optimized in some way – a common example are photos taken with Samsung's smartphones or Nikon D3000 series cameras. Anyway, don't worry. --jdx Re: 10:22, 13 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Jdx: Thank you for explaining that I have nothing to fear. I'm using windows and I cannot code whatsoever, so the libtiff and tiffcp deal is way out of my league. Sorry, I guess I can't really do anything to compress my images in anything better than the default compression scheme (lzw).Fanboyphilosopher (talk) 03:12, 17 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Fanboyphilosopher: I think you can. Please check settings of the software that you use to edit images – there should be possibility to choose compression method and other parameters for TIFFs, PNGs, JPEGs, etc. I think "save" dialog should offer it. --jdx Re: 08:31, 17 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Jdx: I use Autodesk Sketchbook Express, which has very limited save options and I can't do anything except renaming or choosing the file type when saving. It seems like my best option would simply be to submit my files as png images rather than tiff. I know I'm able to do that. Nevertheless, thank you for all the help. Wandalizm nie są

Hello.
Please, watch your vocabulary. Maybe, people in pl.Wikipedia de facto brand every fart as vandalism (that is likely given how your new-edit patrollers reverted my changes in interwiki no less than twice in þe olde times), but officially the same rules are in effect there as in civilized sites. Clicking on javascript:AjaxQuickDelete.discussCategory(); (possibly even accidentally), entering rubbish in the dialog and pressing Enter vandalism is not. It is a consequence of Wikimedia developers’ zeal for automatization. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 20:46, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Incnis Mrsi: AjaxQuickDelete.discussCategory(); has also Cancel button which is active by default in contrast to Enter which isn't. And neither of these buttons is clicked automatically. Deliberate entering of gibberish as a reason for discussion/deletion is vandalism, for sure it wasn't a good-faith nomination. --jdx Re: 21:29, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism image deletion

Hi there. Can you please delete File:Haseki Hürrem Sultan.jpg? It was an image uploaded by a sock of LTA User:ROXELANA22, and was used only to vandalize an article on the Spanish Wikipedia and my talk page. You can see more on the image's deletion request page. Thanks. BlueHypercane761 (talk) 03:08, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, can you please rangeblock the IP range 181.57.240.0/20 for 6 months, with account creation blocked? This appears to be ROXELANA22's latest IP range, given the fact that he used IPs in this range to vandalize up until December last year, while his primary range was blocked all along. He seems to be using IPs in this range to "re-create" or migrate blocked socks on other Wikimedia sites, to vandalize images and my talk page on Commons. Thanks. BlueHypercane761 (talk) 03:13, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@BlueHypercane761: The file has been deleted. Regarding the range, it has been inactive on Commons for two months so I cannot just block it, especially with account creation disabled and for such a long period. Also blocking this range only on Commons doesn't make much sense because the vandal could easily use it to create accounts on other Wikimedia projects. A steward could block the range globally, but I doubt any of them decides to do it, for the same reason I didn't. Although I don't know its global activity. You might give it a try and report the range on m:SRG. --jdx Re: 04:19, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have a small favor to ask: can you please extend the page protection on my talk page up to 6 months? I know that given the disruptive history of this vandal, he will probably make junk edits to gain autoconfirmed rights before trying again (gaming the system), and he will probably try to vandalize more once the protection period is up, but at least this will force him to work harder. Hopefully, this roadblock will also allow admins and CheckUsers to catch more of his socks before he has the chance to do anything. Thanks. Dienthoaiquangcao

