Category:Demonstrations and protests

Good day. Did you order the move of media in Category:Protest costumes to Category:Costumes at demonstrations and protests, and if so why? Thanks, -- Infrogmation (talk) 16:29, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I listed it for renaming along with other categories, because "Category:Demonstrations" and "Category:Protests" have been merged into "Category:Demonstrations and protests". — Cheers, JackLee talk 18:57, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
OK, I asked because this move changed the meaning of the category. I think close to half the photos in the category are NOT at demonstrations or protests; they are people at parties and parades wearing costumes with some political/satirical content. Had you noticed that? Any suggestions what to do now? Thanks, Infrogmation (talk) 22:50, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
No, I hadn't noticed that because "Category:Protest costumes" was a subcategory of "Category:Protests". I suggest that people wearing costumes with political or satirical content unrelated to demonstrations and protests should be transferred to "Category:Costumes with political themes". — Cheers, JackLee talk 15:15, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Categories of victims, fatalities, deaths

Category discussion warning

Categories of victims, fatalities, deaths has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Re: flickr problem

yes indeed I had trouble, but you can delete yours (File:Signatura d'Emili Teixidor i Viladecàs.jpg) because I already uploaded it by hand (which was in fact easier... Ah. You should have removed the renaming request. I think my version has more complete information and also seems to be slightly larger, so if you don't mind I will tag yours for deletion as a duplicate. If you originally used the Flickr upload tool, please note that it takes some time to work. Therefore, even though it seems to have failed, if you wait a few minutes and reload the file, it should appear. — Cheers, JackLee talk 18:31, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Your recats of UDD Protests

Your recategorisation of the 2010 UDD protests have caused many of these categories to be suddenly orphaned and unfindable because you did not follow up on your edits and forgot to create the main categories. I have reverted most of your edits of these categories as they also did not add any improvement to the present categorisation. - Takeaway (talk) 20:08, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

You have also created parallel categories, and then emptied out the original categories but without following up on your actions by having the original category either deleted or changed in to a redirect. Perhaps you should look up how categorisation actually works in wikimedia before attempting another try. Your past edits just leave too many loose ends. You forget to finish creating categories and you forget deleting or redirecting others. - Takeaway (talk) 03:14, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
I didn't overlook them. I listed them for renaming at "User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands", and they are currently being processed. If you have any queries about when the process will be completed (which should be in about a day), check with the administrator Foroa, who dealt with the renaming requests. I'd appreciate it if you revert your changes, as these are necessary to bring the categories in line with the structure of "Category:Demonstrations and protests". — Cheers, JackLee talk 09:57, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
  • Are you sure that this rename is really correct and precise: "Category:2010 UDD protests" to "Category:2010 Thai political protests"? Have there been no other political protests in 2010 that the UDD can now claim to be the only protester that year in Thailand? Counter protests by the PAD for instance? Or totally unrelated issues of farmers in a rural area protesting against corrupt officials? I know that the English WP article is also called 2010 Thai political protests but I have personally found that very title more journalistic than accurate per the aforementioned reasons.
  • I understand the new categories that contain "Demonstrations and protests" to be indeed more in line with the present Commons naming convention, and, as you have seen, I have let these stand and created redirects to them. But it would be more precise in my opinion, to keep the category system as it is now (meaning the present hybrid of your categorisation and the previous system), because for instance, your suggestion to have "Category:UDD protest Bangkok 2010-05-13" changed into "Category:Protest by the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship in Bangkok (13 May 2010)" creates unwieldy long names. It is not only a long name, it is also not in line with the naming conventions that you want to adhere to because if totally in line, it would have to be "Category:Demonstrations and protest by the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship in Bangkok (13 May 2010)", or even worse, "Category:Demonstrations and protest by the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship, Thailand, in Bangkok (13 May 2010)".
  • I saw that you have also recategorised Category:Demonstrations and protests in Thailand from Category:Events in Thailand into Category:Political events in Thailand today. In my opinion, this is not correct. Category:Demonstrations and protests in Germany for instance, is categorised into Category:Events in Germany due to the fact that there are subcategories that are not political in nature. The same goes for Category:Demonstrations and protests in France. This too is categorised directly into "Events in France", and not into "Political events in France". - Takeaway (talk) 12:23, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
  • I apologise for being gruff in my earliest comments here on your page. All I saw was that your recats had led to many categories having been put in to non-existing, not yet created categories and parallel categories which were half empty or completely empty left to exist. One of the tasks that I have taken upon me here on Wikimedia, is to correct these half-hearted attempts at categorisation. I did not think to look at your rename requests because nothing on those pages or their talkpages alerted me to do so. But as you see, I also do not fully agree with your renaming and recats of the media. How shall we resolve this issue? - Takeaway (talk) 12:40, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Hi, Takeaway:
  • I requested that "Category:2010 UDD protests" be moved to "Category:2010 Thai political protests" to bring it in line with "en:2010 Thai political protests". At the English Wikipedia, "en:2010 UDD protests" is a redirect to "2010 Thai political protests", so I assume that is the most appropriate name for the category.
  • In my view, only categories that contain different demonstrations and protests need to be called "Demonstrations and protests in ...". If a category relates to a specific demonstration or protest, then it can either be called "Demonstration ..." or "Protest ...". Since "Category:UDD protest Bangkok 2010-05-13" or "Category:Protest by the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship in Bangkok (13 May 2010)" is a subcategory of "2010 Thai political protests", it isn't entirely necessary to mention that the protest takes place in Thailand again. Also, I think it is generally a good idea to avoid abbreviations like "UDD" in category names unless they are widely known as they may be familiar to some people but not to others. Finally, it does not seem to be the general practice to use dates in the form "2010-05-13" in category names.
  • I place subcategories in the most relevant category available. In the case of Thailand, since "Category:Political events in Thailand" exists, this is the most relevant category. The reason why I didn't do the same for "Demonstrations and protests in France" and "Demonstrations and protests in Germany" is because I didn't realize that "Category:Political events in France" and "Category:Political events in Germany" existed. If a "Political events ..." category does not exist, I haven't been creating it specifically. Instead, I put the subcategory into "Events in ..." and "Politics of ...". — Cheers, JackLee talk 14:53, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
  • No problem. Yes, you should check "User:CommonsDelinker/commands" and "User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands" to see if categories have been nominated for renaming. Well, if you really don't agree with the proposed names, ask Foroa not to proceed with the renaming on the affected categories (please let me know which ones they are), and we can start a discussion on the talk page of one of those categories and ask users like Foroa and Túrelio who do a lot of category naming and renaming to comment.

I should mention I'm about to leave for an overseas trip in about three hours, so it may take me a bit longer to respond to messages. — Cheers, JackLee talk 14:59, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

No problem. I have contacted Foroa with this message. I will also be travelling abroad this coming Tuesday. I hope to be sufficiently recovered from jetlag around the weekend. I don't think we should rush this issue. I am just as much concerned in having well thought-out categories as you are. As for the use of abbreviations for political parties and organisations: abbreviations are commonly used for subcategories here in Wikipedia. The full names tends to be only used for the main category concerning the party/organisation. See for instance Category:Christlich Demokratische Union Deutschlands, for which the abbreviation "CDU" would hardly be a household name worldwide either. On the system used for dating these categories, I initiated that system to ensure that these categories will appear in correct order in their main category. I am not sure if using, for example, "12 March" and "6 June", will also result in a correctly ordered list. Good travels! - Takeaway (talk) 16:23, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
Well, to make such categories sort properly I add a sorting key like "2012-06-23". I think it's fine to use dates in this format as sorting keys as they aren't "visible" to users when viewing the category name, but using them in the category name itself looks rather unsightly. — Cheers, JackLee talk 17:35, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
I wasn't really thinking about the aesthetics of category names when I made these categories while in a hotel that was under siege every evening while I was there. ;-) - Takeaway (talk) 17:44, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

Copyright violation
Hi

I received an email stating that the image I uploaded violates copyright. This edit has been done by you. This is an image I took when I visited Singapore.

I am curious to know why this is considered a violation. Please see https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:R_Shanmuga_Sundaram&diff=0&oldid=76593764 for details.

Regards/Shan R Shanmuga Sundaram (talk) 11:42, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Shan. You own the copyright in the photographs you took, but the photographs are of artworks and texts which you do not own the copyrights to. Thus, the photographs are "derivative works" of those artworks and texts. In order to have the photographs in the Commons, we would need evidence that the copyright owners of the artworks and texts have agreed to license the copyrights in those artworks under a licence like {{Cc-zero}} or {{Cc-by-3.0}}. Your photographs of statues are fine because three-dimensional artworks which are permanently located in public places can be reproduced without breaching the copyrights in them. This is called "freedom of panorama". Unfortunately, in Singapore, freedom of panorama does not extend to two-dimensional artworks such as drawings and paintings, or to literary works like passages of text. — Cheers, JackLee talk 13:18, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

Cats Inflammation and Neoplasms

Hello Jacklee! Why did you remove the category "Diseases and disorders" from the categories Inflammation and Neoplasms? I think the cat "Symptoms" should better be removed from Inflammation. And the cat "Diseases and disorders by name" fits better for single diseases with a special name then for the big group of neoplasms. What do you think? Greetings from munich!--Hellerhoff (talk) 14:18, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi! As "Category:Diseases and disorders" is the main category, as many categories and files as possible should be moved into subcategories. Inflammation is a symptom of many different diseases and disorders, so it rightly belongs in "Category:Symptoms". As for "Neoplasms", it is such a broad term that I thought the best place for it was under "Category:Diseases and disorders by name". That category contains other subcategories like "Category:Infarction" which are also quite broad. I am happy to reconsider that decision if you feel another subcategory is more appropriate. However, I don't think it should remain in the main category, which should be reserved for high-level subcategories. — Cheers, JackLee talk 16:22, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Hi again! I'm not sure whether inflammation is good categorized just as a syptom, and I thought it should be in the main cat to be found by browsing the tree. And I'm not the only one to think, that Neoplasms belong in the main cat. See here. Maybe the cat Category:Diseases and disorders by name should be better specified to contain only single Diseases and disorders. The way the abuse filter is set up for that page, the only edits filemovers are permitted to make are to add new lines consisting of universal replace requests.