I noticed that you were busy with a large amount of accounts called a variant of "Dienthoaiquangcao", that is Vietnamese for "Mobile phone 📞 advertisement(s)" so it would maybe be wise to try and explain to then the scope of Wikimedia Commons as I think that possibly a small business is behind the accounts and that they don't understand what is and isn't acceptable content. Maybe alzo try to tell them that if they were to try and become constructive uploaders that only own works without images of software are acceptable. I personally really don't see what they try to gain from uploading advertisements of mobile telephones, but I suspect that they don't know how this website works. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (Talk 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 10:03, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Appliepietastesgood3810: Yes, I am pretty sure that your first edit was reverted because you removed too much and didn't give a word of explanation in the summary field. And I reverted your anonymous edits because they just look like vandalism (and again you didn't give any explanation). On the other hand, your edits do not make much sense because your name is still easy accessible through the file history. @Incnis Mrsi: One revert is not an edit war. --jdx Re: 22:01, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Depends on whose edit. Some people bear the “warrior” brand. Consequently, any edit by a warrior is perceived as warring – even if nothing is reverted at all ☺ Incnis Mrsi (talk)

Typos...

Obrazki były, logo - zero; no to znalazłem, ściągnąłem, zrobiłem galerię i... utknąłem tu od kilku tygodni :).
--Jasc PL (talk) 01:39, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ROXELANA22 again

Hello. Can you please indef block RAAM43 and Antiantps43war? The vandal used the first sock to vandalize my talk page again (even though the sock was indeffed on the English Wikipedia 6 months ago), just a few days ago. The second account was created just a few days ago, but it looks like he's lying low right now so that he will a chance to vandalize Commons later on. I have already issued a request at SRG, but I have no idea how long it will take for someone to lock the accounts. BlueHypercane761 (talk) 07:12, 12 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, it looks like someone already locked the second account for cross-wiki vandalism. But RAAM43 is still currently unlocked, and free to vandalize here. BlueHypercane761 (talk) 07:40, 12 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I found that "Category:Jason Lin" was already protected(see: [2]). Thank you very much for your help! Because my user right can't handle this. As far as I know, he always makes the same edit to Category:Jason Lin. I feel troubled by he uses multiple IPs and multiple accounts to make disruptive edits. I hope an administrator can supervise this page "Jason Lin".--Kai3952 (talk) 16:43, 12 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

File replacement

Hi, I noticed you undid my changes on this file I uploaded many years ago. To be honest, I couldn't find any doable way of replacing the old jpg with the new svg, so that any references to the old file, would be redirected to the new one. I also posted it here a couple weeks ago but it seems like nothing happened. If this is not the way, then how should it be done? Thanks! Nachojr99 (talk) 22:58, 9 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Nachojr99: Unfortunately, also I don't know a way how to do it automatically in a proper way. Fortunately, the JPG version is used only in 7 places, so it could be replaced manually without much effort. BTW, please carefully read warnings at the top of User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands if you want to know why CommonsDelinker haven't processed your request. --jdx Re: 00:35, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Photos of guns

Hi Jdx. Thanks for your help at COM:VP/C#Photos of guns. I'm curious to what you think about the images be used in en:List of submachine guns. Almost all of them are Commons images, and many of them appear to have similiar issues to the ones discussed in the aformementioned VP/C thread. I've tagged a few for missing permission, but that's really only a small number of the images being used in the Wikipedia article. Do you think you could take a peek at the licensing of some of these when you have some spare time. If they appear OK, then probably nothing more needs to be done; however, if many of them have questionable licensing, then a multiple file DR may be needed to sort them all out. Multiple uploaders are involved and some files may actually be OK. Thanks in advance. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:15, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Requests

Hi Jdx, again I need your help for a protected template; please copy the content of Image generation/sandbox to Image generation.

Then I need your translation abilities, my Polish knowledge is zero. First you could once again edit InvalidSVG/pl: I prepared it a bit but I do not know the word for "uncheckable". When you look different displays in Polish and in another language, e.g. English, you will see what is in need:

W3C-validity not checked.

A bit more delicate is the translation of Created with/pl. When you check the sample Created with ..., again in one language and in Polish, you can see far below the examples how it should display. In other languages, it is very different depending on whether that language owns gramatical genders - English is very simple, German has three genders, other languages (like fr, es, pt) know two genders but inflects the verb depending on the gender. As told, my pl-knowledge zero, I do not know about genders. If you need more explanation, please give me a ping! Thank you for your previous help -- sarang사랑 17:09, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Sarang: , maybe I could some help in the meantime:
  • The source code of this SVG is valid -> Kod źródłowy tego pliku SVG jest poprawny = OK
  • The source code of this SVG is invalid due to an error -> Kod źródłowy tego pliku SVG jest niepoprawny z powodu błędu = OK
  • The source code of this SVG is uncheckable ->
All 3 versions are properly - longer are only more descriptive
The next 3 elements you mentioned:
  • This W3C-invalid sign was created with Inkscape
- corrected only present translation -> Ta niezgodna z W3C grafika wektorowa została stworzona za pomocą programu Inkscape
- more accurate EN > PL translation -> Ten niezgodny z W3C znak został stworzony za pomocą Inkscape
  • This large W3C-invalid symbol was created with Inkscape
- corrected only present translation -> Ta niezgodna z W3C duża grafika wektorowa została stworzona za pomocą programu Inkscape
- more accurate EN > PL translation -> Ten niezgodny z W3C duży symbol został stworzony za pomocą Inkscape
  • This large W3C-uncheckable signature was created with Inkscape
- corrected only present translation -> Ta nieweryfikowalna z W3C duża grafika wektorowa została stworzona za pomocą programu Inkscape
- more accurate EN > PL translation -> Ta nieweryfikowalna z W3C duża sygnatura została stworzona za pomocą Inkscape
or, in the meaning of signature as someone signed any document -> Ten nieweryfikowalny z W3C duży podpis został stworzony za pomocą Inkscape
Above translations are language properly, but should be checked also with accepted Polish translations scheme here. --Jasc PL (talk) 19:41, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Sarang: The new version of Image generation copied. Regarding InvalidSVG, what does "uncheckable" mean in this context? Does it mean that "for some reason W3C validator was not able to validate given SVG file"? If yes, then even English "The source code of this SVG is uncheckable." in my opinion doesn't sound good, although is acceptable (but I am not a native speaker). So is Polish "Kod źródłowy tego pliku SVG jest nieweryfikowalny" – acceptable but not ideal. I will look at Created with/pl in the evening – there seems to be a problem. @Jasc PL: It's allright. Your suggestions are welcome. --jdx Re: 09:41, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I am hoping that everything is now correct - more or less. If you would give it a check, please look (in Polish language) at Template:Created_with_...#Examples for some example displays. Only if you like you could complete (and correct) my pl-translations in Igen/top: but if you have more essential work to do, it does not matter, for the moment it seems enough "topics". -- sarang사랑 09:38, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I know that is a very rough notice; I display it when the validator refuses to check the code, it happens when the Content type is not properly declared with the <?xml ... ?> statement. Our librsvg does not need this declaration, so it is not a problem - just impossible to sort that file into "valid or "invalid" and I select a third category. While "W3C valid" or ".. invalid" is self-explaining, this is not so with these neither-nor files. Any explanation can be given as a header text in the category, but in the file declaration the text is as short as possible by intention.
Of course, everything in commons and in the world can be done better, or at least in another way; I started with all that stuff, and if somebody wants he or she can change it. Depending the translations, I have no problem with de and en, and I tried it with fr, es and pt but I am looking for help with the other languages, time by time. Now I am glad that pl is done! -- sarang사랑 12:12, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Sarang: There is a bug (missing brackets?) in Polish version of Image generation. Regarding Created with ..., if "signature" means something like this, then "This large W3C-uncheckable signature was created with Inkscape" should be translated as "Ten nieweryfikowalny z W3C duży podpis został stworzony za pomocą Inkscape" – "signature" is "podpis" in this context. The other problem is gender in Polish translation of "This logo was created with". In Polish "logo" has neuter (i.e. third) gender, so Polish translation should be "To logo zostało stworzone za pomocą" instead of "Ten logo został stworzony za pomocą". --jdx Re: 08:51, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I see, it is not so easy - but thanks to your patient help we will finally get it, hopefully. Now the Template:Created_with_...#Examples looks fineto me.
I assumed the neuter forms "nieweryfikowalne", "niezgodne" and "duże": but if that is wrong please tell me better. I also changed the topic for signature from "Ta sygnatura" to "Ten podpis". Now the 3 genders look like

This coat of arms was created with JFreeChart.

This flag was created with JFreeChart.

This logo was created with JFreeChart.

This W3C-invalid logo was created with JFreeChart.
and, with "uncheckability" plus "very large" (may be the W3C box is wrong?)

This oversized W3C-uncheckable logo was created with another tool.

-- sarang사랑 11:55, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Sarang: It looks OK, however the last example has a small issue – in English version adjective "large" is used in both templates while in Polish translation "wielki" is used in the first template and "duży" in the second. "Wielki" is better in this context. Masculine, feminine and neuter forms are accordingly: "wielki", "wielka" and "wielkie". BTW. Created with ... has a problem for "map" – see examples in Polish. --jdx Re: 13:49, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I repaired the last failures you mentioned. There are so many possibilities (3 genders, topic or 3 different defaults, valid or invalid or uncheckable, large or not - I count 72 possible combinations! And too it has to work with the new and with the old layout; if you detect another issue just tell me! Thank you -- sarang사랑 14:35, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Sarang: First of all, many thanks for your interest in proper Polish translations! My writing English is - as you see, but since 20+ years I'm working with English versions of OS'es and most of software (also here I prefer English interface), so that kind of EN > PL translations are easy for me. Of course, "big" is exactly "wielki" in Polish; I don't know if "big" meant in this situation big file size or big resolution of graphics; in practice more often we (PL) use "large" / "duży" rather than "big" / "wielki" - but it's no big deal.
However we must remember that (earlier mentioned) Inkscape is a vector graphics, also SVG, editor; Scribus is typically DTP (desktop publishing) software = another kind/class of software, with ability of export work in SVG format, also. Grüße --Jasc PL (talk) 20:05, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
--Jasc PL (talk) 20:05, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Jasc PL: That's wikipedia that just working together, contributing with our different abilities, we can make things better. To clarify: "big" means large in size, with the effect that the validator gets problems and I switch off the "show source code"-option; this happens when the file size is beyond the limit of 2 to 4 megabyte. If for this semantics the 'duży' is better than 'wielky' I will change it back - I do not think that users read the boxes but, if somebody does, it should be understandable; as good as it is easy to make.
I am currently simplifying the translations of the "created with"-system. The Template:Created with ... serves just for testing purposes, it is not a template for real use. Also for test I abuse the Created with Scribus since I have changed this seldom used template to the new structure; therefore it may appear in strange context when I need it for tests.
The system can only display topics (flags, maps, icons, logos, ...) when a translation is provided in the Template:Igen/top for that topic in that language. I created the skeleton, but I am not fit in languages, and when others want to see things in their language they ought to maintain and to expand that template. If a translation is missing in the current display language, only the standard text without topics is shown, as it was before. Pozdrowienie -- sarang사랑 05:08, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hey @Sarang: jetzt alles klar :). I'v checked mentioned sources; I this situation - with the file size up till 30MB - using of terms "large / wielki" is absolutely reasonable. That files are unreasonable large: at that size we lack the sense of using vector, instead of 300/600 dpi raster graphics. I just tried to open the largest of them in the Inkscape and Scribus I have by hand - result was 2 app crashes with several error messages, near all system memory was exhausted.
Only one small typo I see at the Template:Created_with_...:
  • This icon was created with Scribus by Example.
  • This large map was created with Scribus. -> Ta wielka mapa została stworzona za pomocą Scribus.
The rest is OK. You are doing a great job Sarang. --Jasc PL (talk) 17:39, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
